A New Orleans native who was raised in Tennessee, Reese Witherspoon is the very definition of good things coming in petite 5-foot-1 packages. She made her film debut at age 14 in 1991’s “The Man in the Moon,” a bittersweet Southern coming-of-age tale of first love and loss. From then on, she was pegged as a young actress to watch. She would soon gravitate towards edgier fare such as the underwhelming 1994 comedy “S.F.W.” and 1996’s “Freeway,” a rancid take on a Little Red Riding Hood on the run. She then scored a signature role as the rabidly ruthless high-school over-achiever Tracy Flick in 1999’s political satire “Election.” That was followed by her first major box-office hit, 2001’s “Legally Blonde,” as a perky Harvard student with a penchant for pink, feathered pens and cute Chihuahuas.

“Road House” is an infectiously stylish piece of slumming. It’s a remake of the 1989 Patrick Swayze cheeseball action cult film, and it’s staged with a verve and wit and dynamic grittiness that make the original film look even more rickety than it once did. Doug Liman, the director of the new “Road House,” has always been a gifted maverick, but I still like his earliest films the best. For years now, he has worked hard to make interesting and responsible dramas, but watching “Road House” you can taste how good it must have felt for him to be irresponsible — to give in to his savage B-movie id.
The action in “Road House” is beyond brutal; at moments, it’s vicious. Yet if the movie is far more violent than your average action film, in its slightly crackpot bare-knuckle way it’s also more humane. Liman stages the pulp...

Released via Bad Seed in partnership with Play It Again Sam, Wild God will span 10 tracks, each produced by Cave and Warren Ellis. In addition to the band’s lineup — consisting of Cave, Ellis, Thomas Wydler, Martyn Casey, Jim Sclavunos, and George Vjestica — Luis Almau and Radiohead’s Colin Greenwood made contributions to the album.
Speaking about Wild God in a new statement, Cave expressed a “hope [that] the album has the effect on listeners that it’s had on me.” Continuing, he explained: “It bursts out of the speaker, and I get swept up with it. It’s a complicated record, but it’s also deeply and joyously infectious. There is never a master plan when we make a record.

For Henry Hill, the appeal of becoming a mobster is simple. “They weren’t like anybody else. They did whatever they wanted,” he explains in the famous monologue at the start of Goodfellas. “They parked in front of hydrants and never got a ticket. When they played cards all night nobody ever called the cops.”
Hank might also add to the list that they get the best deals at the grocery store, something that happens to wiseguy Vinnie Antonelli in the comedy My Blue Heaven. Noticing an unattended pricing gun, Vinnie gives himself a huge markdown on a bunch of steaks. When the cashier totals the haul at less than $20, he’s too impressed with the $100 bill Vinnie handed him to call foul. Even the manager only stops Vinnie to give the former mobster a comment card, saying nothing of the steal of a deal that just occurred.

There is perhaps no band on Earth that more completely embodies the rock 'n' roll spirit than Japan's Guitar Wolf. The most powerful of power trios has been kicking ass around the world for decades, but for film fans, their moment was in 1999, with the release of their genre-bending classic, Wild Zero. Written and directed by Takeuchi Tetsuro, Wild Zero pitted Guitar Wolf against aliens and zombies hellbent on taking over the planet. However, as crazy as that sounds, it was only the beginning of one of cinema's greatest achievements. Now, twenty five years later, Tetsuro and the boys are revving up to take another crack at it and they need our help. Interested in making Wild Zero 2 a reality? Check out the...

Outlaw Posse is a western anchored by Van Peebles' charismatic lead performance. The film features a starry supporting cast that adds depth and complements the eccentric characters. Despite attempts at political commentary, the movie fumbles important messages due to multiple subplots.
Mario Van Peebles' revisionist western, Posse, ended with a caption lamenting Hollywood's erasure of 8,000 black cowboys and their stories. Thirty years later, Outlaw Posse attempts to shine a light on the Old West's diverse history, with mixed results. Outlaw Posse isn't a sequel to the 1993 western and the director is no longer directly reacting to Hollywood's whitewashed vision of America's past. Instead, Van Peebles reacts to the binary times of the present, presenting a western that celebrates diversity, and the role it must play in building the prosperous nation first promised by those early Wild West pioneers.

Early in 1964, when former cop-turned-television-producer Gene Roddenberry was developing the Science Fiction/Western-in-space series concept that would become Star Trek, he had an idea for a highly intelligent alien character, possibly green or reddish, and with pointed ears. He asked Gary Lockwood, star of Roddenberry's short-lived series The Lieutenant who should play the role. Lockwood suggested Leonard Nimoy, someone they had both worked with on The Lieutenant series. Although actors Michael Dunn, and Deforest Kelley (who would go to play Dr. Leonard McCoy in Star Trek) was briefly considered for the role, but it appeared that Nimoy was always Roddenberry's first and only choice for the role of Mr. Spock.

