How and where to begin for this movie, Wel....l this movie is not for the people those who like a masala flick which is having fight sequences and peppy numbers .... this movie is also having all the elements in the first half and not in the second half because of the needed narration for the story....Its very new to Tamil industry the story is fresh , many people may think that this is not possible , but we have to accept such bitter truths that this is much possible in the near future, as well as many people say that this second half of the movie is boring, i don't accept it, because i enjoyed the whole movie for the essence of the story.. sometimes its predictable, some minuses also there but i don't want to point out the minuses because its app laudable effort from the whole team

ratheesh-sahayaraj15 October 2012First of all i was frustrated with this year's biggies all flopping down........but i had some hope on Maattrraan due to KV Anand.....But he too proved that a good story and an excellent actor like Surya are not enough to make a movie a grand success.
Surya has performed well especially in the sentiment scenes.Kajal is also offered much scope in the movie.
The movie is pretty enjoyable in the first half but many illogical scenes and poor screenplay in second half make it pretty awkward and a senseless climax kills the movie.Many scenes resemble 7am Arivu.
Overall this movie could have been done better if there was a much better screenplay -

First half of the movie is engaging and funny with good acting from Surya twins and kajal agarwal. Second half is very lengthy and not interesting as of the first half. Second half fully deals with science and many scenes are not digestible to ordinary men. Fight scenes are just meant for tamil fans and is hard to digest for others.The climax is lengthy and is boring. Climax should have been made better for its long run in theaters. The funny thing in the movie is that Suriya twins are Vijay fans. Performance from Suriya is good and that of Kajal Agarwal is excellent. Other crew had also done well. Overall the movie should have been made better. For me, its the first 'not hit' movie from K.V Anand who had done all his movies brilliantly. Songs are good and matches the situations. The movie is average and its a return for Suriya from the clouds of success back to earth.

ritheshk55520 October 2012Well, this was a film which was expected in south of India most this year because of the crew and the entertainment that it gave with the last film.KV Anand's mind twisting story, Surya's hard work, Harris's songs in the last film was perfectly mixed and screen played which gave an truly seat cornering film the before time and for the next film with the same crew, everyone expected more for their value in money. Hence all like other's I also went to the movie with high expectations and from the starting, a two way plot went up. One, the comedy and usual romance scenes with the actor and an another with a very serious mysterious killings. Nearing to the end of the first half, another twist stating that one of the conjoined twins died and with the intermission everyone went to the coffee with the confused mind that what would happen after this like in the previous film. In the second half, the plot was very strong and it happened to take us to a new country with a very twisting story and we was given that the father of the twins was the antagonist and he is the master mind behind all the work and Surya killing him by leaving him alone in the dark cave surrounded by rats. This ending wasn't a usual Tamil film ending but this was a different one but the climax forgot to complete the film fully and all were left out of the Theatre confused with some incompleteness of the film.
Let's see the positive's. KV Anand drove us to a world where a complete selfish man to become the most powerful and wealthy man and to stop his dreams, his twins stand in his way. Amazing cinematography with S.Sounder Rajan and Kajal's work as the translator's doesn't keep her role out of the film and Surya, as always performed quiet neatly for what he signed for. But this wasn't enough.
The negative's. The first half was a two way fast pace and the second half was somewhat bored with the lack of Humour which died with the death of one of the twins. Only story was given it's importance leaving other departments, the less one and hence it resulted in an unusual way at the end. the use of rocket launcher to stop Surya's car and the escape of only the hero,heroine and the military officer with bullet missing in a close range led us to the days of the old Tamil films.
Overall, Maattrraan had a high expectation and a superb twisted story and but the lack of screenplay and Humour in some parts has the film led to a mixed reviews. -

Watched the movie on first day release itself with my friends.
First half is somewhat OK(not that much good). Ques: Coming to the question why first half OK ? Ans : Only because of conjoin surya's timing dialogues, fun things they make was OK.
Second half: As like "Ko" film second half started with a dull song, through out second half can remain some shots in "Ayan", being researching about genetics blah..blah... everyone in theatre was crying. Such a worst move in second half. Unwanted fight sequence with rocket launcher n all. Finally climax with "Anniyan" film copy punishment"Andhakoobam", which is also a unwanted one. Got headache while coming out of theatre.
Hope director was over-confident with his script, being casting surya film will move success. 100% its a flop movie. Great disappointment for all surya fans. -

