‘Shetland’ Season 10 Gets a Huge Update After Divisive Season 9
Image
Based on the novels by Ann Cleeves, the beloved BBC crime series Shetland may have stumbled in fan opinion following the recent Season 9, but let that take nothing away from what the show has achieved across 12 years to date. Following the crime drama being renewed for two more seasons back in March 2024, all eyes were firmly on Season 9, which saw a new engaging mystery challenge the minds of Di Ruth Calder (Ashley Jensen) and Alison "Tosh" McIntosh (Alison O'Donnell).

However, the response to the ninth season has been mixed, with some declaring it the worst of the bunch. This can be seen via the season's Rotten Tomatoes audience score of 53%, which pales in comparison to the overall series score of 79%. In fact, when compared to the perfect critical rating of 100% handed to Season 4, it's clear that the series might have lost some of its spark. Nevertheless, Shetland still proves popular,...

'Red Dwarf' Revival Might Not Happen According to Craig Charles
Image
In the annals of British TV, there have been a lot of great shows that have found success here in America. Downton Abbey, Doctor Who, and Luther are a few that come to mind, as are such classics as Faulty Towers, Absolutely Fabulous, and, of course, Red Dwarf, the sci-fi sitcom that's gained a cult following over the years to become one of the most beloved series ever made. However, while fans have been eagerly anticipating a return to their favorite mining spacecraft, it appears as if plans have unfortunately fallen through, and a reported Season 13 might not happen after all.

Speaking with Radio Times, Red Dwarf star Craig Charles told the outlet that a return of the British sitcom might not happen now due to finances. It was previously announced in 2024 that Red Dwarf would be filming three new episodes in 2025, with other key cast members Chris Barrie, Danny John-Jules...

‘An t-Eilean’: Why the BBC Is Betting on the U.K.’s First Gaelic Prestige Drama Series ‘The Island’
Image
An t-Eilean, or: The Island. That is the title of a prestige crime drama set on the Western Isles of Scotland that was launched by the BBC on Tuesday evening on its BBC iPlayer streaming service and BBC Alba, the Scottish Gaelic-language free-to-air channel that the U.K. public service broadcaster co-owns with Mg Alba. Alba is the Scottish Gaelic name for Scotland. And An t-Eilean is, according to the networks, the U.K.’s “first-ever high-end Gaelic drama series.”

That also makes it the biggest Gaelic drama in BBC Alba’s history and, according to The Guardian, the most expensive series ever made in Scots Gaelic with a budget of a £1 million ($1.2 million) per episode.

Described as “a tense, twisting story of lies, loss and long-buried secrets,” the series of four 50- minute long episodes stars Sorcha Groundsell (His Dark Materials, Shetland, The Innocents) as Kat Crichton, a Family...

ITV Studios Quarterly Revenue Falls 20 Percent, Hit by Hollywood Strikes; ITV Adds $13M in Cost Cuts
Image
U.K. TV giant ITV, led by CEO Carolyn McCall, reported a 20 percent drop in revenue for its ITV Studios production arm on Thursday, “impacted by the phasing of deliveries and the 2023 U.S. writers’ and actors’ strike.”

However, ITV Studios is on track to deliver record adjusted earnings before interest, taxes and amortization for the full year 2024, “reflecting efficiency gains and a significant fourth-quarter delivery schedule.” ITV Studios revenue is expected to decline in the mid-single digit percent range over the full year though. The company said that will be “only marginally down year-on-year (when) excluding the impact of the U.S. actors’ and writers’ strikes.”

Meanwhile, total advertising revenue was flat in the third quarter, as projected by the company.

And streaming service Itvx “continued to perform strongly with 14 percent growth in streaming hours and 15 percent growth in digital advertising revenue” in the nine months to Sept. 30.”

Where Can I Watch Shetland Online Is It Available To Stream For Free?
Image
Those who are looking to watch the Scottish series Shetland have a few handy options as long as they're willing to subscribe to the right service. Originally based on the crime novels by Ann Cleeves, Shetland takes place on the Scottish archipelago that gives the series its name. Premiering in March 2013 on BBC One, the show follows a local police team who solves a bevy of crimes within the close-knit island community. The cast of Shetland features an ensemble of talented Scottish actors, but the series has seen plenty of turnover throughout its eight seasons.

