DreamWorks Animation is taking a page out of Disney’s remake book. The animated film franchise “How to Train Your Dragon” will receive a new live action film from Universal Pictures, set for worldwide release on March 14, 2025.
The film will be written and directed by Dean DeBlois, the filmmaker behind the three animated “How to Train Your Dragon” films released between 2010 and 2019. It will be DeBlois’ live action narrative film debut, after directing the “Dragon” trilogy, Disney’s beloved 2002 animated feature “Lilo & Stitch,” and 2007 documentary “Heima.”
Based loosely on the book series by Cressida Cowell, the “How to Train Your Dragon” franchise is set in mythical Berk: a viking village where the residents train to fight and kill attacking dragons. Main character Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel in the original movies) is the awkward outcast son of chieftain Stoick (Gerard Butler), and struggles to prove himself worthy of serving as a warrior for the village.

Here's our first look at Netflix's How To Train Your Dragon spin-off, Dragons: Race To The Edge, out this June...
Not content with just co-creating shows that expand the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Netflix also have their hand in building the world surrounding DreamWorks’ How To Train Your Dragon movies.
Of course, Cartoon Network have already offered us Dragons: Riders Of Berk and Dragons: Defenders Of Berk, but Netflix are now taking over the reigns with what they’re assuring us is an ‘all new’ series (interestingly, there’s no mention of the other shows in their press release).
We got our first glimpse at their new series – dubbed Dragons: Race To The Edge – earlier this week. See it for yourself here…
In favour of a binge-watching viewing style, all 13 episodes of Dragons: Race To The Edge will land online on Friday the 26th of June.

Spin-offs are the new sequels. Case in point, instead of continuing his overarching story with a How to Train Your Dragon 4 after the series' third installment, Collider reports director Dean DeBlois is keener on spinning off the How to Train Your Dragon franchise to include other tales. DeBlois gave no indication what those tales might, er, entail, but let's step back for a moment and examine the trend Hollywood is forging here. In an effort to expand the worlds created within their most popular blockbusters, studios aren't simply using the same characters to tell new stories, they are producing films and television shows to broaden those worlds' scopes and increase the amount of the stories that can be told within them. Aside from storytelling, and more importantly I'd argue, this is done to benefit the bottom line, because Hollywood is a business, first and foremost. Just look at Marvel's Cinematic Universe,...

It's 1994, and aspiring filmmaker Kerry Conran sits down with his Macintosh IIci to begin work on a short film that's a throwback to the buccaneering adventure serials of the '30s and '40s. In those post-Jurassic Park days, computer-generated visual effects technology was still in its infancy, but Conran, a former CalArts student, saw the potential to tell a story he'd dreamed about. After four years of painstaking work with blue screen and his already-obsolete Mac, he fashioned a black and white teaser trailer for The World of Tomorrow.
Alongside Conran for the entirety of the journey was his brother Kevin Conran, who served as production and costume designer on both the short and eventual feature film. Speaking to Digital Spy from his home in California, Kevin recalled the lightbulb moment when his brother first pitched him the idea.

On September 19th, 20th Century Fox will unveil the highly anticipated The Maze Runner and according to early numbers, director Wes Ball’s movie is on track for a $30 million opening when it bows next weekend.
Based upon the best-selling novel by James Dashner, when Thomas wakes up trapped in a massive maze with a group of other boys, he has no memory of the outside world other than strange dreams about a mysterious organization known as W.C.K.D. Only by piecing together fragments of his past with clues he discovers in the maze can Thomas hope to uncover his true purpose and a way to escape.
One of the most popular soundtracks Sony Music has released this year, the original movie score is from American film composer and conductor John Paesano.
Originally from Detroit, Michigan, Paesano initially studied classical music with composition professor Sally Dow Miller of Conservatoire de Paris.

One of the most popular soundtracks Sony Music has released this year, the original movie score is from American film composer and conductor John Paesano.
Originally from Detroit, Michigan, Paesano initially studied classical music with composition professor Sally Dow Miller of Conservatoire de Paris.

