John Leguizamo has joined the cast of the upcoming Apple TV+ drama series “Firebug,” Variety has learned. In addition, Kari Skogland has boarded the series as director and executive producer.
Leguizamo joins previously announced cast members Taron Egerton and Jurnee Smollett in the series. It was originally greenlit in December 2022.
The series is loosely based on true events and also draws from events documented in truth.media’s “Firebug” podcast. The official logline states that the show “will follow a troubled detective and an enigmatic arson investigator (Egerton) as they pursue the trails of two serial arsonists.”
Leguizamo with play Esposito, described as “a former policeman with a lot of bad habits and a lot of good instincts.”
Leguizamo is a highly-versatile performer with a career spanning four decades. He is known for his roles in films like “To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar” (which earned him a Golden Globe nomination), “Romeo + Juliet,...

The Waltons was a beloved '70s drama that earned multiple awards and ran for 9 seasons, with the cast returning for made-for-tv movies. Richard Thomas played John-Boy until season 8, then Robert Wightman took over, leading to Emmy wins and Golden Globe nominations. Many actors from The Waltons, like Ralph Waite and Michael Learned, went on to have successful TV careers post-series.
The Waltons was a long-running drama series from the '70s with an ensemble that is now much older in the 21st century, and though there have been some deaths in the cast, many actors are still alive and active in the industry. The 1970s were filled with some influential and some forgettable series, and The Waltons falls firmly in the middle of the pack. That is by no means an indictment and the story of the rural Virginian family during the Great Depression and WWII era is a charming and warm tale,...

More than 1,000 Jewish creatives, executives and Hollywood professionals have signed an open letter denouncing Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest” Oscar speech.
The list of co-signees provided to Variety Monday morning covers a broad swath of the industry including actors, executives, creators (Amy Sherman-Palladino), directors, producers and representatives. About 500 more individuals have added their names to the nearly 500 who signed on when the open letter was first published.
The group’s statement says: “We refute our Jewishness being hijacked for the purpose of drawing a moral equivalence between a Nazi regime that sought to exterminate a race of people, and an Israeli nation that seeks to avert its own extermination.”
Glazer declined to comment.
With such high-profile co-signees as Jennifer Jason Leigh, “La La Land” producer Gary Gilbert and “The Americans” creators Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg, the statement adds, “The use of words like ‘occupation’ to describe an...

Patience is a virtue, especially if you're a sci-fi fan.
When it comes to genre TV, science fiction and sci-fi adjacent programs are often saved when unceremoniously dumped by a network.
Jericho, Lucifer, The Expanse, and Stargate Sg-1 all found new life after cancellation. Today, Snowpiercer joins that list.
AMC Networks announced today that it has acquired the exclusive U.S. linear and streaming rights to all four seasons of the post-apocalyptic drama series Snowpiercer.
The first three seasons of the critically acclaimed drama will stream on AMC+ later this year, leading up to the series’ season four premiere on AMC and AMC+ in early 2025.
This should come as excellent news for TV Fanatics, as the show always drove discussion and fueled passionate viewers with much to say.

Karen Pittman (The Morning Show) and The Wire alum Wood Harris are set as leads opposite Michael Cooper Jr. and Lovie Simone in Forever, Netflix’s upcoming drama series from Girlfriends and Being Mary Jane creator Mara Brock Akil.
A reimagining of Judy Blume’s influential — and controversial — 1975 novel Forever… for a new generation, the series adaptation tells the epic love story of two Black teens, Keisha Clark (Simone) and Justin Edwards (Cooper Jr.) exploring romance and their identities through the awkward journey of being each other’s firsts, set in Los Angeles, 2018.
Pittman plays Dawn, a college-educated, top executive in corporate finance with an easy elegance that belies her loving but paranoid form of parenting, Justin’s (Cooper Jr.) mother Dawn might be strict at times, but it’s always out of love. She’s worked hard to give him the things he needs to succeed in life and...

"The Americans" explores the dynamic of an arranged marriage between spies, offering a character-driven anchor amidst high-stakes missions. Similar shows like "Beef" and "Killing Eve" balance between intense stakes and lead characters' relationships. The leads in "Citadel" spend the first season connecting similarly to Jane and John.
Amazon's Mr. & Mrs. Smith had a successful debut and, for fans of the series, there are plenty of shows with a similar structure and themes. Mr. & Mrs. Smith follows two strangers, John and Jane, after they begin working as agents for a mysterious organization, developing a relationship along the way. The series is a loose remake of a film of the same name starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie as the titular characters, but Amazon's Mr. & Mrs. Smith differs from the 2005 film in a few unique ways.

