  • It's so devastating that the Kyoto Animation studios was attacked by a disgusting human being yesterday. I can't get over this tragedy like 35 talented Kyoani employees lost their lives because of him.

I decided to watch Hyouka today because it was the first made-for-tv anime adaption the studio ever did and boy they did a great job on it. Now I have to say the storyline wasn't exactly the best but the whole anime was well done. The animation and voice actors really hit the spot of me wanting to watch more of the anime. When the teens go around the cherry blossom areas, man you'd honestly wish you were in Japan!

It's so hard for me to type a review like this, my thoughts and huge condolences go out to the victims families as well as their colleagues. It's a very sad time to lose a large group of people who have worked their butts off in supplying the best animation out there. May they rest in peace <3
  • I really like the work of Kyoto Animation. Unique and fantastic art style, perfect music and even more perfect stories. Hyouka almost has all of them. Or to be more precise, it had the potential to have all them.

The plot is nothing complex: Oreki Houtarou, our first main character is an energy-conservative guy, who has to join the 'Classics Club'. He meets our other main character, Chitanda Eru, who is tireless and very, very, very curious. Thanks to this ever-curious girl, Oreki is dragged into many mysteries and investigations, which is, of course, the complete opposite of the boy's lifestyle.

I have the obvious reasons why I like this anime. It's written at the first paragraph: it has the characteristics of Kyoto Animation's works. However, the thing I would consider the best in this anime is, the implementation of the story. Making a show about investigating mysteries can be pretty hard, especially because it can easily be boring and/or unnecessarily complex, especially at the slice of life genre. Luckily, Hyouka manages to remain interesting and entertaining, with the help of its well-written characters. The situations are somehow remarkable and down to earth at the same time. Hyouka is a school example of how to make a slice of life anime, which maintains the interest from the start till the end.

So what's the problem with it? The answer is simple: the length. Hyouka is an adaptation of a light novel series, so it still has stories to...adapt basically. However, there is a great chance that will never happen (unfortunatelly) for obvious reasons. Still, me and everyone who loved the show will wait patiently, if it ever gonna happen.
  • Let me say don't stop watching it by experiencing first or second episodes. You should comment it after completing whole episodes. I wasn't confident enough to watch this show at the very beginning. But it turns out to be an exceptional anime with slow paced scenes. Most of us might be expecting a lot from it, but the case is, only the patient ones will only enjoy Hyouka to the full extent. If you are Sherlock Holmes fan I highly recommend it.I HOPE FOR THE NEXT SEASON...
  • I've just watched this series in this New Year Day through an introduction of my sister, and I jumped right here after finishing it. The story is really great, maybe because I am an introverted person and I really find myself through the main character, Houtarou (not the investigate part, for sure :D). The way it got the viewers into the mysteries along with the series is just so exciting, though they are all just some a bit more-than-ordinary-stories that happened in a high- school student's everyday life, and all of their beautiful, innocent emotions. Also the work of art is just so good comparing to all manga anime I've watched. If you want to find sometime to relax and get some good-old-memories from your student time back, or even you are not, this is sure a good series to watch. Enjoy :)
  • "If I don't have to do it, I won't. If I have to do it, I'll make it quick." - Houtarou oreki
  • One of the best slices of life animes i have ever seen. The blue air hyouka with its sad yellow tone make its different from other slices of life animes. The protagonist :Oreki Houtarou with his motto of having peaceful school days become opposite to Eru Chitanda:The fool....Every scenes are so warm and lovely from the genres... Simply love this show<3
  • Although the mysteries of the anime are intriguing and I had a lot of fun following them and trying to solve them, over time, you realize that the anime suffers from the lack of a story line. The solving of the mysteries does not take the characters anywhere and does not evolve the plot, thus causing a certain lack of interest in continuing to watch.

