If you can just grin and bear the first season, it's worth it. Forget Thandie Newton's charachter, she's duller than dishwater and stupid with it, so just focus on Marty and Ethan and you'll enjoy it.
  • I've watched tons of series, and IMO I don't watch terrible shows. I stay away from network shows for the most part, and mainly only watch cable and streaming series nowadays. I somehow happened to find out about this show a few years ago and at the time it had a rating of about a 6.9. I like Thandie Newton as an actress and because the description seemed up my alley I decided to watch the first episode despite the mixed reviews. I never watch shows rated below a 7.5, never. I liked it immediately, and watched it to the end. It transitioned well to Cole Hauser, and was still pretty good. This show is definitely not a 6.9 for it's genre. The writing, acting, camera work for the most part is very good. Even if the budget wasn't great, it doesn't show. I enjoyed this show as much as 4 Blocks, Condor, Zero Zero Zero, and other shows with higher ratings. I would give it a try if you can still find it, as I believe it was a DirecTV show.
  • but the last three episodes have been as good as anything on TV this season. If it was on FX, it would have a large viewership. The story is great and the acting uniformly superb and I enjoy the way the story has been progressing in each episode. The penultimate episode which I watched today has me hungry for more. AUD has scored a big hit with this one in my books.
  • I'm perplexed as to why people don't like this show more. I'm not going to describe the show in details, because there's an synopsis of the show here at IMDb. I will tell you, however, that the acting is excellent, especially from lead actors Thandie Newton and Marton Csokas. The show is compelling and engaging and isn't nearly as slow-paced as some reviewers suggest. Its pacing is actually rather brisk when compared with some other shows I've watched over the last handful of years, such as The Wire and The Killing. It also doesn't shy away from sex or violence. Perhaps the body count isn't high enough to appease today's audience...I'm not sure, but the idea that patience is lacking these days doesn't seem far fetched in the light of the fact that many people talk about The Avengers being the greatest film of all time...with a straight face. For the record, I actually got a kick out of The Avengers... Anyway, for the more enlightened viewer who's looking for an entertaining show that keeps you guessing what's coming next (without the use of cheap plots twists and run-of-the-mill storytelling), look no further. I'm fond of many popular series such as Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, BoardWalk Empire, and Dexter, and I can honestly stated that this one is worth watching.

The acting is acceptable and the script is OK. It's a good story that does have you interested in what is going to happen next . The characterisation is well done although some of the results are rather predictable.

So it's got all the making of a very good series. That's until you start looking at the detail. The lead character is an undercover female cop who hunts down her young son's killer.

This is where the problems start. She is pretty but looks ill. she is painfully slim and without muscle. In itself that's not a problem or wouldn't be if she wasn't playing a hard cop with an ability to take and give out rough justice. However, she receives injuries that would leave anyone incapacitated yet she gets up and shrugs it off. She has a car accident which she just walks away from with a limp when she would be lucky to survive. A fight scene where she kills her opponent after a bone breaking fight but after crying in a bath she walks around without any damage apart from a scratch and a bruise. She gets shot and after going ouch twice forgets it. So she seems to get hurt and the next day she is better again.

One attempt to kill her from a guy on a motorbike has the rider hit the back of a parked car at speed. Next thing he is on the bike that somehow hasn't got bent forks/wheel and rides off after being thrown over the parked car.

So at first the lack of realism can be overlooked but when an anorexic woman has no injuries repeatedly it loses credibility.

such a shame. it could have been a really good series.
  • Based on the first episode I would have agreed with most of the other comments. I watched the second episode and then the third and now I'm hooked. The acting seemed weak at first and you wondered where it was going and if it ever would, it lacked something. The plot almost explodes in the 2nd & 3rd episode. Grace was really bad and I think she still struggles with her character at times. Rogue's plot is similar to Red Widow, woman with a family gets involved in the biggest drug lord in towns business. Bottom line is I don't particularly care where its filmed or what nationality the actors are as long as I'm entertained. I find Rogue very entertaining.