Unsinkable: Titanic Untold focuses on the aftermath of the disaster, providing a unique perspective from the usual dramatizations. The film balances courtroom drama with disaster scenes well, creating a compelling narrative despite some weak performances and unnecessary characters. Strong attention to detail and period accuracy, plus a pertinent study of class difference, make Unsinkable a worthy watch.
Widely recognized as two of the most heart-wrenching movies revolving around a historical disaster, Roy Ward Baker’s A Night To Remember and James Cameron’s Titanic frame the unfortunate sinking of that massive ocean liner in ways that are simply unmatched. From the emotional display of English actor Kenneth More as Second Officer Charles Lightoller in the 1958 rendition to the plagued romance between Leonorda DiCaprio’s Jack and Kate Winslet’s Rose in the updated take almost 40 years later, the performances shown in these films held onto people’s emotional cores and never let go.

The intrigues of the Cold War inspired some of the most tantalizing films and television series. While some were fictional, others were based on true stories and events. Examples of such television shows at the height of the Cold War in the 1960s include Danger Man, The Man from U.N.C.L.E, and Mission: Impossible. More recently, we have had television series like FX’s The Americans as well as The Red Queen, The Optimists, Totems (which shuns the political class and tells the story of two ordinary people from two different sides of the divide falling in love), and Apple TV+'s For All Mankind, which are set in the same era. So influential was the Cold War that even Hollywood could not escape it.

The Americans is one of the best drama shows of the 21st century, and the perfect blend of espionage and familial drama. Beyond being an interesting examination of the Cold War in the 1980s and the impact of Ronald Reagan’s administration on the next wave of the “Red Scare,” the series deconstructed the inner workings of a marriage built on lies.

Donald Glover and Maya Erskine are the new Mr. & Mrs. Smith in Prime’s latest original series inspired by the 1996 series and 2005 film of the same name. Mr. & Mrs. Smith series takes a different approach from the movie, creating completely different narratives and tones. It is arguably better than the original film in several ways. The series shifts the premise and plot, with John and Jane being spies who work together from the beginning. They fall in love despite their initial intention to keep their marriage a facade. The show explores more serious themes and tones compared to the film. It focuses on the struggles and complexities of their relationship, portraying them as flawed and lonely individuals seeking connection.

Playing a long-married couple in Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Parker Posey and Wagner Moura are twinned forces of nature. They’re weird, they’re obnoxious, they’re so cheerful they’re borderline terrifying, and so obviously wild about each other they’re almost endearing. Whenever they’re onscreen, the entire show seems to sit up and hold its breath, eagerly aware that anything might happen in their presence.
Alas, they’re also guest stars. The couple actually at the center of the Prime Video comedy are the rather more sedate John (Donald Glover) and Jane (Maya Erskine). Mr. & Mrs. Smith has its delights, with a plot that sends the duo on glamorous top-secret missions to one picturesque location after another. But it’s all built on the wobbly foundation of a romance that’s more interesting in theory than in practice.

Even by the standards of a Hollywood ecosystem where everything is IP, and IP is everything, the idea of adapting a TV show from Mr. & Mrs. Smith seemed odd. Jason Reitman is staying mighty busy these days. Less than 24 hours after the release of the latest trailer for "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire," four major casting announcements were made for his next project, "SNL 1975." The film will attempt to tell the true story of what went on behind the scenes before the broadcast premiere of "Saturday Night Live" on NBC, highlighting the real-time bedlam with some of the most legendary names in American comedy. Reitman co-wrote the script with his "Ghostbusters" collaborator Gil Kenan and is basing the story on the firsthand accounts of those who were there. Lest we forget, Reitman's father is the legendary Ivan Reitman, so these comedy titans were the friends and colleagues of the family. If anyone can get serious insight, it's Reitman.

While many channels now have schedules that mostly consist of reruns, syndicated shows, and licensed movies, there is one that has maintained the quality that was achieved in the golden era of cable television -- FX.
It took a while for FX to hit its stride with original programming. Once it picked up comedies, including Archer and The League, along with the dramas Sons of Anarchy and The Americans, the channel was doing well. However, with the downfall of other similar channels, the future for FX was far from certain. Between the rise of streaming and Disney's purchase of FX's parent company, things looked pretty shaky for a moment, but thankfully, disaster has been averted.

If there’s one upcoming MCU project that has been talked about in recent times, it’s ‘Thunderbolts.’ In September Kevin Feige announced that David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, and Olga Kurylenko would be reprising their roles as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Ava Starr/Ghost, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, John Walker/U.S. Agent, and Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster, respectively, in the film. He also confirmed that Yelena Belova would be a part of the Thunderbolts team in the film.

