...Though the story and plot has it's missing parts. The story evolves around three friends:Sid, Jai and Omi. Sid falls in love with their neighbor girl Seema and Jai and Omi tries to get their friend back by telling him lies about this girl. So will Sid trust them or will he leave Seema? That is the what this movie is about. The big minus in this movie is Ali Zafar. Divyendu Sharma and Siddharth are just amazing in their roles. I thought this was like a "Gangster Crew" who pranks people and make jokes and that is exactly what Siddharth and Divyendu Sharma does. But Ali is just playing the nice guy who is the smartest at his class. I thought it would have been the opposite, that he actually was a member of the "Gangster Crew". But it wasn't and that is what leaves you disappointed and even if this is a remake of an older movie. They could have changed a bit in the plot. So Ali is a huge minus point. But at the meantime the unexpected other two are marvelous and brilliant. They save the movie with their pranks, jokes and one-liners. Rishi Kapoor is also funny and he shows a different look in this movie. Anupam Kher leaves you with a laugh every time he comes on the screen. Tapsee Pannu is decent and does a good job in the role of Ali Zafar's girlfriend Seema but her dialogue "Dum Hai Boss" can get annoying after the first few times. Overall it's worth the watch and you will enjoy it but in the meantime you will be disappointed with Ali Zafar's character.
  • Sir, is this your idea of remaking a film that you admire? Sir, you cannot just discard the film's soul, which had made it into a coveted entry in the library of Indian cinema, and just process the skin. Sai Pranjpe's Chashme Buddoor wasn't just a comedy, it was an ode to the vagaries of the city's lifestyle. It was a brilliant character study filled with memorable moments. Making your film "badder" (the cue in the title) to match the modern bad world, without backing it up with anything substantial, hardly counts.

The new Omi's rhymes fall flat compared to Rakesh Bedi's poetry. As stand-alone movie too, it fails to impress. Ram Gopal Varma made the same mistake with Aag, though your effort isn't horrendous like RGV's, it still comes across empty. Why attempt something if cannot raise or at least match the bar? Some shoes are hard to fill.

Now with the trend of remaking old films, after Sajid Khan remade Himmatwala and made it the worst film of 2013, David Dhawan did with Chashme Badhoor which is a remake of the same title film of 1981 which was a classic. David Dhawan borrows some incidents from that film and adds his own modern take which is welcome but here the gags barring some many times are overdone in DD style, we have many stupid scenes too, We have added characters like Rishi and Lilette Dubey's roles, the film does make you laugh but comparing it to the original is like comparing David Dhawan to Basu Chaterjee and Hrishikesh Mukherjee

Direction is okay Music is good, The hit song Har ek Friend is good while Dhiskyaon is funny rest are okay

Ali Zafar tries hard to underplay and is okay, Taapsee annoys with her Dumb hai boss repetitively, Divyendru is fab, last seen in Pyaar Ka Punchnama he proves he has talent, Siddharth tends to overact but does well in some scenes Anupam Kher does his usual hamming, Bharti Achrekar is okay, Rishi Kapoor is hilarious though his role is stupid, Lilette Dubey is tyepcast, rest are okay
  • this is the David dhawan superb comedy created with good numbers of shayari, dialogs and very good songs. The Chashme Baddoor remake comes as a pleasantly surprising tale from the house of Dhawans, abundant in humor and not slapstick buffoonery. Rendering a modern angle to the classic story, the film interestingly tugs at our nostalgic beads, remaining innovative making this one of the most remarkable romantic comedies of recent times. Hit the theatres armed with coke and popcorn, you wouldn't want to miss this one!David Dhawan easily surpasses the standards he had set for himself by giving the 1981 classic Chashme Baddoor an unusually quirky and unthinkable comic dimension.

    Warning: Spoilers
I have seen the old movie, old movie was having real comedy, real feelings, no overacting.

You guys have ruined the movie, no acting no sense of humour. Overacting ufff!! Very poor direction.
  • It's a remake of a classic Bollywood film, and in no way shape or form does it measure to that. But, I knew going into this one that I'm not going to get that because David Dhawan's directing this, and if you know his filmography even a little bit, you should know that this isn't going to be a natural, grounded, subtle rom-com. His USP is over-the-top, slapstick comedy and at times, I myself crave for some share of that dopamine which the genre provides.

