  • This film is really a gem. Why? because during its runtime of 2:07:19;not for once will you find yourself distracting to think of something else than what is going on screen. It transported me to the INKAAR conference room table along with the other characters. The story is trimmed out of all excesses and is just right. The acting is more or less good. It keeps you on the edge till the last moment thinking "SO WHO'S WHAT?" So please if you can get your hands on this movie, don't delay watching it; because its worth it! I gave it a 7 because, well, i did not particularly like the ending was hoping for something different than that.
  • This is a different kind of movie which boldly deals with a topic of sexual harassment in workplace. It is done well and keeps you involved. If you are a guy and are drifting away from the plot, don't worry. Chitrangda Singh will keep your eyes glued. She is excellent as always and looks excellent. Her dressing sense is great and she looks very classy.

Arjun Rampal's acting is where it's always been, and yet he was not as annoying as I find him otherwise. He is also given some good one-liners in the movie and has done a decent job. Overall the plot is interesting. Oh, did I mention that Chitrangda Singh totally rocks !

No idea why the IMDb rating is low. I and my friends found the movie very good. I recommend you watch it.
  • I wasn't much impressed by last week's Matru Ki...'s complex dialogs and the story. So I hopped into a corner with my partner and tried to perceive Sudhir Mishra's latest.

After watching some classics by him and most recently "Yeh Saali Zindagi," I was expecting hell of a lot of things from him and the sexy cast.

Lo and behold, a wonderful topic of sexual harassment (at the wake of Indian dilemma of what to do with harassers, rapists & offenders) to choose for a movie and not-so-bad story but what lacks and probably why it didn't work out for my partner was she thought the topic was taken to a state of hyperbole. While, I enjoyed the intricacy, but hated the characterization and their levels.

"There is something towards the end that makes you hate it" well that is what she said and, "There is something towards the end that makes you love it" was my verdict.

Music is charming, direction is good, story is good and rest all film- making factors are average. But what I had expected and what should have probably worked for INKAAR is its lead actors furnishing a real deal rather than self-absorbing a competitive and bumptious outlook throughout the movie. While we know office politics need that type of arrogance and pompousness, but... all the way till home - they are just actual spoilers and result of bad thinking.

At the end of the day, Inkaar is for "give-it-a-try-we're-rich" type serious cinemaholics and not for the "let's-watch-a-movie-and-have-fun" crowd.

The thing I adore the most is it's brilliant narration and anti-climax induced metaphor. Absolutely stunning lead players! Deepti Naval is better and dynamic.

    My partner's rating: 7.5/10 | Mine: 9/10

WATCH OUT FOR: the office kinkiness

Can be watched with a typical Indian family? MAYBE!

Language: Strong | Sex: Mild | Nudity: Mild | Foreplay: Very Strong | Smoking: Mild | Alcohol: Strong | Mouth-Kiss: Mild | Drugs: Very Mild | Violence: Mild
  • Okay, the film isn't bad, and it's really quite watchable mainly thanks to its interesting narrative and main cast, who aren't great but are all quite competent in their roles. Sudhir Mishra does a fine job which isn't surprising considering the experienced director he is, but still, the entire thing ultimately doesn't gel. Yes, the film is watchable through and through, the cinematography is good, and the entire track of the dynamics of office politics mixed with office romance is done pretty well, and the viewers are likely to find themselves torn between the two versions presented by the man and the woman in the midst of her complaint of sexual harassment against him. The flashbacks unfold pretty well, but you sort of wish the writers had been a little braver in their decision taking other than try to accommodate commercial pressures.

The two leads are obviously incredibly good looking and the cast in general includes several highly familiar faces which is definitely a bonus. Arjun Rampal is a successful fit for the part of the main lead - he is charismatic and does exceedingly well in registering the character's many facets. Chitrangada Singh is not quite as strong, and even though she is very pretty and attractive, she is sadly never forceful enough even if some moments are better than the others. Obviously Deepti Naval can always be counted on to be never less than excellent, and she is a great addition here. Even to see Rehana Sultan is nice after years even if she has moments on screen. The ending is slightly disappointing, as it ultimately succumbs to the commercial format. Inaar is without a doubt a vert watchable film overall, but let's say more could have been done.
  • I won't say that it is a must watch movie, but it is worth it to watch this movie. This movie has so many good things that i recommend every one to watch it.

