In a major shift for Oscar voting protocol, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that members will now be required to confirm they’ve watched all nominated films in a category before being allowed to vote in that race.
The initiative, aimed at strengthening the integrity and credibility of the awards process, combines digital tracking through the Academy Screening Room with member-reported viewings — building on a structure already familiar to Academy voters.
How It Works
Beginning with the 98th Academy Awards, ballots during the final voting phase will only unlock for members who have verified they’ve watched all nominated films in a given category. This requirement applies across all 24 competitive Oscar categories, from best picture and the acting races to costume design and the newly introduced award for casting.

After his Amazon MGM film “Nickel Boys” got a Best Picture nomination, writer/director RaMell Ross is eyeing his next projects — but understands that funding could prove a hurdle.
Ross told The Hollywood Reporter at Sunday’s Oscars that, after making his feature narrative debut with “Nickel Boys,” he knows that financing his indies would be a “philanthropic” venture due to a lack of guaranteed financial return.
“I think I’ve made enough films for people to say that I can make things relatively well,” Ross said. “So I’m asking someone to give me $10 million for two projects. Both of them, I think, have long cultural lives, but it has to be philanthropic because it’s not really a return. But I think they’re deep in meaning and can change a lot of people’s view on the world.”
He added of both potential projects, “They’re written out.

Despite the sweep for Anora, most of this year's Best Picture nominees went home with awards. Golden Globe favorite The Brutalist went home with three, followed by Emelia Perez, Dune: Part II, and Wicked each garnering two, and lastly, I'm Still Here, Conclave, and The Substance all left with one award. The only snubs were the robustly nominated A Complete Unknown, and a smaller film that only scored one other nomination: Nickel Boys. The latter film, a debut narrative feature from documentarian RaMell Ross, came into award season with a high degree of pedigree. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Colson Whitehead, Nickel Boys began amassing huge critical acclaim after premiering on the festival circuit, but sadly, this did not translate to the awards. While two Oscar nominations are nice, Nickel Boys deserved to win Oscars it wasn't even nominated for.

The Oscars, at its best, is a time-honored tradition that focuses on the magic of the movies and the movie industry. It basks us all in the warm golden glow of massive celebrity and wealth. The faces change (every Oscar host ever has a quip or three about this being due to plastic surgery), but the iconic archetypes they fill stay the same. Who is this year's ingénue, rising star, member of the old guard, decade-long celeb finally earning a nom, fresh-faced director, standby legendary filmmaker with countless wins to their name... the list of roles goes on.
It's like the water in a river; the ripples look consistent, but the water itself continues to pass through rapidly. Under the surface of it all, though, is this unique big business's dual identity as a modern art form. The Oscars always try to remind us that behind the pretty faces are...

In 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery launched its “Diversity Digest,” a quarterly update on the company’s Dei efforts. The first installment highlighted Latino representation in “Blue Beetle” and home renovation show “Rico to the Rescue.”
But after regular updates in 2024, the digest went silent after the election of President Trump. Last week, the feature was dropped from the company’s Dei page, along with Wbd’s commitments to equity and diversity outreach, as the company narrowed its focus to “inclusion.” The move came as Trump has sought to stamp out Dei programs at the federal level and threatened civil and criminal investigations of private companies. Last month, the Federal Communications Commission opened an investigation of Comcast, the parent of NBCUniversal — and MSNBC — for possibly pursuing “invidious forms of discrimination” under the banner of Dei.
“Bullying is causing a lot of companies to reassess,” says Vernā Myers, former head of inclusion at Netflix.

Just a week ago, the 2025 SAG Awards, which took place after voting for the 2025 Oscars ended, had pundits wondering if precursor wins by Anora, Mikey Madison and Adrien Brody meant that they might not be bound for Oscars glory. SAG Awards wins by Conclave (best cast), Demi Moore (best actress) and Timothée Chalamet (best actor) led to speculation that Conclave, Moore and Chalamet could win big at the Academy Awards.
But it turns out the Oscars were on board with Anora, Madison and Brody. Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or winner was named best picture; Madison, in a surprise, nabbed best actress over veteran Demi Moore (who numerous pundits predicted would win with her first Oscar nomination after a long career and wins at the SAG Awards, Critics Choice and Golden Globes); and Brody defeated Chalamet.
Additionally, all three films — Conclave, The Substance and A Complete Unknown — seemingly underperformed Sunday night.

