In a major shift for Oscar voting protocol, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that members will now be required to confirm they’ve watched all nominated films in a category before being allowed to vote in that race.

The initiative, aimed at strengthening the integrity and credibility of the awards process, combines digital tracking through the Academy Screening Room with member-reported viewings — building on a structure already familiar to Academy voters.

How It Works

Beginning with the 98th Academy Awards, ballots during the final voting phase will only unlock for members who have verified they’ve watched all nominated films in a given category. This requirement applies across all 24 competitive Oscar categories, from best picture and the acting races to costume design and the newly introduced award for casting.

Halle Bailey, Bernadette Peters, and Havana Rose Liu have signed on for Jesse‘s upcoming film, which will be produced by A24. Other stars in the project include Julianne Moore, Paul Giamatti, Bonnie Milligan, Colton Ryan, Lilli Cooper, and Maulik Pancholy.

The movie will tell the story of “[A] shy woman [Moore] who is unexpectedly cast in a community theater musical production, going to extremes as she loses herself in the role,” according to Variety.

Jesse wrote the the lyrics and music for the film, which started production this month.

This will be Jesse‘s follow-up project to the film A Real Pain, which he wrote and directed. Kieran Culkin won Best Supporting Actor for his role in the movie at the 2025 Oscars.

Andre turned it down, and Culkin ultimately tackled the role of the free-spirited but broken-hearted Benji, who is using the trip as a way to say goodbye to his beloved recently deceased grandmother.

In an interview on the “Whiskey Ginger” podcast released Friday, Eric André revealed writer-director-star Jesse Eisenberg offered him Kieran Culkin’s “A Real Pain” role two years ago, but he turned it down.

Per Variety, Armstrong's new film is officially titled Mountainhead and is set to premiere on Max on May 31.
