Led by “Captain America: Brave New World” (Disney), the conjunction of Valentine’s Day falling on Friday and the Presidents Day weekend boosted U.S./Canada grosses to by far the best in 2025 so far. With over half ($88.5 million) of the weekend’s box office draw going to the latest Marvel release, theaters took in around $156 million. That’s 50 percent better than any weekend so far this year.
That counts as double relief for theaters. The needed strong total raises year-to-date numbers to 22 percent ahead of last year so far, and it also comes with reaffirmation that Marvel remains vital.
With its B- Cinemascore, the worst for an MCU film, as well as mostly bad reviews, there was real concern the first of three franchise releases in 2025 might fall flat. How it holds remains to be seen, but despite the headwinds it seemed to face, its gross is at or above expectations.

“Conclave” won Best Film at the 2025 Ee BAFTA Film Awards, leading the pack with four BAFTAs overall. The British equivalent of the Oscars took place February 16 from the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in central London, honoring the best in film for its 78th annual edition.
Edward Berger’s “Conclave” led all films with 12 BAFTA nominations, and it won Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Best Adapted Screenplay for Peter Straughan, and Best Editing. It’s an upset after “Anora” swept all three of the DGAs, PGAs, and WGAs. The last film to win those three prizes, but not Best Picture at the Oscars was “Brokeback Mountain,” but then again, it did win the BAFTA for Best Film.

Ne Zha 2, the fantasy epic that’s been setting records in China, opened to $7.2 million on 660 screens, according to Comscore, for the no. 5 spot at a domestic box office being trounced by Captain America: Brave New World.
The animated film from Cmc Pictures, see Deadline review, takes up where the 2019 original left off as Demon Orb Ne Zha (voiced by Joseph) and Spirit Orb Aobing (Mo Han) must share a body for seven days as Ne Zha battles dragons to save his hometown, and a lot more. Written and directed by Yang Yu (known as Jiaozi), the cast also includes Jiaming Zhang and Deshun Wang. It set an all-time record box office record during the annual Lunar New Year holiday and has passed $1.5 billion in China alone, making it the second-biggest animated film in global box office history after Inside Out 2.

Disney/Marvel Studios’ “Captain America: Brave New World” is providing theaters with the early-year box office infusion that it hasn’t seen in a while, earning an estimated $88 million opening weekend from 4,105 theaters. With Presidents Day estimates included, that figure grows to $100 million over four days.
That is pushing the theatrical market to the best overall weekend it has seen in the first quarter since Presidents Day weekend in 2020, when “Sonic the Hedgehog” led totals to a $163.9 million 3-day, $182.9 million 4-day frame. Current industry estimates for this weekend stand at $155 million 3-day, $176 million 4-day.
But while short-term gains are assured, the longevity of “Captain America: Brave New World” is not. The film received mixed reviews from critics with a 51% Rotten Tomatoes score, and audiences have been as mixed with a B- on CinemaScore and an 80% Rt score.

Wicked, Conclave, and Nosferatu took top honors at the 29th Annual Art Directors Guild Awards (aka the Excellence in Production Design Awards) Saturday. Rachael Harris hosted the show from the InterContinental Ballroom in Los Angeles.
The Art Directors Guild divides its top film prizes into Period, Contemporary, and Fantasy Feature categories, which went to the Oscar-nominated production designers for Nosferatu, Conclave, and Wicked, respectively. Since the inception of these awards, the winner of one of those three has gone on to win the Best Art Direction/Production Design Oscar in 19 of the 28 years and 10 of the past 11 years. The three films will go up against Dune: Part Two and The Brutalist next month for the production design Academy Award, with Wicked considered not only the frontrunner but a heavily-favored one at that.
Nosferatu won top Period Feature over fellow nominees A Complete Unknown, The Brutalist, Gladiator II, and Saturday Night.

“Nosferatu” (Craig Lathrop), “Wicked” (Nathan Crowley), and “Conclave” (Suzie Davies) were the period, fantasy, and contemporary production design winners at the 29th annual Art Directors Guild Awards, held February 15 at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown.
Also winning for animation was “The Wild Robot”, following its Annies sweep and Ves prizes. On the TV side, “Shōgun,” “Squid Game,” “Fallout,” and “The Penguin” were the winners for their production designers in their respective categories.
The Lathrop win for “Nosferatu” was not surprising when you consider that “The Brutalist” production designer Judy Becker is not an Adg member. She has been the presumptive Oscar favorite for channeling Oscar-nominated Adrien Brody’s visionary architect, László Tóth, in applying a Brutalist style to the architectural designs of mid-century Pennsylvania with its bold shapes and function over form aesthetic.
Lathrop, who has worked on all of director Robert Eggers’ other films, received his first Oscar nomination for “Nosferatu.