The acting although nothing noteworthy is fun to watch at the very least. Ali Zafar is cute, Taapsee is cute (which is really hard for me to say since I have this image of her being the embodiment of female empowerment in every film), Divyendu Sharma is basically playing a totally opposite version of his character from Pyaar ka Punchnama but Siddharth was just annoying to say the least (he could've definitely toned it down a little bit).

The comedy is slapstick and at times, quite misogynistic but you can't really go into a film like this and not expect any amount of it because even though the film being released in 2013, follows old-school humour and thus, it was unavoidable. There are some moments which are pure laugh out loud whereas some just did not land. However, I will say that Anupam Kher is a legend. He is the least bit problematic in the film and he actually managed to get the most laughs out of me.

The songs are actually quite fun. Early Morning and Dhichkyaaon Doom Doom being the clear standouts with Har Ek Friend Kamina Hota Hai and Andha Ghoda Race Mein Dauda having a real whacky but fun vibe.

A nice, fun, time-pass for the weekend.
  • Cheap remake of a classic by Sai Paranjpe. Worst thing is David Dhawan couldnt pull it oof like Paranjpe did. Doesnt evendeserve 1 star.
  • Score 7/10 Director Mr. David Dhavan's work and approach towards an old story is good. There is nothing new in story but screenplay and dialogues make it entertaining. Screenplay by Renuka Kunzru is good. Dialogues by Farhad-Sajid is very good. Film slows down just after interval but very soon, it again picks up the pace. Punches in dialogues and the chemistry between all three male characters are enjoyable. Performance wise Siddharth as Jai is very good. Ali Zafer as Sid and Divyendu Sharma as Omi are fine. Tapsse Pannu as Seema is also good. Anupam Kher is fantastic as usual. Rishi Kapoor as Jhoseph is impressive. Lillete Dubey as Jhoshphine is good. Music by Sajid-Wajid is good and supports the film very well.

    1. Dull story. 2. Dull acting. 3. Cringe dialogues. 4. Irritating one liners.

Films don't work in this manner nowadays.

A remake of the 1981 cult-classic by the same name, 'Chashme Baddor' Directed by David Dhawan, is a Funny Film! It has several sequences that bring the house down along-with superb one-liners & fine performances working on its advantage.

'Chashme Baddoor' Synopsis: Three friends fall for the same girl. Complications follow!

The Original was a delightful clean-comedy, The Remake is loud & completely zany. David Dhawan creates a new world all together. Luckily, he succeeds by making you laugh at regular intervals. Renuka Kunzru's Screenplay is mad-cap but entertaining & humorous nonetheless. Sajid-Farhad's Dialogue offer some superb one-liners. Music by Sajid-Wajid is fabulous.

Performance-Wise: Ali Zafar is controlled, but Siddharth & Divyendu Sharma are loud & extremely funny. Taapsee Pannu looks super cute & has performed nicely. Rishi Kapoor & Lilette Dubey's Track has some sweet moments. Both the actors are first-rate. Anupam Kher, in 2 roles, is in his element. Ayaz Khan is adequate.

On the whole, 'Chashme Baddoor' has the humor & the craziness one expected from it.
  • watched CHASHME BADDOOR ...cause I haven't seen the older one of which it's a remake of, so I am gonna judge it as another film of 2013.... David Dhawan this guy has some sh!t load of money which he doesn't know how to spend so he made a movie(this)... he spent money on everything(to buy 2nd hand stuff n songs) except the plot & screenplay (these need creativity more than money) n r the sole of a movie...n this soul sucks also most(not all) of the cast members r dumb in acting(i should say overacting) n their overdone effort to be witty really annoys ...lets be straight... its a complete waste of time DO NOT WATCH THIS SH!T
  • CHASHME BADDOOR is a comedy/romantic movie directed by David Dhawan, starring Ali Zafar, Siddharth and Divyendu Sharma. This film is a remake of the 1981, CHASHME BUDDOOR, with the same storyline.

The film revolves around three guys, Omi(Divyendu Sharma), Jai(Siddharth) and Sid(Ali Zafar). Three of them are broke, living in a guesthouse, finding some way to not pay rent. A new girl moves in named, Seema (Tapsee Pannu) and Omi and Jai, being the usual, try to woo her but fail. They are surprised when Jai, the studious guy, manages to get her. And the rest of the movie shows what Omi and Jai try to do.