The most notable change came with the lead of the show. From seasons 1 through 7, Douglas Henshall as Jimmy Prez led the police team. Then Henshall departed, and Detective Inspector Prez was replaced by Detective Inspector Ruth Calder, played by Ashley Jensen. There have been more changes than that, and yet, Shetland has soldiered on for 8 seasons and counting.

Image
Midnight Taxi, a gripping new thriller from writer-director duo Bertie and Samantha Speirs, is set to hit VOD and digital platforms on Tuesday, 23 July 2024. The film stars Ladi Emeruwa, Charlotte Price, and Eddie Eyre, and promises a chilling dive into London’s seedy underworld.

The film centres on Eddie Carter (played by Emeruwa), a Black Cab driver whose nocturnal routines are disrupted by a murder that plunges him into a world of fear and uncertainty. When Eddie’s daytime sleep is disturbed by relentless construction noise, he begins to rely heavily on coffee to stay alert during his night shifts. One night, after pulling over for a rest, Eddie wakes up to a horrifying sight: a murdered woman’s body lying ahead of his cab.

Haunted by the discovery and increasingly disturbed by his fatigue, Eddie’s nights grow more terrifying. He starts to sleepwalk again—a condition from his...

Shetland Renewed for Series 9 & 10 with Ashley Jensen Back as Dci Calder
Image
Warning: contains spoilers for the Shetland series eight finale.

When Di Ruth Calder (Ashley Jensen) was asked at the end of Shetland series eight when she’d be leaving the isles, she answered: “Actually, not for a while.” Having repaired her relationship with her estranged brother and dealt with some old demons, Ruth planned to stick around. Long enough it seems, to lead the cast of Shetland series nine and ten.

The BBC has commissioned two further series of the picturesque crime drama starring Jensen in the lead role of Di Calder. Filming on series nine begins in March 2024, with filming on series 10 to follow in 2025. Fans can expect the show to return to BBC One either in late 2024 or early 2025. International Artists Management Kicked Out Of UK Agency Body After Misrepresenting Self-Tape Audition Invites
Image
Exclusive: International Artists Management (Iam) has been removed from the UK’s respected agency professional body after Deadline revealed it sent a client misrepresented self-tape audition invites.

The Personal Managers’ Association (Pma) said in a statement that it had revoked Iam’s membership amid concerns over the company’s honesty and integrity.

The Pma’s decision comes after a Deadline investigation showed that Iam sent client Mark Barrett at least six illegitimate self-tape invites over a two-year period.

In five of the purported invites, Iam appeared to change the wording of emails from casting directors to make it seem as if they had requested Barrett to tape for a role when in fact he had not been called to audition.

Through its attorney Carter-Ruck, Iam argued that the misleading self-tape invites were in Barrett’s interests as it pushed for him to secure work.

Barrett, who has featured in projects including Outlander,...

UK Self-Tape Scandal Deepens: International Artists Management Admits Sending Client Misrepresented Audition Invites
Image
Exclusive: International Artists Management (Iam), the London agency that claims to rep stars including Steve Guttenberg and Gary Dourdan, has admitted sending a client misrepresented invites for self-tape auditions in an attempt to secure him work.

Mark Barrett, whose credits include Outlander, has blown the whistle on his former agent, gathering evidence showing that he was emailed at least six illegitimate self-tape invites between February 2022 and January 2024. In five of the purported invites, Iam appeared to change the wording of emails from casting directors to make it seem as if they had requested Barrett to tape for a role when in fact he had not been called to audition.

Barrett accused Iam of giving him false hope after he received the purported invites to audition for major roles in films and TV shows, including Guy Ritchie’s Netflix series The Gentlemen and BBC drama Shetland. He invested time and effort into recording the tapes,...

BBC Studios Purchases ITV's Half of BritBox International, Giving It Full Control Over the Streamer in US
Tom Fussell
In a move reminiscent of Hulu’s latest dealings, BritBox is now coming under the control of a single company.

It’s a little strange to see streaming services that are controlled by more than one company these days. Hulu, for example, is finally in the process of coming under the full ownership of Disney, after years of being split between that company, Fox and Comcast. The journey of BritBox from multiple owners to one has been far swifter, as BBC Studios has announced it has acquired ITV’s 50% stake in the international arm of British-focused streaming platform.

BBC Studios paid $322 million for ITV’s stake in BritBox. Extended licensing agreements will keep ITV content available to stream on Britbox for years to come. A change in ownership could signal big incoming changes for BritBox. 7-Day Free Trial $8.99+ / month BritBox.com

BBC Studios Buys ITV’s Stake in Streamer BritBox for $322M
Adrian Dunbar, Vicky McClure, and Martin Compston in Line of Duty (2012)
BBC Studios, the BBC’s commercial content studio and streaming business, is acquiring ITV’s 50 percent stake in BritBox International for $322 million.