About 1st half: Surya was so cool to see in conjoined twins character.Surya carries his role with ease..His hard work was visible in every frame..the way how they lead day-to-day life even how they get dressed was so detailed..Kajal was so gorgeous ..that Russian spy role was not predictable at-all..Three songs-"Rettai Kathiray","Theeye Theeye","Nani Koni" all are nice..upon my rating : 4.5/5 About 2nd half: after the death of Vimal,the heart transplantation was so realistic..And Akil longing for his brother's death brings out tears..Even though it was crystal clear that their father is the villain,the screenplay was so thrilling and it will tempt us what will happen next..That athletic phenomenon was so shocking.. k.v Anandh has done a lot of research..Handsoff to him..climax is bit lengthy could have been trimmed..Two songs-"Yaro Yaro","Kaal Mulaitha Poovey" both are nice..
upon my rating :3.5/5 totally :4.5+3.5= 8 + 1(for Surya's performance) = 9/10....... -
krits-v13 October 2012When a galaxy of film stars come together you expect their collective brilliance to awe you and floor you. Maattrraan had big shoes to fill with an interesting plot, K.V. Anand as a director, Surya in the lead role and Harris Jayaraj as the composer.
The film is about how desperation & frustration drive a genius genetic scientist to become callous and commit horrendous crimes. It takes us through some potentially powerful & intense emotions & moral dilemmas. It portrays the pain of a child as he ascends the moral high ground after dragging his own father to the grave in order to save millions of lives. Science and morality make for a captivating backdrop but the scenes just fall flat as the director founders in translating the script to on- screen magic. Harris' alleged experiment with different styles of music have been made in the safe confines of his comfort zone and fail to impress.
Like a diamond in the rough, Maattrraan will be remembered for what it could have been but never was. The movie miserably fails to deliver the goods and I cannot recollect a more regretful waste of time in my life! -

The emotions, the contrast characters of the conjoined . their life , their movements and every single thing involving them could not be shown any better by the director KV Anand sir , the director imprints himself in everyone's heart
the action sequences- There is an action sequence involving both the Surya(s) that u can never forget , I would all the action sequences on the whole but this should definitely be mentioned ..
the performance capture - It is somewhat obvious at " some places " only if you look very closely , its the first to be used in India , though it is not a full fledged mo cap film..
The songs - all the songs are " unique " and the songs are so stuck to the screenplay and the content of the movie , you will never get the " off track " feel , should mention rettai kadirae ( growth of the brothers ) , theeyae theeyae and naani koni amazingly taken ..
performance- every single role is given importance , even those doing very small roles in the film that don't even last for 10 Min's on the whole .. the parents of Surya ( dad - Sachin Khedhekar , MOM - TARA ) have got amazing acting skills , should mention Mrs . Tara no one could've carried out that role that well I feel .. Kajal is so gorgeous, you wouldn't stop gazing at her :D though out the film :) angelic ) as Anjali did complete justice to the role given to her , perfect expressions , very very talented girl :) ...
Suriya :D :) - man , this guy's definitely gonna be legendary very soon :) such is the kind of skills he has got , If there is one that can perform two different characters with so much ease it would be SURYA AND Only Surya :)
The story - twists and turns begin right from the first half and continues till the very end . i must say, 1st half of the film goes so fast that you will forget to even blink, second half is crisp , pace and thrilling and the new version is receiving lots of positives, only brainy people will love the 2nd half I loved it obviously , a message is directly untold and indirectly told is hidden in the end ..
on the whole , according to me , maattrraan is one of Suriya's best film hats off to the hard work, Suriya has taken,Surya touches the heart, he is worth the money he earns , only an immature person would hate the film ..

