With no big new releases at the box office this weekend, sci-fi epic "Dune: Part Two" and "Kung Fu Panda 4" are staying seated at the top of the charts. It's a closer race than last week, though, as the second half of Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" adaptation continues to draw crowds and rake in those lucrative IMAX ticket sales. Deadline reports that "Dune: Part Two" is tracking to gross $28-29 million in its third weekend at the box office, a relatively small drop of around 38% from last week.
The beauty of counter-programming, though, is that two big movies can dominate at the box office without cannibalizing each other (sometimes they can even team up and help each other). After a strong $57.9 million start last weekend, "Kung Fu Panda 4" is tracking for a $31.5 million second weekend, a drop of around 46%.
While Jack Black's kung fu fighting panda looks likely to land the No.

After a weekend with the Oscars sharing the spotlight with the best one-two punch at the box office since July, the VOD and Netflix current home viewing charts lag in importance. “Argylle” (Universal) had a good launch on PVOD and “Damsel,” the kind of far-removed from awards thoughts Netflix original film, clicked with users immediately. Both bits of news are so below the radar that they have little relevance to how things stand in the industry.
“Argylle” — which Apple reportedly acquired for $200 million from “Kingsman” creator Matthew Vaughn and then released theatrically through Universal (with a gross of under $45 million) — came out on PVOD (for $19.99 rental) two weeks earlier than Apple’s earlier “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Napoleon.” And significantly, in doing so, delayed when their streaming subscribers gain access to it.

Coming off of his turn directing the Academy Award-winning war drama All Quiet on the Western Front, anticipation has been high for Edward Berger's star-studded next feature, Conclave. Audiences won't have to wait much longer to experience the project, as Focus Features will be releasing the film theatrically in the United States on Nov. 8, 2024. This will come after the film gets a limited release in New York and Los Angeles on Nov. 1.

Oscar week is finally here! Ask anyone who has been in the thick of awards season and they’ll likely let out a huge sigh followed by exasperated admission that this has been one of the most hectic runs in recent memory. The condensed calendar, forced by last year’s dual strikes, could translate to more lively bashes, however, as there’s light at the end of the tunnel with Sunday’s Oscars. That can only mean that champagne is currently popping at A-list bashes across Los Angeles, and The Hollywood Reporter is on the scene everywhere from Vanity Fair and Elton John to MPTF’s Night Before. See below for the roundup of all the red carpet action.

Austin Butler is going from blades to bikes as he goes from Dune: Part Two to the upcoming period drama, The Bikeriders. Butler revealed that his immediate start on The Bikeriders meant that he couldn’t shave his hair for Dune 2 as time was not allotted to have his hair grow back, so he’s actually wearing a prosthetic bald cap. He got to keep his blonde locks and Focus Features has now released the new trailer for The Bikeriders, which Butler stars in with Tom Hardy.
If you recall, The Bikeriders was originally set for a fall 2023 release via Disney’s Searchlight. The studio ended up selling the film (in an unusual move) to Focus, who decided to set it up as summer counter programming. This might have been a smart move as Butler is sure to come off Dune: Part Two an even bigger star than he was a few months ago.

Watch the Infamous Photo of Will Smith and Margot Robbie That Started Rumors of Their Alleged Affair
Will Smith and Margot Robbie were rumored to be having an affair, way back when the duo first appeared together in the film Focus. The rumors were sparked thanks to a photo that Smith and Robbie took, one where some harmless fun between costars was blown out of proportion as rumors of the two having an affair began hitting the airwaves.

Will Smith was married at the time, and Margot Robbie quickly took to social media to address the rumors, clearing up the air about whether the actors were romantically involved (despite Will being married to Jada Pinkett Smith) or not. However, the rumors persisted even after they were publically addressed by Robbie, as they often do in Hollywood.

Let’s rewind back to November 2023, the very first weekend after the historic Screen Actors Guild strike ended. Back then, star Da’Vine Joy Randolph shared with IndieWire that she was already at ease with how “The Holdovers” would be received, despite only director Alexander Payne being able to promote it during its first couple of months of screening.
“I knew that we would reach people’s hearts,” said the eventual frontrunner for the Best Supporting Actress Oscar, who plays Mary Lamb, a prep school head chef and grieving mother in the Focus Features release. “I feel like I was a part of something really special that could have sustained and held it, even if [the strikes] went all the way through the end of the year.”

