Bilbo and company are forced to engage in a war against an array of combatants and keep the Lonely Mountain from falling into the hands of a rising darkness.
When Tauriel and Legolas arrive in Gundabad, and she questions him about what is beyond the fortress, he answers: "An ancient enemy". This enemy is the Witch-King of Angmar, leader of the Nazgul. Angmar was the kingdom that existed beyond Gundabad. The word means "house of iron".
You are changed, Thorin! The Dwarf I met in BagEnd would never have gone back on his word! Would never have doubted the loyalty of his kin!
When Legolas is running up the hill with Tauriel he has no quiver but when the camera cuts up to a close-up of him, the quiver is back on his back.
The closing credits are accompanied by sketches of people/locations from across the Hobbit trilogy.
2015 Extended Edition Blu-ray contains twenty minutes additional footage, including more graphic violence, increasing the run-time to 164 minutes. Due to the extra amount of violence, this version has been rated R by the MPAA.