For the last few seasons! I tried to watch this years ago and turned it off after like 5 minutes. Since I've nothing lately( saying that all the time anymore) I went like further in to ( I think season 2) and started to like it then season 3 they're all gone?!? Well Cole Hauser isn't and I watch it for him. Spoilers... Since I negated a bunch of episodes I thought I missed something with Tanddie missing and then her death? I thought surely she can't be dead?!? Nothing is really spoken about it again ( unless I missed something)? Oh and I liked ( forget her name? The wife from Rescue me. The new cop Harper( Sarah Carter is awful!) She looks 12 and is horrible! The interview where Ethan tells her" Maybe you're just not good at your job is spot on! I don't know how much I have left because apparently I'm on season 4 episode 18??? I need to look at the guide. At first I really didn't like Cole Hauser and that whole story line but now he's the only reason I continue to watch. Editing after finishing last night. I never watched season 1 just 2-4. I liked 3 the best. 2 and 4 were good but 4 got a bit tedious with the whole Mia thing! It's like she got stupid! Also what happened to her magical flash dive? Did her girlfriend make it? Also did she work for a Russian Govt agency? I mainly watched it ( well not mainly, the reason) was for Cole Hausers character Ethan and I never got tired of him, so.
  • Season 1 of Rogue was top notch entertainment from the marvelous acting, great photography, excellent music, and most of all, a clever, evolving, engrossing script that manages to keep you guessing right up to the last episode. Thandie Newton (Condoleeza Rice from "W") gives a spell-binding performance week after week, and she is matched by Ian Tracey, Ian Hart, Joshua Sasse, and Marton Csokas. The real treat here is how well the supporting actors do, from sexy Leah Gibson to Claudia Ferri, and Rachel Shelley, but to me the scene stealer is young Sarah Jeffery who plays Thandie's daughter. Kudos to Matthew Parkhill in his first outing as a producer and special mention to composer Jeff Toyne and Emmy winning photographer Kieran McGuigan ("Bleak House").

This series is not for the squeamish and there is a lot of murder, mayhem and nudity.

Season 2 was a bit of a disappointment in every respect. although it did have its moments.

Season 3 was a complete change of pace and may be startling for long time viewers as Cole Hauser (introduced in Season 2) takes over the leadership of the series. But don't lose heart, Hauser proves to be as captivating as Newton and the quality of the scripts, after an awkward transition, only get better.

Season 4 is great - a challenge to Season 1. The final episode is TV at its very best.
  • Its meant to be California.....the sunshine state....why the f is everyone dressed in woolly overcoats with overcast skies and permanent rain?? Is there nowhere in Canada that has sunshine?
  • This drama is so well written, directed, and acted it is a refreshing out of the box drama not usually seen on network TV or the HBO's of the industry. This is an edge of your seat drama that grips you. What separates Rogue from other crime dramas, like the Sopranos, is the characters are so well developed that you understand their actions and motivations. The raw seedy underbelly of this type of show is an acquired taste not for everyone but for those people who like watching dramas on the edge this is for you. There are no weak links in the show and the predictability of what happens next is virtually non-existent. I congratulate the producers, DirecTV, and the actors for producing this high quality drama. I am hopeful there will be a season two.
  • 9/10 for seasons 1 and 2, at least they had a story line and more/less same set of characters. Season 3 and onward - like completely different series with different scenario, actors, atmosphere. WHO ARE ALL THOSE PEOPLE?????? WHERE THEY CAME FROM????

Don't bother beyond season 2 and you'll be OK.

-10 out of 10 for season 3 extended or season 4 (WTF again?)

cant write any more lines of text not worth it sorry i mean really if someone can write more about this magnificent series - good luck to them but im all outta words but just wanted to warn others no to ruin their spare time watching this nonsense

I don't usually get into TV shows but I watched the first episode and I was hooked. I don't normally watch much TV but I watched all 10 episodes in two days! 7 the first day and the other 3 the following morning!! It was fantastic. The twists and turns keep you wondering who did what! I fully recommend this show to anyone that likes lots of action and gut wrenching plots. The actors are superb and very believable. You can feel the tension! Grace/Jackie is torn between two worlds as she plays each person. Grace when she is a police detective and Jackie when she is undercover. Jimmy, the crime boss runs his crew with compassion and fairness. Alec, the black sheep of the family trying to win his fathers love. Max, the boy wonder. So full of education but no heart! I'm hoping they bring out another season!
  • Just binge watched the first season, I was impressed, though not perfect this thinking action cop series excels where many bigger, bigger budget shows failed. First they trust that the audience is sharp enough to get the non-tropes storyline despite very sharp shot dialogue. It's sort of the anti-"Breaking Bad" in that way. While Breaking Bad had great stories and wonderful natural feeling dialog, Rogue has clippy stylized (not overtly though) dialogue, that would be suitable for graphic-novel based characters - but it doesn't feel graphic-novel-ish as dialogue goes on, it just feels sharp, and you can look at as many layers of meaning or implication as you do, or do not want. Whether you're a high school drop-out, or have university degrees up and down your sleeves, you can get a rise out of viewing the show.