This past weekend was sort of the calm before the storm at the box office, with "Bob Marley: One Love" sort of holding it down until "Dune: Part Two" arrives to help rescue 2024's abysmal ticket sales thus far. But a couple of new movies did hit theaters, with "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba—To the Hashira Training" leading the way and maintaining the trend of anime finding its audience in theaters. Unfortunately, the weekend's other big new release, Ethan Coen's "Drive-Away Dolls," didn't fare nearly as well and now ranks as one of the year's early theatrical disappointments.
The film earned just $2.4 million in its debut, placing eighth on the charts just behind "Wonka" ($2.45 million), a film in its 11th weekend, and just ahead of "The Beekeeper" ($1.9 million), a film in its seventh weekend. The early weekend numbers are starting to roll in, and it’s good news for Bob Marley: One Love, with the audience-friendly biopic crossing an important milestone worldwide. Indeed, the film has now crossed the century mark, making $101 million worldwide. By the end of the weekend, Bob Marley: One Love should cross $70 million domestically, with a $13.8 million weekend (according to Deadline’s numbers).
Meanwhile, in second place is the latest instalment of the ever-popular Demon Slayer anime saga, with To the Hashira Training on track to crack $10 million for the weekend, which is just about $500k more than I predicted in my box office forecast. The faith-based Ordinary Angels is third, with a softer-than-expected $6.5 million predicted, despite an A+ CinemaScore. “Wonka” (Warner Bros.) achieved something that the much bigger “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” didn’t. With the #1 spot again this week on VOD top 10s of iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu, it becomes the first film to do this since “Avatar: The Way of Water” last year.
It didn’t come without a challenge. “The Iron Claw” (A24), like the Roald Dahl-inspired musical priced at $19.99 (though to buy; “Wonka” remains rental only) when released on Tuesday, held the #1 spot at iTunes for five days before dropping down. It’s #2 as well at Vudu, with the always lagging Google Play showing it at #5.
Netflix saw a similarly close battle, with the original rom-com “Players” debuting on Valentine’s Day leading leading their top 10 for four days until Eli Roth’s “Thanksgiving,” the latest Sony release to initially stream on the platform, debuted. The Gina Rodriguez/Damon Wayans Jr. film was directed by Trish Sie.

Filmmaker Sean Wang’s endearing live-action short Năi Nai & Wài Pó might seem to be perhaps the lightest of all the Oscar nominees in the category, but he had more on his mind in chronicling the lives of his inseparable grandmothers, the 94-year-old Năi Nai (Yi Yan Fuei) and 83-year-old Wài Pó (Zhang Li Hua) as they go about their daily lives, even sleeping in the same bed in their Bay Area home.
The recent spate of violence against innocent people in the Asian community in America was also on Wang’s mind as he joined us for Deadline’s Contenders Film: The Nominees.
“I mean, the idea of it is right there, you know, my two grandmas. The movie is full of life, and joy, and humor, and farts, and all the things that it encapsulates because they are full of joy and humor and sometimes gas,” he said.

The movie from Oscar nominee Sean Wang premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, where it received critical and audience acclaim, winning both the U.S. Dramatic Audience Award and the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Best Ensemble Cast.
Inspired by Wang’s youth, the pic follows a 13-year old Taiwanese-American in the last month of summer 2008 before high school begins. The boy learns what his family can’t teach him: how to skate, how to flirt, and how to love your mom. Wang also wrote in addition to directing.

Casting superhero characters is important, but at the same time, it's not important. During the '80s and '90s, audiences felt a certain thrill knowing that certain outsize movie stars would be playing Batman villains. Indeed, Jack Nicholson received top billing on Tim Burton's "Batman," and audiences were more keen to see an actor of such stature hamming it up as a murderous gangster clown. The same could be said of Danny DeVito as the Penguin, Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman, Jim Carrey as the Riddler, or Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze. Casting, in those cases, was more important than the character.
In the era of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, however, that changed. The characters became more important than the casting. Audiences were drawn to MCU movies because they wanted to see Captain America, not because they were dying to see Chris Evans' interpretation of Captain America. Any number...

“Wonka” reigns again on the VOD charts, but the week’s real star is Amazon/MGM’s “American Fiction.” Driven by its five Oscar nominations and continued success at the box office, it reached #2 at Apple TV/iTunes on Saturday and is currently #4. Not bad for a racial satire that’s grossed $17 million to date.
It suggests the film will earn substantially more than its theatrical take, reflecting smart strategy: While Amazon makes movies for streaming, it recognizes (like Apple) the value of making VOD its first at-home platform. It’s also a good argument that the Netflix Mo of deemphasizing theatrical and skipping VOD misses opportunities to get awards and audience traction.
“Oppenheimer” (Universal) repeats as #2 on two charts, though its reduced price keeps it from making Vudu revenue-driven list. Christopher Nolan’s Oscar frontrunner has been the strongest film since its home-viewing debut three months ago, now sustained by Oscar nomination-leading total.