The 97th Academy Awards have wrapped and the entire 2025 Oscars winners list has been unveiled. We live updated the winners list throughout the entire night as the statuettes were handed out at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
“Anora” won five of the six Oscars for which it was nominated: Best Picture, Best Director Sean Baker, Best Original Screenplay (also for Baker), Best Editor (Baker again), and Best Actress for Mikey Madison. the only category it lost was Yura Borisov’s nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
Anne Thompson’s final predictions were mostly right! It was undeniable that the Oscar race changed dramatically since the nominations were announced on January 23, and “Emilia Pérez” received 13 nods, the most ever for a non-English-language movie. The Jacques Audiard film ended up winning just two awards.

Hollywood’s biggest night has come to an end, and as usual, the Academy Awards delivered plenty of memorable moments.
But as much as we loved the James Bond tribute and the hilarious monologue from first-time host Conan O’Brien, the winners and their acceptance speeches were the focus of the night.
Several deserving stars took home their very first Oscars, including Mikey Madison, who headlined the biggest winner of the night, the audacious sex work dramedy Anora.

Anora writer and director Sean Baker advocated for independent filmmaking during his final speech at the 97th Academy Awards, when his film won the top prize.
“We made this movie for $6 million shooting on location in New York City with about 40 crew members. They’re all back in New York. This is for you guys,” he said. “If you’re trying to make independent films, please keep doing it. We need more. This is proof.”
Producer Samantha Quan added to Baker’s sentiment with a message to aspiring filmmakers: “We made this with very little money, but all of our hearts. To all of the dreamers and the young filmmakers, tell the stories you want to tell. Tell the story that move you. I promise you, you will never regret it.”

Sunday, March 2 is the day we’ve been waiting for all awards season — the 2025 Oscars! The best in film from the last year will be recognized during the 97th Academy Awards, kicking off nice and early for the second year in a row at 7/6c on ABC and Hulu. While movies like Wicked and Dune: Part Two made a splash this year — and snagged a handful of nominations each — this year’s nominees are a little less blockbuster-geared than with 2024’s epic Barbie–Oppennheimer race. The other (more quietly loved) films in contention for Best Picture inn 2025 are Anora, The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Emilia Pérez, I’m Still Here, Nickel Boys, and The Substance. It’s anyone’s night! And after four years with Jimmy Kimmel at the helm, the ceremony is turning to first-time Oscars host Conan O’Brien, and we can’t wait to see how he brings...

The 97th Academy Awards' red carpet presented more than Hollywood's A-list donning dazzling fashion; it highlighted an actor throwing his hat in the ring to star in the next James Bond. Joe Alwyn, who quietly dated Taylor Swift for 6 years, expressed his interest in portraying the iconic spy. When asked by Variety if he would be interested in tackling the role of Agent 007, Alwyn shared:
"Oh, wow. Who wouldn't throw their hat in the ring? You know?"
The Brutalist star also joked that he would portray Bond "if you're offering!" The Bond talk continued as the English actor was asked about his martini preference. Alwyn shared he enjoyed Bond's favorite cocktail both shaken and stirred.
Talks about who would be the next Bond have ramped up since Daniel Craig departed the role in 2021, following No Time to Die. Over the decades, Bond has been portrayed by talented actors like Barry Nelson,...

Conclave screenwriter Peter Straughan is now an Academy Award winner. The honor comes after Straughan picked up wins at the BAFTAs, Golden Globes, and Critics' Choice Awards.
At the Academy Awards on Sunday night, Straughan was announced as the winner for Best Adapted Screenplay. This is the second nomination for the writer, but the first time he has picked up the win. He was nominated for the 2011 film Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, which managed to get him a win at the BAFTAs and other awards shows, but he came up short at the Oscars. The screenwriter is now getting his flowers, and it is clear from his Oscar win acceptance speech how proud he feels to have gotten the honor.

