I watched this movie after hearing Vernon Davis bring it up on Julian Edelman's podcast. I've always been a big Vernon Davis fan and thought it was really interesting to hear that he is an actor now. They didn't really give away much information on this movie or what Vernon's role was so I pretty much went in blind. He was honestly only in this movie for like 15 minutes but his part was probably the funniest of the whole movie. Seeing him teach a pregnancy class was so unexpected and I had the biggest smile on my face during that whole scene. I don't want to give too much away, but he has an interaction with someone in the class that is absolutely hysterical. I hope he does more movies like this. I can totally see him being an actor like John Cena or The Rock. Like I said, Vernon was just a supporting character but the rest of the movie was really solid. The storyline was really good and it had good laughs sprinkled throughout. Jon Heder was really funny too. I couldn't remember the last time I saw him in a movie so hopefully this marks a comeback for him.
I decided to watch this movie after seeing all of the funny people who are in it. Jon Heder from Napoleon Dynamite is the male lead. Then Shannon Elizabeth (Jay and Silent Bob, American Pie, Scary Movie) and Kate Flannery (Meredith from the Office) play supporting roles. I honestly wasn't familiar with the female lead, Jamie Lee but she was really funny and was a believable partner for Jon Heder. The NFL player Vernon Davis is in this too, though I honestly didn't connect the dots that it was him until I looked at the credits afterwards. I didn't know he was an actor now but he was really funny in this. This was really just such a fun pregnancy comedy movie. I'd put it up there with Baby Mama and Knocked Up. My only complaint was that Shannon Elizabeth wasn't in it as much as I thought she'd be. She's probably only in it for 10-15 minutes.
I watched this on Apple TV last night and was pleasantly surprised to say the least. I love comedy movies and this one not only has a very original premise (which is apparently hard to do) but it also stars Jon Heder who I hadn't seen in a while. Even though this is marketed as a romantic comedy, I'd say it's way funnier than most of the romcoms coming out nowadays. In terms of humor, it definitely falls in the realm of the R-rated Judd Apatow style romcoms like Trainwreck and Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Speaking of, Jamie Lee from Apatow's HBO series Crashing is the lead in this alongside Heder. She's fantastic in this. I hadn't seen her in anything since Crashing and this looks like her first lead role in a movie. I wouldn't be shocked if she starts starring in big blockbuster comedies after this. If you read the logline, you already know that her character is doing something despicable, but she is so funny and charming that you can't help but root for her.
I had never heard of this movie but watched it after it was highlighted in a movie review by Spoiler Alert. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and felt compelled to write a review since I didn't see much promotion for it. Overall, the story was well crafted and this had more laugh out loud moments than any other comedy movie I've seen in recent memory. I'm not typically a fan of romantic comedies and usually more of a sci-fi and horror fan so I'm not really the target audience for this so I think that people who like romcoms or comedies in general would rate this higher than I would. One of the main reasons that I watched this was because Jon Heder is the male lead. I grew up watching him in Benchwarmers, Blades of Glory, and of course Napoleon Dynamite. I hadn't seen him in anything for years but he was awesome in this. He wasn't the typically nerdy character he usually plays. Sure he's quirky in this, but his character really has some depth here and he shows range I didn't know he was capable of. Hopefully this leads to some more Jon Heder movies because he's one of those actors that I think everyone likes. 6/10 for me but if you like comedies or romcoms, definitely give this a watch.
This is one of the funniest independent movies I've seen all year. I loved the zaniness to the story and how the characters were not exaggerated or over the top. While it's not a romantic movie and much of it is predictable, the film's locations and cultural references made it a fun experience.
Jamie Lee is excellent as the conniving Piper. Jon Heder needed this resurgence - it was a perfect role for him. The one thing preventing me from scoring the movie higher was that some characters were under utilized or not well defined. I think that showing more scenes of how Piper interacted with Cameron's (or perhaps Evan's parents) would have upped the ante. Imagine being told that you're going to become grandparents for the first time, and that dream is snatched away from you. That would have been an interesting reaction to see.
The movie ended on a sweet note, although abruptly. So I do recommend that folks watch this for a date night. Not quite a masterpiece, but it's good-natured and well acted.