After just two weeks in theaters, Ne Zha 2 is already a massive success. It kicked off its international release on Friday, and with the Presidents’ Day weekend, the movie is on track to pull in over $6 million.
So far, it has crushed expectations, becoming the biggest hit of 2025. The movie has even surpassed major milestones, and it’s not slowing down anytime soon.
By its 18th day, Ne Zha 2 had already made over $1.5 billion in China alone. This puts it in the history books as the second-highest-grossing animated film ever, just behind Inside Out 2 with a total of nearly $1.7 billion.
Along the way, it’s outdone Toy Story 3, Shrek 2, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and Frozen II. The movie has achieved this feat without even being released outside of China.
Now, Ne Zha 2 is racing toward a major milestone: it has already overtaken films like The Avengers,...

Maya Hawke is giving insight into a possible stipulation for actors when auditioning for roles and looking back on the harsh criticism she once received from a producer.
While sitting down for the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the Stranger Things star reflected on how “the line between actor and celebrity has gotten extremely blurry” in the age of social media and that some producers may cast someone based on their follower count.
“What I always wanted to be is an actor where the work is what the draw is, not the personhood. But the industry keeps changing, and you have to change with it and understand that all of these things are getting blurred,” she explained.
Though she noted that there are “wonderful, incredible actors” she admires and “whose personalities we all know very well,” many are left to just figure “out the footing in these changing times of social...

Don’t delete that Instagram just yet, actors.
“Stranger Things” and “Inside Out 2” star Maya Hawke says she has been talked out of leaving Instagram by “so many smart directors.” Because yes, social media is toxic, but a certain threshold of followers is what “can get [a] movie funded,” she said on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast.
She recalled thinking, “‘Well, I wanna make the movie…'”
Hawke says she has been told, “‘Just so you know, when I’m casting a movie with some producers, they hand me a sheet with the amount of collective followers I have to get [from] the cast that I cast. So if you delete your Instagram and I lose those followers, understand that these are the kinds of people that I have to cast around you.'”
“It’s a really confusing line to walk,” she acknowledged.
Hawke probably hits that “amount of collective followers” singlehandedly.

Disney/Marvel Studios’ “Captain America: Brave New World” is kicking off a critical 2025 for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, earning $12 million from Thursday previews.
For comparison, the last February Marvel film, “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” earned $17.5 million from Thursday previews en route to a $120.3 million 4-day opening. “Brave New World” has been projected by trackers for a 4-day opening of $90-95 million.
That would be a solid start for Anthony Mackie’s first theatrical lead role in the MCU, but the bigger question is whether “Brave New World” will succeed in drawing in non-hardcore fans or if it will suffer a big second weekend drop like “Quantumania.” The film has left critics lukewarm with a 52% Rotten Tomatoes score, while the early audience score is coming in at 81%.
Also opening this weekend is Sony/StudioCanal’s “Paddington in Peru,” which made $600,000 in Thursday previews. The third film in the “Paddington” series...

We got this one wrong last year, like many did, thinking that sentiment around The Boy and the Heron—namely, how it truly feels like a swan song for Miyazaki Hayao—wouldn’t be enough to tip the race in its favor. We figured that misgivings about Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse—which entered the race with Annie, PGA, and Ace trophies in hand—being a sequel were overblown or would be negated by, well, misgivings about The Boy and the Heron’s inscrutable wave of strangeness. Flash-forward a year and we’re looking at another nail-biter that’s leaving us feeling discombobulated from the echoes to last year’s race.
In one corner is The Wild Robot, which enters this race as our frontrunner, having been lavished with a boatload of trophies at the Annies, as well as the PGA’s animation prize. The critically acclaimed film is directed by Chris Sanders,...

Maya Hawke appeared on the latest episode of “Happy Sad Confused” and says a famous Hollywood talent once called her out for leaving her mouth open too much during takes. The “Stranger Things” favorite was advised that she would look prettier with our mouth shut.
“A director told me — actually, I think it was a producer, but they were in cahoots — told me I looked prettier with my mouth closed and that I should close my mouth after I speak more often,” Hawke revealed. “I do often let my mouth hang open depending on what character I’m playing, because I feel like jaw tension and mouth tension is so important to express what kind of person you are.”

