Shogun has skyrocketed to the top of the streaming ratings, a little over a month since its initial two-episode release, with millions of views in its first week.
This wasn't an easy feat considering the debut success of other FX or Hulu hard-hitters, such as The Bear, The Handmaid's Tale, and The Great.
Immediate comparisons to Game of Thrones were inevitable, given the show's heavy political intrigues set in 17th-century feudal Japan.
As with most popular debuts that delve heavily into cultures foreign to our own, some critics pointed to the white savior trope, drawing lines between Shogun and Dances with Wolves, The Last Samurai, and even Avatar.
Fortunately, those lines failed to meet reality.
The sympathetic, apologetic nature of the white savior plot doesn't stand up to scrutiny within Shogun's carefully constructed mimicry of real-life Japan in the 1600s.
The attention to detail is bar none, with creators...

Their first on-screen romance came in 2019 feature Top End Wedding, and now Miranda Tapsell and Gwilym Lee are getting in the loving mood for a Prime Video Australia series.
The pair are reprising their roles from the local box office hit in Top End Bub, with Tapsell and Top End Wedding co-writer Joshua Tyler penning the scripts. Christian van Vuuren and Shari Sebbens are directing.
Top End Bub will revisit Lauren (Tapsell), a dynamic Indigenous lawyer ticking off life goals in Adelaide, and her baker husband Ned (Lee), who abandon city life for the Top End (where the outback meets the tropics) to raise Lauren’s recently-orphaned eight-year-old niece.
While Lauren and Ned juggle the responsibility of becoming unexpected parents and try to keep their marriage together, Lauren must come to terms with her responsibilities within her culture, as she transforms from an individualist to the linchpin of her family,...

A mother pimping out her son? Not quite a story you hear every day, but historically accurate nonetheless.
Julianne Moore and Nicholas Galitzine lead limited series “Mary and George” as the titular Mary Villiers, Countess of Buckingham, and her son George, who together set out to seduce King James I (Tony Curran) and well, penetrate the throne.
While the trailer quickly was turned into viral GIFs courtesy of Galitzine and Curran’s steamy scenes, it’s Oscar winner Moore’s performance that has turned critics’ heads, according to reviews for the series. The Guardian called the series “magnificent” in part due to its “narrative rigor of ‘The Favourite,’ the disciplined panache of ‘The Great,’ just a dash of ‘The Tudors’’ excess and enough sex to keep ‘Bridgerton’ fans happy too.” Those risqué scenes range from queer group sex, royal orgies, and Moore’s “monster” of a mother who still serves...

Tony McNamara likes a challenge but when Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos first presented him with Alasdair Gray’s 1992 novel by Poor Things to adapt into a script, even the seasoned Australian writer admits he found the material daunting.
“When Yorgos first gave me the book, I read it and thought, ‘Oh, this is great – I’ve never adapted a book before’ and then I read it and thought, ‘Well, this should not be the book,” McNamara told an audience at Dublin’s Storyhouse festival. “I mean, it’s a book about a baby’s brain in a woman’s head – let’s not do this. But Yorgos and I had a great time working together on The Favourite and The Great and we clearly get along so eventually I said, ‘Alright, I’ll do it’ and I was up for the challenge.

Audiences love a bit of history. Kings, Queens, dates, battles, all of that stuff. And a big part of the fun in watching a historical drama is knowing that you are watching a version of events that have actually happened. Yes, there might not be any material evidence that J. Robert Oppenheimer’s wife was imagining him having sex with his mistress during his private security hearing, but enough of the other details are right that we don’t know for certain she didn’t.
We like learning about the small personal dramas behind the big events, and seeing how people lived and loved and worked in an age before laptops and phones. Audiences want to connect with something real. And if those historical dramas don’t get all of the details exactly right, then that’s fine too! Some people get annoyed at Neil DeGrasse Tyson-style pedantry, but...

Spider-Man fans are already gutted after seeing The Great Web succumbing to corporate affairs, the new video seemingly a pitch for the game adds salt to this injury. Everything was perfect from its gameplay to the potential revenue generation, but it wasn’t destined to see the light of day. The developers of the title, Insomniac Games, were all in, but Sony had different plans it seems.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is one of the best games of last year, with the incredible participation of Venom and the Symbiote. Insomniac Games also has one more project where this alien would have been very important: the cancelled title, Spider-Man: The Great Web.
The Spider-Man universe could have expanded even more with this multiplayer game that Insomniac Games cancelled. According to the leaks from the projects, symbiotes like Scream, Venom, or Carnage would have been part of the story of the game.

The last time an Emma Stone movie won the Best Costume Design Oscar, I ranked her character's many looks. So, it seems appropriate to do the same this year. Once, there was Cruella, but now, one has Poor Things' Bella Baxter to consider.
Breaking the trend of repeat winners and legendary designers finally getting their due, Holly Waddington is a relative newcomer to the costume design big leagues, even though she has worked with names like Sandy Powell and Jacqueline Durran during her tenure in Angels Costume House. Training her craft in that famed establishment, the designer specialized in period costuming, though she's hardly a stickler for historical accuracy. Bored by exact recreation, the artist prefers to play with anachronism, making her a perfect fit for Yorgos Lanthimos' cinema. Indeed, she met the director through Tony McNamara after she costumes The Great's pilot, another take on...

The Greek provocateur seemed to be smiling throughout Oscar night. In the past he’d delivered films with titles like Dogtooth and The Lobster, and his newest, Poor Things, was now stockpiling the statuary even as Hollywood’s filmmaking elite looked on, perplexed.
Yorgos Lanthimos’ code-busting Poor Things was winning not only successive awards (four in all) Sunday but also the exuberant applause from an audience that seemed to welcome change. Even chaotic change.
Oppenheimer won the big prize on Oscar night, of course, but Oscar voters once again demonstrated their support for the product of the filmmaking underclass. The Scorsese-Spielberg-Ridley Scott fraternity looked on while dark horses like Lanthimos, or, a year earlier, the Daniels (Kwan and Scheinert) from Everything Everywhere All at Once, stole the action. Coda from Sian Heder was the surprise of 2022.
Does all this reflect a restive mood? “The power of Poor Things stems...