Shiv Roy may have had to reach for her superior’s hand at the end of “Succession,” but Sarah Snook only extended her arm Monday night to receive her trophy. The Australian actor won the Primetime Emmy Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series, marking her first victory overall.
Previously, Snook had been nominated twice for playing the ruthless political consultant turned aspiring Waystar Royco CEO. Both nods came in the Supporting Actress category, but she — along with her onscreen sibling, Kieran Culkin — moved to the Lead categories for “Succession’s” final season.
Snook triumphed in a stacked category. Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) has 15 Emmy nominations throughout her career, and she’s won twice. Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”) is a four-time nominee who many consider long overdue for a win herself. This is Sharon Horgan’s first acting nomination at the Emmys, but she’s also nominated for writing this year,...

Among the highly anticipated upcoming MCU projects, ‘Thunderbolts’ has been a frequent topic of discussion. In September, Kevin Feige revealed the return of David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, and Olga Kurylenko in their respective roles for the film. Additionally, Yelena Belova was confirmed as part of the Thunderbolts team.
Rumors then circulated about Steven Yeun playing Sentry, which was later confirmed. However, Yeun recently withdrew from the role due to scheduling conflicts resulting from the recently concluded SAG-AFTRA strike. Now, according to Daniel Richtman, a reliable source, Austin Abrams is reportedly being considered for the role of Sentry.

Regardless, Abrams bears a striking resemblance to the comic-accurate Sentry, particularly in his pre-Golden Sentry serum days, during his less-than-ideal moments.

Soon after that rumors appeared that Steven Yeun would be playing Sentry in the movie, and the confirmation followed soon. Fans were not exactly ecstatic with that casting choice, citing obvious differences in how Steven Yeun looks and how comics accurate Sentry is supposed to look; even with a muscle suit and heavy use of CGI, it’s far-fetched at best and laughable at worst.

“Succession” stayed winning with its third Golden Globe Award for Best Drama Series on Sunday night, tying “The X-Files” and “Mad Men” for the most wins in the category. Since it’s over, it won’t have the chance to grab the solo record, but it did make Globe history in another way: It’s never lost the category.
The HBO hit, which earned a record-breaking nine nominations for its fourth and final season, was not nominated for Best Drama Series for its first season, only receiving one bid in supporting actor for Kieran Culkin. It promptly made up for that with an unbeaten tear, winning for Season 2 in 2020, Season 3 in 2022 and now Season 4.

Neither “The X-Files” nor “Mad Men” can boast a perfect record in the category as they both won three times from four nominations. However, they each were unbeaten at one point.

Over-the-top dramas often choose high-profile subjects like politics and criminal justice to stretch the boundaries of reality and introduce outlandish plots. Shows like Prison Break and 24 push the limits of what can happen within a given time-frame, introducing convoluted plot lines and improbable threats. Series like Alias and The Americans take the concept of spies undercover to the extreme, with complex webs of lies, betrayals, and shocking twists that become increasingly unrealistic.
Suspension of disbelief is a large part of what makes television enjoyable, but sometimes a show takes what could reasonably happen in the real world and pushes it to its limits. It's accepted that even if a series is supposed to take place in reality, it takes some dramatic liberties, but even a dedicated fan base may start to question how some of the plot points could be possible. Last year “Succession” broke the record for the most acting nominations in a single year at the Emmys with 14, and it tied that tally in its final season in 2023. Like last year there are three women from the show in the Best Drama Guest Actress category, one of whom is a perennial favorite and a previous winner for the HBO satirical drama: Cherry Jones for her role as Nan Pierce.

Premiering last summer, “The Bear” has become the most-watched comedy series in FX history. Season 1 amassed a total of 13 Emmy nominations, making it the third most-nominated comedy this year behind “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (14) and “Ted Lasso” (21). Included as part of their showcase is Jon Bernthal for Best Comedy Guest Actor for his performance as Michael “Mikey” Berzatto, his first Emmy bid after over 20 years working in the industry.
Like many actors, Bernthal’s first television appearance was in the “Law & Order” franchise on the spinoff “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” in 2002. After many appearances on a number of network dramas and sitcoms, he became known for his role as Shane Walsh in the first two seasons of “The Walking Dead,” and went on to work with such revered film directors as Martin Scorsese (“The Wolf of Wall Street”), Denis Villeneuve (“Sicario”) and Edgar Wright (“Baby Driver”). Keri Russell is pretty recognizable. From the college drama series "Felicity" to FX's spy thriller "The Americans," not to mention a small but key role in "Mission: Impossible III," general audiences know her face. However, fans may not have recognized her in "Star Wars: Episode IX -- The Rise of Skywalker," where she always wore a mask. Though we see her eyes for a bit, that's all we get. If you recall, her character, Zorii Bliss, encountered our Resistance heroes on the planet Kijimi, while they were looking for Babu Frik (Shirley Henderson) to get information from inside C-3Po (Anthony Daniels). Zorii has a past with Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), both romantically and as a fellow spice runner. Though she initially threatens them at blaster point, Zorii ends up helping the Resistance, even turning up with Babu Frik in the battle of Exegol.