The casting was too great, they also acted pretty good also. The best part of the script is that it shows two whole different point of views. In real life this happens all the time. People acts and thinks differently from the same situation.

Overall, the movie is full of suspense. The story turns so quickly that you cannot do anything else except enjoying the movie.Hope that you also like the movie :)

Inkaar (U/A) Hindi -------------- my Rating : ★★★ COMPLETE HARASSMENT OF EGOS

STRENGTHS : - * Performances : award winning rich and classy .... * Direction and Screenplay : i enjoyed each n every frame ...... * Music : few pleasant songs and background music.... * Suspense : who is the victim ?

WEAKNESSES : - * First Half : very slow and contains less contents..... * Story : is very simple but taken more mysterious .......

FINAL VERDICT : - * Overall .... the movie is not special but it is a clean one time decent watch ..... and it must have more spicier .....

The movie follows the story of Rahul Verma, the CEO of an ad advertising company, who has to follow the lawsuit of sexual harassment filed by Maya Luthra, his protégé. The two are battling for the top job of the company. A committee is set up by the agency to hear both sides of the story and work through the layers of lies and accusations to find out the truth.
  • The visionary director Sudhir Mishra's filmography can easily be divided into two parts where in the first he gave us some worth watching masterpieces like YEH WOH MANZIL TO NAHIN (1987), MAIN ZINDA HUN (1988), DHARAVI (1992), IS RAAT KI SUBAH NAHIN (1996) and HAZARON KHWAISHEN AISI (2003) which are widely included in the list of cult classics of Hindi Cinema by the lovers of meaningful films. But then in his second innings, the director delivered many half baked kind of projects such as CHAMELI (2003), KHOYA KHOYA CHAND (2007), TERA KYA HOGA JOHNY (2009) and YEH SAALI ZINDAGI (2011) in which "Tera Kya Hoga Johny" somehow also got leaked over the net even before its official release. So keeping in mind the track record of Sudhir Mishra, I had my doubts about INKAAR, despite of seeing some interesting promos released by its marketing team. Yet the excitement to watch both Chitrangda & Arjun Rampal together in the lead roles was strongly there and I also wished to see Sudhir back in form once again like a true fan.

As a pleasant surprise, the film started off on an interesting offbeat note but within the next 40 minutes it was pretty clear that the director repeatedly has made a mediocre product which unsuccessfully tries to maintain a difficult balance between commercial & artistic cinema exactly like his last few attempts, which failed to make an impact on the viewers. Hindi Cinema has already seen few good films on this subject of "Sexual Harassment at the workplace" lead by the successful AITRAAZ (2004) by Abbas Mustan, which was actually an unofficial version of English hit DISCLOSURE (1994). The sensitive issue was also touched by Madhur Bhandarkar in his CORPORATE (2006) and by Basu Chatterjee too in his SHEESHA made in 1986. So the key was not only the potential plot but its innovative execution by the veteran director which could have win over the viewers with its fine blend of love, sex and sarcastic humor.

Unfortunately, Sudhir Mishra fails to portray these three important aspects of the subject in his uneven script or direction impressively. Due to which INKAAR can easily be called a tiring, repetitive and uninteresting venture giving you much less in return of your expectations. No doubt, the film begins well on a different note, straight away coming to the topic, following a new path with a jury judging the complaint filed by Chitrangda. But as it progresses, the whole excitement around the case simply vanishes off because of its weak writing, many silly characters (particularly the office colleagues) and all predictable developments in its storyline. In fact, this was one of those movies which forced me to check the watch repeatedly to see that why they are not declaring the interval?

The film is unable to make any kind of long lasting impact mainly because of the confusion between its 'Harassment' plot and the love story developing quietly among its lead characters. Basically revolving around the ego clashes only, its climax makes you wonder that if there was such a strong undercurrent of love hidden in Chitrangda's heart then for what actually she had filed the complaint against Arjun? Moreover, at times its really hard to believe that its a Sudhir Mishra film when you are shown a melodramatic father teaching his kid in the flashback, a mother whispering a strange suggestion in her daughter's ears, Saurabh Shukla playing a weird singer in a song and a track with lyrics "Maula Tu Maalik Hai, Allah Tu Maalik Hai" running in the background of an intense bed-room scene? So with such an uninspiring writing INKAAR completely fails to take advantage of both Chitrangda and Arjun who indeed perform well in their complex roles, much better than their previous films.

