Girlfriends pulls out the stops for the first episode in this series, nearly an apotheosis of the missionary spirit of lesbian culture. Like 7th Day Adventists, these sexy actresses have taken it upon themselves to recruit new blood to the ways of Sappho, even if the newcomers are in fact old hands pretending for the camera.
The bloated running time of 209 minutes results from a painstaking, nearly spoon-feeding approach, making the arousing XXX video play at times like a sex education class or endless PSA. This occurs when expert conversationalist Zoey Holloway lectures her step-daughters, individually, on the birds and the bees - a very entertaining tongue-in-cheek bit of business.
Film gets off to a slightly cryptic but eyeopening start as step-sister Lily berates her mom Syren De Mer carrying on in horseplay with new sister Heather Starlet. Heather literally pees in her pants (we just see the result), quite a send-off for 3-1/2 hours of sensual porn.
Under the pretense of drying her off and warming up her body, Syren seduces the young girl in a 45-minute sequence that establishes the feature's slow but sure style of pacing.
After "A week later" card appears, Syren announce that she's breaking up with Heather's dad, blaming Heather for the split - a cryptic plot twist likely to be resolved in some future episode.
The divorce gives Lily yet another new step-mom Zoe, and her dad Paul is played by an uncredited actor in a non-sex role. He delivers hid dialog hesitantly and doesn't add much to the otherwise all-girl show.
There's enough exposition for a mainstream film at this point with several non-sex reels unspooling, all to establish that Lily's sexual development and knowledge have been arrested. Zoe takes it upon herself to educate the girl and Lily plays really dumb as the older woman explains all the ins & outs of sex, birth control and female anatomy..
Film takes a twist at this point, in that Zoey chats about her new offspring with BFF Veronica Avluv and the two MILFs have sex, in which a strap-on dildo features prominently. Having already explained the fine art of squirting to Lily, Zoey squirts - invisibly so we'll have to take her word for it.
Meanwhile, Lily has a crush on her teacher Raylene (I wonder what subject is that zaftig star's specialty?) and in bed solo the youngster fantasizes an idealized sex scene with Ray, very romantically staged.
Final vignette introduces new characters in the form of Prinzzess and Taylor Vixen, two superstars. The hook is them gossiping about Hayden (Lily's character). cuing their own curiosity about sexual exploration and an inevitable lesbian scene. Prinzzess feigning innocence ("my first time") strains credulity but likely give her fans a thrill.
Film's coda is set in a sex shop seen earlier when Zoey took her charge shopping. More foreshadowing is developed here, including Missy Martinez as a mysterious woman photographing the leads with her cell phone and Melissa Monet as a chatty cashier.
Each segment features big breasts, one of lesbian cinema's big draws along with the chance to escape from the cock-centric world that modern pornography has become. This mammoth introduction to the series is solid lesbian soap opera.
