Over the years, horror juggernauts Blumhouse Productions have built a stable of creatives that they’ve been able to pull from to make their movies. So, what do they get when they team up director Christopher Landon with writers Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach (Fantasy Island and Truth or Dare)? They get their newest suspense flick, Drop.
Drop is about a young, widowed mother named Violet (Meghann Fahy from The White Lotus) who, in an effort to jumpstart her social life, makes a date on a dating app with a guy named Henry (Brandon Sklenar from 1923). The two meet at a romantic high-rise restaurant, and things seem to be going well. Except for the fact that their date is constantly being interrupted by someone who keeps sending Violet photo drops on her phone. The drops go from annoying to threatening,...

David Ayer's new action film, A Working Man, starring Jason Statham, is hitting theaters this Friday. The two hope to recreate the box office success they had with 2024's The Beekeeper. If the film proves successful, Ayer recently revealed that he could envision the movie launching a brand-new action franchise and says he would be up for directing a sequel.
Ayer's latest collaboration with Statham, A Working Man, is based on Chuck Dixon’s novel Levon’s Trade, which is the first of a twelve-book series. When asked by The Hollywood Reporter whether he would make a sequel, given the film's ending, Ayer noted that there was plenty of source material to pull from and believes a sequel is in the cards if given the green light. "Yeah, absolutely. Chuck wrote 12 books," Ayer said. "It’s a really interesting character. I feel like we cracked the code with Jason and worldizing Chuck’s novels.

Expectations can run high whenever a buzzworthy filmmaker makes the leap from indie to mainstream. And Radio Silence — Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett, Chad Villella and former member Justin Martinez — certainly had a lot to live up to after V/H/S. This production collective’s rousing contribution to the 2012 anthology film not only impressed audiences and critics, the same segment also caught the attention of 20th Century. This led to the studio recruiting the rising talent for a hush-hush found-footage project later titled Devil’s Due.
However, as soon as Radio Silence’s anticipated first film was released into the wild, the reactions were mostly negative. Devil’s Due was dismissed as a Rosemary’s Baby rehash but dressed in different clothes; almost all initial reviews were sure to make — as well as dwell on — that comparison. Of course, significant changes were made to Lindsay Devlin’s pre-existing script; directors Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett...

Freaky and Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon was supposed to be heading into production on Scream 7 soon – but that project has turned out to be so troubled, he had to activate his ejector seat and get out of there. Things are looking good for him now that he has escaped from that mess, as he recently signed on to direct the werewolf thriller Big Bad, and now Deadline reports that he’ll be directing the “fast-paced thriller” Drop for Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes, the production company team that has previously brought us the Purge franchise. Drop has even found its lead already: Meghann Fahy, who was recently seen on season 2 of The White Lotus.
Details on the story Drop will be telling have not been revealed. All we know is the “fast-paced thriller” description and the fact that the screenplay has been written by Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach,...

Christopher Landon, the former director of Scream 7, will now helm the werewolf movie Big Bad. Landon stepped down from Scream 7 after the firing of star Melissa Barrera and the exit of Jenna Ortega. Big Bad could give Landon an opportunity to explore a new subgenre of horror after bringing many others to the screen.
Former Scream 7 director Christopher Landon has signed on to helm the new movie Big Bad. Although Landon was previously attached to direct the Scream sequel, he stepped down following production company Spyglass' decision to fire star Melissa Barrera after she shared pro-Palestine posts on social media. Shortly afterward, it was announced that her co-star Jenna Ortega had also dropped out of the project, for unspecified reasons.

Traditionally the first month of the year has been a dumping ground as studios have steered clear of the residual glow of the holiday blockbusters and the prestige films audiences try to catch up on before the awards begin to air. January may not be the best time to launch your new $300 million budgeted tent pole franchise picture, but it has proven a great launch pad for moderately budgeted horror films.
Over the past ten years we have seen films such as Texas Chainsaw (2013- $21.7 million opening), Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (2014- $18.3 million opening), Insidious: The Last Key (2018- $29.5 million opening), Escape Room (2019- $18.2 million opening), Scream (2022- $33.8 million opening) and M3GAN (2023- $30.4 million opening) show that audiences like to kick off their new years with a little bit of spine tingling scares.

The hits keep coming on Scream 7. Weeks after Melissa Barrera was let go from the upcoming sequel, followed close behind by news that Jenna Ortega also left, director Christopher Landon announced via Twitter today that he formally exited the project weeks ago.
The filmmaker said, “I guess now is as good a time as any to announce I formally exited Scream 7 weeks ago. This will disappoint some and delight others. It was a dream job that turned into a nightmare. And my heart did break for everyone involved. Everyone. But it’s time to move on. I have nothing more to add to the conversation other than I hope Wes’ legacy thrives and lifts above the din of a divided world. What he and Kevin created is something amazing and I was honored to have even the briefest moment basking in their glow.”