One Christmas Warner Bros. release replaced another this week with “Wonka” taking over as #1 from “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” on all VOD charts. However, other late-year releases including “Migration,” “Wish,” and “The Marvels” aren’t having the same luck. While theatrical is the premium marketing tool for home viewing, we’re seeing that it doesn’t always translate to chart placement.
Universal’s “Migration” is weaker than past animated releases, currently #4 at Vudu (which tallies by revenue). Disney’s “Wish,” also in week two, placed only on two charts. In its third week, “The Marvels” only placed on Vudu and is #20 at Apple TV. “Ferrari” (Neon) and “The Color Purple” (Warner Bros.) are gone after one week. “The Boys in the Boat” (Amazon MGM) managed just one week on the charts.
“The Beekeeper” (Amazon MGM), which is still performing well in theaters (#3 this weekend), is available at home after 18 days.

Amy Winehouse had a quick rise to fame and unfortunately, it lasted just as quickly when her addictions would take a toll on her tumultuous life. Her talent would not go unnoticed as the singer gained a huge following, and her fans celebrate her music to this day. Focus Features has now released the official trailer for the biopic about Winehouse as it chronicles her meteoric celebrity and how the dark forces of it all would become too much for her. Marisa Abela, of the TV series Industry and Barbie, plays the singer. The film also stars Jack O’Connell, Eddie Marsan and Lesley Manville. The biopic comes from filmmaker Sam Taylor-Johnson.
The official plot synopsis from Focus Features reads,
“The extraordinary story of Amy Winehouse’s early rise to fame from her early days in Camden through the making of her groundbreaking album, Back to Black that catapulted Winehouse to global fame.

The Amy Winehouse biopic is almost here. On Friday, Focus Features dropped the first official trailer for Back to Black, the drama based on the short, stratospheric life of the British soul music legend.

“Dìdi,” a coming-of-age drama that won the U.S. dramatic audience award at Sundance, has sold to Focus Features. The semi-autobiographical film was written, produced and directed by Sean Wang in his feature debut.
The film follows a 13-year-old Taiwanese American boy in the throes of an awkward adolescence, as he enjoys the last month of summer before high school begins. He experiences the pangs of first love, becomes friends with some skaters (after promising to make videos of them), fights with his older sister and gets a hard-earned understanding of his mom. It is set in 2008, when MySpace was still a thing and TikTok had yet to explode.
Wang says he hopes that audiences will be able to see a version of themselves in the film, which stars Izaac Wang as the filmmaker’s cinematic alter-ego and Joan Chen (“The Last Emperor”) as his onscreen mother.

Netflix scored 18 Oscar nominations for its 2023 films, with eight for feature films — the most of any distributor. All told, Netflix had nine nominations in top categories incuding Best Picture, International Film, Animated Feature, acting, and writing categories.
Not that Netflix’s domestic viewers seemed to notice. Since the Oscar nomination announcement January 23, not one nominated film reentered its top 10 most watched film list. Since then, two obscure titles have held the top spot: “The Hill,” a faith-based sports biopic that grossed under $8 million when it was released last summer, and “The Postcard Killings,” a 2020 home video-released European murder mystery directed by Oscar-winning director Denis Tanovic (“No Man’s Land”).
Nominees fared somewhat better in VOD viewing. Led by “Oppenheimer” (Universal), all five Best Picture nominees that are available to view and without a streaming alternative placed on at least one top 10 list.

This year, Sundance saw big deals go down for “A Real Pain”, “It’s What’s Inside”, “Presence” (Neon), and “My Old Ass” as well as smaller acquisitions for “Kneecap” (Sony Pictures Classics), “Ghostlight” (IFC Films), and “Ibelin”(Netflix).
It’s not the same bull market as the old days, but we’ll take it. And while streamers made their presence felt with the two largest acquisitions to date, it’s clear that for most of these films theatrical will be part of their lifecycles. But is that a smart move?
Based on last year’s results, the answer is: Could be. Domestic box office from all Sundance 2023 films was the best for any year since Covid. At around $100 million, it quadrupled the take from 2022 Festival titles (around $25 million). All told, about two thirds of the 2023 films have some sort of domestic distribution, including streaming outlets. Of these, about a dozen films have yet to open.