The deal, announced Friday, will give BBC Studios full ownership of the BritBox streaming platform and values the streamer at $631 million. As part of the agreement, BBC Studios has extended its licensing agreements with ITV to ensure that the latter company’s British content will continue to appear on BritBox.

BBC Studios said that BritBox will become part of the company’s Global Media and Streaming division, complementing its expanding portfolio of digital and direct-to-consumer services that includes BBC.com, BBC Select, the BBC’s premium ad-free doc streaming service in North America and BBC Podcast Premium, an audio service available in more than 160 countries.

“This is an important acquisition for us. We are taking full ownership of a successful, growing service we know well and that fits...

BBC Studios Buys ITV Stake in BritBox International for $322 Million
Image
BBC Studios has bought British broadcaster ITV’s 50% stake in streamer BritBox International for £255 million ($322 million), the companies revealed on Friday.

The streamer was founded in 2017 as a joint venture between BBC Studios, which is the commercial arm of the British broadcaster, and ITV. “The transaction will provide net proceeds including loan repayments and accrued dividends and after tax of around £235 million,” the companies said.

“The sale reflects ITV’s strategy of focusing on supercharging its U.K. advertiser-funded streaming service, Itvx and growing its global Studios division,” ITV added. “The board intends to return the entire net sale proceeds to shareholders through a share buyback which it expects to launch imminently after the full-year results on March 7.”

Under the terms of the agreement, ITV Studios will continue to receive an ongoing revenue stream from BritBox International similar to current levels for the use of ITV content under new extended licensing agreements.

BBC Studios Buys ITV Out Of Joint Streamer BritBox International For $321M
Image
BBC Studios has paid £255M ($321M) to acquire ITV’s shareholding in their joint venture streamer, BritBox International.

In a regulatory note confirming the sale this morning, ITV confirmed it had sold its 50%, with the proceeds set to return to shareholders through a share buyback scheme that will launch after full-year results are posted on March 7.

BritBox CEO Reman Sakaan will exit the business, which will join the BBC Studios Global Media & Streaming division alongside the likes of BBC.com, BBC Select and BBC Podcast Premium. The BBC said new leaderships plans are “in place to ensure a smooth transition” and will be announced “imminently.”

The deal values BritBox International, which has nearly four million subscribers in eight territories, at over £500M. However, ITV is focusing on growth of its own streamer, Itvx, and its global ITV Studios division will redirect efforts in that direction following the deal.

Shetland: Ellen Quinn DNA Sample Explained
Image
Warning: contains plot spoilers for Shetland series 8 episode 4.

“The Bains take care of their own,” said Bain family matriarch Grace in the Shetland series eight opener when her 23-year-old granddaughter Ellen was declared missing. “Ellen’s a Quinn,” corrected Grace’s son-in-law Kieran Quinn. But is she?

That was the line of inquiry investigated by Di Ruth Calder in episode four, after she heard from a reliable source that when Ellen’s mother Stella was very young, she had a relationship with Ruth’s father. The local Church of Scotland reverend, now-deceased, was the leader of a youth group attended by young Stella, which set Ruth’s mind to thinking – could Ellen have secretly been her half-sister, conceived and born years after Ruth left Shetland as an 18 year old?

“It’s Not a Match”

In episode four, Ruth secretly requested a DNA comparison between herself and Ellen Quinn from Cora’s lab to check,...

Yes, That Was Jimmy Perez’s Mum With the Shotgun in Shetland Series 8
Image
Warning: contains plot spoilers for Shetland series eight, episode two.

The Shetland islands only have a population of 22,000 – roughly a tenth of the number of people who go to Glastonbury Festival – so up there, you can expect to run into the same faces time and again. It’s no different for Scottish actors on TV. There are only a finite number, and in a long-running series like BBC One’s Shetland, sometimes cast-members get recycled from one role to another.

That’s what happened with Ann Louise Ross, the actor who plays farmer and widower Agnes Moffat in Shetland series eight. We first met Agnes in episode one, when (temporary Di) Tosh is investigating a series of livestock murders. Several of Agnes’ sheep have been found with their throats cut and daubed in their blood with a mysterious symbol.

In episode two, that same symbol is also found tattooed on...