PlayStation’s Spider-Man 2 has become one of the PS5’s best-selling games, and with good reason. Great story-telling, fast-paced action, and intuitive web-swinging made for an experience that is truly, well, amazing! So, when fans caught wind of a live-service Spider-Man game that got canned, they were both curious and disappointed.
With new information coming to light, that disappointment is going to grow even larger, as a pitch plan for Spider-Man: The Great Web reveals the devs had plans for several seasons that would have kept even the most ardent webheads occupied for years!

To date, only three programs throughout television history have swept the top seven Primetime Emmys categories for series, lead actor, lead actress, supporting actor, supporting actress, writing and directing. The lucky three are: miniseries “Angels in America” (2004), comedy series “Schitt’s Creek” (2020) and drama series “The Crown” (2021). At the upcoming 2024 Emmys, “The Bear” is hoping to join this esteemed list — and it’s all thanks to a savvy category switcheroo from one of its fan-fave stars.
Recently the FX dramedy about a Chicago beef restaurant claimed six of the top seven Primetime Emmys for its first season: comedy series, lead actor Jeremy Allen White as Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, supporting actor Ebon Moss-Bachrach as restaurant manager Richard “Richie” Jerimovich, supporting actress Ayo Edebiri as sous-chef Sydney Adamu, and both writing and directing for Christopher Storer. “The Bear” was not eligible in the lead actress category, so it couldn’t win there and complete the sweep.

The second time I saw "Doctor Strange" in a theater (I liked it enough to watch it more than once), I was seated next to a young boy. I vividly recall the scene where Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) crashes his car on a mountain road and violently flips over several times before landing in a body of water below. There was a brief pause, at which point the boy next to me said (loud enough for me to hear), "I sure wouldn't want that to happen to my Lamborghini!"
Kids sure do say the darndest things. They can also be somewhat sociopathic. It's not because they're all secretly the Antichrist in disguise (although it happens more often than you'd think), it's because they simply don't know any better. This can make things particularly awkward when they're potty training or discover that their genitals have multiple uses, like Bella Baxter (Emma Stone) in "Poor Things.

The 34-year-old British actor Nicholas Hoult kicked off production last week on Warner Bros. The star of “About a Boy,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” and Hulu series “The Great” recently went on Michael Rosenbaum’s “Inside of You” podcast and talked a bit about preparing for the role of the evil mastermind Lex Luthor.
First, he complimented his new boss Gunn for making the audition process fun. He said he enjoyed the “Guardians of the Galaxy” auteur’s method of “try[ing] things in the moment, just shouting out from the monitors, ‘Say this line. Do this! Do that!’”
Then he added that even though Luthor is better known for his brains rather than his brawn, Hoult has been hitting the weights. “There’s that bit in ‘All-Star Superman’ [the Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely...

Nominated for eleven Oscars including Best Motion Picture of the Year, director Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things is now available for Digital rental and purchase at home. You can expect the Blu-ray release on March 12, and we’ve learned the film is also headed to Hulu.
Poor Things will begin streaming on Hulu Thursday, March 7, just a few days before we find out how many Academy Awards the Emma Stone-starring film takes home.
This year’s Oscars ceremony airs on Sunday, March 10.
At the box office, the awards recognition and positive word of mouth drove Poor Things to an incredible $100 million worldwide, a huge success story for arthouse cinema at large.
Emma Stone stars alongside Willem Dafoe in Poor Things from Yorgos Lanthimos (The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Dogtooth), a Frankenstein-like tale based on the 1992 novel by Alasdair Gray. Ramy Youssef, Jerrod Carmichael, Christopher Abbott, and Mark Ruffalo also star.

Costume Designers Guild Awards: ‘Barbie’, ‘Poor Things’ & ‘Saltburn’ Take Film Prizes – Winners List
Barbie, Poor Things and Saltburn took the top film prizes at the 26th Costume Designers Guild Awards, which were handed out tonight at NeueHouse in Hollywood.
Poor Things costume designer Holly Waddingham won for Period Film, and Saltburn‘s Sophie Canale took Contemporary Film. The night’s first film prize went to last year’s biggest film, with Jacqueline Durran winning for Barbie.
Waddingham and Durran also are up for the Best Costume Design Oscar, vying against Killers of the Flower Moon, Napoleon and Oppenheimer.
Since the guild launched its awards show in 1999, the Academy Award for Costume Design has gone to a period film every year but thrice, with only Mad Max: Fury Road (2016), Black Panther (2019), and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2023) bucking the trend.
The 2023 Cdga saw Elvis, eventual Oscar-winner Everything Everywhere All at Once, and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery take the top film awards. But Ruth E. Carter...

While film awards have mostly been steady as they go, despite the WGA and SAG strikes last year, the TV awards timeline has been tied in absolute knots to the point where one deserves an award for even being able to guess which season of a show is in contention.
Normally, an announcement like the 2024 WGA Awards nominations would let us know what new shows are likely to become the next class of Emmy contenders. This year, what sticks out more are the nominees whose awards runs are still chugging along a year after their premieres. All the nominees in the New Series category — “The Diplomat,” “Jury Duty,” “The Last of Us,” “Poker Face,” and “Shrinking” — are for TV seasons that have already just finished their Emmy runs. Because the WGA Awards go by calendar year, rather than the traditional TV schedule, their nominations create one more awards stop on...