Best Power Rangers teams had compelling superhero/civilian dynamics, from original Mighty Morphin to newer shows. The best Power Rangers series often subverted or leaned heavily on established tropes to create unique teams. Wild Force, Zeo, Ninja Storm, Lightspeed Rescue, Time Force, Lost Galaxy, Dino Fury, Dino Thunder, In Space, and Mighty Morphin are standout teams.

There have been 30 Power Rangers seasons since 1993, most of which were standalone series that ran for one or two years maximum. Local channel owners may see an opportunity to profit from the announced Jv, but it could spell doom for Fubo.
The entire sports media world was rocked by Tuesday’s announcement that Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery would join their sports rights together in a new streaming joint venture. Cable providers and live TV streaming services stand to lose the most from the venture, and the sports-centric live TV streaming service Fubo issued a public response on Wednesday in which it made clear that it had serious concerns about the plan.
Fubo estimates the new Jv streaming service from Disney, Fox, and Wbd would control “60-85%” of all sports content in the United States. The Streamable estimates that Jv streamer will come in at around half the price point of a monthly Fubo subscription. Fubo has been struggling to build scale and stands at just 1.48 million subscribers at last count.

In 2020, Laura Dern celebrated with her very first Oscar win for “Marriage Story”! It was a fitting gift to the veteran actress, who has starred in dozens of quality films throughout her lengthy career. Let’s take a look back at her career by ranking her 16 greatest film performances.
Dern began her career as a teenager close to four decades ago. She seemed to initially aspire to a more normal life but her attempts to finish her college degree at the University of Southern California were continually interrupted by obtaining plum film roles. That she’d eventually settle into an acting career isn’t surprising since her father Bruce Dern is a two time Oscar nominee and her mother Diane Ladd a three time contender
Dern would go on to earn two Oscar nominations of her own for “Rambling Rose” (1991) and “Wild” (2014), plus work steadily in both film and television...

The 1980s enjoys a privileged, some might even argue inflated position in the sci-fi pantheon. In the US, it was the decade that gave us two thirds of the original Star Wars trilogy, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, Terminator and Tron. In TV land, Star Trek got a brand new Generation, Quantums Leapt, Knights Rode, and of course, Alf.
But on the other side of the pond, British science fiction television was doing things the way we British always have – for less money, and a bit more bleak. But it wasn’t all creepy John Wyndham adaptations and hostile alien invasions, the 1980s also delivered a couple of British space comedy classics, along with the most underrated series in sci-fi history.

The Sundance Film Festival is regarded as one of the most prestigious independent film festivals, where filmmakers have been premiering their movies and documentaries since 1984.
The festival was founded in 1978 by Sterling Van Wagenen, the head of Robert Redford’s company Wildwood, and John Earle of the Utah Film Commission under the name Utah/US Film Festival to attract more filmmakers to Utah.
Redford founded the Sundance Institute in 1981 to foster independence, risk-taking, and new voices in American film. That year, 10 emerging filmmakers were invited to the Sundance Resort in the mountains of Utah, where they worked with leading writers, directors and actors to develop their original independent projects.
By 1984, the festival had established itself and was officially renamed the Sundance Film Festival after Redford’s character in his 1969 film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. That year, the Grand Jury Prize in Dramatics was awarded to Old Enough, an...

From games being strewn across an ever-increasing number of networks and streamers, it is getting extremely difficult for football fans to watch all of the games.
The NFL’s Super Wild Card Weekend and Divisional rounds are over, and as usual, the first two rounds of the league’s postseason had some thrillers, along with some clunkers. One of the biggest talking points following the games so far has been the debate over the wisdom of placing an NFL playoff game — one of the ratings prizes of the entire television year — exclusively on a streaming service for a national audience. Peacock’s first-ever streaming-exclusive playoff game drew good ratings for the Wild Card matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins, so when coupled with the fact that “Thursday Night Football” games air on Prime Video and most “Monday Night Football” contests also stream on ESPN+, the NFL has...

Annette Bening is an actor’s actor. Like many of the greats before her, she began her career in the theatre. Through the 80s, she quietly compiled a library of rich, complex characters before making her Tony-nominated broadway debut in 1987’s “Coastal Disturbances.”
Bening then made her well deserved transition over to Hollywood with John Hughes’ “The Great Outdoors.” The film didn’t perform as well as hoped, nor did Milos Forman’s “Valmont” which was released the following year, but they both paved the way for Bening’s eventual Oscar-nominated breakout as Myra Langtry in Stephen Frears’ “The Grifters.”
She got particularly close to Oscar gold with “American Beauty” in 2000. Annette bagged the BAFTA and SAG award for her iconic portrayal of the colourfully volatile wife-in-crisis, Carolyn Burnham. She lost to Hilary Swank (“Boys Don’t Cry”) though, who had edged her out at the Globes.