The characters -some particularly good ones in the main and supporting cast, the strong characterizations (all the leads) are very good, and the few less strong ones (the Police Lieutenant is an uneven portrait)don't drag it down that much. Between great casting strong writing Big kudos to the Show-runner! (For the Brits, that's Yankee for "Executive Producer") - for those interested, in the movies "Executive Producer" is a relatively lame title demanded by everyone of the sister of the person who held coffee for someone who helped bring a bit of money, or was in the chain of people who helped secure a big star feels a self important need for an "Executive Producer" credit. Well, 3 out of 4 of them don't deserve it. In television (in North America anyhow)it is the opposite, the "Executive Producer" heads the writing room, is often the "creator" of the series and the title normally signals real creative and writer-ly responsibility.

    9/10
    Rogue
    Warning: Spoilers
i found it to be gritty and entertaining. Its a slow burner that gets better with each episode.

Its kinda funny that the 2 leads are played by a Brit and a kiwi.

but their accents are spot on, i hope it gets a 2nd season.

Jimmy's character is also quite interesting. It would give more background if we got flashbacks of his life, before he became a mobster.

Writers could also add more dimension to Grace's character by showing her life before the tragedy.

Its violent and has just the right amount of nudity(frontal).

I like the family dynamics of jimmy and his boys and crew.

I would like to see how far they can take these characters, also like to see more of Alec, and his relationships, most especially with his wife.

I would love to see more information about her.
  • This show is just dull, I am not sure why, but it is. More than once I found myself reaching for the remote and realized I was only a few minutes in.

The cast is good for the most part although none of them really shine in this and most of them have been really good in other things. The story has potential to be engaging... but it's not. Yadda yadda yadda... you get the idea.

I think the primary 2 problems may be the cinematography which is overly dark even in daylight scenes and the pacing.

Anyway... there are better shows to watch
  • I really enjoy this series. I find it exciting and visually real. I truly don't care it is not filmed in the U.S. but pretends to be in the U.S. It is not a news broadcast where everything should be factual; Rogue puts you in the right place to enjoy it. America is a melting pot where everyone is looking for their niche to live and make money-by any means necessary. Rogue shows that. The writing and the acting are great and believable, the directing is excellent, the filming is visually real (excellent), the sound, staging, everything with the production of Rogue is excellent. I am glad the series does not go over the top with sex, blood and guts, and vulgar language.

Starting off with a very shaky couple-three episodes (to the point you're seriously questioning why you are still in the chair).. but the initially very dubious acting settles down in the middle and towards the end of season one. But then the way they wrap up the storyline finale in episode ten is just so awkwardly amateurish, it's almost like they had no clue as how to end it. Not that there was an absence of previous implausibles (beginning with a ninety-pound Newton as an undercover cop), but nothing close to the head-shakers finishing S1. Then the setup and bridge between S1 and S2 takes an excruciating four full episodes. And up till that point the ensemble of new characters (including the lead actor) can't adequately carry any of those episodes. Honestly, they're all pretty boring..lacking a solid storyline, or any truly interesting characters (good or bad) for the audience to get into. They just come off as near four hours of fill to get back to the main story...(which once again turns out to be very thin). Also it's another in a long list of shows that willingly insult the intelligence of its' audience by readily feeding it premises that are not believable, or at best exceptionally simple-minded. Season one was somewhat effective, but the second is just a mess...and so poorly written, it just ultimately winds up being bizarrely stupid. The third season once again lacks interest.. and for many the end of the series comes near the midpoint (S3E4)..from that point onward there's little incentive to continue... minus a solid script, they're mostly void of any merit. There are lots of shows deserving second and more seasons.. unfortunately this is nowhere near one of them.
  • This show, I decided to watch because I had nothing else, and then it reeled me in. Such terrific acting all round, from top to bottom, casting did a good job. Storylines really really good, kept you guessing just when you thought you had figured things out! Lol. I found Rogue an edge of your seat, binge worthy fabulous show. I loved it and am so disappointed there is not a fifth series. Ten stars and two thumbs up from me for Rogue!

