  • Deranged is a recent (2012) horror/thriller/monster movie that's decent enough. For comparison's sake to recent similarly themed Korean movies; it's not near on the level of say The Host, but it's quite better than incredibly disappointing Sector 7.

    SPOILERS AHEAD!

Here's your story: A severely dehydrated and decomposed body washes up on shore somewhere in Korea. The medical examiners are a bit baffled at the cause of death, but alert the police that this isn't the first identical case they've seen. Soon enough, more dead bodies start arriving by the handful, then dozens, then hundreds, across the whole of Korea. Widespread panic sets in, and it quickly becomes clear that some type of deadly outbreak is underway.

With few clues at all, the authorities fortunately catch a break when they observe some of deaths occurring in real time on video cameras throughout the country. What they see appears to be people desperately trying to drown themselves as if they were possessed or on drugs. Another break in the case soon appears when one of the bodies is recovered before it can make it to a waterway to drown itself. What's inside the body are mutated parasitic worms that have latched on to the human nervous system in order to feed & reproduce.

The worms feed on the host, requiring massive amounts of water to stay hydrated, until they are fully grown. Once in the adult stage, they drive the host to the nearest body of water where they can escape in order to reproduce. Surgery is not an option, but at least the doctors and scientists can now study the parasites and try to find a way to kill them. They better find a solution quick though, because the epidemic is spinning out of control.

The pacing of the early half of this movie is really nicely done. The outbreak occurs suddenly and without explanation, and the tension is palpable as thousands of people are soon contaminated, and efforts to contain the problem are not working. Before long, infected people are everywhere, and their zombie like insistence to get to water is entertainingly portrayed. This part of the movie certainly gives you a "we're all screwed" impression that the end of the world is near.

Miraculously, there already exists a solution for the problem, in the form of a rather obscure over the counter drug that was recently discontinued. The general public races out to buy up the remaining supply off the shelves, while the government works to restart production as quickly as possible. The lone pharma company that makes the drug can't meet demand alone though, and being a dickish pharma company, they don't want to release the drug's formula because of the profits at stake.

The outbreak, the government's efforts in containing it, and the pharma company's involvement are all effectively portrayed. There's also some lingering concerns as to how and why this outbreak started, and why this otherwise unimportant drug is the cure all. It makes for an interesting case study that covers a wide range of the implications of modern medicine & science, corporate power & greed, etc.

Where this film fails to succeed is on a personal level. While the wider focus is on the overall problem at hand, there's also a separate focal point involving 2 brothers and their families affected by the epidemic. These personal stories are attempted to be interjected in similar manner as in The Host, to give you a family/personal connection to the overall monster/disaster story, but it's not very effective. Part of the problem is the actors and actresses don't seem to mesh together well, and worse, their interpersonal stories are not very well written for them. I simply did not care about the cop and the relationship with his estranged scientist wife because of the cursory nature of it. The other brother's efforts to save his family are undermined by a similar problem.

These stories are underwritten and seemed forced into the plot without much foresight. Either they should have devoted more effort developing these characters before and during the events, or they should have dedicated less time to them altogether. As it stood, it came off as a somewhat half-assed attempt to have you invest in some random characters as they reconnect with one another while under duress. Did not work!

Overall, this film's not bad for what it is. It works OK enough to slightly recommend, and it does so on a moderate budget for a horror/monster film.

Bottom Line: 6 or 7 stars or so. 6 stars it is.
  • "Deranged" is an ecological thriller from South Korea with a fair amount of action and a few drama elements as well. Fans of movies such as "The Host" or "Tidal Wave" will also enjoy this one.

The movie tells us the story of two brothers who don't talk to each other anymore since a tragic incident in the past. The intelligent Jae- Hyeok is a disgruntled sales executioner in a pharmaceutical company and has to do a few very degrading jobs to make his wife and two children live a modest live. His brother Jae-Pil is a cop with a bad reputation but a few good connections who is in a relationship with a doctor. When a mysterious disease breaks out in the country, the wife and children of Jae-Hyeok are among the one million infected people. The two brothers need to work together and reconcile and soon realize that the catastrophe has something to do with parasites living in water who nest in human bodies and end up killing them by drowning them or breaking out of their stomaches. As investigations progress, they realize that the infections didn't break out by pure coincidence and are about to discover a conspiracy. Meanwhile, the health of Jae-Hyeok's wife and children decreases and the two brothers desperately need to get their hands on an obscure and rare medicament that could save them.