Now, I haven't seen the original Chashme Buddoor but I think its safe to say that when I exited the cinema, I had laughed way too much and I was upset as hell to acknowledge that the movie had ended. THIS MOVIE IS HILARIOUS... and pretty much ONE of the best movies of the year. Now don't get me wrong, there are much more sensible movies out there which have released in the 2013 cinema but David Dhawan has managed to make this movie shine. The story starts to fade halfway but you really don't seem to care because as long as the laughs keep coming, you are happy. Don't expect the world from this movie, but just expect a weak storyline and hell load of laughter.

The reason why I give this movie a 9 and not a 10 is due to the times I felt that the romance between two of the older characters isn't needed. I quite liked it, yet I felt it needed a bit of more excitement to it.

Performance wise, I felt that Divyendu Sharma and Siddharth were the best out of the three of them. Normally you would think that Ali Zafar would be the best, but in this film he had to play an innocent guy. He does his role extremely well but it doesn't balance with Divyendu and Siddharth's acting due to their slapstick characters. To be honest, Taapsee Pannu's acting wasn't very grand, and Rishi Kapoor's acting was finesse, as always. Anumpan Kher's acting was quite comical but quite better compared with his role in Kyaa Super Kool Hai Hum.

The replay value of this movie is quite high. I don't mind seeing the movie again in the cinema. It's worth the money and the second serving of popcorn!

The music is quite good. Songs like, "Har Ek Friend Kamina Hota Hai", "Early Morning", "Ishq Mohallah" and "Dichkyaon Doom Doom" were quite pleasant to listen to. Songs like, "Andha Ghoda Race Mein Dhoda" were quite mad yet funny when you watch it due to Siddharth's dance moves.

In the end, I will say that this movie is exactly what I said on the top, its Laughter at It's Best! There are songs that will mike you groove to the beat, jokes that will make you laugh out loud and one- liners coming at your way.

If you haven't seen this movie, I recommend it strongly, if you want a weak story and a hell load of jokes, with a lot of thought into it!
  • Everything in this movie is hilarious, and yes....please do not compare it with David Dhawan's few ventures offlate. This one is actually a fun ride.

Divyendu Sharma is the best in the lot, very natural n with great screen presence. Rishi Kapoor is proving his mettle with versatile roles at this age (wid movies like Do Dooni Chaar, Agneepath n Student of the year). The female lead reminded of Preity Zinta's early days.

The only disappointment is songs (absolutely non-lyrical and non- melodious)....and 'Ali Zafar'.....can someone please tell him to stop hamming and copying SRK?
  • With Bollywood not showing little mercy since 2013 beginning, I took extra courage and hopped in to watch David Dhawan's latest. Well, I am not impressed, but neither am I complaining.

Having read Karan Anshuman's review in Mumbai Mirror, I risked it. And whoa, the first half made me laugh. Well, isn't that a shocker nowadays? Siddharth acts buffoonish all over the film with his equivocal character. So is the character of Divyendu Sharma (PKPunchnama was appreciable), but his wit, sarcasm & shayris (short balladry) in short intervals puts him in the limelight. Together, they take a dig on many David Dhawan films, Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan & various other Bollywood related strong-points; they are both funny & clichéd. Ali Zafar is total let-down with his character emerging in the second half and still failing to take-off. Newcomer Tapsee Pannu follows every other newcomer and does quite well... what was told to her. But, she will need to put more dumm (power) into her chutzpah if she wishes to stay.

Supporting cast is elegant with Rishi K, Lillete D & Anupam K doing great enough to keep the movie going. Songs are powerful but the dialogs are not so happening. Editing is average while the screenplay just pushes it. The plot is simple but the edification is illogical. What could've been done rather easily, Chashme Baddoor lengthens it, but with panache to some extent. The second half is a juxtaposition of many hackneyed thoughts and compared to the first half (more of adult comedy lies here), is too boring & predictable.

BOTTOM LINE: You can risk it and have a couple of laughs to lounge this weekend because this year very few movies have come out which are worth watching, but I should remind you that this is tad adult and you may not want to take your family along. Overall, Dumm thoda kum hai boss! 5/10

Can be watched with a typical Indian family? Make a thought!

For starters, it's enjoyable if you don't make much sense of it.

Ali Zafar: He fits nicely into the goody two shoes role.