i just feel Suriya is jinxed (or maybe even cursed by his competitors(Vijay???!)) with back to back scrappy scripts in the form of Rakthacharithram- 7Am Arivu- Maattrraan.Trustable directors are letting him(and us, Tamil audience) down. Prior to that Singam ,Adhavan,Ayan,VA,Kaakha Kaakha,Ghajini were all blockbusters.
Maattrraan was marketed as a technical wizardry.Conjoined twins concept was amazing.Suriya's looks were also dashing.But in the trailer itself one can see the disjoint not-so-perfect Suriyas..........every one is praising "Performance Capture",but it was major flop in the movie.The opening half with 2 Suriyas ,we can clearly see one Surya match very abnormally which increasingly became a glaring joke.Shanker got it wrong when he prolonged VFX scenes(Endhiran fire and climax scenes) Which no Hollywood studio would do.Kamal got it wrong with the tall-afghan guy in Dasavatharam.Why use a technology/Technic when we cannot make perfect output like our Hollywood counterparts.
I very well belief this technical mess got KV Anand sir distracted and as a result he could not churn out a perfect entertaining flick such as Ayan and Ko.Comedy was forced and there were numerous predictable draggy scenes 1)Anniyan Ambi like love letter 2)over- overstretched fight scene at MGM Dizee world-made no sense.It was too long.3)that long drive into that cave at climax scene and a even longer speech session.these are just 3 examples.
2nd half has so much research,but it was a pointless ordeal.the moment Surya shatters the dining table glass we roughly know what will happen in climax.All the twists became clichΓ©d.as Preshanth of Desimaritini mentions "the second half is a big chore, no matter how you look at it. There's not an ounce of suspense and everything that you see here doesn't matter at all. It becomes very evident how things are eventually going to pan out, but we are made to sit through a very long, pointless exposition".
Foreign military were made to look stupid.And again we see hero,heroine missing bullets at close range.
i also thought there was no real need for the conjoined twins.It seem more of a marketing purpose only,just to draw the hype.Except the fact that they were a result of their father's experiment(gone wrong).To me it does not add much literature value other than an eyesore whenever i see the badly matched Cut-n-paste Surya.they could have played another actor(Ajmal?!) as the would-become-dead twin.
finally....Harris Jeyraj has to quit movies.other than songs he cannot make decent Bgm. His climax Bgms were loud and noisy.
KV Anand lost plot midway.Surya looked as if he just wanted to finish off the project asap(as if he knew its going to be another dumb forgettable project like 7Am Arivu).Writers SuBha must reinvent.Harris Jeyraj,KV Anand,Suriya all seem to hastily finish off the project.Everyone pawned AGS Kalpathi Agoram's money and went holiday to that Ukrania or Ukvania(sometimes heard as Rukmenia).
Kajal was the only inspiration(for men) to sit through the ordeal.Women and children can drink "Energion" to keep up.Audience grew impatient towards the end.Some started to clap(mockingly)and sulked at the level of stupidity allowed in a 2012 movie.
Although its an average one-time-watch flick,one deservedly expect much more from the director of Ayan and Ko.
#trivia - Prakash Raj was supposed to do the villain role but he was sacked early.Maybe its a boon in disguise for him -

Moving towards the climax the movie is really boring and people would like to go out. Overall as a common viewer the movie is a flop..... The pasteurization of "NAANI KONI" song is fantastic. Comedy scenes are very well done. Action is also not bad. good story too. But they destroyed the film totally. When comparing to K V Anand's previous movies this one does not even reach near to them.Overall my money is wasted. -

