‘A Private Life’ Review: A Delightfully Paired Jodie Foster and Daniel Auteuil Escape Injury in a Messy but Pleasurable Genre Collision
Image
Caught between sophisticated comedy and silly fluff, between Hitchcockian mystery and zany amateur sleuth caper, A Private Life (Vie Privée) is a lot more fun than it probably deserves to be thanks to the disarming chemistry of its seasoned leads, Jodie Foster and Daniel Auteuil. Rebecca Zlotowski’s latest doesn’t have the intoxicating sun-kissed sensuality of An Easy Girl or the emotional complexity of Other People’s Children, her last two films. This one is too busy careening all over the tonal map for any of that. What it does have is the French director’s customary light touch; it’s chaos with charm.

Foster’s French — at least to these ears — sounds impeccable and this is her first feature in the language since 2004’s A Very Long Engagement. She jumps into it with a spiky vitality and an unexpected playfulness that buoy the movie as much as Zlotowski’s zippy direction.

Cobie Smulders & Thomas Sadoski To Star In Dramedy ‘Jill Takes A Break’ From Liz Cardenas
Image
Exclusive: Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother) has come aboard to star opposite Thomas Sadoski (The Newsroom) in Jill Takes a Break, a new comedic drama directed by Independent Spirit Award winner Liz Cardenas.

Written by Scott Rodgers, the film follows Jill (Smulders), a bartender in Long Beach who impulsively buys the dive bar she’s worked at for years — only to discover that owning the chaos isn’t the same as surviving it.

Attached to the project since its early development, Sadoski will play Jill’s longtime partner, Vaughn, and also serve in a producorial capacity. The film will be produced by Talon Entertainment, Driven Equation and Ten to the Six Pictures, with Steven Demmler and Sundance fellow Helena Sardinha (Satisfaction) also attached as producers. Rewind: ‘True Detective: Season 1’ Review
Image
I am 11 years late to this one, but watching True Detective: Season 1 has compelled me to try and squeeze some of these thoughts out of my brain. It is like trying to squeeze Pate through a plastic ketchup bottle hole. My thoughts are too meaty and chunky, and this is going to cause a huge mess.

Mild Spoilers.

True Detective aired on HBO, the historical home of quality US television. I always thought of their Show Oz as changing the game for quality long-format shows on TV, but likely the far more popular The Sopranos drowns that out. Reading on the internet, it seems that many people credit True Detective with being one of the first shows to bring Hollywood star power into a tight, 8 show format.

Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey star as our Detective duo who are tasked with investigating a ritualistic, folk murder in the deep South.

“If I never acted again, I wouldn’t really care”, Says $100M Rich Jodie Foster on Young Actors, From Her Hollywood Glass Palace
Image
It’s not uncommon for great actors to have an eye for great scripts, as the late John Cazale famously starred in five movies, and each one of them went on to earn an Oscar nod. Similar is the case with Jodie Foster, who is more keen toward working on stories that are compelling to her, instead of the payday.

However, barring major A-listers, for a substantial portion of working and aspiring actors, acting isn’t just an art form but a way to make ends meet, and unlike Foster, they can’t choose to be picky early on.

Jodie Foster expressed confusion with many young actors’ approach to acting Jodie Foster in The Silence of the Lambs | Credit: Orion Pictures

Having scored several prestigious accolades under her belt, Jodie Foster recently confessed that she’s “not really interested in acting just for the sake of acting”, which explains her illustrious filmography.

Jodie Foster: ‘Silence of the Lambs’ Filmmaker Jonathan Demme Is My ‘Favorite Feminist Director’
Image
Jodie Foster is remembering how much of a “feminist” filmmaker Jonathan Demme was. Demme directed Foster in 1992 Best Picture winner “Silence of the Lambs”; the “Philadelphia” and “Something Wild” director died in 2017.