Arjun Rampal gives a fine performance as the victim ahead than Chitrangda who plays the sensuous, ambitious and wicked lady blaming Arjun. She looks gorgeous on the screen in the first hour of the film. But post that the beauty somehow loses its charm may be because of too many close ups opted by the cinematographer. Deepti Naval as the neutral judge is a complete natural but among the supporting cast actors such as Vipin Sharma and Kawaljit Singh remain wasted. Musically it has nothing great to offer and the same can be said about its background score too which is unable to create any excitement.

However ending on an honest note, I would like to mention that if a film is strongly promoted as a project talking about 'Sexual Harassment" then it frankly creates some obvious expectations in the viewer's mind related with sex and exciting verbal arguments between its key characters. But INKAAR neither satisfies the Male Ego with its fiery scenes or advancements nor pacifies the Female Ego with some well written scenes justifying her awkward position. As a result, it simply remains a confused film caught between its two plots of harassment and love which actually serve no specific purpose at all.

Therefore you can easily skip it in the theaters and watch it as it gets released in the home video market.
  • Lets start by saying that a script this gutsy and honest comes very rarely. In Bollywood, where most film-makers are trying to sell love-story scripts to general public, this movie defines love more realistically than any other movie I have seen. The sheer pressure you experience when your ego and ambition comes in between you and your love. And in that pressure, some choices are made which cannot be classified as right or wrong. Because, we, as audience see the two lovers trying to solve the complicated maze and we get to see all the right or wrong choices they make. But, we don't know what would happen if we were to solve it ourselves.

I will admit that writing such script takes lot of guts and that is why Sudhir Mishra deserves a bow. I don't really care what its IMDb rating is but I am listening to Sudhir Mishra and he made a fan out of me today. \m/
  • Flirting. Sexual harassment. Power politics. Consensual sex. The corporate rat race. Love. All ingredients blend seamlessly and a bit confusingly as the lives of two people intersect, both high in terms of hierarchy, both unwilling to back down and both it seems, with motives other than what is apparent. The first half is quite good, builds things up well. The second falls apart with an end that's unexpected as well as disappointing.

Chitrangda, the National Creative Director of an ad agency, has filed a complaint against her boss (?), the CEO, Arjun Rampal. He also happens to be her former mentor (has taught her everything she knows), lover, friend and adviser. The story unravels as the two depose before a panel, headed by Deepti Naval and populated by other agency people like Vipin Sharma, Shivani Tanksale, each of whom have their own point of view, their own loyalty and friendship. Frequent flashbacks trace the past, including incidents brought up as proof or rebuttal, sometimes the same episode shown from different perspectives.

The first half is tight, filled with tension. A scowling Arjun Rampal feels insulted at having to talk to the panel, angry that he is being of accused of something he he denies. "What is the difference between flirting and harassment ?", he thunders once. "Who has benefited from whom ?" he asks, "I've taught her everything she knows !". "Yes, he's taught me everything", replies a feisty Chitrangda, "but does that mean I should spread my legs every time he walks by?". They both come across as honest, earnestly trying to convince the panel the other is at fault.

Other motives creep in the second half. Other people, other vested interests enter the picture. And suddenly, we're not really sure what the two characters are about ? What makes them tick ? What is the true reason behind the case ? How will it solve itself ? But when the end happens, there is a feeling of being let down – its not consistent with either Arjun or Chitrangda's character, nor does it seem logical.

Arjun suits his role, putting his limited facial expressions to good use, coming across every inch as a man with a touch of hubris, one to whom flirting comes naturally and scoring has never been an issue. Chitrangda sizzles as she tries to balance the different aspects of her character – part Alpha Female, part giddy teenager, part vengeful, part seductress and a little bit of a victim of her own success and circumstance. Vipin Sharma, Asheesh Kapur and Viveck Vaswani also stand out in their respective cameos.