Fresh and original led the way at Oscars 2023, as “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (A24) collected seven wins including Best Picture. This year’s frontrunner, Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” (Universal), a biopic of the theoretical physicist (Cillian Murphy), also feels inevitable on its way to a likely 13 nominations and a Best Picture win. So far the film has won the Drama Golden Globe and the Critics Choice Award for Best Film, among many other awards, and landed 13 BAFTA nominations and multiple Guild mentions including the PGA, DGA, and SAG Ensemble.
With “Oppenheimer,” Nolan delivered a serious but entertaining portrait of a man who must confront how he changed the world and not for the better. It could have been a treatise, it wasn’t, and delivered almost $1 billion at the global box office.
Nolan challenged his crew to create everything possible in front of the cameras and avoid digital VFX as much as possible.

The 2024 BAFTA film awards nominations are in, and Universal’s historical epic Oppenheimer, directed by Christopher Nolan, leads the way with 13 nods, followed by Disney-owned Searchlight Pictures’ Poor Things from director Yorgos Lanthimos with 11.
Overall, Disney and Searchlight lead the way with 22 total nominations, according to statistics provided by BAFTA. The haul is driven by the strong outing by Poor Things, as well as six nods for Andrew Haigh’s All of Us Strangers. Also boosting the Disney tally are single noms for Pixar’s Elemental, which is up for best animated film, and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is up for a special visual effects BAFTA.
Meanwhile, Universal earned 14 nominations on Thursday, including one for Earth Mama which got Savanah Leaf (writer, director, producer), Shirley O’Connor (producer) and Medb Riordan (producer) a nod in the Outstanding Debut by a British writer, director or producer category.

Despite its popularity on Netflix, Lift has received poor reviews from audiences and critics, with scores of 33% and 32% on Rotten Tomatoes, respectively. Toho International’s sleeper hit Godzilla Minus One grossed an estimated $853k this weekend for a cume of $50.9 million at 605 locations in week seven as arctic blasts buffet much of the nation.
The film about the giant reptilian monster passed the $50 million market Saturday, becoming the highest grossing Japanese language live action or animated film in the U.S. It’s also the fifth highest grossing non-English-language film at the U.S. box office. The pic currently on track to hit $100 million globally.
It was a weekend with some few notable expansions as Oscar-nominated hopefuls continue runs through awards season, and with another strong showing by a duo of Indian films.
Jonathan Glazer’s Zone of Interest from A24 made an estimated $300k for the four-day weekend, for a cume of $1 million on 25 screens (up from four) in limited expansion. The riveting Holocaust drama about a Nazi commandant and his...

Emma Stone formed an immediate bond with Ryan Gosling when they first collaborated. So much so that Stone quipped she wanted to do as many projects as she could with the actor.

Stone and Gosling first collaborated on the feature Crazy, Stupid Love. The film’s directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa both remarked that they sensed instant chemistry between the two stars.
“If I remember correctly she wasn’t exactly what was described on paper, but John and I had both been taken with her in Superbad and then in Zombieland,” Ficarra once told Entertainment Weekly. “It felt inevitable that she was going to hit. Zack Snyder’s “Rebel Moon: Part One — Child of Fire” replaced “Leave the World Behind” as No. 1 this week on Netflix’s Top 10 Movie list. But the big news here is that Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro,” considered a prime awards contender and given a nationwide, four-week theatrical release, dropped off the list after only four days.
Among new releases on PVOD, “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” (Lionsgate) placed No. 1 at Vudu and Google Play, second at iTunes (where the reduced-price “Oppenheimer” returned to No. 1). “Trolls Band Together” (Universal) placed No. 2 at Vudu, but lower elsewhere.
It may be unfair to judge the response equivalent to broader interest genre titles like the sci-fi “Rebel Moon.” We don’t expect highly acclaimed specialized titles to compete on equal footing in theatrical box office lists.

The year-end awards are divided into three main categories: Best Of, Eda Female Focus (for women only), and Special Mention.

“Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” (Tas Rights Management), with three added songs, came out for rent (at $19.89) on the singer’s birthday (an unusual Wednesday release for PVOD). It scored well, with two #1s (both Google Play and Vudu), as well as iTunes initially. But in a surprise, “Killers of the Flower Moon” (Paramount for Apple) is back atop iTunes, while holding on well elsewhere.
Both #1s are noteworthy, as well as another factor: An unexpected decision from Universal. Normally, even as a decent performer (it has grossed $88 million), “Trolls Band Together” would have come to PVOD after three weeks in theaters. But it’s actually only available on December 19, after its fifth weekend in theaters. That took it away from competition until close to Christmas.
Curiously, “Eras” at this point is not for download, with no word on whether that will be added for last-minute gift giving. It’s...