When asked by Variety while promoting Cannes film “Vie Privée” about collaborating with female filmmakers, Foster pointed to how feminism is not bound by gender. “It’s hard for me to be in the business of saying, half my movies are going to be made by women or men or whatever. Shouldn’t it be a more instinctual choice?” Foster said. “You would hope that you’d be interested in the human being. I mean, Jonathan Demme on ‘Silence of the Lambs’ was my favorite feminist director.”

Foster continued, “That said, I think some sort of quota system is important when it comes to giving first-time filmmakers an opportunity. You need to start the process early so we all get the same opportunities.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms star assures fans that it's "a great show"
Image
Good news: HBO is adapting George R.R. Martin's Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas as a new show called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Set around 100 years before the events of Game of Thrones, it tells the story of a very tall knight named Ser Duncan the Tall and his diminutive, sassy squire Egg. There are no dragons or huge wars, just two people exploring the Seven Kingdoms having adventures. It's lighter in tone and smaller in scale than what fans are used to, and everything we've heard about it is very positive.

Bad news: while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was originally going to air on HBO and HBO Max this year, it recently got delayed into early 2026. We've still seen precious little of it, but the actors involved only have good things to say. That includes English actor Finn Bennett, who made an impression in...

Jodie Foster Embraces ‘Vie Privée’ Director as French Murder Mystery Gets 8-Minute Cannes Standing Ovation
Image
Jodie Foster, flashing a broad smile, embraced director Rebecca Zlotowski at the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday night as “Vie Privée” scored an impressive eight-minute standing ovation. The crowd cheered wildly for Foster even as the actress kept gesturing towards Zlotowski, as if reminding the audience that this was the filmmaker’s moment to bask in the applause. “Vie Privée” is an off-beat mystery about a psychotherapist who becomes convinced that her patient’s suicide was actually a murder — think of it as “Only Murders in the Building” with a dose of ennui.

The crowd for the film was certainly star-studded, a sign of the esteem in which Foster is held. Gael García Bernal and Alejandro González Iñárritu posed for pictures before the screening, while Scarlett Johansson strode the red carpet with her husband, Colin Jost. Johansson was accompanied by June Squibb, the 95-year-old star of her feature directorial debut,...

Jodie Foster on ‘Vie Privée’ in Cannes, What Trump Means for Female Directors and Why Turning 60 Led to Career Contentment: ‘There’s a Freedom’
Image
Jodie Foster can go years without making a movie.

“I’m picky,” she admits. “I’m not really interested in acting just for the sake of acting. It has to really speak to me.”

It’s a few hours before the Cannes premiere of “Vie Privée,” a French thriller that Foster, despite her natural aversion to performing, found impossible to resist. After meeting Rebecca Zlotowski, the French filmmaker who also wrote the script, Foster discovered they shared a passion for character development and narrative. And the story, which finds Foster playing a therapist who becomes convinced that her patient’s suicide is actually a murder, was too tangled and intriguing to turn down.

“Rebecca has this command of the intellectual world, as well as the emotional world,” the 62-year-old Foster says. “We think about cinema in the same way. She wanted to make sure that the audience was brought into...

Jurassic World Rebirth: Latest TV Spot Unleashes The Titanosaurus, Quetzalcoatlus, & Mosasaurus!
Image
Ahead of tomorrow's eagerly awaited new theatrical trailer for Jurassic World Rebirth, Universal has released another action-packed new TV spot, this time spotlighting some of the dinos that'll be at the center of the blockbuster sequel: the Titanosaurus, Quetzalcoatlus, and Mosasaurus.

As far as why Scarlett Johansson and her team will be seeking out these three monumental beasts, the synopsis revealed that she'll be tasked with retreiving DNA samples from the three most colossal creatures across land, sea and air, who in their DNA, hold the key to a drug that will bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind.

It's expected that the new trailer will be attached to screenings of Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning and Disney's live-action Lilo & Stitch this weekend, meaning it'll get maximum eyeballs as it kickstarts its full-fledged marketing blitz in June.

Despite stiff competition from superhero entries Superman and The Fantastic Four: First Steps,...

