“Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.” That Abraham Lincoln quote sums up the quiet, thoughtful dignity that actors have tried to portray on film for several generations now. And on screen, the 16th president has done everything from meeting Shirley Temple to fighting vampires. In honor of President’s Day, here are some of the actors who have played Honest Abe over the years.

The racism in “The Birth of a Nation” aside, D.W. Griffith stages the assassination of Abraham Lincoln as a true national tragedy, and he does so in ravishing display, staging a scene everyone already knows but hadn’t yet visualized on film, using never before seen intercutting and sweeping wide shots as John Wilkes Booth dives from the balcony to provide ravishing tension and action.

Having successfully killed all of the people in history who were actually killed — the list begins and ends with Lincoln, JFK and Jesus, apparently — Bill O'Reilly turned the attentions of his inexplicably successful factoid franchise to people who weren't really killed, starting with Ronald Reagan. The non-assassination of the B-movie star, conservative icon and our 40th president has now become the fourth of Reilly's books to be transferred to the small screen by National Geographic, a process that began with the misguided mixture of corny reenactments, talking heads and narration that was Killing Lincoln in 2013.

The National Geographic Channel is switching its attentions from the assassinations of presidents, to the assassination of religious figures – with a four hour mini-series adaptation of the 2013 book Killing Jesus, by Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard. As the follow-up to the successful TV versions of their earlier books, Killing Lincoln and Killing Kennedy, the project will be written and executive produced by Walon Green (Law & Order: Criminal Intent), with Christopher Menaul (Summer In February) in the director’s chair.
This re-telling of the life and death of Jesus is set against the backdrop of intense conflict within the Roman Empire, and will now star multiple Emmy award-winner Kelsey Grammer (The Expendables 3) as King Herod – “the unrelenting and ambitious Roman King of Judea, who attempted to kill Jesus at his birth.” Stephen Moyer (True Blood) will feature as Pontius Pilate – the fifth prefect of Judaea, and the man who ordered the crucifixion of Jesus.

This would be the fourth time the pair has appeared on screen together after Joe Versus the Volcano,...

Veteran News Corp executive David Hill has been named chairman of National Geographic Channels Group and David Lyle is departing as the Us CEO.
This shake-up follows Monday.s announcement that Howard Owens, the president of the division, is leaving in June.
The timing is curious because the Nat Geo Channels are posting record profits and some of their shows are enjoying their highest -ever ratings in the Us.
Us media reports indicated Owens and Lyle had clashed with the top brass at the National Geographic Society, which co-owns the channels with Fox Networks.
Lyle is being replaced by Courteney Monroe, who had served as chief marketing officer. After two-plus years on the job, Howard T. Owens is leaving the National Geographic Channels. The co-founder of Reveille and former William Morris agent joined the Washington DC-based group in late 2011, and as president, oversaw a major programming overhaul that included a slew of reality television series and specials based on Fox News host Bill O'Reilly's historical books. “Brain Games,” “Wicked Tuna” and “Killing Lincoln” were among his signature programming achievements. In a statement, Peter Rice, National Geographic's CEO, praised Owens for breaking new ground and leaving the company “uniquely positioned for the future.” “As I get ready for my next adventure.

Though not a fan of Bill O’Reilly, I can appreciate his examinations of historic events (namely the deaths of some very prominent figures) as a student of history. The filmic adaptations of those examinations, however, have a definite hit or miss quality thus far. With Killing Lincoln, what could have been an interesting retelling of President Lincoln’s assassination was marred by some genuinely awful acting on the part of Jesse Johnson and production values that made it look as cheap as its “made for TV movie” origins would have you expect. With Killing Kennedy, the sins of the previous adaptation are corrected, with the film having a noticeably higher caliber of production behind it and with performances by its two leads (Rob Lowe and Will Rothhaar) easily besting those in Killing Lincoln. And while the examination of Kennedy’s assassination is incredibly shallow and doesn’t dive into any of the conspiracy theories,...

If you are one of the few cool people who have not been watching Helix, or if you are amongst the millions who have watched it and know you need to rewatch to pick up the clues you missed the first or fourth time around, here is great news: Syfy will be airing every episode (that’s five so far) tomorrow (Thursday) night starting at 6/5c.
Seriously, if you have only seen each episode once, make sure to watch this marathon; you’ll be surprised at how much you missed the first time around. Today was a busy day for some of the smaller guilds with the Visual Effects Society, the Cinema Audio Society, and the Makeup and Hairstylists Guilds all announcing their nominations for 2013.
First, we have the Ves, whose main category to look at is “Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature Motion Picture,” where we find Gravity and four other nominees that are just going to have to be happy with the fact that they got nominated. This is perhaps the easiest category to call in the entirety of awards season, and I don’t mean just here, but for the Oscar as well (Last year’s winner, Life of Pi, easily took this category before going on to claim the Oscar). If you’ve recently found yourself roaming the pages of SciFi Mafia, we thank you. Secondarily, you may have noticed we’ve devoted a fair amount of space to Syfy‘s new series Helix. That’s not just because Battlestar Galactica‘s Ron Moore is an executive producer of the show, though he is, and it’s not just because the creator of the series, Cameron Porsandeh, is a really terrific guy who has given us two exclusive interviews (the first is here, the second will be posted soon), though he has.
Nor is it because SciFi Mafia attended a really cool set tour and panel interview in Montreal, though that’s true as well. The fact of the matter is that Helix has been given a lot of space here because one, it sounded like it would be a great series, and two, because it turned out that it is a great series.