Advertising agencies are always seen as being more bohemian, more permissive than other workplaces. Successful women often do have to face the slur of having slept their way up. Love is usually hard to find in modern office spaces, commitment probably harder, especially from men at the top. There are several insights that make sense, issues raised that hit uncomfortably home. But unfortunately, it doesn't tie up or come together perfectly. At the end of the film, I'm not sure what either Arjun or Chitrangda were about anymore. And that's not a nice feeling to leave with, in a drama dominated by these two characters …

PS : My bias for Chitrangda is well documented in my reviews of her earlier films, so not repeating that disclaimer here… More at www.apurvbollywood.blogspot.com
  • After spending your two hours precious time and few bucks, you would get confusion only at the end. Director Sudhir Mishra tried to explore two most common and complex nature of human being, which is love and sex, he preferred to show later by sexual harassment. There are two main tracks , one is love angle and the other sexual harassment. Both tracks collide with each other in the manner that everything got messed eventually. You neither relate with love track nor with harassment one. Director fails to clear his opinion very badly. The premises of film is advertising media, which is very unusual in India but they assumed it most common. They thought that every person is associated with this field, so they can easily understand the fine sarcasm, which is conceived keeping advertisement field and persons in mind. Story, screenplay and dialogues are very poor. Performance wise Arjun Rampal as Rahul, is good. Chitrangda Singh as Maya, is just OK. Vipin Sharma as Mr. Gupta is noticeable, he had very few dialogues but his delivery makes it impact able. Nothing to say about music and lyrics. After all stay away.
  • well,I am pretty sure this film doesn't fall in the idiotic and senseless genre that thankfully salman khan akshay kumar brought in the bollywood.

It's quite an intelligent and entertaining film.it shows stories from both sides and not all a sexist film.it remains absolute neutral till the very end. All the struggles to climb the ladder of success and the pressure of the corporate world is wonderfully depicted here.Plus the right amount of human emotions are shown. It fantastically displays the love story and the Ego clashes between two successful individuals. Not to say,it is meant for urban population but still a very good step in right direction.Hardly any nonsensical dance numbers and all the songs go very well with the story-line.(except one where a guy sings in an award ceremony). Nonetheless,it is definitely a one. time watch.
  • Warning: Spoilers
The ending sucks. The movie starts abrupt but very quickly finds its pace and it was a freaking good drama that would keep you hooked. It was going so good until the writers had to mess it up with toxic romance.
  • Sudhir Mishra is back with yet another sensible adult topic "Sexual Harassment" & it is a rare topic in our Hindi Cinema. Start is really good but later Manoj Tyagi's script confuse viewers. Director is not able to touch the depth of the seriousness of this topic. Even charters are also confusing. Actors are not able to cop-up with the intensity of roles, even Deepti Naval does not look promising but its really nice to see her back on silver screen. Cinematography is good but problem lies in editing specially in climax during intense scene between Arjun & Chidrangada in bathroom. Arjun does well by his effortless acting but not good in emotional scenes.....outstanding performance Arjun Rampal... Chitrangada looks freaky hot and is above par in acting. Deepti Naval doesn't justify her role. Last Words: Story is good...but you can wait for DVD to come...
  • This Sudhir Mishra's directorial is one the underrated movie of 2013. Film follows Corporate politics in which two of our main leads i.e. Arjun Rampal (Rahul) and Chitrangada Singh (Maya) are battling for the top job of the company however the drama turns around when Maya files a sexual harassment case over Rahul to which a committee is formed to work through lies and accusations to find out the truth and decide their fate which is aligned to their corporate future. Both the counter parties tells their side of the story to defend themselves which surprisingly follows the same events and that's the best part of the movie as both the parties tells same story. Now, to find out who wins and who fails to convince, you have to watch the movie. Sudhir Mishra's direction is indulging and captivating followed by the solid performances by its leads. Chemistry between Rampal and Singh having love hate relationship compliments the movie rightly
  • nnk-3999029 April 2020
Started off quiet well both the lead actors Were decent , in the end I felt they could have done a better job .
  • Inkaar nahi Ikraar......!!!! After Yeh Saali Zindagi, Sudhir Mishra has done another excellent job in his direction. Chitrangda Singh at her best including Arjun Rampal! I'm so simply impressed! :) The story is not only about Sexual harassment at work place but the relationships people make to get better position and growth in their careers.

