Convicted of a decade old crime of transporting drug money to an ex-girlfriend, normally law-abiding Piper Chapman is sentenced to a year and a half behind bars to face the reality of how life-changing prison can really be.
In 2017, the long-running children's program Sesame Street (1969) ran a parody of Orange Is the New Black titled "Orange Is the New Snack." In the parody, a small, blonde Muppet named "Piper Snackman" starts at a new school and introduces her fellow students to a new, healthy snack: oranges. The Sesame Street parody boasted a new interpretation of the show's theme song ("You've Got Time [for Snacks]") and Muppet versions of many of the real show's characters ("Googly Eyes," "Forlorn-a" "Mr. Mustache," etc.). The Muppet characters often mention the school's dreaded punishment, being sent to the SHU--which turns out to be an actual shoe.

The second you're perceived as weak, you already are.
The timeline of the show often changes; the first season indicates being set in 2010 (upon entering prison, Piper begs Larry to not watch the latest Mad Men (2007) without her, and Larry is shown the latest episode from season 4, which originally aired in 2010). However, season 5 references the San Bernarndino shootings, which occurred in 2015. This cannot be possible as Piper's prison sentence was for 15 months and only about a year has passed in those five seasons.