In a category that is often filled with animated films geared toward children and families, “Memoir of a Snail” and its themes of depression and conversion therapy immediately stand out in this year’s Best Animated Feature category. But this isn’t the first time that director Adam Elliot has found himself at the Academy Awards, with his short “Harvie Krumpet” winning 21 years ago.
Elliot notes how the success of “Harvie Krumpet” helped get “Mary & Max” off the ground, which released to critical acclaim after its 2009 Sundance premiere. “Anora” director Sean Baker made headlines over the weekend with major wins at both the Directors and Producers guild awards, where he used his platforms to implore that fellow filmmakers demand 90-day windows for all theatrically released films.
However, IndieWire can report that in 2024, across 85 wide-release films, the average theatrical window was 32 days — a drop of more than 13 percent. In 2023, the average was 37 days (also across 85 films).
Across 2024’s top 10 films in the U.S./Canada, the in-theater average is higher: 46 days. However, in 2023 the average was 58 days. That 20 percent drop stemmed from “Oppenheimer” and “The Sound of Freedom,” which skewed the average with windows of over 100 days. In 2024, the longest theatrical window was 67 days, for both “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine” — the #1 and #2 films of the year.

Disney is adjusting its approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion (Dei) programs, placing more emphasis on business outcomes, according to an internal memo sent to employees this week. These updates reflect the pressure that companies like Disney are facing as they navigate evolving expectations in today’s business environment.
In the memo, Disney’s Chief Human Resources Officer, Sonia Coleman, outlined several key changes to the company’s Dei efforts:
Performance Factors: Starting this fiscal year, Disney is replacing the “Diversity & Inclusion” performance factor, which had been used to assess executive compensation, with a new “Talent Strategy” factor. This new strategy will still take elements from the old Dei focus, but it will place greater importance on how values contribute to business success. Rebranding Dei Efforts: Disney is getting rid of its controversial “Reimagine Tomorrow” initiative and its related website, which showcased talent and stories from underrepresented communities. The company...

Ne Zha 2 Box Office: 2nd Tuesday Update(Photo Credit – YouTube)
Ne Zha 2 is a box office juggernaut, and it is leaving behind Hollywood biggies with its astonishing collection. It has only been released for two weeks and is already in the top 5 highest-grossing animated releases ever. The way it earns it is guaranteed to surpass Inside Out 2 as the biggest animated feature ever, and that too by a large margin. However, at this rate, James Cameron’s Avatar also seems to be in danger. Keep scrolling for more.
According to reports, the Ne Zha sequel was made on a budget of $80 million only, which is even below the budget of The Super Mario Bros Movie. Cameron’s Avatar 1 and 2 are among the highest-grossing films of all time, and they both earned over $2 billion. The first film is at #1, the second one is at #3, and the #2 position has been occupied by Avengers: Endgame.

The effects of the Trump administration’s war on Dei are being felt at Disney. Disney is changing its overall strategy toward diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives as the federal government says it will investigate what it believes to be illegal practices by public companies. One of the first changes is coming to Disney+.
Disney+ regularly includes content warnings ahead of older, classic films in its library, including movies like “Dumbo,” “The Aristocats,” “Peter Pan,” and others. Those content warnings that pre-roll before the movie are being tweaked, arguably softened, an individual with knowledge of the changes told IndieWire. The language previously read that these films contain “negative depictions and/or mistreatment of peoples or cultures.” It will now read this: “This program is presented as originally created and may contain stereotypes or negative depictions.”

Two long-running studies published Tuesday reveal one place in America where gender parity grew in 2024: movie screens.
For the first time in the history of both studies, one conducted at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg Inclusion Initiative and one at San Diego State University’s Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film, top-grossing films with female leads were at least as common as top-grossing films with male leads.
The USC study found that, across the top 100 movies at the North American box office in 2024, more than half (54) featured a story that was centered on a female lead, including movies like Pixar’s Inside Out 2, led by Amy Poehler; Disney’s Moana 2, with Auliʻi Cravalho; Universal’s Wicked, with Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo; and Paramount’s A Quiet Place: Day One, starring Lupita Nyong’o. As you may have heard earlier today, representation for women on screen had a record year in 2024. For the first time, movies with female protagonists reached parity with male protagonists among the top 100 grossing films of the year.
Those were findings as reported in an annual study from Dr. Martha Lauzen at San Diego State University, but coincidentally, they were also similar findings as confirmed by a competing report by Dr. Stacy Smith at the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, also released today. The Annenberg report, titled “Inequality Across 1,800 Popular Films,” noted that 54 of the top grossing films of the year had a female lead or co-lead, up from just 30 in 2023.
Dr. Smith also analyzed the slates of individual studios and found that Universal Pictures featured the highest percentage (66.7 percent) of female-identified leads/co leads, followed by Warner Bros. Pictures (55.6 percent), and Lionsgate (54.5 percent). Sony Pictures fared the worst, as 38.5 percent...

