Girlfriends Films, a venerable Lesbian video company, added a hetero sex subsidiary featuring product from veteran B. Skow, who had previously made an occasional Lesbian video for them. First entry for the label VOILA is an interesting feature indicating success for the venture.
Around the same time the Lesbian competitor Girl Candy Films launched its own hetero branch Hard Candy Films, which had Nica Noelle directing an excellent set of movies, but soon pulled the plug on the operation, and now many of them, e.g., THE PSYCHOTHERAPIST, are expensive collectors' items, out of print.
Kris Slater receives top billing and gives a solid acting performance (always remaining in character, no mean feat for XXX) as Tom, happily married to Liz (Penny Pax) but they decide on experimentation to enliven their relationship. In porn that has always meant swinging,
His wife Penny Pax invites over two attractive lesbians, and the video gets underway in familiar territory as dom Yurizan Beltran has at it with newcomer Gigi on a couch, Penny watching. Kris later joins her in voyeur action but they do not get involved in sex with their visitors.
Early on Kris (clothed) had premature ejaculation almost immediately when Yurizan did a lap dance on him, so with 42 minutes lapsed I got the impression that Kris would be a non-sex front man for a lesbian video. But instead the couple tries again only with one girl this time, Veruca James as the title character Voila (marketing throws in: "Wah-lah, as if by magic" as a fairly condescending tag line}. She has a very sexy threesome with the couple and Kris's bonafides as a cocksman are demonstrated.
Feature's pace is slow and deliberate, in keeping with the parent label's realistic approach to presenting explicit sex. After a brief Pax masturbation scene in the shower, where she's joined for a moment by Kris (not clear whether this is fantasy or happening for real), they return to normalcy with routine activities like breakfast together. But Penny is up to something, and soon Kris finds a "Dear John" letter from her: she's left him cold ("you can throw out my things") to live with Voila.
Kris is understandably despondent, perking up a bit when his third cousin by marriage Dana DeArmond shows up with her drunken boyfriend (Earl Slate) and threatens to steal the movie away from the leads with a vibrant, infectious performance. She plays footsie with both men and emphasizes the pseudo- incest angle of "cousins" in the currently popular manner.
Kris receives a late birthday present from Penny, a cell phone with note that she will call him someday when ready. Dana visits him with Dani Daniels, and the two have a strong lesbian sex scene, with Kris not joining in. Instead he receives a phone call from Penny but she is scared off when Dana angrily interrupts the phone call and makes Kris look bad in his wife's eyes (having two women over for sex).
Key plot twist is Voila suddenly appearing in Kris's kitchen after a year's passed and seducing him. Supposedly Penny has left her and will probably return to Kris. Finale has Kris & Voila in bed together two months later, when she asks him: "What would you do if Liz rings the doorbell right now?". Of course, the doorbell rings and we're left with a freeze-frame open ending.
Just a couple of rewrites away from being a really good porn saga, VOILA is still satisfying as a storyline video with hot sex and interesting characters. I'm looking forward to watching more Skow videos for Girlfriends, which range across many genres.