Divyendu and Siddhart: These guys are awesome. I mean AWESOME. Acted like pretentious and cheap creeps with ulterior and undignified motives behind everything. :p

The rest of the cast were well known veterans who did there jobs well.

It might not be the best movie or the best remake but it's rather enjoyable.

Tapsee Pannu: Her dialogs were really bad. I mean "Dum hain Boss", really? Even if you wish too make it humorous, which it is not, you should have got a better line for her. Acting wise, she was decent. Not great.

PS: Divyendu. Respect ++ \\Pyaar Ka Panchnama

It looks like 1980's back or film makers are now emphasizing more on yesteryear's hit movies. Last week it was Himmat Wala and this week it's Chashm-e-Buddoor. Without much delay, I will come straight to the point. David Dhawan was totally correct when he commented that new Chashm-e- Buddoor is an adaptation of 1981's Chashm-e-Buddoor. The newer version is dealt differently, thanks to David Dhawan's mastery in comic movies. The plot is same but the treatment is different. The older version had Farooq Shaikh, Rakesh Bedi, Ravi Basvani, Deepti Naval and Saeed Jaffery in pivotal roles and one could also see an unforgettable scene between Amitabh and Rekha. The latest version has Ali Zafar, Divyendu, Siddharth, Tapsee Pannu and Rishi Kapoor (respectively) in main leads. So, does this Chashm-e-Buddoor really deserve the wish of "Chashm-e- Buddoor"? Let's find it out!

The story is about 3 friends Siddharth (Ali), Omi (Divyendu) and Jai (Siddhart). Out of them, Omi and Jai are womanizing loafers who tries to flatter new neighborhood girl Seema (Tapsee) but fail drastically. Siddharth, however manages to impress the beauty and they fall for each other. Knowing about their love connection both the friends try to split their relationship by formulating comical ideas and then the story moves ahead.

As far as performances are concerned, Ali Zafar impresses with his decent dance moves and he looks adorable which was the most important ingredient of his character. Divyendu is as usual, though this is his second movie but he has all the guts to carry any comic movie on his shoulders. Siddharth is a revelation. He dances fastest and with effortless ease. As compared to how he performed in "RDB" and "Striker", this movie showcases his other abilities. Tapsee (a tollywood's renowned actress but bollywood's débutant) perfectly solidifies her character. Rishi Kapoor is a surprise package; it's hard to overshadow a performer like him. Watch him in "Early Morning" twisting his legs with Ali Zafar, I am sure everyone would have noticed him and only him when the both shared the screen – dance and comedy both are natural to the veteran. Anupamkher is first rate as the teacher and as an army officer he is too loud. Bharati Achrekar is adorable and gives many moments for good laugh – she is a veteran in comic roles too (watch Chambaili Ki Shadi and any episode of Shrimaan Shrimaty). Juhie Chawla appears in a cameo and is really nice to see her.

Songs (as in lyrics) and dialogues (Farhad-Sajid) of the newer version are actual saviors of the movie, music directors, singers and writers need applaud. The background score adopted from "Amar Akbar Anthony" will take those to actual 1980's era, who used to watch movies of that era. Some of the scenes which have been adapted from older version are:

A – Miss Chamko's Visit (though in older version it was sweeter and cute). B – Flashbacks C – Kidnapping D – The Shikaar connection (when Omi and Jai points out Seema, for the first time) For those who haven't watched original version of Chashm-e-Buddoor, I highly recommend them to watch that. It's a classic in itself. The character of Lallan Mian (Saeed Jaffery) has been modified in newer version as Uncle Joseph (Rishi Kapoor) but I still think a major softness has been missed out.

David Dhawan needs no gimmicks when it comes to comic movies; he has an astounding track record of blessing his audience with a kind of cinema that is both criticized by many but at the end of the day is loved by everyone no matter how decent the audience gets.

I rate this adaptation 7/10 - entertainment wise.
  • With memories of Deepti Naval and Farooq Shaikh, one enters the cinema all ready to be entertained with the modern version of Chashme Baddoor but surprisingly thats not the case… even with big names like David Dhawan and Ali Zafar, the film turns out to be just time-pass.