I think the show is marketed the wrong way. From the synopsis, you would think it is about a undercover cop seeking revenge. This actually turn some people off because they think it is very cliché. Ask me how I know.

I thought the same thing too and was very unwilling to watch. I did not changed my mind after watching the pilot but it the pace was entertaining enough and I quite like Newton so I continue to watch. By episode 3 onwards, i was hooked and even more so. By episode 7 and 8, I really loved it. The show have enough twist and turn and very good acting. The finale tied up 90% of the loose ends and solved the mystery. I hate shows that leaves up with a big cliffhanger even worse if there is no subsequent season. So you can watch this knowing that the mystery will be solved and you can have closure.I am looking forward to season 2 but even if its not renewed, I did not wasted the 10 hours I spent on season 1.

Beside Newton,I loved the Matthew Beard who play MAX. Ian Tracy who played Lucas Mitch is also great. He also acting in Bates Motel and Continuum but I think he is best here !Marton Csokas who played Jimmy and Joshua Sasse are also good for their roles.
  • One thing is for sure, you just can't rate this with a 6 or a 7. It's definately a 9, maybe a 10 for me. And it sure is worth your time to watch all episodes back to back. Ethan Kelly makes everything look so simple from the moment he appears in the series, but without being the classic "i am the best and i can't be killed" american hero way. Cole Hauser at his top!!!
  • I really wanted to like this show. It looked great with nice cinematography and a decent looking cast but then I watched it for 20 minutes. The cinematography ended up being repetitive and overly stylistic to the extent that it became a distraction. It seemed like all of the scenes were dark with overly done dramatic lighting. Great cinematography should not call attention to itself and after a shor time this does that all too often. The reason seems to be in line with this show's theme and biggest problems. Rogue wants to be this edgy stylistic show but fails miserably because it tries to hard to do that with not enough substance to start with.

I do not mind the occasional f-bomb but when it comes as often as it does in this show laced with overly dramatic stupid dialouge it falls flat. Just because you can swear and get naked does not mean that you have a good show. If you are going to take me on that kind of a journey then at least have a reason to do it beyond cheap seansationalism. Just because you can does not mean that you should. F words and sex scenes do not make a show great and "edgy" and it looks like that was the driving focus for the creators of this show. We are going to do a bunch of stuff not allowed on network TV and critics will fall all over us for being edgy. Unfortunately they left out just about everything else that make a story interesting and engaging. By the way from several reviews I have read the critcs are not impressed nor was I.
  • HangingOver21 June 2013
This show is intelligent. It develops over time. Normally, I can sort out after 2 episodes just how it will end. Not this time. In general I assume these types of shows plan for season 1 and dig themselves an impossible hole to dig out of.

This show went the smart way and just did it right from the beginning - but you have to stick with it. Too bad the morons of the world gave it a 6. I would have said 8 but slapped a 9 on it to try balance out the idiots. This show is simply well done.

Granted a second season. I will watch, for sure. No idea where it will go. And that is a good thing! Hope for a 3rd!

Great show but Thandie's role was to unbelievable just as the rest of the characters surrounding her in the first and second season thankfully Cole was added to the show and breathed a ray of hope into it.
  • Gritty and a new-James Bond dark mood series. Very spell binding in the plots and filming. The characters all give a good account of themselves in very dour but solid performances. The filming is in the old 1940s film-noir style -but in full dark dramatic colour. The light and shadows are nicely played with in enhancing the overall brooding drama and atmosphere. The dialogue is sparse but still brings forth a flowing and well-told story. I'm disappointed that IMDb staff has put Ms.Thandie Newton second in the cast list. It makes one wonder why they made that bizarre selection when Thandie is THE superstar of the show. She deserves to be respected as the driving central element in this riveting show.

A real thriller drama that only becomes more fun to watch as the story develops, you gotta have patience to really appreciate this suspense. Season 1 starts with San Jose Detective Grace Travis (Thandie Newton) going undercover, on loan to Oakland PD, working along the docks to infiltrate crime boss Jimmy Laszlo's (Marton Csokas) outfit. Grace is compromised after striking a physical relationship with ruthless boss Jimmy, hell-bent on revenge and justice she finds herself chasing a rabbit down the hole to find the killer of her son within the outfit..., And that's just the beginning. Great storyline that keeps up the suspense, you gotta watch all the seasons to really appreciate it. I give it a 10 out of 10.