Firstly let us see what is the story about. 2 Suriyas were conjoins born to Sachin Khedekar and his wife. Sachin is a founder and the owner of a company which sells kids energy drink which is the best in the market. To know the secret formula of the drink, a competitor sends a Russian spy to the company and with the help of Kajal and Surya, managed to get some info but was killed. Soon after that, due to an accident one of the Surya is killed and thus both were separated. Then Surya comes to know that the Russian lady was not a spy and the energy drink which was selling in the market actually contains dangerous substances. To find out why his father sells the drink, and who are behind this drink, Surya along with Kajal Agarwal flies to Russia and the films tells the rest.
Surya does his role with ease as usual and the comedies between himself as conjoined twins is the highlight of the First half of the film. Kajal Agarwal looks beautiful and helps the film as a Russian translator. Sachin Khedekar as villain scores too.
1.The first half of the film moves slowly but is overshadowed by the 2 Suriya.
2.The second half is where the film gets extremely interesting and moves in jet speed.
The major strength and the backbone of the film is the story and screenplay. KV Anand and Subha had done a great job. Just like his previous film Ko, KV Anand placed huge importance on the story and it pays off handsomely.
This is the first Indian film which had used performance capture technology and it has worked well showing the 2 Suryas together. Songs were average from Harris but the picturization was good especially Nani Koni Song.
Overall the film entertains highly especially in the 2nd half and KV Anand stamps his name as a director delivering quantity commerical entertainer.
Final Verdict: KV Anand and Subha strikes Gold!!! -
'Maattrraan'... K. V. Anand's conjoined-twins subjected movie delivered an entertaining and racy first half ,but 2nd half was long and deeply flawed with 'Over-the-top' sequences.. Surya was superb ,Kajal Aggarwal has done a decent job.. Peter Hein 's stunts was super high!! Stunts and locations are the main factors i notice in his movies , would be very unique styled. The subject 'Energion' i guess is a slap 2 KFC ;)A big let down from the maker of 'Ayan' and 'KO'..! Though he came with a subject with socially connected , the movie just gone out of his hands in second half and the ending part i almost felt like '7am sense' One Time Watch and easily 4getable...!!

First Half will take your breath away ... second half, though not lengthy still it feels as stretched
This is one of those rarest movie that people would come across.
The Role is Such difficult to play , Hats off to surya for taking all the shots twice(5000 shots) i.e. equal to almost 4 movies,
Hard work always pays off, and this one surely did
The concept is a great one, that is the life and main forte of this movie
However , We can easily blame director for not keeping the twins till last, but just imagine how many more shots surya would have to take, the movie would have took much more time to complete.
Director has tried to put too much of twists. the one thing i didn't like, it consumed time.
Surya is on the road to become one of the most finest actor in tamil film industry, for sure as he is giving one after the other hits , that include the role which he hasn't played earlier, that makes him most versatile actor.
We will have to Salute K.V Anand for choosing such wonderful locations for songs

vikneshsiga13 October 2012The reason why I said it is the best movie is because the story,the characters, and the twists in the movie. The first half of the movie was funny. Usually in a Tamil movie,there must have a comedian but Surya tried to Mange to make the comedies by himself. That is very hard. At first, I thought the Russian lady was a spy and a bad person. Later on only,I come to know that she was trying to save children from the energy drink.twists such as this comes but when will come.that is why I Ike about.again,K V Anand gave us a very good action thriller movie. This time it is bigger and amazing.
Final score:10/10 Best Tamil movie ever. -

* Cast: Surya performance was great as twins and it was different whereas in second half Surya comes back to the single role...Kajal was glamorous and beautiful on the big screen.... * Direction: K.v.anand has taken the film very brilliantly and camera was really good as the visuals were very clear as we are watching an Hollywood movie in both songs and foreign location scenes... * Music and BGM : Harris rocked the songs especially my favorite is "Rendai Thirigae and theeya theya second song" and BGM will vibrate u... * Story : Fantastic thriller ...story starts with a fun package and it gets more disappointment before interval as because the story goes very touching and the second half full of mystery chase... costumes were superb of surya and kajal...- NEGATIVE : story is very large runs 2.40mins... - Second half contains more English and thrilling scripts this will leads some not to get understand....As i understood clearly and enjoyed the flick completely....
If u leave a single scene...u will get completely out of script ...
Overall It will do great at box office and I enjoyed HOPE U also...