"Classics cannot be recreated", says Rakesh Bedi, from the cast of the classic Chashme Baddoor, but that was the challenge that David Dhawan took up and he knew what he was getting into…

Remaking a 1981 classic and that too thirty-two years later is an extremely difficult task. David Dhawan has directed this remake with a youthful touch and casted some amazing comic actors, the all-rounder and charming Ali Zafar, who plays the main lead while the side-kicks are funny man Divyendu Sharma and the talented Siddharth Narayan, while the female lead is played by a new actress Taapsee Pannu. The supporting cast boasts of big names like Rishi Kapoor and Lilette Dubey. Not to forget the special appearances by Juhi Chawla and Varun Dhawan.

The film starts with a good pace and is fun to watch with a punch here and there. Half an hour into the film and Taapsee Pannu's ordinary looks and average acting start boring you. Although one tries to satisfy himself/herself by concentrating on the exotic locations, the fine sets, the comic element and of course the naughty Ali Zafar, yet every time you see the female lead, your heart starts sinking.

The film's story is very much like the original except for a new love-angle created between Rishi Kapoor and Lilette Dubey, which is fun to watch and is rather cute. On the other hand, the editing is pacey but the screenplay does not has much to offer. The predictable story line steals the fun of the events and the only saviour is the music. Sonu Nigam's Har Ek Friend Kameena Hota Hai and Early Morning stand out while Ali Zafar's Dhichkyaaon Doom Doom is a fun song that one might hum even after the film ends.

David Dhawan's direction is good, overall the actors do a decent job, except for Taapsee Pannu, who is extremely unattractive and ordinary. One wishes throughout the film that the female lead was anybody else but Taapsee.

Therefore, beyond doubt, it is Rishi Kapoor and Ali Zafar's performance that saves the film and makes it watchable. A must watch for Ali Zafar fans.

Rating: 2 stars out of 5.
  • Warning: Spoilers
If you are expecting a comedy movie similar to something like "Hera Pheri" or "Munna Bhai MBBS" then get ready to be disappointed. The comedy seems staged and over the top. (As if they are trying too hard at it). You will cringe a lot during the movie because of some comic scenes. The story is not worth remembering or worth seeing another time.

I had a lot of expectations on this movie. It failed to impress me.

The only redeemable aspect of the movie is that the actors did well even with the worst dialogues. There were some very cheesy lines ("Dum hain boss!" -- whenever the actress said it, my hair stood on its ends and I had to cringe...Like WTF! Couldn't they come up with a better catchphrase!!-- Shame on the story writer and dialogue writer)

Overall I gave it 5 because I am a fan of Divyendu Sharma and Siddharth (Ali Zafar needs some more acting lessons). Watch it after switching off your brain. You "might" enjoy it.

Chashme Baddoor was one of the disappointing film which had good comic timings and hilarious moments but was saddened by weak direction and terrible script.

Sid , Jai and Omi are best buddies cum room-mates. Enters Neha, a chirpy, lovable neighbor who just moved into her uncle's house. Womanizers Jai and Omi try their luck to woo the girl but fails miserably. Surprisingly , she gets attracted to the third room-mate. Jai and Omi scheme up idea to split the love-birds so that they can avenge their failure.

Directed by veteran David Dhawan , Chashme Baddoor was one of the movie I was looking forward to see this year but was thoroughly disappointed with loud comedy , bothering songs and terrible screenplay. Direction wise David Dhawan is not in form. He chose to remake a classic but made it a complete waste. It is Divyendu Sharma and Siddarth who makes the movie fun-to-watch at times. They are top-rated and gives their best to keep you entertained.