Lead role gender equality in North America’s top-grossing films was reached for the first time in 2024, according to the latest research report from the University of Southern California’s Annenberg Inclusion Initiative (Aii).
According to the report, 54 of the top 100 films released theatrically in North America last year featured a girl or woman in a lead or co-lead role. That was up from only 30 of the top 100 in 2023 and 34 percentage points higher than the level for the first year tracked by the report, which examines 1,800 top-grossing films from 2007 to 2024.

Representation for women in leading or co-lead roles hit a record high in the top-grossing films of 2024, while opportunities for people of color took a sharp decline.
For the first time since Dr. Stacy L. Smith and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative began evaluating each year’s 100 top-grossing films, gender equality has been reached — with 54 films featuring a woman or girl in a lead or co-lead role.
According to the study, authored by Katherine L. Neff, Smith and Dr. Katherine Pieper, the percentage of girls and women as protagonists was at an all-time high (54%) — up from 30% in 2023 and more than double what was first reported in 2007 (20%). This figure not only reached but exceeded proportional representation with the U.S. population (50.4%).

IndieWire invited the directors of the five Oscar-nominated Best Animated Features to pick and analyze a pivotal scene that best represents their films: Chris Sanders (“The Wild Robot”), Gints Zilbalodis (“Flow”), Kelsey Mann (“Inside Out 2”), Nick Park and Merlin Crossingham (“Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl”), and Adam Elliot (“Memoir of a Snail”).
“The Wild Robot,” the Best Feature Annie winner, is the crowning achievement for writer-director Sanders. The dramatically compelling and visually arresting sci-fi adventure (adapted from Peter Brown’s illustrated book) finds robot Roz (Lupita Nyong’o) washed ashore on an uninhabited island, where she must adapt and survive among the animals. DreamWorks’ innovative handmade stylization takes Sanders back to his 2D roots with its tactile nature and watercolor backgrounds. The more time Roz spends in the wild, the more her surface changes with dents, scratches, mildew, and mold. She quickly becomes a hand-painted surface, blending in with the animals and the wilderness.

This year’s Academy Awards will mark the 23rd year there’s been a category for Best Animated Feature. The past winners have included a good mix of top earners (the first award went to Shrek!) and some more, shall we say, sophisticated choices. Indeed, last year, the prize went to Hayao Miyazaki, the grand master of Japanese animation, for The Boy and the Heron. Before that, Hollywood’s favorite kid-in-a-toy-store Guillermo del Toro won for his adaptation of Pinocchio. This year’s animation Academy Award is not as easy to predict as some other categories, but we’ve gone to the drawing board, and this is what we’ve sketched out.
Frontrunner: The Wild Robot
There’s plenty of evidence to suggest that The Wild Robot will be the one to take home the prize. For starters, have you seen it? It’s pretty damn cute. Lupita Nyong’o voices...

The victory came about an hour after its director, Sean Baker, won at the Directors Guild Awards two blocks away, and a little more than 24 hours after the film scored a surprise win for Best Picture at the Critics Choice Awards.
The Critics Choice/DGA/PGA trifecta took the Palme d’Or-winning tragicomedic indie from a film that didn’t seem to have much Oscar momentum to the closest thing to a frontrunner in this weird, unsettled season.
TheWrap ran into a dazed Baker in a corner of the lobby after his PGA win and commented, “Hell of a two days.” Baker smiled, shook his head and agreed. “Hell of a two days,” he said.

The Producers Guild of America had to delay the voting process and nominations announcement for its annual award show due to the Los Angeles wildfires, but the PGA Awards proceeded as planned tonight from the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles.
The guild award show, which is often seen as a barometer of the Best Picture race, is always watched closely by anyone looking to get a leg up on their Oscar ballots. And to anyone paying attention to the Oscar race, there was only one conclusion to draw from Saturday night: voters are high on “Anora.” Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or winner won the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures on the same night that Baker took the top prize at the DGA Awards.
TV was also well-represented, with Emmy favorites like “Shōgun,” “Hacks,” and “Baby Reindeer” taking the Drama, Comedy, and Limited Series categories,...