‘The Penguin’ Emmy submissions: Colin Farrell aims to complete his awards sweep after Golden Globe, Critics Choice, SAG victories
Image
HBO will submit four cast members from The Penguin for Emmy consideration, Gold Derby has confirmed.

Colin Farrell as Oswald "Oz" Cobb, aka the Penguin, is entering the Best Movie/Limited Series Actor category, as expected. Earlier this awards season, the Irish actor prevailed at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice, and Screen Actors Guild Awards for playing the villainous DC Comics character. A victory at the Emmys would complete his sweep of top awards. A former Oscar nominee for The Banshees of Inisherin (2022), this would be his first career Emmy bid.

Cristin Milioti as Sofia Gigante (née Falcone) is being submitted for Best Movie/Limited Series Actress. She won the Critics Choice Award for this role, but lost at the Golden Globes to Jodie Foster (True Detective: Night Country) and at the SAG Awards to Jessica Gunning (Baby Reindeer). Milioti could receive her first two career Emmy noms this year,...

'Superman's Nathan Fillion Says Dcu Green Lantern Role Is "Beyond My Wildest" Dreams
Image
Getting a role in a major comic book movie is a dream that a lot of actors have, especially when that role is as one of the members of the Justice League. But for Superman star, Nathan Fillion, it's a childhood dream come true. James Gunn's Superman (starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel) is technically Fillion's second time playing a member of the Green Lantern Corps, as the actor voiced Hal Jordan in several DC Animated Universe movies. But playing Guy Gardner will mark Fillion's live-action Green Lantern debut, and the actor can't believe he gets to wield a power ring in real life.

Nathan Fillion took to Instagram to share his joy at being cast as Guy Gardner in Superman, and the wider Dcu. "Being a part of the new Superman movie is a dream beyond my wildest," the actor wrote in a new post. Fillion...

Superman Director James Gunn Shares New Look At Ma & Pa Kent; Teases Lanterns' Sooner-Than-Expected Release
Image
DC Studios co-ceo and Superman writer/director James Gunn has capped off a busy week for the Dcu with a new look at Pruitt Taylor Vince and Neva Howell as the Dcu's Jonathan and Martha Kent.

We got a better idea of what to expect from the Man of Tomorrow's human parents in the new trailer, and this shot shows them both in Kent Farm alongside Gunn.

On Threads, the filmmaker was asked about a possible timeline for the Dcu. He responded, "As of now it's basically as the movies and shows come out - although of course some of these feature flashbacks - Creature Commandos, Superman, Peacemaker, Lanterns, Supergirl."

This appears to confirm that Lanterns will premiere on HBO Max before Supergirl (which now appears to have lost its Woman of Tomorrow subtitle) lands in theaters next June. That means the Green Lantern reboot will hit streaming in the...

Angelina Jolie Delivers Humanitarian Message at Chopard Dinner in Front of Quentin Tarantino, Cannes Jury: “None of Us Are Naive”
Image
Angelina Jolie is at the Cannes Film Festival, not with a film in the lineup but with official duties thanks to the festival’s longtime (and glamorous) sponsor, Chopard.

The Oscar winner agreed to serve as this year’s Chopard Godmother, a gig that saw her preside over Friday night’s A-list Trophée Chopard dinner at Carlton Beach and present trophies to an actor and actress anointed as next generational talent by a jury comprised of previous recipients of the esteemed festival honor. This year’s awards went to French actress Marie Colomb and breakout British star Finn Bennett, most recently seen in Alex Garland’s Warfare and opposite Jodie Foster in True Detective: Night Country.

The honors were doled out during what is always a glitzy ceremony attended by Cannes Film Festival president Iris Knobloch, general delegate Thierry Frémaux, Chopard co-president and artistic director Caroline Scheufele, members of the competition jury and A-list guests.

Warner Bros. Trolls Fans After Rebranding Max to HBO Max
Image
Word broke yesterday that Warner Bros. Discovery is changing the name of its streaming service from Max to HBO Max, and if that sounds familiar, it should. That was what the platform was first called when it launched in 2020. Fans have been having a lot of fun on social media making fun of Wdb since news of the change was announced, and the company seems fully aware of the irony, as it's gone so far as to troll people by taking some light-hearted jabs at itself.