If it wasn't for the beautiful art, the good opening and ending songs and the good character development, hyouka would be just another anime about the daily student life of its characters that I would pass by and wouldn't have finished watching, because, let's be honest, there are many similar anime of this type.
  • The anime is amazingly done by KyoAni you wont even thought for a second that it is of 2012 its a mystery anime thats shows how yoh connect dotes and all with lots of humour and little romance each sentense in the end and in between episodes posses a great deep meaning it really does hit the spot if you are looking for a diff anime than normal yet close to normal shounen

Hyouka 7.6 The low rateing is because the show wasn't that great it was pretty average on maybe it was more mystery than romance and it was a good predictable mystery to be honest the only thing that let me stick was honestly oreki he is cute and a pessimist and he just a cool chill dude that is what I really liked when he was the main charecter but June secitani definatly was something that was interesting but tell me this HOW you going to start with a mystery in episode 4 or 5 and then solve it around 7 or 8 that was sad honestly and the title of this anime is quite depressing so that's why the low rating not what I thought it was and not something I would recommend but maybe there are better ones idk lol.
  • Hyouka is a story about a high school boy who would rather not exert energy on everyday school life. However, after being urged to join the Classic Literature Club, but gets swept up in a girl's desire to investigate the simple parts of life. Hyouka revolutionizes the slice-of-life genre by diving deep into it's characters and pins down what makes them tick. No detail is left behind and every primary character is a changed person by the end of the series. The protagonist, Oreki, is a masterfully-crafted character and captures the sense of a apathetic high schooler perfectly. He also contrasts well with the other 3 main cast members who are very lively compared to him. As expected of Kyoto Animation, the animation is unparalleled. The musical score flawlessly mixes classical pieces with the up-beat ones. All in all, Hyouka is not only a well-oiled machine, but a innovative one at that. It's rare to see an anime have a plot so well-written while being consistent, two things which Hyouka does in stride. There is no doubt that anybody who watches this will become instantly attached to the Classic-Literature Club and their endeavors involving the everyday high school life.

In a way, Hyouka is about Oreki and his group of friend who solves mysteries together. How Oreki starts off very monotone and lazy and ends up being a lot more colorful. But the best way for me to describe it is a show about Orekis life which gets its life turned around by a curious who tries to understand people and herself, and how it affects his personality and life afterward. The reason why I'm reluctant to say anything about its mystery is because it isn't about that. The mysteries are there to make the characters form a bond, and then the characters do the rest. So in many ways, the series is a character-driven episodic show. Yes, it has mini-arcs, but most of the episodes are one-off mysteries that are used to develop the characters. So at the end of each mystery, the characters develop more and more and they get to learn more about themselves. Plus, if you're expecting a mystery show with a very complicated mystery, then you should change your expectations.

At the beginning of the show, we learn about Oreki and his view on life. "If I don't have to do it, I won't. If I have to do it, I'll make it quick." is a quote that effects everything in his life. His personality, his choices and even how he talks. His dull and monotone personality, how he chooses to do as little as possible in whatever scenario as possible and the short dialogue he has is all because of this. And it's all shown in the first scene, where we see Oreki walking through a cheerful crowd, while he has all the shadow on himself, really sticking out of the crowd. Then we meet Orekis friend Satoshi, who's the contrast to Oreki (or so it might seem at the beginning). He has the normal friend personality. Cracking jokes, energetic and is the self-proclaimed database. This is something we see as being a big insecurity of his later, and it makes him very realistic.

When Orekis sister tells him that the classic literature club is empty, he decides to join it. But to his disarray, a girl by the name of Chitanda is standing by the window. This is where she is first presented, and it gives you a good idea of what kind of character she is. She could be seen as a moeblob, just there to be cute. But she's a lot deeper in many ways.

The reason for her extreme curiosity that is shown in the series a lot of times, is because of her urge to understand people. Her urge to get a new perspective on something. So the mysteries gives her them in an interesting way. And they also show her parts of her that she didn't know about.

