Hollywood is at risk of entering a “negative feedback loop” with fewer wide movie releases and a shrinking theater footprint combining to squeeze box office revenue, a veteran media analyst says.

In his annual assessment of the theatrical sector, billed as a “memo to Hollywood,” Td Cowen analyst Doug Creutz notes that he has taken a “bearish stance” on the theatrical window for some time. Results from 2024, with total grosses slipping 4% from 2023 to $8.57 billion, the number of wide releases down 6% from pre-Covid levels, and other factors have only reinforced his view.

“We have said for several years now that the outlook for a sustained recovery looks questionable, and that we don’t think the existing global theatrical footprint can be supported solely by a handful of blockbusters,” Creutz wrote in the 20-page report.

The American Cinema Editors (Ace) has announced its winners for the 2025 Ace Eddie Awards, which recognizes “outstanding editing in 14 categories of film, television and documentaries.”

Emilia Pérez and Wicked won in the feature film categories, while The Wild Robot and Will & Harper won best animated feature and documentary feature, respectively. What We Do in the Shadows, Shogun and Baby Reindeer won in the TV categories, among others.

The 75th annual ceremony celebrating the best editing of the year was originally set to take place on Jan. 18 before it was postponed due to the L.A. wildfires.

Surprise: Mikey Madison wins over award season darling Demi Moore

Demi Moore’s brave performance in “The Substance” seemed like it was a shoo-in for the best actress statue, given her redemption arc throughout award season and wins at the Globes, SAGs and Critics Choice Awards. Yet Madison’s performance helped “Anora” — which was awarded best picture immediately after her win — lead the night.

Snub: Original Song performances nixed

Some of the most memorable Oscar moments of all time have been the best original song performances, from Diana Ross and Lionel Richie’s 1982 rendition of “Endless Love” to last year’s “I’m Just Ken” spectacular.

The Oscars very rarely recognize superhero/comic book movies, but 2024 was a particularly bad year for the genre, so it was hardly surprising when even what would be widely regarded as the best of the bunch, Deadpool and Wolverine, didn't receive any nominations - though some feel the block-busting Marvel Studios team-up should have picked up a few in the technical categories.

Inside Out 2 writer Dave Holstein is priming for a return to Riley's mind for a third installment. During an exclusive interview with The Direct at the 52nd Saturn Awards, Holstein confirmed wheels are turning on a potential Inside Out film franchise, despite still waiting for an official green light on a threequel.

Holstein asserted he had "no doubt that at some point a third" movie would be produced, revealing that early, albeit "minimal" development had started on Inside Out 3. His optimism extends beyond just one more movie, though.

In my opinion, four through six, seven, eight, Inside Out [movies] should happen.

It’s finally time for the 97th Academy Awards, as the 2024-2025 awards season comes to a close and we hand out some Oscars. And this year, Sean Baker’s sex worker dramedy Anora ended up triumphing, winning five awards including Best Picture, Best Director, and Lead Actress for Mikey Madison.

This meant that Demi Moore, long considered the favorite to win for her work in The Substance, ended up losing out. In other categories, Adrian Brody won Lead Actor for his work in Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, while Kieran Culkin picked up his expected trophy for A Real Pain and Zoe Saldaña overcame the Emilia Pérez controversy to win for Supporting Actress.
