Hollywood is at risk of entering a “negative feedback loop” with fewer wide movie releases and a shrinking theater footprint combining to squeeze box office revenue, a veteran media analyst says.
In his annual assessment of the theatrical sector, billed as a “memo to Hollywood,” Td Cowen analyst Doug Creutz notes that he has taken a “bearish stance” on the theatrical window for some time. Results from 2024, with total grosses slipping 4% from 2023 to $8.57 billion, the number of wide releases down 6% from pre-Covid levels, and other factors have only reinforced his view.
“We have said for several years now that the outlook for a sustained recovery looks questionable, and that we don’t think the existing global theatrical footprint can be supported solely by a handful of blockbusters,” Creutz wrote in the 20-page report.
The number of screens in the U.S. has declined to about 35,000 from 41,000 before Covid struck in...

When people talk about animated movies, many think of Disney. Disney has released some iconic and popular animated films, from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to the recently released Moana 2. Through their partnership with Pixar Animations Studios, Disney released more memorable films like Toy Story, Monsters Inc., and Inside Out. Yet, while Disney animated films remain some of the best animated movies, there are many others released by other studios that are just as good as Disney animated movies or better.
With the success of the animated adventure film Flow, which won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, many are looking at animated movies outside the ones produced by Disney. Over the years, there have been many animated movies from studios like DreamWorks Animation and 20th Century Studios that managed to win over viewers. And while Walt Disney Animation Studios remains the leading studio for animated movies, there...

Nothing destroys a film's momentum quite like bombing at the box office. While poorly received movies can still be successful should they gross a lot of money, even the most critically acclaimed film is considered a failure if it fails to make its money back upon release. Walt Disney's entertainment juggernaut is all too familiar with financially destitute films, as not every picture can be a winner.
Most know Walt Disney Studios for its load of successful Marvel, animated, and Star Wars movies, Disney's films are all over the list of the worst box office bombs of all time as well. From the well-known to the more forgotten, Disney has made its mark in the annals of most successful and least successful films. But some flopped so badly as to be considered the very bottom of the bottom.

[This story contains major spoilers from the season two finale of Severance, “Cold Harbor.”]
Directed by Ben Stiller and written by creator Dan Erickson, the ominously named “Cold Harbor” season two finale finally answered the mystery at the heart of the title: what is Cold Harbor, and what’s going to happen to Gemma (Dichen Lachman) once Mark (Adam Scott) completes the file?
The resolution (spoiler alert!) is a violent one, with the innie and outie versions of Mark collaborating with one another to spring Gemma out of Lumon once and for all — even though it’s not a collaboration that comes easily, nor is it one that ends particularly well, at least not for Outie Mark.
Below, The Hollywood Reporter rounds up the biggest highlights of the finale, with the Severance cast and crew weighing in on how it all went down and what it sets up for the future of the Apple TV+ series, which was officially renewed for...

As Figment fans will know, it all starts with One Little Spark, and Disney CEO Bob Iger has certainly ignited imaginations with his recent comments about the beloved Epcot character. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney's annual shareholder meeting raised questions about Figment's future, as Iger was quizzed on the subject during Thursday's session. One shareholder reportedly asked if there were any plans to use the madcap mascot in other forms of media outside the theme park, to which Iger suggested that Figment could appear in a future series or short-form content.
"This is my 24th year. 18th as CEO, and I think the question about Figment has been asked about 15 times. We know that he's popular with shareholders, the fact that they ask questions about him all the time. But we also know that he's popular at Epcot where you can meet him and journey into imagination. Disney CEO Bob Iger is giving in to popular demand and says he will consider doing more with the beloved Epcot character of Figment.
The purple dragon character is featured in the theme park ride Journey Into Imagination With Figment at Epcot in Florida at the Walt Disney World Resort and also greets guests inside the Imagination! pavilion. During Thursday’s Disney shareholder meeting, Iger was asked by a shareholder if he would consider using the character, who represents the broader theme of imagination, in other parts of the business.

