By 1850, St. Louis had become the largest U.S. city west of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and the second-largest port in the country, with a commercial tonnage exceeded only by New York City.
The US Army cavalry soldiers, likely from the 2nd Dragoons Regiment, are depicted armed with M1859 Sharps Carbines. As the show takes place in 1857, these weapons had not yet gone into production. The 2nd Dragoons were deployed with the Springfield Model 1855 Rifled Carbine during the Utah War.
The show depicts the Mormons attempting to buy Fort Bridger. The actual purchase of the fort took place two years before the events of the show.