Howard the Duck's 50th anniversary special takes a satirical approach, exploring how he could be integrated into the Marvel Universe. The first story imagines what would've happened if Howard's presidential campaign had been successful, with greedy aliens profiting from conformist versions of superhero stories. The story also includes digs at Disney, who initially felt that Howard was too similar to Donald Duck, highlighting the conglomerate's trend of acquiring studios and IPs for profit.
Howard the Duck has always had a biting satirical bent, so it makes sense that his 50th anniversary special wouldn't pull any punches. Despite starring in the first ever Marvel theatrical movie, Howard has been relegated to cameo appearances and Easter eggs in the years since. That may be why the special's first "What If..." story goes straight for the McU's nonstop content machine.
Renamed "Waugh If..." after the character's duckish sigh, each story in the special...

When Megan Cruz downloaded TikTok in March 2020, she didn’t think much of it. “The first video that I uploaded, I was like, ‘It could be cool! I could get 10,000 followers or something!’”
550,000 followers and nearly four years later, Cruz (known to her followers as JStoobs), has become one of the most prominent voices in the online film community — and she’s started dreaming a lot bigger.
While she went to school for animation, Cruz had tabled the idea of working in the entertainment industry, instead working in the food industry before running a prominent restaurant chain’s social media. Now that she’s able to focus full-time on content creation and facilitating conversations around media, Cruz is starting a new podcast, “The Broad Perspective.”

As always, the Film Independent Spirit Award nominations — see the full list here — gave a boost to a handful of potential Oscar contenders. While the Santa Monica beach Spirit Awards show on February 24, 2024 is some months off, nominations leaders “American Fiction” (Amazon/MGM), “May December” (Netflix), and “Past Lives” (A24), with five nominations each including Best Feature, are looking good for Oscar attention.
The Spirit Awards nominating committees are comprised of film professionals from every side of the industry. The winners are voted on by members of Film Independent.
While Todd Haynes for “May December” and Celine Song for “Past Lives,” who also landed Best Director slots, are long shots for Best Director Oscar nominations, this recognition boosts their chances of a Best Picture or Screenplay nod. It’s all about creating must-sees for Oscar voters.

From kids to adults, people are always fascinated by Barbie and Barbie’s life. Margot Robbie is an Australian film producer and actress. married to a British film producer Tom Ackerley in year 2016.

Magicians praise films like My Cousin Vinny, Focus, The Prestige, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Now You See Me, and The Illusionist for their realistic portrayal of magic tricks and sleight of hand. These films combine movie magic with real-world techniques, captivating audiences while leaving them wondering how the tricks are done. The quality of the performances and the attention to detail in these films, such as using consultants and real-life practices, contribute to their success in portraying the artistry and craft of magic.
Magic and sleight of hand is an artistic craft, and some magicians have praised films for their portrayal of magic tricks on the big screen. Movies and magic share several things in common; movies craft a story, use special tools and props to bring that story to life, and then they showcase it to the world with plenty of bravado to ensure the story entertains and delights.

With the SAG-AFTRA strike settled, the six-month, multi-guild Hollywood labor disruption has finally ended, but the theatrical damage has only begun to surface.
Reviewing the films delayed until next year, a rough estimate suggests that the stoppage cost theaters around $400 million- $600 million in gross — more, when including lost concession revenue. “Barbie,” “Oppenheimer,” “Sound of Freedom,” and “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tours” kept the damage from being worse.
Immediately following the SAG-AFTRA settlement, Disney announced wholesale delays in its upcoming release schedule. Their revived plans includes only one Marvel title for 2024, down from the customary three per year from MCU. Disney was among the first studios to announce delays, with Sony already out Wednesday evening with word the third “Venom” film would move from July to November.
The good news for theaters is despite it all, 2023 should still reach the $9 billion in domestic gross hoped for this year. However, any hopes...

Festival and specialty fare releases crowded the top ten this weekend with Priscilla (A24) and The Holdovers (Focus Features) expanding to hit nos. 4 and 6 respectively. Yash Raj Films’ Bollywood thriller Tiger 3 is at no. 8, and world of mouth continued to buoy Radical (Pantelion/Participant) with Eugenio Derbez, rounding out the list at no. 10.
Meanwhile, Kristoffer Borgli’s dark comedy Dream Scenario had a strong limited opening — the latest in a string of them from A24. Orlando, My Political Biography, an erudite doc from Sideshow/Janus Films based on the Virginia Woolf novel, grossed an estimated $7.5k in one theater (Film Forum) with Friday and Saturday sellouts.
That’s a nice indie weekend. With The Marvels melting down and some wide releases having shifted due to the now-settled SAG-AFTRA strike, there’s been a window for independents on awards season runs.
