The character Young Farmer 'Toru' was named after Bill Nishimura, who was a historical consultant on the film. Bill was born in Southern California in 1920. When Bill was a boy, he met Sei Fujii, who was a friend of his father. Bill was able to provide insight for the filmmakers, into the history and character of Fujii. Like many Nisei, or second generation Japanese Americans, in addition to his American name he has a Japanese name as well: Toru.
