The Lovable, Horrible Sarah Jo Pender
lavatch26 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The film title is "She Made Them Do It," suggesting that Sarah Jo Pender coerced women in prison to assist her in her escape and her subsequent struggle to evade the long arm of the law on the outside. But the interpretation of Pender's character by the filmmakers is enormously sympathetic and implies that Pender's associates were getting something in return, rather than being forced.

Yet another choice of the filmmakers was to portray Pender's likely innocence of the crime of murdering two people for which she was convicted and sent to prison. Until a brief "alternative" flashback clip at the end, it was clear that Pender asked her boyfriend to request that a couple of his friends to leave their home and he killed them. To this day, the real Sarah Jo Pender maintains her innocence.

Pender made America's Most Wanted television show as the master manipulator and a predator, whose victims "end up dead or in jail." But the film portrays a savvy and even sensitive Pender, who uses her intellect to help her fellow inmates understand the law. The most moving relationship is with a young hooker who was separated from her children for acts of solicitation. Pender helps reunite a mom with her kids.

A limitation of the film was in the depiction of the U.S. Marshall who became obsessed with the Pender case and tracked her down like the unscrupulous Inspector Javert pursuing Jean Valjean in "Les Miséerables" for the crime of stealing a loaf of bread. It is nearly impossible to watch "She Made Them Do It," and not root for the Sarah Jo Pender in the film, as well as for the real Sarah Jo languishing in solitary confinement in an Illinois prison to this day.

Miss America's Most Wanted
wes-connors8 July 2014
Beautiful Purdue University student Jenna Dewan-Tatum (as Sarah Jo Pender) is outraged when boyfriend Greyston Holt (as Rick) invests her tuition money in a drug deal. The most sober member of a frothy foursome, Ms. Dewan-Tatum orders Mr. Holt to get rid of their roommates – then, she goes for a walk. When Dewan-Tatum returns, the other couple has been shot. Dewan-Tatum is found guilty of double murder and sentenced to 110 years in prison. This is how "She Made Them Do It" begins, but how it ends is unclear. During the running time, we are made to think the opening events did not happen as screened. Although we are informed this is "based on a true story," the truth appears to have escaped...

Dewan-Tatum's character is described as a "female Charles Manson." Yet, she either does or doesn't commit the crime according to the moment you happen to be watching. Sexy and attractive for writer Gary Tieche and director Grant Harvey, Dewan-Tatum wastes no time in dropping her panties for the camera. She also hints at including both genders in bed, engaging the viewer. It's nice to see clean and sober Mackenzie Phillips (as Jamie Long) among her prison girlfriends. Given the use of "America's Most Wanted" and the fact that she was convicted, the way filmmakers seem to glamorize the character may be considered unfortunate – but that TV program and this film are selling crime as entertainment, after all.

Intriguing - did she make them do it?
phd_travel18 June 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This is a fascinating true life movie about Sarah Pender a convicted murderer who escaped from prison and was recaptured. Her boyfriend killed his roommates but she claims she had nothing to do with it. She was however found guilty as being behind the killing. She managed to escape from prison with the help of friends in and out of prison and was recaptured after a tip off from a viewer of America's Most Wanted.

It's interesting because you don't know for sure if she is a murderer or not. Was she a victim of just having the wrong boyfriend and friends or was she a manipulative murderer? It seems crazy to have killed the room mates in such a way. If she was innocent it's a terrible injustice. But whatever it is she is obviously an intelligent person who had quite an ability to make loyal friends and influence people as she managed to get help escaping from prison.

Jenna Dewan Tatum shows she is quite a good actress playing the enigmatic character quite well.

Worth a watch. One of life's mysteries.

Totally predictable, shallow, dull
eurograd7 February 2015
'She Made Them Do It' is a bland, uninspiring and entirely predictable movie.

I'm usually open-minded towards lower budget productions, and I can get past some consequences of a tight production resource list and a less experienced cast, as long as the story is compelling and the final cut interesting.

This is no such case, though. Characters are incredibly shallow, editing is off-the-mark, and the whole movie looks just a random collage of lines and scenes I'm sure I've been before, elsewhere. Actors feel like they are not comfortable with cameras at all.

Not bad. Enjoyable.

This movie is worth watching. It's no 'Prison Break' or 'Orange is the new black', but it's enjoyable. Sarah gets sentenced life in prison for a crime she says she didn't commit. It's an ongoing movie. I never found it boring. And if you're not excited about the story, you can just enjoy the beautiful Jenna Dewan Tatum! I actually find it weird that there is no bigger audience for this film... Must say I started watching with absolutely no expectations what so ever. So, maybe that's also a reason why I enjoyed it... I mean, only 600 votes? It's like no one has ever heard of this movie. Then I read the other reviews and they weren't great either. But the girlfriend insisted. And I don't regret it. I'm sure you'll have a nice time watching. It's not as low budget or awful as people are saying. It deserves more credit for sure. Enjoy!