Posting on X, the official HBO Max account (@hbomax) shared a clip from Game of Thrones of the moment when Jon Snow comes back to life. "What is dead may never die," the caption read, continuing: "Same app, new-ish name." The Max account (@streamonmax) changed its bio to say "These rebrands are trying to kill me." while also sharing a hilarious clip of celebrities like Conan O’Brien,...

Max's Hit Medical Drama With 95% Rt Score Is Coming to TNT
Image
Max's The Pitthas been one of the most successful TV shows in 2025. The series was highly acclaimed by critics -- so it is now getting a second viewing window on TNT.

Previously, HBO Max boss Casey Bloys indicated the show was on its way to TNT. Dungey wants to make it clear that The Pitt will be event television, something audiences won't be able to look away from once it gets going.

Jurassic World Rebirth: Scarlett Johansson Fights To Survive In New Photos From Upcoming Dino Sequel
Image
As part of their summer movie previews, Entertainment Weekly, ScreenRant, and Empire have shared new stills from Jurassic World Rebirth, offering a killer new look at the franchise's newest leading lady Scarlett Johansson, who plays covert operations expert Zora Bennett, doing her best to survive all kinds of dino carnage.

Aside from a handful of brief glimpses, the early images from the film reveal remarkably few dinosaurs—likely because the production is keeping the Distortus rex and any other mutant dinos on the island tightly under wraps, so we'll just have to strap in this Fourth of July for all kinds of mayhem.

With How to Train Your Dragon due out in theaters in June, it seems highly probable that a new trailer for Rebirth will be arriving online sometime before the end of this month as they begin to ramp up the marketing campaign for an epic Jurassic June.

“He shunned Hollywood”: The Marvel Star Who Left Taylor Sheridan Impressed, Is Starred in His Rival Western Show
Image
Before he joined the Marvel machine, this star had already attracted attention not just from fans, but from the Yellowstone mastermind Taylor Sheridan himself. But instead of riding into Sheridan’s Wild West, he ended up starring in a rival Western show that carved its own gritty path.

The twist: he wasn’t chasing fame. He pretty much ghosted Hollywood for a while, choosing character over clout. That quiet rebellion, paired with serious on-screen grit, left Sheridan seriously impressed. And even though he didn’t turn up for the Yellowstone universe, his presence in the Western genre left a mark loud enough to echo.

Mr Loverman, Shōgun, And Blue Lights Score At The BAFTA TV Awards 2025 — See The Full Winners’ List
Image
With awards season all but done and dusted, Oscars. Golden Globes, SAGs, and BAFTAs all having been dutifully doled out over the past few months, this evening saw the BAFTA TV Awards 2025 — hosted by Avengers: Doomsday's Alan Cumming and held at London's Royal Festival Hall — take centre stage for a night of red carpet walking and shiny statue giving. And during a telecast in which the two most nominated shows — Netflix stalker thriller Baby Reindeer and ITV drama Mr Bates Vs The Post Office — took home one award apiece, the likes of Mr Loverman, Shōgun, and Blue Lights all scored big wins in major categories.

On the night, Baby Reindeer's sole win saw Jessica Gunning's turn as Richard Gadd's crazed stalker Martha recognised in the Supporting Actress race, while Mr Bates Vs Post Office, which was elsewhere nominated in both Lead acting categories, took home the coveted accolade for Limited Drama.

BAFTA TV Awards Complete Winners: ‘Mr Bates Vs The Post Office’ & ‘Mr Loverman’ Win Big Prizes
Image
Mr Bates vs The Post Office and Mr Loverman were the big victors at the BAFTA TV Awards, meaning Baby Reindeer did not continue its dominant winning streak.

Hosted by The Traitors star Alan Cumming, the BAFTA ceremony took place in sparkling spring sunshine on the banks of the River Thames at London’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday.