Overall , It can be viewed once if you are looking for some entertainment. Best to avoid it. Average 2.5/5
  • Although the choice of the characters was at par with the performance especially from Jai & Omi, I still think the movie to be a good entertainer for the least. Needless to mention, Ali Zafar as usual was adorable. Worked on this momentum and timing a lot. The drop of experience to youngsters as Anupam Kher is a good idea. He did a superb job playing a double Sim. Hilarious. Jai & Omi and their famous 2 pathetic liners will definitely hit your laughter nerve at least once if not all the time. At times the movie got dull, thanks to poor direction and low value script, but despite all this performances were acceptable. No way can be compared with other comedy flicks but yeah for one time watch it may be a good idea.
  • Total Paisa Wasool Full to Comedy Movie The movie revolves around three friends Sid, Jai and Omi (Ali Zafar, Siddharth and Divyendu Sharma respectively), who live together in a small house in Goa. Living life large is their motto, but the only thing that doesn't seem to work for Omi and Jai is that no woman is interested in them. Sid, on the other hand, lives a normal life. The two womanizing slackers, Omi and Jai make an attempt to woo the new girl in their neighborhood, Seema (Taapsee Pannu). Soon, a series of lies, secrets and comical situations follows. The Film is start to end goes constantly in same line and didn't get down. Ali Zafar again prove that he is not just fantastic singer but he is very light hearted and very good to fit in this role. Divyendu Sharma is Surprise Package in this movie with his Dynamic Poetry. Sidharth Narayana is one of the most Brilliant actor and done a very good comedy. Tapasee Pennu Have Dynamic Entry in Bollywood. Her Cuteness and Smile Make movie very beautiful and good. Rishi Kapoor perform as usual brilliantly. David Dhawan done Again fantastic Direction and prove again He is best in Comedy. Music is also very light hearted. The different type of Music is really Appreciable from Sajid-Wajid. Dhichkyaaon Doom Doom,Early Morning,Har Ek Friend Kamina Hota Hai are bang on. The movie USP of movie is it doesn't feel Boring for second also. Overall a good light hearted Comedy Movie after long time which don't have big names in Main star cast. So Go to theater and watch it and Enjoy. Rating:3.8/5
  • Making a "GOOD" comedy movie isn't an easy task.....David Dhawan was going through a bad phase as almost all his previous movies were SMASHED by the critics......but "GONE ARE THE DAYS"....This time he surely delivers a "LAUGH RIOT"

Ali Zafar's choice of films proves to be SMART yet again.....He still lacks as an ACTOR but is improving and with the passage of time he is also blending quite well in the magical WORLD of BOLLYWOOD.....And that's really important!!!.....On the whole....His performance is DECENT!!!

GREAT GREAT GREAT performances by Divyendu Sharma and Siddharth Narayan!!!......You'll be BUSTING A GUT whenever they are in the frame!!! I simply LOVED them.......Wayyyyyyy to Go!!! *KUDOS*

Taapsee Pannu provides more than what one can expect from a DEBUTANT!!! Nice Job!!!

PUTTING AN END to a movie has always been a problem for BOLLYWOOD directors...And it seems to be a problem for David DHAWAN as well!!!.....Sajid-Wajid fails as the songs lack the required potential....Some scenes are dragged miserably!!!

Apart from these few issues......CHASHME BADDOOR is something that ought not be missed!!! Recommended!!!
  • Review : Chasme Baddoor

Making my way from one theater to another in search of tickets landed me up finally at at multiplex. With only a few people standing outside the box office, I was pretty assured to find a ticket for myself. I realized , the movie will only manage to earn from single screens, like every small budget movie does.

The movie begins with Omi played by Divyendu Sharma reciting couple of witty but lascivious poetry at the college function which manages to grab some applause from the audience before and behind the screen. Siddharth aka Jai is a wannabe actor and the college audition scene is one of the funniest scenes of the movie. Sid played by Ali Zafar is a physics student who is a nerd and often finds himself mashed up between the sporadic jests and petty fights between the rest two friends. Their lives take a U-turn when the three of them try to woo a girl who comes to stay nearby.

With excessive drollery and puns , the movie almost becomes predictable and hence by the end of the first part, things start to push you to boredom. The one liners are almost clichés and rip offs from text messages anagram-ed to give them a fresh feel. But fail at times. Divyendu Sharma certainly saves the movie. Siddharth's acting is disappointing , overshadowed by his drollery which will often remind you of Tushar Kapoor's characters in Comedy movies. The script and screenplay is subpar and at times edges senselessness.

This movie does manage to tickle your funny bones but good for only a one time watch with friends. If not for the sake of a good story or sort, at least you can share a good laugh with your friends at the puns and lewd gestures that the characters make on screen. After all, 'har ek friend Kamina hota hai.' 2 / 5 P.S. If you have watched the Classic Chasme Baddoor of the 80's, you'll be disappointed watching this remake.
  • First of all, let's get over with the remake status of this project which simply remains incomparable with the original Sai Pranjpe film released in 1981. And incomparable because the cult classic comedy still enjoys a truly exceptional status in every must watch list of Hindi Cinema today, even after more than three decades of its existence due to some worthy reasons. So I am simply not comparing the present version with its original in any form whatsoever for the same reasons.

