The 90s has a not-entirely unearned reputation as a bit of a dead zone for television sci-fi outside of the USA – especially in the UK. However, the truth is that the 90s was actually something of a golden age. It’s just that in Britain, this golden age happened exclusively between 3:25 pm, when everyone got off school, and 5:30 pm, when everyone watched Neighbours. These homegrown and Australian shows ran the entire gamut of what science fiction could do, from hilarity to terror.
The budgets were low, the special effects had a short shelf life and most of them are now almost impossible to find outside of the memories of some nostalgic Millennials, but they introduced an entire generation to the sci-fi genre, as well as to some banging theme tunes.

As adults, we know that not everyone can be trusted. However, little kids, like Peter in the 2023 Lionsgate horror flick "Cobweb," should be able to trust their parents. Is the knocking sound young Peter hears in his bedroom real or in his imagination, as his mom keep telling him? Or are they perhaps lying to him and hiding a dangerous and terrifying secret? There's a line in the horror film "Silent Hill" that says, "Mother is God in the eyes of a child," so who can a child trust if they can't trust their parents?
The psychological thriller "Cobweb" comes to us from first-time feature director Samuel Bodin and writer Chris Thomas Devlin ("Texas Chainsaw Massacre"), and /Film's own William Bibbiani called it "one of the best horror movies of the year." You didn't know? You didn't see a poster or commercial anywhere for the film? That might be because...

“The Crown” cast’s 2021 sweep of the major drama acting Emmy categories will be hard for any show to ever replicate, but those who have inherited their regal roles are going to make a go of it this year. Judging by Gold Derby’s odds, the Netflix series’ best chance at a victory for its fifth season lies with Imelda Staunton, who is looking to continue the Emmy-winning trend in Best Drama Actress for her take on Queen Elizabeth II, just like Claire Foy (2018) and Olivia Colman (2021). Since voters responded well when the part first changed hands, it would make perfect sense for them to show the same love toward the show’s third and final headliner.
The penultimate season of “The Crown,” which originally streamed last November, covers a six-year period in the reign of the aforementioned queen and focuses on the challenges she faces as the third millennium approaches.

After the success of live-action adaptations of other Disney classics, including Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and Cinderella, The Little Mermaid is up next. Of course, this means more in-depth explorations of our favorite classic stories and fresh takes on them for today’s audience. The first version of The Little Mermaid came out in theaters in 1989, kicking off the Disney Renaissance.
After more than three decades have passed since the release of the original picture, obviously, some changes need to be made. One of these is the music that gave the film its iconic status. As it turns out, two songs from the original film will have updated lyrics. But this isn’t the first time Disney has made changes to their classic songs for remakes.