The prizes were fairly evenly shared, but perhaps unsurprisingly, it was a notable night for Mr Bates vs The Post Office, the ITV series that dominated the UK ratings last year and fuelled a national conversation about injustices faced by innocent British postmasters, who were convicted of theft, fraud, and false accounting.

The series won Best Limited Drama, beating Baby Reindeer, which has been a darling of the awards season after cleaning up at the Emmys and Golden Globes. Jessica Gunning did, however, take home the prize for Best Supporting Actress for Baby Reindeer,...

BAFTA TV Awards 2025: Full Winners List and Key Highlights
Alan Cumming
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts presented its 2025 TV Awards at the Royal Festival Hall in London, with a wide spectrum of talent recognized across drama, comedy, factual, and children’s programming. Hosted by Alan Cumming, the event was broadcast on BBC One domestically and streamed on BritBox in the United States, continuing the Academy’s emphasis on broad accessibility for international audiences.

This year’s selections showcased both returning series and first-time contenders. Several winners have already seen cultural ripple effects across the UK media landscape. ITV’s Mr Bates vs the Post Office stood out not only for winning Limited Drama but also for earning the Special Award, recognizing ITV’s role in commissioning a project that helped catalyze national discussion. Based on a real-life miscarriage of justice, the series dramatized the experiences of sub-postmasters wrongly accused of theft and fraud, spurring public and political attention.

2025 BAFTA TV Awards: ‘Mr. Bates vs the Post Office’ and ‘Mr Loverman’ win big over ‘Baby Reindeer’ (full winners list)
Image
Mr Bates vs. the Post Office pulled off a victory over Netflix's Emmy-winning Baby Reindeer at the 2025 BAFTA TV Awards on Sunday. The ITV drama that dominated U.K. ratings last year tells the story of hundreds of innocent sub-postmasters and postmistresses who were wrongly accused of theft, fraud, and false accounting due to a defective It system.

However, it wasn't all bad news for Baby Reindeer. Emmy, Golden Globe, and SAG Award winner Jessica Gunning continued her impressive awards streak, scoring Best Supporting Actress, and bringing the limited series’ total to three wins, including writing and directing victories from the BAFTA TV Craft Awards on April 27.

Lennie James beat out the likes of Richard Gadd (Baby Reindeer) and Gary Oldman (Slow Horses) to win Best Actor for Mr Loverman, in which he plays an exuberant, closeted family man who wants to end his marriage and live with his best friend.

Image
As the Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster, Avengers: Doomsday, ramps up production, one of its actors shares a chilly behind-the-scenes video, potentially from the set. Star Anthony Mackie releases a cold-weather clip on location for his new project.

Image
Jason Ritter has confirmed that he'll be playing a comedic role in Lanterns.

The actor recently spoke to Forbes about a number of topics but briefly touched on his current work, which is portraying Billy Macon in HBO and Max's Lanterns.

Said Ritter, "We’ve shot four episodes so far and we’re about to start shooting episodes three and four. We’re doing it all a little out of order. The story is kind of jumping all around, but it’s been so fun and it’s a really well-written, really fun show. I’m just trying to fit into that world and maybe put a little silliness in there."

Clint Eastwood and Steven Spielberg are two legends who made their mark in the industry as prolific filmmakers who have crafted some of the most influential films of the past few decades. While Eastwood never collaborated with Spielberg as an actor, he has directed several projects under Spielberg’s production ventures.

One of the most underrated collaborations of the duo is Spielberg’s TV series Amazing Stories. The anthology show, which followed along the lines of The Twilight Zone, saw Eastwood direct one romantic horror episode starring Harvey Keitel and Sondra Locke, written by Spielberg. Waiting 3 Years for ‘Stranger Things’ Feels Criminal, Not Even ‘House of the Dragon’ Deserves That Much Time
Image
Yeah… there have been a lot of delays and problems within Hollywood for quite a few years due to a plethora of factors. Some were justified, while others could have been prevented, but the point is, it’s taking too long.

Stranger Things, which debuted in 2016, is currently developing its fifth and final season, but at the moment of writing… It’s 2025! The Netflix show has taken a total of 9 years to release 4 seasons, and some people are quite angry about it.