DreamWorks Animation on Tuesday reported a net loss of $15.4 million, or 18 cents per share, much wider than analysts had expected as How to Train Your Dragon 2 awaits release in several significant international territories, including China, Spain and Italy. Dragon 2, CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg said Tuesday, "will be a highly profitable film for the company and DreamWorks Dragons will remain a very valuable franchise for many years to come." While Dragon 2 has made $428 million worldwide so far, it contributed only $2.6 million in feature film revenue during the second quarter. The more bullish

Shortly after announcing she would be ending her talk show Chelsea Lately on E!, Chelsea Handler announced a deal with Netflix to produce a new talk show.
Deadline reported last Thursday that Handler’s new show would begin in 2016 and would include a traditional format of Handler’s topical commentary and guest interviews, but no details have yet been revealed about the show’s format.
The lack of specific details suggests that Netflix and Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos aren’t showing all their cards in their hand.
If you’re Netflix and your goal is to be a major player in TV, your programming has to run the gamut of all TV has to offer. So far Netflix has done a remarkable job of attracting talent and buzz, be it in the sheer cultural significance of shows like House of Cards or Orange is the New Black and the enormous hype,...

Remember when we were growing up? We were Lucky if we got a decent animated film once a year in the ’80s and we spent most of our Saturday mornings watching total junk that now passes as nostalgia. We can say that music, film, or even literature was better when we younger. Animation? No way. Just take a look at four recent releases of the animated form that perfectly show the breadth and remarkable quality of the medium (and, yes, animation is a “form,” not a “genre.”)
The two best animated films of 2014 happen to come out on the same day on Blu-ray, tomorrow, June 17, 2014. This weekend's battle of the sequels was supposed to be close, with nearly every pundit giving "How to Train Your Dragon 2" a slight edge over "22 Jump Street." To some experts, it wasn't even going to be close, with the cartoon expected to earn as much as $70 million, contrasted with about $50 million for the action comedy.
Well, it wasn't close, but Father's Day weekend ended with estimates of $60.0 million for "Jump Street" and just $50.0 million for "Dragon 2." This even though "Dragon 2" is playing on nearly 1,000 more screens than "Jump Street."
Why did nearly everyone overestimate the prospects for "Dragon 2" and underestimate those for "Jump Street"? Here are some possible reasons the two rival sequels fared as they did.
Animation is trending downward. A lot of folks thought "Dragon 2" would do well because there's no Pixar movie to compete against this summer. That's true, but cartoon features, from "Mr. Peabody & Sherman" to "Rio 2,...

DreamWorks Animation comes up with a sequel to cherish, as How To Train Your Dragon 2 firmly hits the mark. Here's our review.
In a market where the turnaround for sequels is so quick, it feels like it's been a long time since Hiccup and Toothless first arrived on the big screen. How To Train Your Dragon was the film that really made people sit up and pay attention to DreamWorks Animation again after a string of Shrek sequels and tacky celebrity-led reference-paloozas.
By our reckoning, that makes How To Train Your Dragon 2 the most anticipated animated feature of the year by some distance. Young fans will have had the animated series Dragons: Riders Of Berk to tide them over, but assuming that many of us who loved the first film might not have got around to the series, we've been eager to see where the story goes next.

We recently heard that Netflix was planning on resuscitating The Magic School Bus for a new set of modernized episodes, and now news has broken that the streaming giant is further expanding its programming for children with a new original series by the name of Dinotrux.
Based on Chris Gall’s award-winning book series, Dinotrux follows “the adventures of two unlikely best friends as they navigate the mechanical domain ruled by creatures including Tyrannosaurus Trux, Scraptors and Tow-a-constrictors.” It’s set to feature hybrid dinosaur-construction characters who will work to build with and battle one another for three seasons.
Dinotrux is just the latest show that’s part of Netflix’s huge deal with DreamWorks Animation for 300 hours of original programming inspired by characters from the studio’s most successful properties. DreamWorks’ Turbo Fast launched last year on the streaming service, and future collaborations between Netflix and the animation studio...

It has been five years since Hiccup befriended Toothless and brought peace between the Vikings of Berk and the dragons in How to Train Your Dragon. Now they're back for an adventure with new villains, increased stakes, and of course, bigger dragons in How to Train Your Dragon 2.
All of the original voice cast returns in this sequel by writer/director Dean DeBlois (Lilo & Stitch), and they are joined by Cate Blanchett, Djimon Hounsou (Amistad) and Kit Harington (Game of Thrones). The characters are already well established by the 2010 film as well as two seasons of the Dreamworks Dragons TV series that continued their story, but this film is almost entirely about Hiccup and Toothless, leaving the rest of their friends largely in the background.

