Giant alien creatures spread to the Middle East in the sequel Monsters: Dark Continent. Here's Ryan's review...
Giant bioluminescent space creatures dominated the horizon but not the plot in Gareth Edwards’ breakthrough film, Monsters. Shot run-and-gun style by Edwards and a tiny crew, Monsters was an unusual blend of road-trip drama with light touches of sci-fi; its focus was the growing friendship between a photograph journalist (Scoot McNairy) and his boss's daughter (Whitney Able) travelling across a Central America ravaged not so much by the title’s Lovecraftian kaiju but by a military intent on keeping them well away from American soil.
Monsters’ success saw Edwards move to Hollywood, where he’s so far headlined the daddy of all kaiju movies, Godzilla, and now set to head up another pop culture giant - the Star Wars spin-off, Rogue One. This left production company Vertigo with a potential franchise on its hands,...

With Monsters: Dark Continent out in UK cinemas this weekend, director Tom Green talks to us about filming in the desert, Misfits and more.
In 2010, British director Gareth Edwards made a huge splash with his feature debut Monsters, a road trip drama with giant monsters stalking around in the background. It was an atmospheric movie that made ingenious use of its low budget; Monsters' success led to Edwards departing for Hollywood, where coveted franchises like Godzilla and Star Wars awaited.
Five years later, and director Tom Green brings us Monsters: Dark Continent, an entirely new story set in the same world as the first movie. A decade after a Nasa probe crashed in Mexico, bringing the giant monsters to Earth, their lumbering threat has spread to the Middle East. The Us Airforce is dispatched to bomb the creatures to prevent their spread, while on the ground, American troops try...

Before Godzilla, there was Monsters — director Gareth Edwards’ critically-acclaimed 2010 movie about the invasion of Earth by a race of giant, tentacled behemoths. This month, in the wake of Edwards’ success resurrecting the iconic Japanese monster, his own beasties are making their own comeback in Monsters: Dark Continent. With Edwards busy not only on the next installment of the Legendary’s Godzilla franchise, but also his upcoming Star Wars gig, he only served as executive producer on this follow-up, with directorial duties handled by Tom Green, known for his work on British television series Misfits and Blackout. There has been a lot of talk this week about "Godzilla," and in particular, how the big budget monster movie actually doesn't have all that much of the titular lizard in the actual movie. At least not until the third act, and even then... But for those that saw Gareth Edwards' debut film "Monsters," it's no surprise, as that low budget thriller also kept the creature at bay (though with arguably more satisfying results once it was revealed). Anyway, a sequel to "Monsters" is on the way, but Edwards is only executive producing with a whole fleet of people ready to bring more scares. Tom Green ("Misfits," "Blackout") gets behind the camera for this Jay Basu penned story which now reorients the focus to the Middle East, where the U.S. military is confronting another "infected zone." And basically, it's a lot of monsters emerging from the sand with...

Though not a household name yet – the future is looking exceedingly bright for young British actress Olivia Cooke, who stars as Hammer’s latest heroine, Jane Harper, in The Quiet Ones.
Turning in a wonderful performance, the young actress discusses the fun the actors – including Jared Harris and Sam Claflin – had off-set and how they’d put each other off mid-scene. She also tells us what scares her in real life, why she doesn’t want to move to Hollywood – and the reasons behind her mum wishing she’d just taken a role in Coronation Street instead.
Your portrayal is intense – did you ever feel like that depth of character might affect you in the long term?
No. We all had so much fun off camera. We were always laughing, which is really bad. Jared would make me crack up every time. We’d be shooting a séance and holding...

Now that Dexter has finished its run, Showtime is replacing it with another creepy series. Instead of a serial killer, this one will feature well-known figures from gothic literature, including Dracula and the Frankenstein Monster.
Penny Dreadful is an upcoming psychosexual horror TV series, produced by Sam Mendes. It will be much like a cross between the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Dark Shadows, taking place in the late 1800s, just before the turn of the century. The show will feature some iconic figures from gothic literature, including Dr. Frankenstein, (Harry Treadaway), and his monster, along with Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney) and figures from the novel “Dracula”. The brief teaser trailer also hints at appearances from a werewolf.
The show will feature a cast of original characters, as well. Josh Hartnett (30 Days of Night, Black Dahlia, Lucky Number Slevin, Black Hawk Down) will play Ethan Chandler, a brash, daring man...

While "Monsters" helmer Gareth Edwards has taken a huge leap from his tiny breakout film, directing next year's massive "Godzilla," the success of his eerie creature feature is something producers have been unable to leave behind. And so of course, no time has been wasted in mounting a sequel to "Monsters"—bearing the foreboding title "Monsters: The Dark Continent"—and though filming only got underway this past spring, we already have a teaser trailer to hint at what's in store. The follow-up (dubbed a "continuation") has swapped out Edwards for first-time feature filmmaker and TV regular Tom Green ("Misfits," "Blackout"), and the script from Jay Basu ("The Dinosaur Project," "Fast Girls") is set a few years after the original, with the U.S. military in the Middle East confronting another "infected zone." Johnny Harris ("Snow White & The Huntsman," "Welcome To The Punch"), Sam Keeley ("What Richard Did") and Joe Dempsie ("Skins,...

In 2010, Gareth Edwards’ film Monsters was released to mostly good reviews. People were excited about this shoestring budget monster movie which made a little over four million overseas against a 500k budget.
A little over two years later, Edwards is now filming Godzilla.
Currently, a sequel to Edwards’ 2010 film entitled Monsters: Dark Continent, has begun principal photography in Jordan, where filming will take place for five weeks, followed by one week of filming in Detroit. Special thanks to Screen Daily for the scoop.
Whereas the first film concerned a journalist leading a tourist across the dangerous path to the Us border, the second film will concern a mass infection of the monsters globally that that the Us military struggles to combat.
The production company behind the original Monsters will produce the sequel, alongside production and management company 42.