Stranger Things remained quite hidden for a while!

When the show debuted in 2016, there were no plans to make this series as grandiose and epic as it stands today. In 2016, Stranger Things was just a show set in the 1980s wherein kids got kidnapped and experiments went wrong.

The series, while being developed by the Duffer brothers, was called Project Montauk.

Finding Beauty in the Absurd: An Existential Reading of ‘American Beauty’ (1999)
Charles Chaplin
Is life a comedy or a tragedy? Artists from all over the world try to find the right answers to this age-old question. Kafka sees life as endless suffering, whereas Charlie Chaplin sees life as harsh and tries to create a good laugh about it. The question perhaps starts from the ‘fall of man,’ where Adam and Eve were banished from the Garden of Eden and exiled to Earth. Due to this, human life is perhaps inherently a tragic one—a life filled with suffering and sorrow. In season 1 of “True Detective,” the character Rust Cohle identifies it as the ‘tragic misstep in evolution.’ According to him, “We are creatures that should not exist, by natural law.”

But there may be something beautiful about this existence—an existence where we are able to be happy, but in absurd terms, just like Sisyphus in Greek mythology, who was eternally damned to...

Image
Exclusive: Ben Foster (Hell or High Water), Manny Jacinto (Freakier Friday), and Fiona Shaw (Bad Sisters) will topline The Stalemate, an absurdist Western comedy from first-time feature filmmaker Nicholas Arioli, who’s directing from his own script.

Currently in production in Santa Fe, New Mexico, The Stalemate focuses on a robber (Jacinto) and sheriff (Foster) who, out of bullets and far from town, must negotiate their way out of an absurd, unending chase in the Old West.

“I spent many years writing this completely absurd movie,” Arioli said, “and I’m honored to work with such an incredible team who are as excited as I am to bring it to life. The Stalemate is part wacky buddy comedy, part poignant Western elegy – and just straight up a ton of fun. We can’t wait to share it!”

‘Severance’s’ Ólafur Darri Ólafsson on Cooking and Crime in ‘Reykjavik Fusion,’ Hörður Rúnarsson on Breaking Away From Scandi Noir
Image
Led by “Severance” star Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, “Reykjavic Fusion,” one of the highest-profile competition contenders at France’s Canneseries, is described by executive producer Erik Barmack of Wild Sheep Content as “‘Breaking Bad’ meets ‘The Bear.’”

When protagonist Jónas, a gifted chef imprisoned supposedly for tax fraud, gets out and opens a restaurant backed by a crime lord, his life becomes a daily exercise in damage control, as his life spirals into crime.

All Jonas wants is to develop his passion for haute cuisine, featuring “Icelandic ingredients cooked Asian style, with all kinds of secret twists,” as he explains to his fellow cons. But he’s soon a reluctant accomplice to murder and drowning with debt, jeopardizing his parole, life, and loved ones.

Chic, sleak, fast-paced, packed with action near unprecedented in Icelandic series such as car chases, “Rekjavik Fusion” plays out on a far larger canvas than nearly all Icelandic series.

Lanterns Actor Garret Dillahunt Drops Hint That He's Playing Green Arrow; James Gunn Responds
Image
Yesterday, some images posted by Lanterns actor Garrett Dillahunt sparked speculation that the Deadwood and Last House of the Left star might be set to play Oliver Queen in the upcoming HBO series.

When Dillahunt's casting was announced, he was said to be playing a character named William Macon, who was described as "a self-righteous, conspiracy-minded man who masks his ruthless ambition behind a charming and calculated facade."

It's easy enough to understand why fans might have assumed that he's really playing Ollie - the actor appeared in costume as Green Arrow in some behind-the-scenes photos and storyboard shots, after all - but whatever his reasons for sharing the since-deleted Insta post, it doesn't look like he'll be suiting up as the Emerald Archer in the Dcu.

When asked if there was any truth to the rumor that Dillahunt might have been cast as Ga on Threads, DC Studios co-head...