It’s been a tumultuous week for the Scream franchise, to say the very least, with franchise co-stars Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega no longer involved in the upcoming Scream 7.
Barrera was fired from the production by Spyglass while it was announced earlier today that Ortega is no longer attached to reprise her own role from the previous two movies, and Variety brings a bit more clarity to the behind the scenes chaos in a brand new report this evening.
Variety details, “It seemed to some fans like the planned sequel was collapsing in real time. However, even before Barrera was fired, plans for the next Scream were being retooled. Ortega’s exit had required the creative team to make some alterations, according to individuals with knowledge, but there were still hopes that the actress might be convinced to come back for some sort of cameo. One day after Melissa Barrera was let go from the upcoming Scream 7, Deadline is now reporting that Jenna Ortega will also not be returning for the slasher sequel.
Deadline clarifies, “This has nothing to do with the fallout from Melissa Barrera‘s firing yesterday by Spyglass Media over that actress’ social media repostings on the Hamas-Israel conflict; nor does it have to do with the actress asking for an end to her Scream contract.”
The website also notes, “We understand that Ortega’s exit from the next Scream was discussed before the actors strike. A script for Scream VII is not ready yet, and the Primetime Emmy nominee has to head to Ireland in April to shoot the second season of Netflix’s Wednesday which will go into the summer.”

Scream and Scream VI star Melissa Barrera will reportedly not be returning for the upcoming Scream 7, it was first reported in this week’s digital issue of Variety magazine.
THR adds, “Filming had not begun, and development had been slow amid the actors and writers strikes. Now, Spyglass is expected to recalibrate plans following Barrera.”
Melissa Barrera’s Sam Carpenter is the leading member of the “Core Four,” the new group of survivor characters that have been leading this latest trilogy for the Scream franchise.
Sam Carpenter has been a particularly important character for the saga as she’s the daughter of original Scream killer Billy Loomis, and Barrerra was expected to return for Scream 7 alongside Jenna Ortega, Mason Gooding, and Jasmine Savoy Brown. Ortega’s involvement in Scream 7 is also up in the air at this time, with no confirmation she’ll be returning.

According to THR, the Paranormal Activity franchise is set to become a stage play. I can’t say I saw that one coming.
Simon Friend, who commissioned the Life of Pi stage play, picked up the license to Paranormal Activity and is seeking to bring it to the West End. Grey House scribe Levi Holloway has signed on to write the play, but the project is still in early development at this time. Although I wouldn’t necessarily call myself a fan of the franchise, I’ve got to admit that I’m a little curious about how they plan to adapt the found-footage story to the stage.

Grey House scribe Levi Holloway has signed on to write the play, but the project is still in early development at this time. Although I wouldn’t necessarily call myself a fan of the franchise, I’ve got to admit that I’m a little curious about how they plan to adapt the found-footage story to the stage.

Scream fans were hit with bad news when it was announced that directing duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, better known as Radio Silence, would not return to helm Scream VII. After bringing the franchise back with 2022's Scream and finding even more success with Scream VI, the duo is too busy on their upcoming monster movie project for Universal to return, but their announced replacement, Christopher Landon, leaves the franchise in very capable hands that should make fans very excited.
What Radio Silence accomplished by revitalizing the Scream franchise was no easy task. Taking on a legacy spearheaded by the late master of suspense Wes Craven would make anyone stepping into those shoes nervous, but Radio Silence approached the job as fans first.
They respected what Craven and screenwriter Kevin Williamson created, and they wanted to do them justice while also adding their own spin to make sure their...

Bloody Disgusting was the first to tell you this morning that Radio Silence (V/H/S, Southbound, Ready or Not, Scream, Scream VI) will not be returning to direct the upcoming Scream 7 due to scheduling issues, and we also let you know that Christopher Landon was in talks to direct. Well, it looks like it’s now official.
The Hollywood Reporter made it official this afternoon, reporting that Spyglass “has tapped Christopher Landon, a scary movie stalwart whose credits include the Happy Death Day movies as well as body-switching horror-comedy Freaky, to direct the seventh installment of the long-running franchise.” This according to “multiple sources,” THR also notes.
Scream and Scream VI directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Radio Silence) will remain on board as executive producers, as will Chad Villella.
No word yet on who will be writing Scream 7, but THR reports that Melissa Barrera and Mason Gooding are expected to return.

Scream 7 is confirmed to be in development with a new director, Christopher Landon, taking over from Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin. The previous installment, Scream VI, achieved the highest domestic box office revenue for the franchise, leading to the decision to proceed with Scream 7. Christopher Landon is known for directing successful horror films like Happy Death Day and Freaky.