In a splashy 20-minute segment at Disney’s annual shareholder meeting, CEO Bob Iger touted a handful of high-priority film and TV projects as the company looks to maintain its recent studio momentum.
Avatar: Fire and Ash, Lilo & Stitch and Alien: Earth were three titles given a spotlight, with new footage of the latter two introduced.
Iger said he has seen “an early cut” of the upcoming third installment of director James Cameron’s billion-dollar Avatar franchise. “I can tell you that it is absolutely breathtaking,” he said.
While no new images or footage was revealed from the three-hour-plus Cameron epic, which will bow December 19, a “special extended look” at Lilo & Stitch was shown during the livestreamed meeting. It was a...

Remember when Pixar changed animation forever with the bold, inventive, and otherwise creative "Toy Story?" How about when the studio continued to release original movies that pushed the medium of animation forward while exploring vastly different stories and genres? Sure, there were sequels even in the earlier days, but not only did movies like "Toy Story 2" actually provide something new and different from their predecessors, but they were also balanced out by twice as many original Pixar movies.
Well, say goodbye to the good old days! Pixar, like its parent company Walt Disney Studios, is now all about chasing the mighty and elusive dollar with artistically-dubious sequels that parents will go to movie theaters to see because there is virtually nothing else to entertain kids with at the movies. We already knew Pixar was making not just another "Toy Story" sequel, but also a third "The Incredibles" movie. Now,...

Disney and Pixar are returning to Land of the Dead for “Coco 2.”
Disney’s CEO Bob Iger announced the follow-up film during the company’s annual shareholder meeting. The sequel, which is early in the development process, is slated for theatrical release in 2029. Plot details haven’t been revealed.
“While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart and adventure,” he said. “And we can’t wait to share more soon.”
“Coco” director Lee Unkrich is returning to direct with Adrian Molina. Mark Nielsen, a Pixar veteran known for “Toy Story 4” and “Inside Out 2,” will produce.
The original 2017 film became a critical and commercial smash, winning two Oscars while grossing over $800 million at the global box office. The story follows 12-year-old Miguel, who dreams of playing the guitar despite his family’s generations-old ban on music. On the Mexican...

Pixar and Disney released a new trailer for their next original film “Elio.” The trailer has done well in views, sitting at 4.9 million in under 24 hours and the comments are mostly positive too. However, one thing I noticed repeated in the comments and on other social media platforms is that people want to support the film, even if it’s not good, to save original films.
Here is the new “Elio” trailer,
This is the film synopsis,
“For centuries, people have called out to the universe looking for answers—in Disney and Pixar’s all-new feature film “Elio,” the universe calls back! The cosmic misadventure introduces Elio, a space fanatic with an active imagination and a huge alien obsession. So, when he’s beamed up to the Communiverse, an interplanetary organization with representatives from galaxies far and wide, Elio’s all in for the epic undertaking. Mistakenly identified as Earth’s leader,...

Market movies are majorly marketed toward kids, but let’s be real, some of the best films of all time have come from animation. If you have seen movies like the Toy Story franchise, Woody and Buzz always have an amazing tale to share with some of the best messages. Even Lightning McQueen’s redemption in Cars is proof that animation isn’t just for kids.
Animated films have the ability to bend stories easily due to a lack of realism, and this gives creators great freedom in creating movies and stories that would be hard to make with real-life actors. Signs of a good animated movie will have a balance of stunning visuals, a heartfelt story, and good humor.

Following this trend, another beloved animated film is getting a live-action remake: Lilo & Stitch. The original 2002 film followed a young Hawaiian girl named Lilo Pelekai, and her older sister, Nani, adopting an alien. Magical as it is, Disneyland at night can lead to sensory overload pretty quickly. And tonight, in the middle of it all, amid the smiling...