The bumpy road to Oscar glory will reach its end Sunday night at the 97th Academy Awards, closing out one of the most unpredictable awards seasons in years. Ups and downs, twists and turns, mudslinging, mea culpas, tears both happy and sad — we’ve seen it all in recent weeks as the race kept us guessing what new upheaval might come next.
And that includes who wins tonight. “Emilia Pérez” might have the most nominations (13), but Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language musical lost its frontrunner status pretty much the moment star Karla Sofía-Gascón’s history of bigoted tweets resurfaced. In stepped “Anora,” which won top prizes with both the PGA and DGA and seemed ready to sail to a Best Picture victory…until “Conclave” swept in and showed us that the race was much tighter than we’d thought.

It's all come down to this. Gold Derby has been predicting the 2025 Oscars since way back in July, when Sing Sing was the initial No. 1 pick to win Best Picture.
Over the past eight months, Anora has enjoyed the first-place position in our rankings for most of the time, aside from when The Brutalist briefly soared to the top after dominating the Golden Globes. Anora reclaimed the top spot following its victories at the Producers Guild, Directors Guild, and Writers Guild. Meanwhile, Conclave has ascended to its highest position yet on our Best Picture chart, at No. 2, following huge wins at BAFTA and Screen Actors Guild.

This meant that Demi Moore, long considered the favorite to win for her work in The Substance, ended up losing out. In other categories, Adrian Brody won Lead Actor for his work in Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, while Kieran Culkin picked up his expected trophy for A Real Pain and Zoe Saldaña overcame the Emilia Pérez controversy to win for Supporting Actress.
Anora also won awards for Original Screenplay and Editing, while Conclave picked up a win for Adapted Screenplay and Dune: Part Two was recognized for Sound and Visual Effects. The Brutalist also won for Cinematography and Score,...

“Emilia Pérez” seemed like the definitive Best Picture frontrunner at that time, cleaning up with 13 nominations. Over the past two decades, the Academy Awards have been in a constant state of flux: There are now 10 best picture nominees instead of five, the membership has grown (and diversified) by more than 50% in that time, streaming releases now routinely vie for the top prize. Amid all that change, one constant remains: For 20 years, U.K.-based Shorts International has been working with the short film nominees to get their work seen around the country. The theatrical audience for those releases grows each year, to the point that the “2025 Oscar Nominated Short Films: Live Action” package (which just crossed $3 million at the box office) is on track to outgross even best picture nominee “Nickel Boys.”

Ryan Reynolds has proven that his films bring people to the theater. His third Deadpool installment, Deadpool & Wolverine, was the biggest live-action film of 2024 and the second-highest-grossing title of the year.
However, even with his gross, Reynolds didn't score the highest paycheck of the year. Forbes officially released the new top 10 for the highest-paid actors of 2024, which includes 9 actors and an actress. While Reynolds didn't top the chart, he was a close second, with only $3 million behind his 2020 competition.

This year’s Best Picture nominees include a three-hour American epic about an architect, a blockbuster adaptation of a popular Broadway show, a gonzo body horror film about aging in Hollywood, and a Spanish-language French musical crime drama. That is not to even mention the pair of wildly different Timothée Chalamet-starring films that made it onto the 2025 Best Picture slate, or the sex worker dramedy that has been an Oscar frontrunner since May of last year.
On paper, it is hard to discern just how this year’s Best Picture nominees stack up against each other. So, here they all are, ranked by their Rotten Tomatoes scores.

This year’s Academy Awards race has been one of the most unusually chaotic in recent memory, as controversies have seemingly touched all major contenders. Beyond the obvious crisis regarding the offensive nature of “Emilia Perez,” there has been discourse about the shocking ending of “Conclave,” the depiction of sex workers in “Anora,” the Israeli politics of “The Brutalist,” the subtle (or lack thereof) message of “The Substance,” the unusual filmmaking techniques in “Nickel Boys,” the bland visuals of “Wicked,” and the Best Picture snubs for “Sing Sing” and “A Real Pain.” Nonetheless, a strong crop of contenders means that this year’s ceremony won’t be dull. It’s also a strong sign that the Oscars have selected a great host in Conan O’Brien, a veteran of television and giant movie fan who is sure to remind audiences what they are celebrating.