This pandemic movie convinces with a very solid acting, a well done cinematography with a few well done but not overwhelming special effects and an entertaining pace. There really isn't much wrong with the movie but I thought that the little twist in this movie was too generic and predictable as one feels that one has seen this kind of story line a couple of times before in Hollywood. Towards the end, the two brothers run a little bit too much around to find the medicament and the concept gets just a little bit repetitive. Apart of that, a few more scenes could have been spend on the relationship between the two brother but the movie rather turns out to focus on the sometimes difficult relationship between the father and his wife and children that is very well done and touching.

Those who like pandemic thrillers and modern South Korean cinema should purchase this film and will be well entertained. It's nothing groundbreaking or new but the film is on the same high level as the Hollywood movies of the same kind inspired by the novels of Robin Cook, Michael Crichton or Stephen King for example.
  • Director Jeong-woo Park may not have an extensive bio, but he did a styling job with this environmental disaster film. The film provides a very in-depth explanation for the epidemic caused by horsehair worms, making it very believable. It was fast-paced and exciting with literally never a dull moment as the epidemic soon causes complete pandemonium. Towards the end, it is fantastic how everything goes wrong all at once and the characters become desperate, especially when a cure is announced and all hell breaks loose as they try to get their hands on the cure. The film became more intriguing as the truth unfolds as to how and why the epidemic started. This was incredible.

    Warning: Spoilers
Thousands of people have died and the company who has the cure is refusing to give it up for free. And the prime minister give them the money that they want because that's capitalism and you cannot give up on capitalism, because where would the world then wind up? Well, it would wind up in decency and those who want to profit from other people's misery deserve very slow and painful torture to death - that's plain for anyone who can think just a little. I guess this film is done a little with tongue in cheek. That those who would not give up the medicine for free are also those who spread the disease comes as no surprise because if you can do one bad thing then you can do the other. There's only one place for capitalists and that is jail together with all other thieves. Incidentally, it's a well known dilemma if you are allowed to steal in order to save lives and the answer is that it is no dilemma - the person who would not give up a cure for free is the person who not only steals from humanity but who also murders. That is why that everything that has to do with medicine has to be state owned and free for all people in society - only brainwashed Americans will not understand this.
  • I liked the idea and I could the plot itself kind of scary. It was overall well made I liked most of the crowd scenes but quite a few things just didn't make sense and none of the main characters are 'real' enough for the audience to really care for them. But overall it's creepy, filled with action and emotion and even though it's not really realistic overall there are some powerful scenes. I wouldn't say it's a must watch but it's entertaining regardless, if you just want to feel kind of creeped out or just see what a pandemic-like chaos would look like (not that you haven't...) this is definitely for you.
  • Epidemic movie from South Korea. Mutant parasitic worms, although normally use insects as hosts, they now begin to infect humans. As a result, they feed on the host until they are mature enough and then try to kill the host and get out to lay their eggs. Specifically they cause intense dehydration and thirst in the host until many hosts jump into the water until they drown. How did the mutant worms emerge and change their natural host from insects to humans? How does the only drug that can kill them come from a small local pharmaceutical company? Did something else happen after all? A very good story with a lot of suspense and interesting though predictable script and a very good result from Korean cinema that we are used to in excellent movies. Recommended as a nice movie in the specific topic of epidemics.

A disaster film with just the right touch of reality to ground the outre genre flourishes.

I liked the movie, it was a good choice for a hangover Sunday. It offers good pace, an interesting story and not too shabby acting. On the other hand, most of the plot is based on completely dumb decisions and questionable moral ideas (quarantine is a bad thing now? Governments in total crisis cannot force medical companies to produce the proper medication but have to pay them billions of dollars first?). Overall, don't think too much and enjoy the show.

As we can see Korea now try to wider their genre instead of just popular with their gangster-gore-cop movie as always. They had try courtroom, sport, war, social problem and many things so now they come up with ''Deranged'', their first pandemic movie maybe.

Maybe everyone will remember about ''Contagion'', yes they are the same genre but this is Korea, so they are totally different movie because all korean fans know what West don't have in their movie, only in Korea.

Distressful, thrilling, suspenseful, dramatic, thats what we need in the movie and Deranged have it all. Maybe it have a predictable solution but its so exciting and very worth watching. Especially for the ''race against time'' scene! Good try fella!

