The developers behind Risen 2, Piranha Bytes, are known for the Gothic series, whose best feature was by far exploration: big, detailed, carefully built worlds with distinctive-looking locations. Risen, while flawed, still offered an intriguing world to explore.

Sadly, in spite of its relatively novel pirate setting, Risen 2 doesn't deliver the same compelling exploration; the biggest offender is being unable to swim, which in a pirate RPG is something of a joke.

There are a few engaging ideas, like choosing between conflicting factions with access to different companions and abilities (guns or magic), but it's not enough to rise (badum-tsh) above mediocrity.
  • I for one thought at the beginning the combat was very very very basic and kind of a turn off but once I got further I found I enjoyed the game more the longer I played it. I thought it was actually a very well put together story. For the other person complaining about having to pay 500 dollars to kick someone, that's not what it was called. It was a part of sword fighting. Either Riposte or something else. Yes things that would seem natural you actually have to spend money to learn. That is how rpg works. That other person obviously has no concept of that. As for the graphics coming together all the time. That depends on the graphical settings. I don't know if that person was playing it on a console or pc but pc looking pretty damn beautiful. Not as good as the new Tomb Raider but still.
  • Well for starters a terrible plot line which pretty much rips off pirates of the Caribbean but adding titans, the games combat is stiff and plain very simple but overall unfair, you have to pay 500 gold just to learn how to kick someone? And the look of the landscapes well not to mention every cave jungle or island looks identical with no thought put into the poor, shabby landscapes , everywhere you go you have to wait for the landscapes to actually come together. Quests are also unfair by not giving any clue of what or where to do or go next and are short and meaningless. But apart from that there is some good things about this there is a wide variety of items to buy and sell. Lots of quests to do. A wide range of 'annoying' enemies and of course free roam. But a terrible waste of what could of been a very good game...