Win or Lose is breaking a lot of ground in the media. Not only is it Pixar's first original animated series, but it rose from a tumultuous developmental phase and gave audiences Disney's first openly Christian character in decades.
Since there's no such thing as bad publicity, Disney and Pixar decided to up the ante and take the next step to get the media buzzing: they made the first episode 100% free to watch on YouTube.
Stirring the pot, or genius marketing move?

For years, the Pixar Theory Timeline has been circulating on the internet. This timeline connects every movie in the Pixar universe. Author Jon Negroni, around 2012, proposed that Pixar intentionally leaves clues that indicate their movies occur in the same timeline and space, if people know how to arrange them. Negroni himself proposes a particular timeline for the movies that clearly shows how every installment connects to the following one.
The Pixar Theory Timeline proposes that from The Good Dinosaur to Monsters Inc., Pixar shows a society that has evolved into different species and technologies over the years. The main drive for all these movies seems to be that technology drastically changes the Earth, initiating new cycles of life. However, all of these beings are alive thanks to the power of human emotions.

Since the establishment of the Best Animated Feature category at the Oscars in 2002, Disney animated films have been racking up the award. With beloved Academy Award Winners like Finding Nemo, Ratatouille, and Zootopia, Disney has continued its animation empire with every win they've secured.
While Disney films still lead the race in many cases, the medium of animation is vast, and the Academy has given the Best Animated Feature award to other animation studios for their unique style and storytelling achievements. Even though these Disney films lost, their impact on audiences is significant. They are remembered and referred to by many as excellent films even though they didn't take home the gold statue.

Deadpool & Wolverine opened with Wade Wilson pulling off some impressive dance moves to the tune of Nsync's "Bye Bye Bye." However, it wasn't Ryan Reynolds in the suit; instead, dancer Nick Pauley took on the role of the McU's "Dancepool."
During Sunday's 97th Academy Awards, host Conan O'Brien performed "I Won't Waste Time" and was accompanied on stage by Dune: Part Two's Sandworm and Deadpool & Wolverine's titular Merc with the Mouth.
The Marvel Studios movie didn't receive a single nomination - much to the chagrin of many comic book fans - but Deadpool's cameo felt like an acknowledgement of what a positive impact the threequel made to theaters in 2024.
Now, Pauley has taken to Instagram to confirm he once again donned the suit for the Oscars. He also credited Ryan Reynolds for advocating that he be the one who hit the stage as "Dancepool."

Mikey Madison was already starting to get a lot of attention thanks to her lead performance in Sean Baker's Anora, but Sunday's surprise Best Actress Oscar win is certain to make the 25-year-old a highly in-demand star in Hollywood.
Major studios are sure to have reached out already, and we're now hearing that Madison could be in line to play a character in an upcoming Marvel Studios project.
We don't have much to go on, but scooper Daniel Richtman is reporting that Madison is "being considered" for an MCU role.
It's always worth keeping in mind that Marvel Studios meets with and reaches out to a lot of talent (it might be quicker to list the people that haven't been up for a part at one point or another), so this is far from a guarantee that Madison is even in talks with the studio.
Even so, there's already...

Last night's Academy Awards show was a relatively scandal free affair, but one particular joke did result in some gasps from the celeb-filled audience in attendance.
At one point, O'Brien introduced the heroic members of the LA Fire Department who battled this year’s devastating Palisades and Eaton wildfires, and used the opportunity to slip in a few of his... harsher gags.
“Now, I know you’re going to find this hard to believe, but there are some jokes even I’m not brave enough to tell,” said the host before adding. “On behalf of myself, would you please read what’s in the prompter? Remember — everyone in this audience has to laugh; these are heroes!”
Los Angeles Fire Department captain Erik Scott kicked things off with a very funny dig at Todd Phillips' much-maligned Joker sequel: “Our hearts go out to those who have lost their homes. And I...

