  • Warning: Spoilers
After the end of the film, you are left in a state of disbelief, wondering how can a man who looks so innocent and simple, has two daughters, and has protected his own daughter from molestation in the past do something like this. The answer to that question, is the whole point of the film. There are certain kind of people, who we feel just cannot bring any kind of harm to us; we find it difficult to believe even when a hundred fingers are being pointed at them; but the truth is that in more than eighty percent of sexual assault cases, the victim is known to the perpetrator.

We are shown Saravanan as a very scary and threatening man, our mind automatically makes an assumption that perhaps he is a bad person. On the other hand, we come across, Brahmanandam, a very old man who walks slowly and smiles gently towards his daughter, and the assumption we make is that this man can do no harm to anyone, he just doesn't look frightening at all, and he is in all probability a good man. But the movie enlightens you with a truth that leaves you dumbfounded. Looks can be deceptive, the way people behave with you might not reveal their true self; how you behave under adverse circumstances, reveals your true character. An enraged Saravanan wanted to kill Gargi's father but as soon as his sight falls on Aksarah, his anger melts away into tears as he doesn't want to hurt the feelings of a little girl. On the other hand, Brahmanandam was also going through a tough time, work pressure was taking a toll on him and he had to arrange money for his daughter's wedding, on top of that he drank alcohol that day; but when he came across a girl in a vulnerable situation, instead of helping her, he allowed the devil inside him to overpower himself.

Despite the serious subject of this film, it makes for an extremely engaging watch, there is not a single dull moment in the film. At the interval point, you are not tired but raring to go into the second half because you are truly invested into the story and Gargi's battle to unravel the truth.

The movie has a very realistic feel to it, be it the houses, the lighting inside them, the way people dress up and the way they interact with each other. Sai Pallavi went in without make-up for this film, and the sarees that she wears are very typical of what a woman belonging to a middle class family would wear at home. The court scenes have always been an exaggerated reality in our movies, but not in his film, as it depicts the court room proceedings in a set-up that is as close as possible to reality.

Indrans, the man who ends up offering legal help to Gargi, has been brilliantly portrayed by Kaali Venkat. Indrans not only provides comic relief but also portrays with full conviction, a man who is trying to overcome his disability and apprehensions in his fight for justice. Another stunning act is the role of the transgender Judge played by Sudha S., her portrayal was that of a strict teacher who knows how to keep the students in check. The monologue of the Judge, in which she teaches the Public Prosecutor a much needed lesson will put a smile on your face, the confidence with which she delivered that dialogue tells a lot about the fantastic acting potential she possesses.

There's a thing about Sai Pallavi, she doesn't really portray a character, she becomes one. Whether she had to portray her fear or hesitation, anger or frustration, Sai Pallavi was pitch perfect in delivering every single emotion in the most grounded of ways. Sai Pallavi is an exceptionally talented actress and when you see this film, you will realize why. The way she dresses up, the way she talks with people, makes you feel that you have seen her somewhere, that's how real her enactment is. Gargi's breakdown sequence in front of her mother towards the end is a result of pent up emotions, her frustrations; the actress in her really makes you believe that she actually went through a lot. Sai Pallavi has delivered a powerhouse of a performance as Gargi, one that is completely drenched in reality.

The background music by Govind Vasantha is another highlight of this film. The background score always managed to elevate the emotion of the situation being depicted in the scene. The cinematography as well as editing of the film deserves praise. The untidy walls, broken doors reflect the financial condition of Gargi's family. When you see her house, you believe that belongs to a lower middle class family, and for that one must give credit to the beautiful work done by the art director of the film.

Gargi is a movie that is not only a thriller, but also showcases the mental trauma that a family has to go through after a loved one gets imprisoned. The harassment that Gargi's family goes through is a very accurate depiction of how it actually happens. Gargi takes up a very sensitive subject and handles it very maturely. Any movie that takes up a social cause needs to be encouraged and supported; but Gargi is much more than that, it has a rock solid screenplay that is paced very well, outstanding performances and a beautiful message. It's a must watch for everyone.

