Jake Peralta, an immature but talented NYPD detective in Brooklyn's 99th Precinct, comes into immediate conflict with his new commanding officer, the serious and stern Captain Ray Holt.
After shooting each scene a few times verbatim, the actors then shoot a few more when they improvise to make the scene funnier if possible. This method is also used on Parks and Recreation, co-created by Brooklyn Nine-Nine co-creator Michael Schur.
Captain Holt pays particular attention to procedure and yet the holster he wears is incredibly unsafe. It features a thumb-break retention strap that can interfere with drawing his revolver during a confrontation. It also leaves the trigger-guard of his revolver uncovered, increasing the likelihood of a negligent discharge while drawing or holstering, and making it possible for someone trying to take his revolver to fire it in the holster.
