  • I remember seeing the movie posters of Ivan megharoopan when it was released. They had a hint of a B grade movie feel to it, maybe done to somehow increase the box office collections. In any case that did not happen. The movie had only a few days run in theatres despite bagging 4 state awards.

Finally saw this movie on DVD having the same B grade like poster but it was a really pleasant experience and unlike any other movie seen in recent times. The movie is very well crafted and is a remarkable achievement for the first time director P.Balachandran. All the actors have done a wonderful job and Prakash Bare lives as the titular KP Madhavan Nair.Cinematography and Music are also really good and they very well complements the spirit of the movie. The movie's portrayal of the legendary poet Kunhiraman Nair is somewhat one dimensional and focuses mainly on his relationship with various women during different stages of his life. Dialogues may seem taken out of a school textbook at times. A tighter script could have made Ivan megharoopan an all time classic.
  • This movie will work only for people who have a thing for self-told biographies.

Ivan Megharoopan dives into the life & times of the famous Malayalam poet, from the perspective of the film-makers and not the characters. As a result, it slows the pace of the movie terribly, inducing boredom from the first 10 minutes. Dialogs & sequences are bold, but since the screenplay sways in its own speed, the viewing experience diminishes to almost zero. Songs come to the rescue, for sure.

Performances by all the lead characters are good, as are played by good actors. Women in here crack a punch.

Hands down, a worthy topic is chosen of how the poet would inculcate different cultures by living with people, wandering as a nomad, getting along as a people's guy. But, from a narrower perspective & at a time when crime against women is India & elsewhere is increasing manifold, the narration could be misinterpreted as a misogynist's guide.

BOTTOM LINE: Recommended for niche audience, who want to know about the author. 3 out of 10!