In 2022, the fan-favorite slasher franchise was revived under the guidance of directing duo Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, who are part of the filmmaking collective known as Radio Silence. This post contains spoilers for "We Have a Ghost."
Christopher Landon, the filmmaker behind movies like "Happy Death Day," "Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones," and "Freaky," has made the jump to the world of streaming with his newest film, "We Have a Ghost." The Netflix project is a family-friendly adventure about a family who moves into a creaky old house, only to get internet famous when they discover that it's haunted by a sad, silent ghost named Ernest, played by David Harbour.
As the film progresses, a disgraced CIA agent (Tig Notaro) learns of Ernest's existence and manages to capture him as a way to resurrect a scrapped, off-books agency program designed to study supernatural entities. In the current cut of the movie, the agent ultimately has a change of heart and lets the ghost loose, and Ernest commandeers a Lyft to take him back to the house to save the family.

The discovery that their house is haunted by a ghost named Ernest makes Kevin’s family a social media sensation. But when Kevin and Ernest get to the bottom of the mystery of Ernest’s past, they become targets of the CIA.
There was a certain sense of charm, wonder, and childlike optimism brimming all throughout Christopher Landon’s We Have a Ghost that I couldn’t get enough of. In many ways, this is a film that is heavily inspired by Steven Spielberg’s filmography, most notably E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial. Heck, at times it might even borrow from that film too much, but I love that Landon was hugely inspired by so many great projects for this film.

Christopher Landon is the reigning king of the horror-comedy, having directed time-loop chiller “Happy Death Day” (and its underrated follow-up) and “Freaky,” the only body-swapping slasher movie you’ll ever need. His latest, “We Have a Ghost” on Netflix, is his attempt at a more family-friendly hybrid.
The new movie follows a family (led by Anthony Mackie) who move into a house haunted by a schlubby specter (David Harbour). What follows is a wild bouillabaisse of different tones and genres, as it flits through being – at various points and sometimes all at once – a social media satire, a murder mystery and, somehow, a spy thriller.
In some ways, though, “We Have a Ghost” feels like the movie Landon has been working toward his entire career.
Landon has always been interested in the cheeky mixing-and-matching of styles. One of his first sold (and produced) screenplays was for “Disturbia” back in 2007.

News of a fresh horror comedy from Christopher Landon, director of the joyously silly “Happy Death Day” and its sequel, should be greeted with cautious optimism at the very least. He’s been working in the space for some time now, having also co-written and directed “Freaky,” “Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse” and the more straightforward “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones,” and understands how to thread that particular needle better than most. His latest feels like both a natural next step and also something of a departure: a family-friendly haunted-house story releasing on Netflix. Unlike his previous efforts, however, “We Have a Ghost” fails to capture what makes this particular genre hybrid so much fun.

A major Paranormal Activity creator is done with the franchise after Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin. The found footage horror franchise focuses on different families as they are haunted by mysterious supernatural demonic creatures. With monsters in every corner, surviving in Paranormal Activity is difficult, especially as the demon Tobi continues to hunt humans across the globe.
Despite the success of the Paranormal Activity franchise, producer Jason Blum says the series should end after Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin. Evidently, he isn't alone. In an interview with IndieWire, a regularly returning Paranormal Activity director, writer, and producer, Christopher Landon, explained that he isn't particularly interested in returning to the franchise at all. Check out his quote below:

Paranormal Activity screenwriting stalwart Christopher Landon shared a surprising studio note he got on one of the sequels in the popular horror franchise. The found footage series began with the original 2009 haunted house film, created by filmmaker Oren Peli. It quickly spawned a franchise, which Landon became involved in as a screenwriter starting with 2010's Paranormal Activity 2. He would go on to write the next three films and the most recent outing, 2021's Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, while also taking the directorial reins for 2014's Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones in addition to his screenwriting duties.
Recently, IndieWire sat down with Landon to discuss his latest directorial outing, the Netflix horror-comedy We Have a Ghost. During the conversation, he discussed his history with the Paranormal Activity franchise and revealed a bizarre studio note he was given while developing one of the sequels. Confirming an unwritten rule of the horror genre,...

Filmmaker Christopher Landon is seemingly interested in surprising fans with his projects. Though he started his filmmaking career with more traditionally dark horror, such as “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones,” his most recent projects have taken fun concepts and flipped them on their heads with the thrillers, “Happy Death Day” (and its sequel) and “Freaky.” Now, it appears he’s doing the same in “We Have a Ghost,” and he’s landed an all-star cast to help tell the story.

Over the last decade plus, writer-director Christopher Landon has quietly crafted a consistently engaging, stealth career as a filmmaker deeply conversant in the tropes, traditions, and conventions of the horror genre and a willing subverter of those tropes, traditions, and conventions. It ranges from the Rear Window with a coming-of-age combo of Disturbia in 2007, through key contributions to the found footage sub-genre, including Paranormal Activity 2-4 and Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, through the less successful teen comedy-undead hybrid of Scouts Guide to the Apocalypse, to the double career triumph of Happy Death Day and Happy Death Day 2U. His latest genre contribution, Freaky, a Freaky Friday meets Friday the 13th horror-comedy, doesn’t quite the Happy Death Day series for its brilliantly absurdist riff(s)...