Nominations for the 41st Annual Annie Awards were announced and "Frozen" and "Monsters University" led the pack with 10 nominations each. "Despicable Me 2" and "The Croods" followed closely with 9 noms each.
I am rooting for "Frozen" to win! It's a return to form to what Disney does best -- affecting fairy tale with memorable musical numbers. "Monsters University," on the other hand, was bland. The film bored me on second viewing.
Steven Spielberg will receive the Winsor McCay Award for career achievement at the awards ceremony happening on Saturday, Feb. 1, at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus. Patrick Warburton will serve as host.

Can’t say that the studio had a good quarter, but Wall Street is all about expectations and on that score it looks Ok with shares up 7.8% post market. DreamWorks Animation generated $10M in net income, down 58.8% compared with last year, on revenues of $154.5M, -17%. Analysts expected revenues to come in at $140.3M. Earnings at 12 cents a share also beat expectations for a penny. The company says it will begin to report its numbers for four segments: feature films, TV series and specials, consumer products, and other. The feature film unit generated $120.7M in revenue and $55.4M in gross profit. Library titles contributed the most, with $52.2M in revenues. Rise Of The Guardians came next with $42.4M, mostly from worldwide pay TV. Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted kicked in $10.9M, followed by the summer release Turbo with $6.4M, and 2011′s Puss In Boots with $4.8M. The TV operation...

Trance Eh, Trance was a film that felt like it thought it was more clever than it actually is and I really have no desire or need to see it again. I had little to say when I wrote my review back in April and I have even less to say about it now. You can read my theatrical review right here.
Welcome to the Punch Hey, it's a double dose of James McAvoy, though unlike Trance, I haven't seen Welcome to the Punch but I'd be up for giving it a spin as it seems like a perfect at-home kind of film. Here's the plot: Former criminal Jacob Sternwood is forced to return to London from his Icelandic hideaway when his son is involved in a heist gone wrong. This gives detective Max Lewinsky one last chance to catch the man he has always been after. As they face off,...

DreamWorks Animation’s “revolutionary” collaboration with Netflix is opening up unique opportunities for actors. In February the video-on-demand service announced it had partnered with the studio to produce its first original series for kids. “Turbo,” a comedy about a garden snail’s quest to become the fastest snail in the world, is set to premiere in theaters July 17 and then as an animated series called “Turbo: F.A.S.T.” in December on Netflix. When the deal was announced, Jeffrey Katzenberg, DreamWorks Animation’s CEO, said the company was “thrilled to be part of the television revolution.” The studio used its series-feature development model before with its “Dragons” franchise. In that case, many of the original cast members from the feature “How to Train Your Dragon” and its sequel, including Jay Baruchel, America Ferrera, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, reprised their roles on the animated series “Dragons: Riders of Berk,” which airs on Cartoon Network.

It’s been three years now since Hiccup and Toothless brought dragons back to the big screen, with almost exactly one more to go before they are set to return with How To Train Your Dragon 2.
While Cartoon Network’s Dragons: Riders Of Berk helped to fill the gap, it was frankly no substitute for the utterly cinematic scale of the first film. Now, however, in time for the theatrical release for DreamWorks Animation’s Turbo, a trailer has finally landed for the sequel.
Reuniting Jay Baruchel, writer-director Dean DeBlois and composer John Powell, the sequel takes us back to Berk five years after the events of the first movie. Now a teenager, Hiccup uncovers a wider conflict between humans and dragons, once again finding himself at the centre of the feud.
The trailer, however, is light on plot, instead focusing on the forbidden friendship which made How To Train Your Dragon...

I really don't put much stock in the International Animated Film Society's 2013 Annie Awards, which is why I didn't rush to report on their results on Saturday. One year Disney and Pixar boycott the event, feeling there was an unfair advantage paid to larger contributing sponsors, DreamWorks being the primary example. So with such a nasty stench over the event what good does it do to pay it much mind? That said, I'll be brief in mentioning Wreck-It Ralph topped Saturday night's winners with five awards, including Best Animated Picture. The awards have something like a 75% streak when it comes to helping predict the eventual Oscar winner for Best Animated Feature and as the days have gone on, it's looking more and more like Ralph will be this year's winner (see my predictions here). Pixar's Brave, Laika's ParaNorman and DreamWorks' Rise of the Guardians each took home two awards in lesser,...