  • Gargi (2022) : Brief Review -

This is how a modern feminine classic looks like, not those vulgar, abusive, and sexually explicit dramas. Sai Pallavi's best role and film to date. I have seen some directors (including female ones) trying to make feminine dramas and give some social messages, but how many of them are actually good and meaningful? This is my chance to bash those sexually explicit and vulgar feminine dramas that usually talk about sexual freedom, age-gaps, and hormone changes. I won't name them, but I am sure smart movie lovers know them, and unfortunately, most of them belong to Bollywood. Gargi has come to slap them all, especially female directors who think that having freedom of sex and extramarital affairs is called true feminism. Gargi is a hard-hitting drama and somewhat of a thriller, with strong emotions and meaningful feminism at its core. There are many films in India on rapes, gang rapes, and child abuse, but believe me, there is none like Gargi. This is a new landmark in feminine classics. This is how you make a modern-day classic without using any sort of vulgarity, adultery, skin-show, or abuse. This is a seminar for families. This is how you showcase true womanhood without using powerful and filmy quotes. Sai Pallavi has given a career best performance and, for me, this is her best film to date. The film throws light on a sensitive topic like child rape, and it does not hammer it through cinematic liberty. This is the simplest form of hard-hitting, brutal film without being 'realistic' (this is what they call those craps nowadays). No matter if you are a male or female, just make sure you watch it with your father, mother, and child (son or daughter). There is something for everyone, because rapes don't happen in the neighbourhood only. Sometimes your house is a neighbourhood for someone. A Must See!

  • Legal dramas have the capacity to instantly enamor audiences, with the protagonist's quest for justice often becoming our own. If Mark Ruffalo's stubborn journey to hold corporate interests to account for their misdeeds was the crux in "Dark Waters (2019), in "Jana Gana Mana (2022)", Prithviraj proved that the truth is not always what it seems. "Gargi" is another compelling movie that redefines the ambit of this genre and anchored by a career-best performance from Sai Pallavi, delivers an end-to-end engaging viewing experience that will stay with you for a long time.

We have seen glimpses of the immense acting powerhouse that is Sai Pallavi in movies like "Premam (2015)" and most recently, "Love Story (2021)", but Gargi is the first movie to fully explore her immense potential. She stars as the titular character, a hardworking teacher who finds herself in the midst of a legal quagmire when her father is arrested for a child molestation case. Caught between an apathetic legal system and a suspicious society that is quick to judge, how she navigates the hardships that come her way and try to find justice for her father forms the rest of the story.

Director Gautham Ramachandran gets his casting spot on with Kaali Venkat excelling as Gargi's lawyer "Indrans" while Saravan delivers a tour de force performance as "Kundhava", the beleaguered father of the abused child. The haunting music by Govind Vasantha adds edginess and melancholy at appropriate junctures in the narration and plays no small part in building up the tension and intrigue as we head into the climax of a daughter's crusade for justice.

Sai Pallavi's performance should make a strong case for a National Award, such is the grace and poise she brings to the character. Only an actress of her caliber could have communicated such vulnerability and emotion and still remain committed and earnest in her pursuit to exonerate her father. With the possible exception of "Kadaisi Vivasayi", "Gargi" is easily the best film Indian cinema has produced in 2022 so far and is an absolute must-watch. Highly recommended!
  • A new different storyline , miles away from latka jhatka dances and unrealistic fights , this one clicks all the boxes . Kudos to the entire movie team , I'm not familiar with the cast as I'm from delhi but yeah I can say that everyone played their role to the perfection . 👍👍👍👍

Emotional and impactful . First I wasn't much interested in watching this movie , after some good response from famous reviewers I want to jus give a try . Gargi deals with sensitive subject , it was very well handled . Gautham Ramachandran as a director did a great job , I really liked his way of making , handling it in realistic way and also in writing part he never failed . Movie was realistic as well as intresting too . Emotion , drama , investigation and pain everything was well potrayed , even few comedies which were well placed ( not forced ) in the movie and worked well . Sai Pallavi literally gave one of the best performance in her career . Kali Venkat as supporting actor gave a good performance . I should really mention Saravanan's performance , he acted as father of Victim , his emotional scenes and frustrations of father were very well potrayed . Technical wise cinematography was good . Music was literally backbone . Overall movie delivers a strong message in strong way . Please don't miss it to watch it on big screen .
  • This courtroom drama is real. There is even a dialogue that says what you can prove is needed than what you know. The scenes and dialogues haunts you even after the movie ends. One of the greatest movies made in Tamil cinema. The Director cleverly used the slow motion shots at right places instead of a pact editing. Hats off! Must watch!!
  • If everyone does one or something right, the world will be a better place.