Amblin TV has built its reputation over the past three decades as one of the industry’s busiest boutiques, producing scripted series across all major platforms that range from popcorn to prestige.
But in recent years, there’s been a new storytelling target for Amblin TV chiefs Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey, who have headed Steven Spielberg’s TV production banner (previously DreamWorks TV) for more than 20 years. Amblin TV has moved aggressively into documentary feature and docu-series arena. It’s a development motivated by business necessity but also the desire to add more colors and canvases to the overall Amblin TV palette.
This year, the company fielded a surprise hit with a nature documentary for Netflix, “Life on Our Planet,” which topped the streamers’ domestic viewing charts for multiple weeks after its release in late October. HBO's show Welcome to Derry will fix the timeline mistake of the It movies by setting it in the same era as Stephen King's novel, the 1960s. The new show will explore the origins of Pennywise and how he became a terrifying creature in the community of Derry. It creates a more authentic backdrop to King's original vision by capturing the cultural norms and shock factor of the 1950s, emphasizing the horrors of Pennywise's actions.
From the first glimpses of Welcome to Derry, the HBO show serving as a prequel to Andy Muschietti's two It movies, it looks like it will fix one major timeline mistake the movies make regarding the original Stephen King novel. The town of Derry, Maine will once again serve as the backdrop for this latest Pennywise story and will explore the origins of the clown-like figure and how he became a terrifying creature in the community.

Just over forty years ago, on November 20th, 1983, ABC aired the most influential TV movie ever made. The Day After, which starred Jason Robards, John Lithgow, JoBeth Williams and Steve Guttenberg, was a riveting dramatization of the aftermath of a nuclear war, focusing on the residents of a small town dealing with the most terrifying outcome of all – surviving. Along with other movies of the era, such as Testament and the UK’s Threads, it was seen as a cry for disarmament, as no one could ever possibly “win” a nuclear war.
This week, PBS is airing a documentary on the film called Television Event, and in it, they put forward the notion that the movie may have helped prevent a nuclear war. In it, director Nicholas Meyer (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan) relates the following intriguing anecdote (excerpted by THR):
“The movie may have indeed helped prevent a nuclear war.

When news first broke that a "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" reboot would be coming to Prime Video, fans of the 2005 action romance flick were understandably skeptical. Do we really need a new version of this married spy story? Could any other version live up to the steaminess of the original, with its pretty A-list stars, snappy plot, and real-life love story unfolding behind the scenes?
As we learn more about the new "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," it turns out we needn't be worried: this version clearly isn't aiming to reboot the original. Billed as a "reimagining," the new saga is poised to make a lot of key changes to the familiar premise, stretching the plot to fit a TV show and rewriting the spies as newlyweds in an arranged marriage who are aware of one another's secret agent status from the start. "Good night, John-Boy. Good night, Elizabeth. And good night, daddy. Good night, son. And good night, mama. Good night, Mary Ellen. Good night, Jim Bob." Even if you've never watched a single moment of the classic TV show "The Waltons," the impact the series has had on television continues on even to this day. With the series' roots stemming back all the way to one of the most hated episodes of "The Twilight Zone" in history, references to "The Waltons" have extended all the way to films like 2016's "The Nice Guys," where Matt Bomber's villainous Dr. Malek is given the code name "John Boy" as he shares a similar facial birthmark to John-Boy actor Richard Thomas.
Created by Earl Hamner Jr., "The Waltons" centered on the titular family in rural Virginia during the Great Depression and World War II, based on Hamner Jr.'s book "Spencer's Mountain." With a...

Bradley Cooper was supposed to team up with Fifty Shades of Grey star Jamie Dornan briefly for this 2015 drama. But it was a collaboration that never came to be.

In the same year audiences saw him star in Fifty Shades of Grey, Dornan almost appeared in one of Cooper’s quieter films. In 2015, The Star Is Born actor played a tormented chef looking for redemption in the drama Burnt. The feature boasted an ensemble cast that included Daniel Bruhl, Alicia Vikander, and Uma Thurman. Dornan was initially recruited to be a part of the ensemble.