The Academy Awards took place yesterday evening and, as per usual, the results have split opinions. Anora was the surprise Best Picture winner, with Wicked and Conclave failing to keep the momentum going following other recent award ceremonies.
Conan O'Brien hosted this year's and his performance of "I Won't Waste Time" was accompanied by surprise appearances from Dune: Part Two's Sandworm and Deadpool & Wolverine's Dancepool.
We don't know who was in the suit, though the Merc with the Mouth - who O'Brien reminded us wasn't among the nominees - pulled off some familiar Backstreet Boys-inspired dance moves before making his exit.
Ryan Reynolds initially embarked on a pretty robust "FYC" campaign for Deadpool & Wolverine, though it quickly lost momentum. The movie, which was a box office hit, wasn't exactly considered a critical darling with 78% on Rotten Tomatoes.
You may recall that were was some chatter about Reynolds...

After a chaotic and, at times unpredictable awards season, it all came down to this –– the big show. Hosted by Conan O'Brien, the 97th Academy Awards happened Sunday evening in Los Angeles, and Anora emerged as Best Picture.
With a surprising sweep of several major categories –– also including Best Director, Original Screenplay and Editing for filmmaker Sean Baker (who becomes the first person to win four Oscars in one night) and a somewhat surprising win for star Mikey Madison over Demi Moore –– Anora became the little indie that could.
This was a year that the academy members chose to spread the Oscar love –– The Brutalist's Adrien Brody was named Best Actor, while Lol Crawley won Cinematography and Daniel Blumberg's score saw him take the stage for an emotional, nervous speech.
Wicked, meanwhile, won Costume Design and Production Design, Dune 2 took Sound and Visual Effects, while Emilia Pérez' Zoe...

The 97th Academy Awards was a joyous affair, full of big orchestral numbers, celebrity singalongs and a triumphant hosting debut from Conan O’Brien. While “Anora” led the night with five wins, there were several snubs and surprises. Check out our list of the biggest unexpected moments below.
Surprise: Mikey Madison wins over award season darling Demi Moore
Demi Moore’s brave performance in “The Substance” seemed like it was a shoo-in for the best actress statue, given her redemption arc throughout award season and wins at the Globes, SAGs and Critics Choice Awards. Yet Madison’s performance helped “Anora” — which was awarded best picture immediately after her win — lead the night.
Snub: Original Song performances nixed
Some of the most memorable Oscar moments of all time have been the best original song performances, from Diana Ross and Lionel Richie’s 1982 rendition of “Endless Love” to last year’s “I’m Just Ken” spectacular.

The 97th Academy Awards have wrapped and the entire 2025 Oscars winners list has been unveiled. We live updated the winners list throughout the entire night as the statuettes were handed out at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
“Anora” won five of the six Oscars for which it was nominated: Best Picture, Best Director Sean Baker, Best Original Screenplay (also for Baker), Best Editor (Baker again), and Best Actress for Mikey Madison. the only category it lost was Yura Borisov’s nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
Anne Thompson’s final predictions were mostly right! It was undeniable that the Oscar race changed dramatically since the nominations were announced on January 23, and “Emilia Pérez” received 13 nods, the most ever for a non-English-language movie. The Jacques Audiard film ended up winning just two awards.
Indeed, when all was said and done, only the supporting categories were near-locks, as Kieran Culkin won Best...

The 97th Academy Awards ceremony has just finished up, and we have a full list of winners in all the major categories below.
The Oscars very rarely recognize superhero/comic book movies, but 2024 was a particularly bad year for the genre, so it was hardly surprising when even what would be widely regarded as the best of the bunch, Deadpool and Wolverine, didn't receive any nominations - though some feel the block-busting Marvel Studios team-up should have picked up a few in the technical categories.
Several movies we have covered were nominated in major categories, however, including Dune: Part Two, The Substance, and Wicked (all for Best Picture). In the end, though, it was Anora that wound up taking home surprise wins for Best Picture, Director (Sean Baker) and Best Actress (Mikey Madison).