The director's message at the end of it.

Beautifully crafted story and nicely executed by Sai Pallavi. While the movie is centered around her, others (ooh the Judge !! Nice selection and excellent presence) also pitch in.

    Must watch.
  • Warning: Spoilers
Sai Pallavi is outstanding n she makes us feel her pain more than the victim!

The direction, screen play, emotion everything was perfect. But the climax spoiled it i feel. The dad dint have a background or how could the dad be so inhuman to do something so brutal to the kid after seeing her in that state. Not justified . Wish if this reason was sort. Then it made much sense !
  • Director Gautham Ramachandran's (Richie) sophomore feature starring Sai Pallavi in the lead is without doubt one of the best films of the year. The film also marks actress Aishwarya Lekshmi's foray into production.

Set in Chennai, Sai Pallavi's Gargi is shocked to the core when her father is accussed of rape. Gargi then sets out to prove his innocence with the help of an inexperienced lawyer.

I am pretty sure this film is going to be remade in other languages (especially Hindi because the Telugu & Kannada dubbed versions already exist). And I am quite sure the casting will be disastrous because no one can match Sai Pallavi's performance as the devout daughter, Gargi. From her debut in Premam, Sai Pallavi has always been a treat to watch onscreen.

Her co-stars; Kaali Venkat plays her lawyer, Indrans. Inexperienced but the only who understands her plight. R S Shivaji as her father & Sudha S as the judge both excel in their roles. Aishwarya Lekshmi has a brief role as a journalist.

Gargi is a legal drama that rests on the very able shoulders of its cast (Sai Pallavi and Kaali Venkat) and the storytelling prowess of Hariharan Raju and Gautham Ramachandran. Do not miss this!
  • Sai pallavi excellent , rest of the casting is also great. All actors are apt for the role and done excellent work.

Very realistic movie. Movie is some what slow , but still engaging.
  • Warning: Spoilers
+VE - sai Pallavi acting as usually extraordinary and perfectly played
    • kaali venkat played his role superbly
-VE - Boring screen play -storyline started well and it went annoying bad ending, all her effort ends in veins and completed with a moral what she learn..
  • 1. The 60 yr old father of two daughters who's shown to be very respectable and liked by all cannot rape a 9 year old who has already been raped and is lying in a pool of blood ! And then he himself carries her to her home and suggests taking her to the hospital.

And he also happens to be the watchman of the building which means the victim knows him well - and still he rapes her !!! This is not at all believable - This ending was added just for shock value as it has become customary nowadays to add some "twist" in the end.

    2. I refuse to believe that a "gang" rape of a 9 year old could be "planned in advance". For an adult girl or woman, yes it can be, but for a 9 year old kid, NO ! At best, one person can plan raping a kid, but 5 suggests the society must be full of psychopaths !!

Such crimes are usually committed "on the spot" under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Also doing that "on the stairs" of a building by 5 individuals is again not believable even though it's said the stairs are not frequented by many. One person can do it and get away, but 5 people doing it in broad daylight must need a tremendous amount of luck !!

So overall this movie just didn't work for me, despite the good acting and the good premise. Sorry the film makers must do some analysis into such crimes before putting up such stories. And that ridiculous twist at the end was completely unnecessary!
  • Climax makes it the best movie of the year! Does bring about a powerful message in an impactful way. Doing right is all that matters! Kudos to the team, my ratings 9/10!
  • No words after climax. In depth understanding about the life of women and their pains. Life is not at all tougher for a man than a woman. She struggles alot. We never notice it. Better you watch and think.
  • Director Gautham Ramachandran deserves all the praise for handling such emotionally absorbing & delicate subject matter with much grace & respectful manner from the very beginning. But the star of his twisted, hard hitting legal drama is Sai Pallavi on the titular role. She's a calm, determined & self-dependent woman who seeks justice for her father who is accused of rape of a 9 year old girl! Pallavi as Gargi owns every frame of the movie with a very realistic, compelling performance. Her pain, helplessness and desperation is the heart of this shockingly moving tale. This is definitely one of the finest performances by an Indian actress I have seen in recent years.