I have been tracking producer Sol Bondy since 2016 when co-production The Happiest Day in the Life of Ölli Mäki won the Un Certain Regard Grand Prize and the European Film Award for Best Debut. He and Fred Burle have been developing The Girl from Köln (aka Köln 75) with writer-director Ido Fluk, the filmmaker behind 2016 Tribeca selection The Ticket since 2019. "This project has been very close to our hearts in the last few years and we're very excited with the way it's been shaped so far," said Bondy, a Variety Producer to Watch in 2018. "It's been such a joy working with Ido on this exciting story and we're thrilled to have put an amazing team together," added Burle, Brazilian born producer who was just made a partner in One Two Films, alongside co-founders Sol Bondy and Christoph Lange. Burle joined One Two in January 2017, having graduated from the German Film and Television Academy (dffb) the previous year. He has previously worked as a film critic, at The Match Factory, and as curator of the inaugural dffb film festival. One Two Films has produced and co-produced award-winning films such as Holy Spider (Read my blog about it here), Vadim Perelman's Persian Lessons (Read my blog about it here), Jennifer Fox's Sundance breakout The Tale, Isabel Coixet's The Bookshop and Juho Kuosmanen's The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki.Other titles in the pipeline include Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurdsson's dark comedy Northern Comfort, which premieres in SXSW later this month, Annemarie Jacir's survival drama The Oblivion Theory, Sarah Arnold's debut feature Wild Encounters and Michiel ten Horn's romantic comedy Any Other Night. In Berlin this year it was announced that Bankside would be The Girl from Köln's international sales agent and was launching sales. Alamode Film already has German-speaking territories and is a coproducer, who have very recently secured funding through the Fff, the local fund in Bavaria. It is in early pre-production and will shoot this year in Poland and Germany. The Girl from Köln tells the little-known story of Vera Brandes, who, in 1975, at the age of 17, staged the famous Köln Concert by jazz musician Keith Jarrett, which became the top-selling jazz solo album of all time. With Polish Film Institute backing, Oscar-winning Polish producer Ewa Puszczynska (Ida, Cold War) of Extreme Emotions is co-producing along with Annegret Weitkämper-Krug of Germany's Gretchenfilm (Seneca). Oscar nominee and Emmy winner Oren Moverman (Love & Mercy, Bad Education) serves as executive producer. Moverman also produced Fluk's previous feature, The Ticket. The Tale writer-director Jennifer Fox also serves as executive producer. Stephen Kelliher and Sophie Green executive produce for Bankside. It stars Mala Emde (Skin Deep, And Tomorrow the Entire World) in the lead role, alongside John Magaro (Past Lives) as Jarrett. Magaro was also in Cannes last year with Kelly Reichardt's competition title Showing Up.Other cast attached include Alexander Scheer (Rabiye Kurnaz vs. George W. Bush), Ulrich Tukur (The Life of Others), Susanne Wolff (Sisi & I, Styx), Jördis Triebel (Dark), Jan Bülow (Lindenberg) and Marie-Lou Sellem (Tar, Exit Marrakesh). The NYU-graduate Fluk was dubbed "a talent to watch" by Variety following his feature debut Never Too Late, the first crowd-sourced Israeli film ever made. His American debut, the Tribeca competition selection, The Ticket, starred Dan Stevens and Malin Akerman. Upcoming projects include 24 Hours in June, a retelling of the final day in the life of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg who were convicted of spying on behalf of the Soviet Union, to be produced by Academy Award winner James Schamus (Brokeback Mountain) and Joe Pirro (Driveways). Fluk is repped by Amotz Zakai, Amy Schiffman, and Kegan Schell at Echo Lake Entertainment. He is also created the recently-announced HBO series Empty Mansions for Fremantle with director Joe Wright (Atonement, Darkest Hour) attached to direct the pilot. "From the moment I heard Vera's story, about how as a high school teenager she organized one of the greatest concerts in history, I knew her story had to be told," said Fluk. "We were immediately exhilarated by Vera Brandes' remarkable female empowerment story. Her strength, courage and sheer belief in herself and the music of Keith Jarrett will entertain and inspire audiences around the world," added Kelliher.

Lisa Loring, the actress who played Wednesday Addams in the classic TV adaptation of The Addams Family, has died. She was 64.
Loring died Saturday night at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank of complications from a stroke caused by high blood pressure, her daughter Vanessa Foumberg told The Hollywood Reporter.
“She went peacefully with both her daughters [Vanessa and Marianne] holding her hands,” she said.
Loring is best known for her turn as the morbid, pig-tailed Wednesday in ABC’s black comedy sitcom The Addams Family, a role she took on at six years old in 1964. She played the character for only two years, but set the template for live-action portrayals of Wednesday, and was recently praised as an inspiration for Jenna Ortega’s interpretation on the hit Netflix series Wednesday.

As an admirer of her work from Belle to Beyond the Lights to the “San Junipero” episode of Black Mirror, I look forward to eventually reviewing a new Gugu Mbatha-Raw television vehicle that doesn’t feel like a general waste of her incontestable charisma and dramatic depth.
It surely didn’t happen on Apple TV+’s The Morning Show, in which Mbatha-Raw was tremendous despite an offensively underwritten character. It didn’t happen with Disney+’s Loki, in which the underwriting was egregious, if not actually offensive. It didn’t happen with HBO Max’s The Girl Before, which at least offered Mbatha-Raw a substantive part, albeit one stuck in a padded and forgettable soapy thriller.

Everyone complains that there are too many awards shows these days.
Well, the 2022 Emmy Nominations show why spreading the wealth is not only a good thing but a necessity.
If you didn't know better, you'd think there are less than 25 programs on the air across all categories and mediums.
With over 550 shows to choose from, it's unreal that the categories are littered with multiple numbers of nominees from the same shows.

With Ted Lasso getting three nods in each of the supporting actor categories, well, that's just lazy.
How did What We Do In the Shadows garner a series nod, but not a single actor -- the people who bring the story to life -- got a nomination. It's bizarre.

Sienna Miller got a taste of what the Hitchcock Blonde experience might’ve been like when she portrayed Tippi Hedren in 2012’s HBO movie “The Girl” about the making of “The Birds” and the filmmaker’s torturous methods. Alfred Hitchcock notoriously held control over Hedren’s career with a seven-year contract, and reportedly made her life a living hell on the set of “The Birds” and “Marnie,” the only two films they did together after Hitch plucked her out of a Sego commercial.
While Miller said she’s never experienced any abuse in her career firsthand, she still found resonance in the role, as she said while reflecting on Hedren’s destructive relationship with her director, and how Hedren’s story might play out today, during a recent Montclair Film Festival Q&a.