Since its introduction in 2002 at the 74th Academy Awards, the Best Animated Feature category has emerged as a tribute to the realm of animation, with Shrek clinching the inaugural award. This award recognizes the remarkable creativity of filmmakers who bring stories to life through diverse evolving animation techniques, captivating characters, and limitless possibilities of imaginative worlds.
Disney and Pixar have consistently exerted a formidable influence in this category, producing award-winning films ranging from timeless classics like Finding Nemo, Up, and Toy Story 3, to groundbreaking works such as Inside Out, Soul, and Encanto. The ascent of 3D animation has also paved the way for other studios to claim victory in this category, such as films like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Guillermo del Toro’s interpretation of Pinocchio.

Inside Out 2 writer Dave Holstein is priming for a return to Riley's mind for a third installment. During an exclusive interview with The Direct at the 52nd Saturn Awards, Holstein confirmed wheels are turning on a potential Inside Out film franchise, despite still waiting for an official green light on a threequel.
Holstein asserted he had "no doubt that at some point a third" movie would be produced, revealing that early, albeit "minimal" development had started on Inside Out 3. His optimism extends beyond just one more movie, though.
In my opinion, four through six, seven, eight, Inside Out [movies] should happen.
Inside Out 2 Writer Reveals Franchise Plans, Potential Characters Two Deleted Characters Might Be Resurrected For Inside Out 3
Holstein also dished on potential plot points for future Inside Out movies, pointing to the evolution of Inside Out and Inside Out 2's human protagonist, Riley, as a wellspring for storytelling opportunities.

It’s finally time for the 97th Academy Awards, as the 2024-2025 awards season comes to a close and we hand out some Oscars. And this year, Sean Baker’s sex worker dramedy Anora ended up triumphing, winning five awards including Best Picture, Best Director, and Lead Actress for Mikey Madison.

In other categories, Adrian Brody won Lead Actor for his work in Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, while Kieran Culkin picked up his expected trophy for A Real Pain and Zoe Saldaña overcame the Emilia Pérez controversy to win for Supporting Actress.

will there be a sequel for Inside Out 2? ( Photo Credit – YouTube )
Inside Out 2 took audiences on another emotional rollercoaster, reigniting love for Pixar’s deeply imaginative storytelling. Nearly a decade after the first film, the sequel captured the complexity of adolescence, bringing in new emotions and pushing the boundaries of Riley’s evolving mindscape. The wait was long, but it was worth it. Inside Out 2 became a box office sensation, grossing over $1.7 billion and securing its place as one of Pixar’s biggest hits.
With that kind of success, fans are already eager for a third installment. Pixar is known for taking its time between sequels, and with Inside Out 2 arriving nine years after the original, there was concern that another long wait was inevitable. However, recent updates from the film’s writer suggest that Inside Out 3 may not take nearly as long to materialize. With...

The Oz-set blockbuster, plus the Inside Out and Dune sequels, packed out cinemas but won’t win best picture at Sunday’s Academy Awards
Box-office success is a strong indicator of Oscars failure at this year’s Academy Awards, with the two highest-grossing best picture nominees among those titles least likely to win.
Wicked and Dune: Part Two have both made more than $700m globally, but neither is tipped – by anyone – to pick up the top prize on Sunday in Hollywood. Wicked, Jon M Chu’s first half of his adaptation of the Broadway musical, is currently on $728m, from an estimated $150m production budget.

One of Pixar's writing team let slip that work has already started on Inside Out 3.
Nearly a decade after the first movie, Inside Out returned to theaters in 2024 with the long-awaited sequel, Inside Out 2.
Despite earning slightly softer reviews than the first movie, Inside Out 2 would prove to be a massive win for Disney and Pixar, raking in nearly $1.7 billion at the global box office (something that would even delay its streaming release) and cementing the series' place as a tent pole franchise for the acclaimed animation studio.

The all-time champ for the most wins ever for The Golden Schmoes is still The Dark Knight, with 12 wins.
Both Dune: Part Two and The Substance are Academy favourites this year, while Deadpool & Wolverine was mostly overlooked. However, one movie that’s beloved by the Academy, Emilia Perez, was seemingly hated by our voters,...