She also feels stuck in a one-wayed road. Where whatever she does, she'll always end on the same place. I won't say where though.

The fourth character we get introduced to is Ibara. She doesn't show a lot of imperfections, in the beginning, being smart, kind and having a fun personality. But again, when we get to learn more about her, we see that she gets very emotional when talking about something she is passionate about. She's also very insecure about other peoples opinion on her.

Even though I said that the anime isn't really about what's happening with the story, but how the characters develop. But the mysteries featured in the show are still very interesting. It could be about the most mundane thing there is (like why a door was locked when nobody locked it) but they would make it interesting because the conclusions are always something that you didn't think of, but they didn't feel out-of-nowhere, so you could come up with the conclusion by yourself with the small hints that you don't notice. And the way they ended it all was perfect for me. It keeps the same tone and doesn't feel too out-of-character. And it makes some characters even better in my opinion

And something that complimented the story was the visuals and the music. The music, though not very memorable, it reflected the mysterious tone of the show and doesn't take too much focus from the story. That way you don't notice the music, but it helps you get the emotion that the scene is trying to convey. And the art, ahhhhhhh the art. Honestly, I saw two scenes that had animation that felt weird, the rest was fantastic. The character designs were almost all great (Chitanda's character design isn't bad, but looks like many other Kyoto animation characters. her design didn't feel as uniques as the other characters), the style looked very pretty and the way they use color is amazing. Like how they compliment Orekis development by having a lot of the colors to be very dark and bland in the beginning and become more vibrant as Oreki develop into a more colorful person.

In the end, this show might not be for you. The pacing is quite slow and if you don't concentrate on what's happening, then you won't understand the appeal of the show. But if it sounds like something for you, then go for it. Cause it was great!

This is one of the few Well animated and well written anime I've watched So far .... If you are looking for A Slice of life Genre then look no more , The only Bad thing I'd say is there is no Season 2 yet(maybe).
  • Some of the best writing I have ever seen on TV to be frank, the pacing is just right and don't get me started on the soundtrack and animation quality. This is more than just the bright and flashy bravado we have grown to love from anime, oh no this is a true masterpiece.

In the literature 4 students including Oreki, Satoshi, Mayuka and the curious Eru all investigate mysteries about and behind the school. In the most extraordinary and exciting way and by also learning a bit of history behind them.

While this did take a while for me to watch (with everything that has been going on for the past 9 months) but in the end I am glad I finished it.

In my opinion it is one of those animes you need to have a lot of patience with to fully enjoy. As it does have a pace which is quite slow but eventually comes to a satisfying conclusion.

The animation and art style from Kyouta animation is excellent.

    Do check it out.

Please make another season pelase, i won't ask anymore:''''''(((
  • The design of the character is very interesting. The core of the work is to show the ignorant love between adolescent boys and girls and the process of inner change. The subtle emotions between the characters are still displayed in detail. The energy-efficient wood selection and the curiosity of Chianti Tian are gradually approaching and the character is slowly changing. The overall rhythm control is quite good. It also contains some thoughts about the times and society. The implicit expression adds a bit of literary and artistic flavor. The humorous elements added in the appropriate position make people laugh. The performance of painting can be described as the peak. The figuration of the reasoning part shows that the design is very careful, which makes the boring reasoning look interesting. The advertisement under the cherry blossom in the last episode is very beautiful. There are bright spots in the plot. I personally feel that the best thing is the content of Valentine's Day and the history of the classical part. But generally speaking, it mainly revolves around reasoning. There are some places where the design is not particularly reasonable, which makes people feel a bit forced to advance the plot. It is not natural enough. As a work with the development of character relations as the core, the proportion of each part of the plot should be balanced is somewhat unbalanced. But again, the performance is really invincible.

With its beautifully animated visuals, well-developed characters, and cleverly crafted mysteries, Hyouka stands out as a gem within the anime landscape.