Lionsgate announced it has acquired the North American rights to “Wander Darkly” starring Sienna Miller with plans for a fall release. A source close to the film has shared there are plans to mount an awards campaign for Miller for best actress, as well as other eligible categories including best original screenplay.
“Wander Darkly” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and tells the story of a couple, Adrienne (Miller) and Matteo (Diego Luna), who endure a traumatic accident. They are both left in a surreal state that brings them on a disorienting journey through the duality of their shared moments.
The film is an acting showcase for Miller following critically acclaimed performances in films like “American Sniper” and “American Woman.” Miller has received many accolades over her career including a Golden Globe nomination in 2012 for the mini-series “The Girl.” In the midst of what looks to be...

Women in Film, Los Angeles and The Black List announced the participants of the 2020 Feature Lab and Residency on Monday.
The program is an expansion of the organizations’ original writing lab, providing mentorship and career opportunities to seven emerging women screenwriters over the course of a year. This year’s intensive script and professional development sessions will initially take place in online sessions to adhere to social distancing regulations. Participants will have meetings and receive feedback from working feature writers, executives and industry leaders.
“I very much look forward to the year that doing two writing labs with Wif with only women participants makes no rational sense, because women represent at least 50 percent of the working screenwriters in film and at every level of television,” Black List founder Franklin Leonard said in a statement. “We clearly have a long way to go, and so until then are committed to our ongoing work with Wif,...

The allure of the post-apocalyptic world is one that cinema revisits frequently and Andrew Gilbert’s Edge of Extinction dives into this valiantly.
But despite its best efforts it falls short with a number of mis-steps.
This is a Britain but not quite as we know it, undoubtedly and you would believe is post-Brexit, set 15 years after World War III triggered by a nuclear attack on Turkey.
We see some signs of promise or perhaps at least what could be as the film opens to a lone man simply credited as “The Boy” (Luke Hobson) out in the middle of nowhere against a distinctive score that perfectly sets a tone of despair.
Director and writer, Andrew Gilbert, borrows from what has come before and is very reminiscent of 28 Days Later and captures a smidgen of the feeling at the beginning but this is where comparisons stop.

Look out, it’s an X-Ray Death Ray! We rushed this review out, and it’s only 104 years late. One of the feature films on a new disc devoted to an unheralded woman filmmaker is The Intrigue, a nascent science-fiction thriller of the ‘deadly invention’ variety. It’s all from 1916, when WW1 was being fought. Julia Crawford Ivers’ adept screenplay offers good espionage twists and Frank Lloyd’s direction incorporates some interesting visual effects. The show stays smart until a ‘pacifist finale’ that will elicit justified jeers from the hawkish among us.

Most Emmy pundits agree that Peter Dinklage is a shoo-in for another Emmy nomination for “Game of Thrones.” He’s the only actor who has ever won for the HBO fantasy series, and he has done it three times. But if he’s that beloved by the television academy, why aren’t more of us predicting him for his other role this season in the TV movie “My Dinner with Herve”?
Dinklage is the overwhelming favorite to win Best Drama Supporting Actor for playing conflicted royal advisor Tyrion Lannister. He’s backed by 15 out of the 16 Expert journalists we’ve polled thus far, 8 out of 9 Gold Derby Editors, and 21 of our Top 24 Users who got the highest scores predicting last year’s Emmy nominations. He previously won the prize in 2011, 2015 and 2018. If he’s nominated for the eighth time this year it will extend his record for the most bids in the category.

I have to admit, I consider Masaaki Yuasa one of the greatest anime directors of our time, one of the few who directs, continuously, titles that are addressed to adults and not children or teenagers, who seem to be the industry’s main target. Starting with “Mind Game” and “Kemonozume”, and continuing with “Ping Pong” and “Space Dandy,” I have cherished all of his works I have seen, and as it turns out, “Night Is Short, Walk on Girl” was no exception.

There are few things Hollywood loves more than a good revival. A familiar brand with a built-in fan base? Sold!
Even so, bringing back a recognizable property comes with risks. That’s a lesson illustrated last weekend at the box office. It was a tale of two reboots. Illumination and Universal’s “The Grinch,” the third adaptation of the classic Dr. Seuss Christmas tale, opened with a massive $66 million, but “The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” Sony’s sorta sequel to “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” faltered with an anemic $8 million.
Of course, it wasn’t exactly a battle of equals. One movie centers on a beloved character with a 60-year history, written by one of the most iconic and prolific children’s book authors. That kind of pedigree creates a prime opportunity for a studio hoping to cash in on a little nostalgia among families (especially around...