Drawing on his own life experiences and inspired by friends and acquaintances he’s met along the way, filmmaker Adam Elliot has landed himself an Academy Award nomination for his decidedly not kid-friendly stopmotion film Memoir of a Snail.
Nominated for Best Animated Feature, the pic explores the life of Australian girl Grace Pudel from childhood, where she is befriended by her eccentric neighbor Pinky, through her adult years. Grace fills her lonely life by hoarding all the snail-themed products and collectibles she can find.
“Grace is sort of an amalgamation of a lot of people and also myself,” Elliot said. “Primarily, she’s based on a very good friend of mine who was born with a cleft palate. As a little girl, she had a lot of operations on her mouth and was quite disfigured and, unfortunately, at school was bullied and teased. So she had a very, traumatic childhood.

Kelsey Mann is the director behind the year’s top-grossing movie, Inside Out 2. At $1.7 billion worldwide, his sequel to the Oscar-winning 2015 Pixar toon not only outgrossed that one to become the biggest Pixar hit of all time but won wide critical acclaim for taking to new heights of imagination and invention the concept of all these various emotions operating inside a young girl’s head, anxiety being chief among them.
Mann took the reins of this one from the original’s director and now-Pixar chief Pete Docter and made the most successful feature directorial debut of all time. During our interview, I asked what the Animated Feature nomination meant to him. “I was the guy [at Pixar] that was once printing out the Oscar ballots, you know, for everybody to kind of do their whole thing. And the fact that I’ve got a film on that ballot that I directed is incredible,...

The Inside Out franchise may not be finished just yet. Inside Out 2 director Kelsey Mann and producer Mark Nielsen recently talked about the film at the Critics’ Choice Awards, hinting that there’s plenty of potential for another sequel.
‘This world is so rich. You can go down so many roads,’ Nielsen told. ‘There are so many emotions to explore. There are further stages in Riley’s life. You never know.’ That sounds promising, but before you get too excited, he also admitted that there’s nothing officially in the works yet.
‘There’s nothing in progress right now,‘ he said. But with how well the last movie performed, a third film seems like an obvious next step.
Inside Out 2 smashed records when it hit theaters in 2024. It raked in an unbelievable $1.699 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing animated film of all time. Disney is known for following the money,...

“So unexpected, so unexpected,” said “Anora” director Sean Baker from the stage of the Critics Choice Awards in Santa Monica on Friday night.
Baker wasn’t alone in his surprise. His madcap comedy-drama-adventure took home the evening’s final award for Best Picture – without winning a single award anywhere else during the ceremony, losing in the six other categories in which it was nominated. Last year, “Oppenheimer” won eight total awards as part of its pre-Oscars Critics Choice sweep. In 2023, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” led with five wins.
Though “Anora” snagged the top prize, no film dominated in win totals. The award hauls were split between “Wicked,” “The Substance” and “Emilia Pérez” with three awards each and “Conclave,” “A Real Pain” and “Challengers” with two each.
Golden Globe winners Demi Moore (“The Substance”) and Adrien Brody (“The Brutalist”) scored the best lead acting awards, strengthening their Oscar prospects as...

According to three UK cinema chains, advance sales for the new Bridget Jones are tracking ahead of Barbie, Wicked and Paddington 3.
This is a sentence we weren’t expecting to type on a rainy Friday: Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy is outselling Barbie a week ahead of its release, according to three cinema chains talking to Screen UK.
As of yesterday morning, Odeon (the largest multiplex chain in the UK) had sold 70,000 tickets – ahead of Greta Gerwig’s £95.7m-grossing blockbuster a week ahead of release. Fellow multiplex goliath Vue said numbers were similarly tracking ahead of the pink phenomenon, while Curzon reported pre-sales were 20% ahead of Barbie as of this morning.
That doesn’t mean Bridget can uncork the champagne just yet: forecasts for UK and Ireland opening weekend box office are closer to the £8.1m achieved by Bridget Jones’s Baby in 2016 than Barbie’s £18.5m in 2023. According to Screen,...

Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld calls time on his Marvel work, as he opens up about the release of last summer’s Deadpool & Wolverine.
Banking well over $1bn at the global box office last year, Deadpool & Wolverine was one of a trio of films that finally turned Disney’s bumpy fortunes at the box office (Moana 2 and Inside Out 2 being the others). Champagne all round, then! Well, apart from for Rob Liefeld, the comic artist who created the character of Deadpool. He’s been discussing his dissatisfaction with how he was treated around the release of the film.
Chatting to both The Hollywood Reporter and his own Robservations podcast, Liefeld said that come the premiere of Deadpool & Wolverine in New York last year, he and his family were not invited to the afterparty. He also alleged that Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige didn’t acknowledge him...