The movie screens the controversial topic how we interpret the difference between flirting and harassment. Till the time it is being enjoyed, it is allowed and we say it 'Fun working environment' but just after fulfilling the requirement, the intentions change and convert their faces to be Sexual Harassment and 'Tharkipana'. O_o

I watched Akshay's starrer Aitraaz (2004) on the same topic, but Inkaar tops the chart and without focusing on Male chauvinism or Female's ambition, it depicts a neutral observation and confusions created in 'Working together relationships'.

The movie will be a sure flop on box office because it'll have only specific set of patient viewers, though it's a very must watch specially for them who observe/encounter people doing similar activities . (9/10 rating) ^_^

    Warning: Spoilers
I was really interested that new concepts are hitting the marquee but many times filmmakers fail to translate them in something effective Sudhir Mishra, One of the finest filmmakers but he isn't sure how to take this story forward. The film starts off well, with interviews and then backstories, even the past is shown well, the going-ons do get tiring with the sudden back and front technique but yet one awaits to see what is going to happen But the politics shown in office is very oldfashioned and also the corporate life, I mean several technicalities are not defined properly like the work of CEO is not shown properly The end is very half baked, All of a sudden Sudhir seems not sure how to end it and it ends on a predictable half baked solution

Direction is good but not at his best Music is okay

Arjun Rampal looks the character and does a superb job Chitraganda however looks too made up and fails to come with a natural performance Deepti Naval is okay,Vipin Sharma and others are good in their parts
  • Inkaar (which translates to "Refusal" in English) is a 2013 Hindi film written and directed by renowned Indian filmmaker Sudhir Mishra. Inkaar stars Chitrangada Singh and Arjun Rampal in the lead roles. While this is the third Sudhir Misha film that stars Chitrangada Singh in the lead— the other two being Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi (2003) and Yeh Saali Zindagi (2011)—it's the first time that Arjun Rampal has teamed up with Mishra.

In Inkaar, Sudhir Mishra puts the spotlight on the highly contentious issue of sexual harassment in corporate circles. The movie tries to define the term "sexual harassment" by highlighting the complexities associated with it. The greatest challenge is to draw the line between flirtation and harassment. Once that is taken care of the next challenge is to fathom the reality that, contrary to the popular belief, both the sexes are equally prone to sexual harassment. And that's where the subjective element comes into the picture. Who's the victim? Who's the accused? Thus, it becomes a real nightmare situation to deal with. As a senior female lawyer aptly describes in the movie, "It's often much easier to prove rape than sexual harassment". The story of Inkaar presents one such case of alleged sexual harassment.

As the hearing progresses, it becomes more and more difficult to discern who is speaking the truth and who is not. While the versions of the accused and the victim only differ slightly there is enough deviation to perplex the most astute of minds. The manner of proceedings, though completely alien to Indian cinema, is strikingly similar to Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa's groundbreaking masterpiece Rashomon (1950), which is widely regarded as a cinematic treatise on the subjectivity of truth.

Overall, Inkaar despite its flaws is a commendable work of cinema that brings to the fore some serious issues concerning the corporate culture. Through the microcosmic world of an advertisement agency, Mishra presents to us the pitiful tale of human detachment that's slowly becoming a reality. Inkaar is brilliant from the technical point of view. The editing is absolutely brilliant and the same can be said about its music. The acting is above average. Mishra elicits a remarkably strong performance from Arjun Rampal. Chitrangada Singh is ever so delightful as the dusky, sensual Maya Luthra. Deepti Naval cameo is a major highlight of the movie. Apparently, Naval replaced Mishra's ex- wife Sushmita Mukherjee who, because of her tight television schedule, failed to spare any dates for the movie. Saurabh Shukla makes his presence felt in an interesting item number that he gets to perform in the movie. The lead actors get good support from the supporting cast. Inkaar with its slow character development, ambiguous themes, and deceptive direction is ought to disappoint an average viewer whose sole purpose is entertainment, but an intelligent viewer who is patient enough to wait for the different layers to slowly get unwrapped will be rewarded. 7.5/10

  • Acting by both leads - not good enough - 2/10.

    Story - too confusing - 2/10.

Plot - interesting could be better - 6/10.

