The actual Berlin Marathon has never finished at the Olympiastadion. The first marathons in the 1970s were held in the Grunewald forest. From 1981 to 2002 the finish line was at Kurfürstendamm, since 2003 it has been at the Brandenburg Gate.
Paul Averhoff enters the Berlin Marathon only a few weeks before the event actually takes place. At this point of time, no further entry would have been allowed, not even a Good for Age entry, as suggested by the film as runners have to apply for this well in advance (usually around 11 months before when the normal registration (now a ballot) is opened). The Good for Age entry for a male runner of 60 years or older would be 3 hours 25 minutes, not 2 hours 40 minutes, as stated in the film.
