We open with Piper Chapman telling us how everything related to baths is her happy place and now it isn't because of prison. We meet her fiancée Larry and see the dynamic of their relationship. Then we see how Piper starts managing this new experience(badly). She screws up almost immediately by telling the cook her food is awful. We also see lots of flashbacks of Piper and Alex, her lesbian lover and the one who got her in this mess. And for a dramatic end, we find out she's on the same prison.

All in all, not bad for a first episode but I wouldn't say "Wow!" as everything was fine. The comedy was good and you meet a lot of characters for this journey.
  • The first episode had various scenes that resembled the real life events of female prison inmates.

For example the anxiety faced by those who are handing themselves in after a long period of time.

I personally feel this first episode could be quite dull at some moments but others are quite captivating so overall I would give it a 70/100.

I would definitely recommend this episode as it does lead onto a much more deeper storyline in next episode which then really beings to get the ball rolling.

Orange Is The New Black is an Emmy winning TV show directed by Jenji Kohan who surprisingly got the inspiration for the show due to her experience in women's prisons.

This is my first time watching the TV show so my opinion will be from an outsider, not a fan. The first thing I've noticed is that it's very explicit; the first scenes already consisted of naked women showering, which I think it's a good thing because lesbianism is a taboo subject in contemporary society. This is further seen in certain scenes where we witness women during intercourse. It's natural thing and we shouldn't censor such things. I like how it's very realistic and it doesn't sugarcoat any aspect of the women's prison (of what I've seen so far).

Moving on to the actual content and plot of the story, I really liked it. I especially enjoyed the flashbacks in scenes, which really established and structured an inmate's character. It gives us a sense of what they are as a person and it's interesting how different they were before and after being in prison. In that small space of time, it sort of shows a little bit of character development. The show is very funny, the jokes are witty and not corny, the acting (especially by Taylor Schilling) is amazing, she puts a lot of emotions in her lines and her crying scenes are very believable; this also goes to the rest of the inmates that's been introduced so far. It's as if we're actually really there with them, in that prison.

Obviously, I've only watched the first 2 episodes so it's explainable why it's still a bit dragged out and a little dull for me but I will most definitely continue with the TV series as the character's backstory as to why they end up in prison is something that fascinates me.
  • Orange is the New Black, a new kind of story, a story we don't usually see, today I saw the first episode of it, one thing the makers have to say about the episode is that there is a lot of music that can be given in many places. I think so. The rest of the things are really good, the dialogue delivery is good enough, the acting of all the actors and actresses is very realistic and good. The ending of the first episode is very interesting and the way the story is started is very interesting and the intelligence of the writer can be seen by watching the story of this episode. The conflict between the good and the bad of the main character is shown here, which we are very happy to see as a spectator. The prop scene in the prison is very much in line with the story and we feel really good sitting in the audience.
  • I wanted to be prepared for the &7th season so I am watching over again. I hate to see it end but I truly believe it has run its course. Enough of that. I will talk about the first episode. Piper is my least favorite. I don't dislike her I just get irritated. I don't think her relationship with Alex is believable and her flashbacks are annoying. Once she arrives at Litchfield many characters are introduced. They are strong characters and they make you curious as to what their story is and why they are there. Also Aleida treating Daya like that. Latina mothers would never let someone disrespect their kid like that no matter how mad she was at her.
  • Warning: Spoilers
Piper (Taylor Schilling) participated in the lifting of a suitcase of drug money for her lesbian lover, Alex (Laura Prepon). As a 22 year old, Piper was head over heels for Alex, so her willingness to help in the act of drug smuggling resulted in implication in a criminal act. Cut to 10 years later and Piper just about avoids the statute of limitations, turning herself in, surrendering to a 15 month prison term. Of course, the awkwardness of going through the arrest process, following the protocols of a new inmate getting frisked, enduring two idiots who can't figure out that the computer for taking her picture was unplugged, being introduced to inmates she will be seeing a lot of (some friendly, some quirky, some insane, some rude, and plenty of whistles, crude come-ons, and dirty looks), and meeting her parole officer. The episode alternates through different points of the plot, such as Piper's sexual relationships with her fiancé (Jason Biggs) and Alex, her coming to terms with what she done and the time in prison she will have to serve, telling her family of the crime (and her lesbianism), and the surrendering process itself. Being rushed while taking a shower, insulting the food prepared by a respected (and somewhat feared) "captain of the kitchen", Red (a barely recognizable Kate Mulgrew, a far cry from her days as Captain of the Enterprise on Star Trek: Voyager), and receiving a "special meal" (bloody tampon!) as a "reward" for her vocal response to the "cuisine". Meeting her roomies and learning of the rules inside are also a part of this introduction of the show. While not as maddening as the men prison drama, "Oz", the prison populace is still very much a jungle you must survive in: Piper will need to make friends and not continue to say the wrong things if she is to get along well on the inside. "Orange is the New Black" is really a comedy intermingling with the realism of screwing up in life and paying the piper (pun intended). We see a fondling within the jungle, and to keep from being gobbled up will take bonding with ladies and making her own place within the prison. Schilling is a dynamo in the lead, equal parts sexy (see her dance tease for Prepon) and naïve (she speaks to Biggs about "getting ripped in prison", developing a toned, fit body after her "stress eating" has supposedly caused her to look not so great). She realizes the gravity of her mistake, is willing to do her time, but must learn how to behave and know what to say (and how to say it). She has spent ten years trying to escape her past, but owning up to her crime puts her in the uncomfortable spot of a confinement with a population of women she would never hang around with on the outside. Natasha Lyonne comes off nutty as a fruitcake and the show has an assortment of fascinating faces (quite a gallery of bad ass mamas with attitude, loose-lipped wackos, and even a few friendly, chatty sorts willing to befriend Piper and take her under their wing). The prison looks appropriately scary and unpredictable, as it should to someone used to suburbia, beaches, and freedom from the darkest places that harvested inmates seen in the slammer. That Alex will factor into Piper's life inside the prison leaves us wondering just what will happen onward through the series.
  • I had been warned, as most people probably have, that this show has a good amount of lesbian sex scenes. But it still caught me off guard that literally about ten seconds in, all of a sudden, they shove one in there. There isn't even a plot yet! I'm not against sex scenes or anything; I just want them to be there to progress the storyline. However, all of these scenes in this episode did pretty much nothing to do just that.

Now enough about that topic; I was getting sick of talking about it just writing it. The big thing that hit me about this show was, well, that nothing hit me about it. Was the acting bad? No. Was the acting incredible? No. It was just... Good. My reaction about the acting was basically my reaction about everything else in the show. Nothing popped out that said to me whether the show was good or bad. Everything was just okay, which, looking back on it, is actually a bad thing. This is the FIRST episode of a very promising Netflix television show. It needed something to draw viewers in, but there was absolutely nothing besides the sex scenes which were most likely there to create buzz around the show. I will be watching the next episode in the hopes that there is something more noteworthy.

I give Season One Episode One of Orange is the New Black 5/10
  • I watched for 15 minutes and I thought it was boring. Then it became disgusting. Who cares?