nandha016012 October 2012WEll, Not to conceal the truth.. Maattrraan was a disappointing for me, lacked logic big time at some scenes, and some what the movie was incomplete as well.
As usual Tamil movies it starts with hospital scenes and a intro song in which suryas-Vimalan and Akhilan (as they are conjoined twins)transform from kids to teenagers. As their father(sachin Khedekar) who initially struggled in his career, starts a diary industry and eventually makes the ENERGION, which he claims that super efficient, and shows terrific sales output. AS the romantic scenes between suryas and kajal starts, Movie takes a pleasant route, side by side the thrill is built up as a Russian girl tries to take pictures of documents from Khedekar office and death of his R&D employee.. Movie takes complex turn and adds further complications further, as the story is related to Russian pesticide company which is imported to India and used for feeding cows which gives tremendous output As Khedekar starts killing everyone who knows about his secret, his son get no exception.. and subsequently vimalan is killed and as Akhilan finds his dad is responsible for all mishaps, he joins hands with Kajal(who initially romanced with Vimalan)and tries to solve mysteries of the issue.. and eventually like usual Tamil cinemas, the hero receives a medal of honor and Kajal and Surya gets married..
Bottom line : Worth a watch once for SURYA -
chriskrin13 October 2012To start off with the story.. its about conjoined twins who are born to genetic engineering father. his father after being rejected for his research starts his own milk product. how this highly marketed well rich product becomes a real problem for the future generation and how his single son(who gets separated from his conjoined brother) investigates it and finds the real culprit is the crux of the film.. first half of the film is very fun entertaining and how both of them are brought up in their life is well presented..conjoined twins (surya) how do they live and dressed all are well detailed and their doubt on their father is real suspense to the film which is well created in fist half. In the second half the film starts its investigation and how it happens all are very well made with more research work being done on genetics and is well linked with some history events occurred.. Its an intellectual film. ENJOY THE FILM AND THE NEW EXPERIENCE. i wont say about songs since i hate songs in films.. Rest enjoy only in theaters.. say no to piracy

Maattrraan is an extraordinary flick. Surya is at his best in the movie. Suriya has shown some exceptional acting skills. K.V.Anand has done his best, while Kajal is dazzling in a glamorous role. The only minus point to the movie was that second half was a bit lengthy with slow screenplay. It was a wise decision to reduce the length by 22 min. Perfect story with excellent screenplay and awesome performance by actors made this a worth watching flick. For all viewers who got bored by routine movies, this is definitely a worth watching flick and for Surya, it is a BOX OFFICE BONANZA!!! I would rate 10/10 for performance by artists, 10/10 for direction, 9/10 for screenplay,10/10 for story.

I was speechless when i saw the acting of Surya's character as Akilan when he cry a lot during the death of Vimalan. Surya has given life to the character Akilan. Even he has managed a decent performance as Vimalan. He has carried the movie on his shoulders. His efforts for performing as a conjoined twin is extraordinary. On the account of Kajal Agarwal, what is her role in the film remains a black hole. Sachin Khadhekar is OK with his performance. The cinematography and the choreography of the song "Theeye Theeye" is a great one. Naani Koni song locations are awesome. K.V. Anand has failed to give the pleasure in the first half to second half. Surya being a Vijay and Ajith fan looks for a good relationship. Harris Jayaraj has stolen the 2nd half theme music from the film "whistle". Also "Kaal Mulaitha Poove" song is stolen from "Hawwa Hawwa" of "Rockstar" but it is managed with the awesome lyrics of Madan Karky. Overall the film is once a watch and is strictly for the efforts and performance of Surya. Surya proves himself again as MR. PERFECTIONIST of Kollywood. Rating-> Surya-> 10/10 Kajal-> 3/10 K.V. Ananad-> 5/10 Harris-> 5/10 Cinematography-> 7/10. Watch this movie only for Surya.

Cause k.v Anand has done a very neat job in scripting and directing this movie . He is one of the big budget directors in tamil cinema. The first half had fun and thrilling scenes. It was different to see an actor who did something really brilliant after a long time. Surya has proved his acting in different movies. And this movie he strikes the cord. Which is really appreciable. And harris jayaraj was really amazing. His bgms were really impressive. This movie actually required more appreciation than it received. In fact it dint receive any. I think tamilnadu folks don't understand science fictions or they probably need those lungi dances and local cheap stuffs. People should improve. Then probably tamil cinema will improve cause the directors are ready to give impressive scripts but are only going back because of the stupid people.