Swiss film producers and financiers Karl Spoerri and Viviana Vezzani have been Sundance regulars for more than 15 years, but this edition is special.
The pair, who were driving forces behind the Zurich Film Festival (Zff) up until 2019, are in Park City this year with Thelma, which is the first feature from their new company Zurich Avenue to make it into Sundance.
Josh Margolin’s action-comedy-drama, starring 94-year-old June Squibb as a L.A. grandmother who sets off on a friend’s mobility scooter on a mission to track down an Internet scammer, is proving one of the early hits of the festival.
“On a personal level, it’s very meaningful because Sundance was always a big influence for us at the Zurich Film Festival from the start,” says Vezzani.
“We always loved going as programmers so getting Thelma accepted at Sundance was a dream come true.”

As Andrea Riseborough (“To Leslie”), Penélope Cruz (“Parallel Mothers”), and Lakeith Stanfield (“Judas and the Black Messiah”) have proven in recent years, there is ample precedent for performers to earn Oscar nominations despite snubs at the BAFTA, Critics Choice, Golden Globe, and SAG Awards. Indeed, 18 such instances have occurred since 2002, the first year that all four precursor prizes were preceded by official nominations.
Over the last 22 years, each of the four acting Oscar categories has produced at least three out-of-the-blue bids. However, none of the performers who overcame their four earlier snubs managed to clinch the gold and instead had to settle for being Oscar finalists.
It’s worth noting that Marcia Gay Harden won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “Pollock” without any precursor bids, albeit in 2001 when there were no Critics Choice nominations. The four precursor trophies were evenly distributed among her Oscar competitors: Judi Dench, Kate Hudson,...

The Ice Age franchise has been successful financially, but the quality of the movies varies significantly. It started out as a wonderful family adventure but became a disappointing recycling of ideas. The latest Ice Age spinoff, "The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild," caters to a younger audience and lacks the appeal of the original characters. The animation quality is also lower compared to previous films. "Ice Age: Collision Course" and "Ice Age: Continental Drift" showed signs of fatigue in the franchise, with overcrowded storylines and lackluster narratives. "Ice Age: The Meltdown" and "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" were more successful in introducing fresh elements and providing entertaining adventures.
The Ice Age franchise has been around for 20 years, becoming one of the most popular animated franchises yet only one entry can be named the best Ice Age movie. The franchise has managed to amass an impressive total of $3.2 billion...

The Critics Choice Awards bounced back a bit this year on The CW.
After posting a record low last year, Sunday’s ceremony managed just more than 1 million viewers, up 14% over last year, according to Nielsen data. The audience peaked toward the end of the show with 1.14M viewers.
The CW is touting this as the ceremony’s largest audience on the network in four years, though the Critics Choice Awards were simulcast across The CW and TBS in 2022. That ceremony took home 1.1M viewers. So technically, yes, The CW’s portion of viewers has gone up, but that’s because it hosts the show alone now. Viewership is still down from 2020, when the show put up around 1.3M viewers.
The Critics Choice Awards has managed to recuperate from the historic lows it reached during the pandemic, though. The virtual 2021 edition drew just 365,000 total viewers.

There’s no denying the offering of a playoff game exclusively on a streaming platform was a gamble for the NFL. But that gamble appears to have paid off, as NBCUniversal is announcing that Saturday’s Wild Card game between the Miami Dolphins and Kansas City Chiefs drew more viewers than any other livestreamed event in the history of the United States, averaging 23 million total viewers across platforms.

There is plenty of precedent for performers to still earn Oscar nominations after snubs by the Critics Choice Awards, Golden Globes and SAG Awards. Last year, Andrea Riseborough became the latest Oscar contender to come out of nowhere when she reaped a Best Actress bid for “To Leslie.”
She joined a roster of 23 other performers who heard their names on Oscar nominations morning despite being repeatedly overlooked earlier in awards season. However, for all of those who overcame these earlier snubs the nomination had to be reward enough as none took home the Oscar.

Frances McDormand won with that group for both “Almost Famous” and “Wonder Boys,” Kate Hudson took home the Globe for “Almost Famous” and Judi Dench prevailed at SAG for “Chocolat.

The Kansas City Chiefs win over the Miami Dolphins was a record breaker for Peacock.
The Chiefs defeated the Dolphins on their home turf at Arrowhead Stadium Saturday, fighting through negative temperatures to advance to the Divisional Round of the NFL playoffs. The AFC Wild Card game was streamed exclusively on Peacock for most of the U.S., though the game was available on NBC stations in both home cities.
The game averaged 23M viewers across Peacock, NBC stations in Miami and Kansas City, and NFL+. That’s apparently the most-streamed live event in U.S. history, peaking with nearly 25M viewers in the second quarter, NBCUniversal reports.
The Chiefs-Dolphins matchup boosted Peacock to its largest single day ever in audience usage, engagement, and time spent with 16.3M concurrent devices.