Direction - expect better work from Sudhir Mishra - 3/10.

    Music - decent enough - 5/10.

Editing - Too much back and forth in the story makes it confusing for a people - 4/10

    Arjun Rampal - good - 7/10.

    Chitrangada Singh - Superb. Hot. Amazing looks. - 15 / 10

I suggest watch the movie to see Chitrangada Singh if you are a guy or for Arjun Rampal if you are a girl. The story / plot / acting is not worth looking forward to. Very complex story with confusing editing.
  • Warning: Spoilers
Sudhir Mishra, the director of INKAAR said it is one of the best films of 2013. It was a pretty good idea - male-female relationships and love in the Indian corporate environment where women have increasing access to top positions. But the basic plot was too clichéd. The investigation committee scenes came across as too contrived.

The film is pretty intense in places. I guess the film does realistically portray the way Indian yuppies talk. I just don't like the way they talk. Chithrangada Singh looks gorgeous but her histrionic abilities are limited.Tthe scene where she tells ARJUN RAMPAL - "come and get me" was as funny as PRIYANKA CHOPRA yelling "bring out the animal in me" in AITRAAZ.

The film could have been a good 20 minutes shorter. The music was a bit of a distraction. Some people consider this film to be important because it predicted the Tejpal affair. I am not too convinced.

    (4/10)
  • Director is very firm on what he wanted to show. Surprisingly good acting by Arjun Rampal. Liked the plot. Director is successful in making audience glued to seat to know the result. Story is really neutral and being a corporate employee, you will find yourself somewhere in the film. On top of that the subject is picked at very right time as similar kind of news are being gossiped in society. I am very sure that it wont be a blockbuster as audience nowadays demands only "Masala" and time pass movies instead of quality movies. Although this movie demands corporate class of audience, anyone can see this just to feel the politics that goes on in private sector.

But Kudos to the team for making such effort.!!!

I am usually very picky with Indian movies and rarely have a favourite.... and despite the reviews I'd heard and read, this movie was definitely time well spent.

I think vital to any good movie is not only obviously a great script, but also great chemistry and acting - and this movie did not disappoint in all. I loved the detailed layering the actors gave to their characters and made them believable and realistic.

The only bad thing I would like to add is I think more background profile on the main characters would have been nice, as well as perhaps more scenes on how the romance starts in the first place.

But other than that, I liked this movie enough to come on here and review it. So do give this movie a chance and pay no mind to the critics. It may not be the BEST movie you have ever seen, but I can guarantee you a good storyline with great acting especially if you are into these angst-filled reality-based stories.
  • Warning: Spoilers
Inkaar turns out to be an impeccable movie to be made on issue as serious as sexual harassment. Hindi cinema has created very few movies on corporate issues (Corporate, Turning 30 to name a few). Inkaar undoubtedly will lead this chart. the storyline is very tightly written so is the screenplay, leaving viewers stick to their seats till the end. as far as acting is considered, everyone played their part beautifully, Chitrangada and Arjun Rampal looked graceful, complementing each other. It is very obvious here to say that Sudhir Mishra has created a gem (after Ye Saali Zindagi, another very good paisa vasool movie). Surely a must watch for everyone.
  • Anyone thinking of watching the movie after going through the reviews, don't waste your time! Just go and watch the movie. The performances are just breathtaking with the lead actors Arjun Rampal and Chitrangadha Singh being simple outstanding. I never knew that Arjun Rampal could act so well. The intensity is just mind blowing. The direction is pretty sleak and taut. I haven't seen anything like this in Indian cinema.
  • The movie comes out as refreshingly real and the artistic view by the director unfolds the untold stories right to the viewers face. The raunchy chemistry between the leads holds the viewer throughout making him the involuntary judge until the last bit. What keeps you going is the narration of the same situations from different perspectives. the uncertainties of two people in love;if they can really trust each other and let it all go or if it worth sacrificing their hard earned success for a bunch of tingling feelings at this age where power and money is all that matters. The friction between the genders at workplace is smoothly narrated with no obscenity overdone.

All in all, a 2 hour treat for a corporate worker to see the bigger picture and speculate his/her priorities. All kudos to Arjun Rampal and Chitrangada Singh for their bold performances. Good job!