Interesting to see how life inspires filmmaking and even more fascinating how real it can get. Deranged (or contamination) looks and feels, esp in the light of today's pandemic, shockingly authentic and upmost real. The worm as such exists (minus the mutation of course) he also manipulates his host (insects usually)to go into water... pods, rivers etc. From this angle it's paints a creepy and convincing picture. The scenes, where hundreds of people go mental to access water in any shape or form might stick with you for a while. Also the aspects of Pharma industry's, stock exchange, money & greed which is actually the reason why all of this happened is not that much a big reveal or twist but more a human downfall. The acting I found ok, a bit melodramatic at times and some decisions or key scenes are just too well paced to be authentic, but this should not stop u to watch this movie which is better placed as thriller than horror.
  • This picture was frustrating to watch. The chasing-around/in-pursuit-of element stretched itself thin as any episode of Looney Tunes. No gore, no frights, nothing eerie or atmospheric. Just the live action equivalent of a cartoon rife with ridiculous anxiety. I gave this a 4 instead of a 1 because of the high production value and solid acting all around.

The core story, while outlandish, is interesting, but the execution of this film just left me exhausted. It lacked grace.

Avoid until you've run out of contagion films to watch.

South Korea has been cranking out some real gems lately. This, however, isn't one of them.

I like Asian movies and this one added to my list of favorites ones. Deranged has drama, horror, suspense everything blended nicely into 110 minutes. The acting is OK nothing spectacular but the story was strong.

Jae-hyuk is an ordinary man in his 40s. He works as a medical supplies salesman and is hassled by doctors all day. His brother Jae-pil is a detective that is not all that interested in public safety and spends most of his time moaning about the stock market. The discovery of a series of floating, gruesomely skeletal bodies around the country sparks hysteria.

I don't want to spoil something so the rest you will see it on your own. Give this a try and you wont regret it.

    My vote is 8/10

  • I wasn't expecting much from this Korean horror movie, but it turned out to be a little more entertaining. The movie starts comically with our protagonist Jaehyk who slaves on behalf of his failing pharmaceutical company and due to his bad choices the future looks bleak. We are introduced to his cute wife and two children for whom he no longer has much time or energy for. The horror aspect begins with people behaving abnormally and some ending up dead and floating in rivers. After that all hell breaks loose and Jaehyk has to start looking out for his family.

This movie is very similar to 2011 pandemic movie Contagion but with a lot more gore, much of the story dealing with how politicians and scientist deal with the disaster, posing a lot of dilemma decisions that has to be made. The other half is dealing with Jaehyk racing against time to save his family. I thought the acting and the chemistry of the family was superb and perhaps the main thing that saves this movie. But the plot seemed to me to be fresh and the pandemic is quite interesting. Unfortunately the movie doesn't seem to have the Hollywood budget and it shows, and it looks like a TV movie most of the time. There are not many movies that scare me and this certainly didn't but it was suspenseful with many race against time situations.

One thing that I absolutely hated about the movie is that they reveal what the pandemic is before even the half mark, after that it is pretty easy to predict why it is happening, even though the characters seem oblivious to it.

But despite its faults I can see a Hollywood remake happening, whether that's in your opinion good or bad. I actually think it would be nice, since I think one of the main downfalls of this movie is low budget.

Pros: Suspenseful, interesting pandemic, cute main actors, interesting difficult dilemma situations, deep moments, OK social commentary.

Cons: Too long, stupid main plot resolution, TV movie like, not scary.
  • They did a pretty good job on making this epidemic disaster movie. The movie does a pretty good job on using Nematomorpha that infect people causing them to die from drowning in water. It really shows how dangerous these parasites are in the movie by how it cause a lot of deaths in a city and random bodies showing up in body of waters. The movie itself is suspenseful and thrilling with the characters trying to figured out how to cure people and heal them back up. There's one medicine that work and the main character try to find it for his family. Unfortunately it gets pretty tedious with the medicine keep getting destroyed by current characters in the movie. But I do like the climax of the movie on how it was resolve.
  • In light and view of the Corona pandemic this was re-released (or released for the first time?) ... makes sense in a way but also doesn't. Because this is not even remotely comparable to the Covid insanity that went around the world. But you know, pandemic is pandemic, right? Well I'd say no, but let's leave it at that.

Also just enjoy this for the romp and hollywood style (with overdramatic plot points) take that it is ... cliche and predictability go hand in hand ... but the actors give it their all and the CGI works mostly (though for some it may be not even remotely convincing) ... the evil here is crazy though ... and I guess not as far fetched from reality as one may hope it would be ...
  • Warning: Spoilers
Overall movie was good but the scenes the actor trying to get the medicine were totally wrong. He could get the medicine many times but he did wrong things several times. I hate how they show the ways he missed his chances. These should be in better & meaningful scenes.
  • Do you enjoy watching south koreans scream at each other and behave irrationally? Then look no further, this is the movie for you.

Kinda silly plot and mediocre acting. There are better movies dealing with medical disasters.
  • Waay too much repeating drama, not enough suspense

Any chance there is a version that is English dubbed... looks great so far but im tired of reading.