Chicago – There is nothing wrong with revisiting The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. That tattoo has made beaucoup bucks in book and film forms (both foreign language and Americanized versions), and Claire Foy taking over for Rooney Mara in the title role is seamless. So why the totally lackluster story? Is this a narrative source problem?
Rating: 2.5/5.0
The film, directed by Fede Alvarez (“Don’t Breathe”) is stylish and good looking, the performances are good and the production design works, but it devolves into style-over-substance confusion that meanders to a foregone conclusion. What began as a premise with a mysterious female computer sporting the titular tattoo – who also knows martial arts, weaponry and the chess game of staying one move ahead – has run out of steam as The Girl becomes a wrecking crew, who is invulnerable to being shot, drugged and generally beaten to a pulp. If you replaced Tom Hardy for Steve Martin in “All of Me,” and switched out Lily Tomlin for a wad of chewed-up black licorice, you’d have “Venom.” The difference being that “All of Me” is a charming screwball comedy, and “Venom” is the kind of comic-book movie that people who hate comic-book movies think that all comic-book movies are like.
Leaping from plot point to plot point without the hindrance of logic or characters, this big-screen return of the legendary Spider-Man nemesis — last seen in the franchise-hobbling “Spider-Man 3” — is aggressively loud and stupid without being much fun at all. It exists as a waste of time for some very talented actors, and it’s proof that even Marvel (whether it’s the studio or other films based on its imprint) doesn’t always get it right.

With the Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith earning his first-ever Emmy nomination for his portrayal of Prince Phillip in “The Crown,” its a good time to look back on the history of timelords at the Emmys. Is Smith the first Doctor to contend? Or is there there a long line of Emmy-winning Doctor Who players?
Well, that depends on which characters you classify as canon Doctors. We’ll get back to that later but, for now, let’s go through the standard Doctors from first to current.
Predict the Emmy winners now; change them until September 17
So, there you have it! Of the 13 usual Doctors, Smith is the first and only one to be nominated for an Emmy. However, we must point out that 12th Doctor, Capaldi, is an Oscar winner for Best Short Film (“Franz Kafka’s It’s a Wonderful Life”) – Emmy nomination or Oscar win? Hmmm. Toughie.

The pre-Broadway Beetlejuice has found its ghost and the teenager who summons him: Alex Brightman (School of Rock) will play the title character, and Sophia Anne Caruso, who knocked ’em dead with her rendition of “Life on Mars?” in the David Bowie Off-Broadway musical Lazarus, has been cast as Lydia.
The actors join the previously announced creative team – including director Alex Timbers and choreographer Connor Gallagher – for the pre-Broadway staging at the National Theatre in Washington D.C.
Performances in D.C. begin Sunday, October 14, with an official opening on Sunday, November 4.
The casting announcement was made today by producers Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures’ Mark Kaufman and Langley Park Productions’ Kevin McCormick. Additional casting will be announced shortly. Toby Jones is on this year’s Emmy ballot for his BAFTA-winning performance in the low-key comedy “Detectorists” as a would-be treasure hunter. Thanks to Acorn TV, the third and final season of this hit Britcom is eligible for Emmy consideration. The Us-based streaming service co-produced the last six episodes of this delightful slice-of-life created by “The Office” star Mackenzie Crook. He wrote and directed every episode and stars as the archaeologist Andy who spends his free time with his pal Lance (Toby Jones) in search of buried treasure.
Jones was delighted to have won his first BAFTA for a show so close to his heart. “This is just the most wonderful, chilled out job ever,” he readily admitted. And he loves that his career takes him from this intimate television project to the likes of the upcoming “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” in which he has a key role.

Like many of you out there, I consider one of the best remakes to be Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead starring Jane Levy. And thus I’m looking forward to an announcement about a possible Evil Dead II. But will that ever happen? Well, Alvarez was recently speaking with EW about his upcoming thriller The Girl in […]

The Night is Short, Walk On Girl is screening at Nippon Connection
The story revolves around two people, the Girl With Black Hair and Senpai. The latter is in love with the former, and he has been trying to ask her out for some time, with his place and time of choice being a wedding they both attend, which is also, where the story starts. The Girl, however,...

MaryAnn’s quick take… This sci-fi riff on the end of privacy is not as provocative as it would like to be, and its mystery completely falls apart in the end. But its visual worldbuilding is fascinating. I’m “biast” (pro): love Clive Owen; love some of what Andrew Niccol has done; big science fiction fan
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto) women’s participation in this film

In the not-too-distant future, privacy has been eliminated via neural implants that absolutely everyone has. Your “Mind’s Eye” records everything you see and hear and stores it in “the Ether” for you to revisit later or share with friends; the system also offers a kind of mega-augmented reality that layers pop-up IDs over everyone you see, as well as, naturally, advertising on many surfaces and shopping links...