Now taking it as an individual film, the present CHASHME BADDOOR largely works due to its 3 major merits as follows. One, it's a film which starts off with the young feel and duly maintains its light entertaining feel throughout till the end without any dull moments as such. Second, it has some enjoyable performances by the three protagonists who keep the laughter coming in through their well written dialogues delivered convincingly. And third is its gorgeous & vivacious leading lady who can easily be called our new age Preity Zinta, with a great infectious smile and screen presence.

It's a true remake as they call, since it uses the same storyline of its original with only a few changes which don't hamper the pace or feel of its basic structure. The veteran director David Dhawan very cleverly comes out of his own shell of some fixed patterns and delivers a film which takes no help from any childish sequences as seen in his earlier films and purely sticks to the logical, engaging scenes written around its key characters. Further it was indeed an intelligent move to add all the current net age elements into the script (including the sexual ones), quite graciously without going into the genre of a sex comedy as was being feared.

The film proves to be fine entertainer till the interval and one expects the graph to rise from here leading to an exciting culmination in the second half. But the narration drops a little post intermission and then gets back on the track soon mainly relying on some amusingly written dialogues serving as its big savior. Sadly as the things begin to impress again, we have the famous lovable sequence of "CHAMKO Washing Powder" falling flat completely and then the film simply ends on a hurried note without providing the much awaited crescendo in its climax (which could have been different). Cinematography & Art Direction brings in the desired colourful freshness in the project and the background score gels well with its comical theme written around love, jealousy and friendship. The songs sound energetic while you are watching them but as usual they remain the most unwanted feature of the film, fitted in all the wrong places deliberately, without any basic purpose. And they could have easily done with some lesser tracks in the film (apart from the famous original tracks used) to make it more short & sweet.

Coming to its performances, Ali Zafar scores well in the role of the most sophisticated one amongst the three college friends. Siddharth & Divyendu Sharma perform their over the top, loud roles in a fine way with Divyendu making the most out of his poetic verses. The debutant (in Hindi films),Taapsee Pannu is the main attraction of the film as stated before, looking great in her short dresses.Rishi Kapoor once again surprises you with all his body tattoos and a new trendy look reminding his good old image of a romantic lover, getting a brilliant support from Lillete Dubey playing his newly found love interest. On the other hand both Anupam Kher and Bharti Achrekar couldn't rise above the routine with Ayaz Khan having nothing to do in the script till the end.

In all, the new CHASHME BADDOOR works on the same spirit of its three decades old original and provides you an enjoyable time in the theater as promised. Its one of the better (if not great) works of director David Dhawan wherein he rediscovers himself working with the youngsters. And thankfully the film is not a patch on its basic source material like many of the recent remakes we have seen in this year.

Having said that, I do have a different viewpoint on this latest Bollywood craze of making remakes. And I have stated this earlier too in my reviews that a remake is unarguably a smart way to avoid all that hard-work and brainstorming required to work upon a new script. It obviously saves the time, energy and resources too if one can get an already hit script to start with as a fresh project. But if only remakes have to made as a safe proposal, then why not make the remakes of other regional language films appreciated in our own country (as Bollywood has been doing more often) or go in for the foreign languages films which cannot be seen or opted for by a common man, only exposed to watching Hindi Films as his fixed routine.

In other words, making a Hindi remake of an old Hindi Classic only, really looks like as if we are left with nothing more to serve to our thoughtful viewers other than giving them the same old dishes in a new plate. Ending on that questionable note, though CHASHME BADDOOR proves to be a largely fine entertainer as a remake, yet it cannot have all those mesmerizing key features of its original like the road side Paan Wala, the black motor-cycle referred to as Kaali Ghorhi, the Mandi House theater shows, Talkatora Garden, Tooty Fruity and many more due to the time period constraint. Still taking it positively, I hope Bollywood gets over with this avoidable trend soon (of making versions of their own Hindi masterpieces) and gives us some worth watching original works to cherish for long.
  • well movie is 'hilarious' but it is for young generation ...... Cashmere Bad door (2013)is a good watch especially for all youngster's and particularly people who want to get out of their depression phase.ALI Z AFAR acting is marvelous he has performed well in this movie. He could potentially hit a gold mine with David's Cashmere Bad door. This new film is deliberately raucous, garishly colorful, masterfully kitschy – has such a relentless supply of energy and silliness. The director has spread nothing else but 'Laughter' to the world with his entire Filmography. The master of Comedy David Dhawan comes back with a Bang i can summarize it like that: "it was a teenage watch but good fun"