The supporting cast also did a tremendous job for conveying the impactful essence of this cinema. A special nod I'd like to give to Saravanan, the man who soulfully portrayed the father of the victim.
  • Very Engaging Mystery Legal Drama. Greatly written and directed by Gautham Ramachandran. Kept us under confusion till the end with unexpected twist. Slow paced interesting screenplay along with Govind Vasantha music made the film more powerful and wonderful. Career's best performance from Sai Pallavi and Kaali Venkat. Other artists have done their excellent work. Camera Work, Editing and all other technical works - First Class. Live locations, Realistic Scenes, Powerful Dialogues made us to connect to the Real Life. Standing Applause to the entire team of Gargi. Such a wonderful film with a good message to the society by taking the child abuse issue which was happening in daily life.

One of the Best Tamil Film of this year.

Must watch film in Theatres 👍
  • RATED 9/10 Language: Tamil Media Partner: Sony Liv Source: Nil RECOMMENDED

Simple and impactful drama. The story is very simple and the presentation is not distracted and deliver the content clearly. There is no thrilling investigation and goosebumping court room dialogs. But still it is solid court room drama with superb cast.

Sai Pallavi's best till date. Kali Venkat is choosing some nice characters now a days. The pre-interval Judge dialog and climax dialogs are the backbone of the movie. The biggest strength of the movie is that the director make sure that the audience get the impact and pain of the characters. Saravanan scene without dialog is the best example for Director's vision...The only negative is the screenplay is not crisp, lots of places it sagged more... Heavy drama with solid entertainment, not the documentary feeling. After Jai Bhim, 2D entertainment raised their bar with this movie.... Worth the watch and Must watch.
  • Story is perfectly carried by the director, hats off to the music director for keeping up the intensity of plot , & the twist in end was the perfect way to end this masterpiece.
  • It took me sometime to get invested into the film but once I started to, I didn't take my eyes off the screen. The film gets so interesting & starts to feel tightly packed with good suspense & drama when the courtroom scenes start. I wasn't boring till then either, Sai Pallavi just locks your eyes on her with her presence. She was so good in the role Gargi. The supporting cast did very well too.

The second half goes decent & the courtroom starts at the pre-interval which makes the first half decent. The second half is the most engaging part of the film. The suspense building was so good in some scenes. The thing which impressed me in the technical part was the sound mixing, especially in the climax. I personally felt that the climax was a little predictable but a good & impactful one.

I wouldn't say it is a milestone, but it is a very good film one can watch.
  • The degree & depth of Characterization !

    Well crafted story !

Thorough attention to detail in every scene !

Finding the right balance in screenplay & narration!

Actors who didn't just act but who brought the characters to life on screen!

Background score that complements the spirit of the movie !

In the end, the movie delivers a message right to the heart wrapped in an inspiring envelope called "Gargi"
  • Warning: Spoilers
Direction and other technical details are good. This story is a must-told one for today's audience. The screenplay could have been better. The writing had many red herrings, overlooking basic elements like drug dosage, unclear explanation that convicts are 'five' in number etc.,. A worthy urban investigation that fell into a compulsive twist factor, perhaps to meet 'hero-ine' status (just like Aramm ending or so). I'd compare the project to Manikandan's Kuttramey Thandanai for its simplicity and technical greatness.
  • IPyaarCinema1 September 2022
This movie seemed to go well and the writer, director thought to add up a masala element just to bring that OMG moment. A person who is completely family oriented and till the end living for his family, someone who supported his child when she was molested, randomly just rapes an already raped girl. Atleast once if the person was shown with something negative in him, the ending would have made sense.

Gargi is all about Sai Pallavi's performance in a movie based on a real incident happened few years back . This is my second SP movie for this week and both of them had great opportunities for SP to elevate her performance and to prove that she's here to rule the movie world . The earlier one being Viratta Parvam . In Gargi she has a very strong Screen Presence and a solid storyline to give the best of her career. Her performance also mattered a lot with the kind of brilliant support coming in from actors like Kaali Venkat who equally grabbed everyone's attention with his composed acting . Music by Govind Vasanth was undoubtedly a Soulful one. A movie with a simple storyline and limited dialogues gets so powerful and interesting with the music by GV. The screenplay and direction was as strong as the court case handled in the movie . The dialogues were neat and so was the cinematography. Like any other movie there were few misses here as well but Gargi just ensured complete focus on the goal ahead . Gautham Ramachandran had earlier directed a movie by name Richie and now Gargi . It's probably a pure coincidence that both his name and his movie name starts with letter G and R . Overall Gargi, Stupendous Performance (SP)