The recent 60th anniversary episode of Doctor Who showed that the Sonic Screwdriver isn't as important as it used to be. The Doctor's abilities and intellect can be more interesting without relying on the device. Modern Doctor Who has overused the Sonic Screwdriver, relying on it too heavily to solve tough situations. This has weakened the storytelling and made the Doctor's accomplishments less impressive. Doctor Who season 14 can address the Sonic Screwdriver problem by using it less or making it less useful. Ncuti Gatwa's new Doctor could potentially find other methods or lose the Screwdriver altogether, making the show more exciting and unpredictable.
With Ncuti Gatwa having officially premiered as the Fifteenth Doctor in the 60th anniversary episodes of Doctor Who, anticipation is high for his new season, however in some ways, the series is already setting him back by continuing old traditions such as the Sonic Screwdriver. Doctor...

“May December,” the newest acclaimed drama film from Todd Haynes, is now available to stream on Netflix, and one of the film’s stars, Julianne Moore, is already an early favorite to receive a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for her spellbinding performance. Let’s look back at her five Academy Award races and talk about why Moore finally won her first gold trophy in 2015 for “Still Alice” (2014).
Her first Oscar nomination came in 1998 in the Best Supporting Actress category for “Boogie Nights” (1997). Moore’s only Academy Award nom of the 1990s put her up against Joan Cusack for “In & Out,” Minnie Driver for “Good Will Hunting,” Gloria Stuart for “Titanic” and Kim Basinger for “L.A. Confidential.” Moore didn’t have a chance that first time around because Basinger dominated the category all season, her beloved film often showing up in the Best Picture and Best Director categories,...

Marvel Studios’ new series Echo is only a month away, and it’s turning a lot of heads by boasting the mature content it is said to feature. The show that connects to the MCU joins the gritty takes that have been emulated from similar Marvel shows like Daredevil and The Punisher, which feature lower-level urban-type threats, and our heroes don’t hold back on the brutality of justice or vengeance. The juggernaut film and TV studio recently held an advance screening of the first two episodes and reactions recently have poured onto social media. While the attendees have kept their lips tight on details, they do reiterate how incredibly dark the show was.
A user with the handle @twpercival1 posted, “Saw the first two episodes of #echo tonight and have a lot of thoughts. I think fans of Netflix’s Daredevil are going to love it. It’s like...

As Miami Art Week and lead fair Art Basel Miami Beach wraps up its 21st year, by night there were fashion events, popups, concerts, dining debuts, cocktail soirees and philanthropy moments to match and exceed every by-day art buy. During the week-long festivities — in which the Magic City is taken over by celebrities, musicians, artists and collectors — star chefs, performers, credit card companies and fashion, liquor and watch brands were all heavily in the mix alongside dealers and collectors. For some, it was quite possible to spend an entire week traversing from the beach to Brickell and from Downtown to the Design District attending art-adjacent parties and never even seeing any of the fairs.
Here are the highlights of what happened around town when everyone was not looking at art.

Director Wes Ball drops a thrilling tease for Studio Ghibli fans by hinting The Legend of Zelda movie adaptation will draw heavy inspiration from Hayao Miyazaki.
It's easy to imagine a collaborative project happening between Nintendo and Studio Ghibli. Both companies have a treasure trove of well-loved IPs that can seamlessly cross over their respective media — Kaonashi or Totoro are easy picks as Super Smash Bros. character DLCs, and Animal Crossing's Villager can be an Easter egg in Ponyo or My Neighbors the Yamadas. As for the upcoming film adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, it's fortunate the project is helmed by Wes Ball, who is a confessed Zelda and Miyazaki fan. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the director may have just granted the wishes of two massive fandoms when he said Zelda is going to be a "live-action Miyazaki."

Warning! Spoilers for Doctor Who's second 60th-anniversary special, "Wild Blue Yonder," are ahead.
"Midnight" and "Wild Blue Yonder" are Doctor Who's scariest episodes due to the fear of the unknown and the eerie atmosphere. "Wild Blue Yonder" tests the friendship between the Doctor and Donna as they try to determine who is real and who is an alien copycat. "Midnight" emphasizes the horrifying consequences of fear and pressure on the human psyche, highlighting the real monsters within people.
Doctor Who has had quite a few scary episodes over the years, but season 4, episode 10, "Midnight," has universally been acknowledged as the crowning jewel of sci-fi horror — now the second 60th-anniversary special, "Wild Blue Yonder," is able to compete for the title as well. The former episode is unique in its premise and execution, and it is Doctor Who's Midnight entity that makes the story so blood-curdling simply because...