As someone who has been a longtime fan of Christopher Landon’s directorial output over the years, his latest film—Freaky—is yet another home run for the filmmaker behind other genre entries like the Happy Death Day series, Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, and Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones. Co-starring Kathryn Newton and Vince Vaughn, Freaky follows an unassuming high schooler named Millie (Newton), who ends up the latest target of the infamous Blissfield Butcher (Vaughn), but instead of becoming his victim, Millie ends up switching bodies with him after he attacks her with a ritual dagger, and the race is on to get her personage back before they’re both stuck living out the rest of their lives inside each other’s bodies.

Freaky is a teen slasher comedy that blends multiple classic genre storylines. It takes the body switching premise of Freaky Friday, then combines it with the bloody carnage of Prom Night and Scream. It pokes fun at generic horror tropes and stereotypical characters with a cleverer than expected script. Vince Vaughn is hilarious as a teenage girl in a serial killer's body. One scene in particular had me laughing almost to tears. Freaky surpasses expectations and stands above recent Blumhouse films.
Freaky begins with two teen couples hanging out at a creepy mansion. Their parents are gone and it's party time. They drink, hook up, and swap stories of the legendary Blissfield Butcher (Vince Vaughn). Several people have been murdered over the years, but there's no real evidence the killer actually exists. The teens roam around and admire the bizarre artifacts scattered throughout the house. A jeweled dagger is the prize of the collection.

The Killer Inside Me: Landon Continues Recycled Tropes for Latest Buffet of Thrills and Kills

Ancient myths, religious otherworldliness, and culturally tailored re-imaginings of classic tropes or creatures populate the landscape of Latino horror. Although genre films have been present in Latin American cinema since the 1930s, over the last two decades — with the advent of digital filmmaking and increased government investment in the art form — they have exponentially flourished in the region.
Meanwhile, in the United States, Latinx audiences are known to be enthusiastic (and paying) fans of all things horror, even if Hollywood projects rarely include Latinos on screen. There are still few genre features by or about American Latinos out there, but up-and-coming storytellers are striving to change that. As streamers and studios vow to support emerging voices in entertainment, this is a space ripe for growth.

Nabbing attention with the promising horror flick Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (2014), writer/director Christopher Landon took a sharp turn toward the combination of ironic humor of horror with Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse (2015) and then hit it big with Happy Death Day (2017), followed by its sequel, Happy Death Day 2U (2019). His new film, Freaky, keeps the setting among young people, while introducing a somewhat older man into the equation. Instead of a time-loop premise, this time Landon plays around with the body-swap formula. Paranormal Activity is a tiny movie that had a huge impact on the entertainment industry. Not only did it become one of the most profitable films in Hollywood history after making almost $200 million on a $350,000 budget and help popularize the found footage genre, but it was a major early success for Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions. They’ve since gone on to shape the world of modern horror cinema, the highlight of all this being the incredible Get Out.
Despite that success, though, the franchise has been dormant since 2015’s Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension. Last year, however, we began to hear that a new entry in the series was being developed and now, Blum has been opening up about it a bit and said he’d love to bring back series star Katie Featherston for the pic.

Without fail, at the start of every year, there’s a lot of chatter about how January is the prime dumping ground for “bad horror,” and I gotta tell you, it really bums me out. Sure, there will always be misfires released in any given month of the year, but as a whole, I love the month of January for horror, simply because it seems like for every dud, there are a few films that really swing for the fences, and you just never know what you’re going to get. And that’s the kind of stuff that keeps me going as a horror fan.
At some point in time, January got the reputation for being a wasteland for film releases of sorts, but even back during the 2000s, we were still getting a smattering of quality genre films during that month: Walter Hill’s Supernova in 2000, The Mothman Prophecies...

Get ready for more found footage, ghostly scares as Paranormal Activity 7 is officially on the calendar. Paramount Pictures has revealed that the seventh installment of the long-running horror franchise will hit theaters in spring 2021. This comes after the series has taken quite the long break, but also comes as legacy franchises such as Saw and Halloween have had success recently. With that, Paramount and Blumhouse Productions feel the time is right for a return to the once-reliable hit-making series.
According to a new report, Paranormal Activity 7 (which doesn't yet have an official title) will hit theaters on March 19, 2021. This will break tradition for the franchise as the first four installments were all released near Halloween in October to capitalize on the demand for horror movies that time of year. That proved to be a solid strategy. The studio broke with that pattern for Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, which arrived in January.