Sarah Jo Pender Is Innocent!
BreanneB27 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I CANNOT be anymore clear about that. None of the evidence that she was convicted on makes any sense whatsoever. The prosecutor who put her behind bars and used to refer to her as "a female Charles Manson" even now admits he made a mistake. He is now helping to get her out.

Besides the great acting, this movie is so cheesy it stinks to the bowels of bloody hell. It is also has a complete choppy sense of direction, is inaccurate, cheap production, bad script. Also, the arrest takes place within just ten minutes from the beginning of the movie. They could have waited a little longer.

I only give this movie three out of yen stars because the only thing good about it is the acting.

Master Manipulator and Mistress For Hire
Ed-Shullivan4 March 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Not a particular intriguing movie. It may have been based on a true series of events, but I found the acting to be very much typical of what you would find in most made for TV movies. Specifically very canned performances and actors following a script to get through a tight timeline to complete the picture with little time to do retakes to get the scene right. Jenna Dewan-Tatum (don't you just hate the number of actresses who attempt to separate themselves from other actresses by combining both parents surnames?) who is a lot more attractive than the real Sarah Jo Pender, portrays the woman who partnered with her boyfriend to murder their two roommates. Sarah ends up going in to Rockville Prison Indiana where she begins a crusade to get out at all costs.

Sarah does not think twice about manipulating anyone, and everyone who she thinks can help her escape prison, since the courts are not willing to overturn her original conviction. Sarah will sleep with women or men to get them to help her escape from prison. Eventually she sleeps with one of the guards and wins his confidence to help her escape. She then turns to prostitution to secure a safe place to stay while she is on the run from the law. The movies portrayal of Sarah is a bit ridiculous in that she is portrayed as a genius who plays a para-legal and assists a fellow convict to keep custody of her three daughters away from her Aunt and Uncle.

Eventually Sarah Jo Pender is featured on John Walsh's America's Most Wanted and her John realizes who she really is but he chooses not to turn her in to the law. Instead he agrees to get her a job and an apartment and he agrees to pay her cash working in the factory that he owns. Again Sarah is portrayed as a genius accountant who is shown saving her new lover's business from an embezzler accountant. Go figure? She ends up being a drug dealer, con artist, manipulator and killer with a penchant for handling child custody battles and multi million dollar businesses from swindling accountants.

Marshall Sean Holland who is hunting her down catches up with her last John whose name is Bob, and played by actor Andrew Airlie. Marshall Sean Holland puts the screws to businessmen Bob and lets him know that harboring a murderer and escaped convict could put him in jail. The next thing you see is Sarah being arrested and back behind bars where she is currently in isolation and her earliest release date is when she turns 75 years old.

Is she a victim of circumstances or a master manipulator? I think the latter. I give this made for TV movie a 4 out of 10. I don't think you will miss much if you pass on this one.

Boring boring boring

This is so unbelievable you want to change channels. The barbie doll villain is just awful in this. I wonder where she gets the money for all the makeup she wears? Also Mackenzie Phillips is wasted in this silly movie. I like Phillips, but most of the other performers were terrible. Jenna Dewan Tatum tries but she's just not strong enough to carry a leading role. I found her a bit too amateurish in her acting. Perhaps in another vehicle where she doesn't have to act but just look pretty. I did not feel compassion for any of the characters. Just sorry Mackenzie wasting her talents in this trash.

She Made Them Do It-Friendly Persuasion? **
edwagreen7 June 2014
Warning: Spoilers
She came across as a nice young woman victimized by a boyfriend and blamed for the killing of 2 people. Off to jail she went where she went out of her way to help people. Yet, she is called manipulative, cunning and quite dangerous. You just don't know what to believe regarding this true story.

When she feels that the criminal justice system has failed her in refusing to grant a new trial, she takes off with the help of others in prison. She is pursued by a law officer who becomes obsessed with her capture.

Everyone who she helped while in prison with them turns around and repays her.

The fact remains whether or not she committed the murder. This question is never answered and it isn't explained what's going on in the jail with those pills and chemicals.

I thought the warden would come off as some tough lady, but her part was never built up. Ditto for the black inmate who just never gets going.

Jenna Dewan Tatum's Name/Her Character In This Movie
CherCee1 May 2015
@wes-connors: Charles Manson didn't directly kill his victims, either (if it is how it is described and Sarah manipulated her boyfriend into killing their friends). Manson manipulated his 'family' members with drugs and sex to do his dirty work.

@edshullivan: Jenna-Dewan-Tatum's last name is her married name. When she married Channing Tatum, she added his last name to hers. Dewan-Tatum is not a mix of her parents' last names. A lot of women do add their husband's last names to theirs when they marry.
