  • Had no real hope that this low budget, first time directed, movie would be anything good but I was pleasantly surprised - mostly...

The romantic side to this was not just your standard main actor love interest, it was a good blend of action\romance and a little Sci-Fi. No real major special effects here but it didn't need them for the story it was telling and it told it pretty well - flowed well and well acted by the main two actors. Some of the fight scenes were very poor though, I could see what the director wanted to achieve by doing it that way but really didn't work.

Not really recommended if you want either a proper romance or in depth Sci-Fi, no really gripping suspense or riveting action here - but worth a watch if you just want something light where you don't need to concentrate too much!

Bridd Cole (Austin Hébert ) lives a quiet life working in a DC office mail room of a brokerage agency. We see him do some extraordinary things on a computer and then the flirty Charlotte Parker (Alexis Carra) suddenly throws herself at him. When they return to his place for some real action...they get more than they bargained for as they go on the run, attempting to solve his life from old clues.

This is an easy going science fiction film. It could have been a made-for-TV, the writing and shooting were that mediocre. Certainly not a bad film, but one I wouldn't pay to see.

Guide: Soft 3 stars. No swearing, sex, or nudity
  • Iqbal Ahmed is a very inexperienced filmmaker. His credits are pretty sparse and "The Answer" is only the first full-length film he's directed. He also wrote and produced the film…something not uncommon with up and coming indie filmmakers. So, because of the very low budget, I am willing to cut his film a bit of slack. So, while the production values and story left a bit to be desired, there is a lot of promise and I would sure like to see more of his films in the future. The film begins with a creepy prologue. Women are being held captive as breeders by folks who dress a lot like members of the band Daft Punk! And, after they give birth, the women are viciously killed! So, it's obvious from the onset that these folks are kindness impaired! The story now jumps ahead many years. An unimpressive guy named Bridd (Austin Hébert) is working in the mail room of some stock trading company. He also looks a lot like a slightly more macho version of Sheldon from "Big Bang Theory". Who would suspect that this guy has hidden abilities that make him a bit of an action hero?! But, after going out on a date with Charlotte (Alexis Carra), they find themselves in the middle of a murder scene…and the Daft Punk wannabes are looking to kill or capture Bridd and blood and mayhem abound. Can he and Charlotte manage to elude these weirdos as well as determine who they are and what this is all about by the end of the film?

There are a lot of neat story elements and the why of all this is pretty interesting…even though Bridd almost seems to magically figure it all out at times. The notion of aliens and a hybrid species as well as why they need these hybrids is intriguing. But, unfortunately, much of the film seems rushed and not quite worked out properly— especially the relationship between Charlotte and Bridd. It seems as if parts of the story are missing…and so it all moves too quickly to be realistic. Also, the soundtrack is intrusive and repetitive. Fortunately, there are enough good parts that make me want to see more from the filmmaker and his cast. Overall, a miss…but a near-miss that is still worth seeing.
  • The lead man has no acting abilities. The lead woman is tedious as she thinks being chased by killer aliens is fun and amusing. The film has little sci fi and concentrates more on the relationship between the two. Beware of cheap contact lenses that at times light up (crap cgi) what a lacklustre crap fest of a so called film.

    Warning: Spoilers
Possible spoiler alert... I have to strongly disagree with some of these reviews. I think the hallmark of a good movie is one you would watch TWICE over time, and I kept awaiting the promised "unguesable twists and turns" right up to the end... none appeared. Several easily, even unavoidably anticipated clichés did however. How about a bad guy you leave for dead, but miraculously reanimates to take one more attempt to kill you... boy, never seen THAT one before. OR, a bad guy who shoots you, and rather than put two more in your head from a safe distance, walks up and rolls your supposedly dead body over... giving the hero the opportunity to turn the tables. Groundbreaking suspense! (yawn).

This movie is so bad. The writing is bad, the acting is bad. I was laughing at parts cause the acting and the writing were so bad at the same time.3/10 cause I did enjoy cracking jokes at the movie.
  • It should have been a lifetime Chanel origanal movie.

A gave 5 stars as this was the director/writer's first effort and I was able to watch the whole movie through with some curiosity of what the ending would bring. Where was the package from Mom for the previous 20 years. The Post Office that far behind? The "Jane of all trades" girlfriend was almost comedy relief. Also, how was this handful of "evil aliens" to colonize Earth with just a few pregnant "one time use" women taking 9 months each to bring a half-alien to Earth? Not too practical. How did the aliens get here? No ship shown. How did they bring all those gas tanks of their atmosphere with them?

In summary, I'm glad I didn't pay money for this video. Watched "free with ads" on a streaming service. I won't be looking for any future movies from this director.
  • Saw this at the IMAGINE film festival 2015 in Amsterdam. A bit of romance, a bit of humor, a bit of tension, a bit of SciFi, and a bit of mystery, all of that mixed together in this surprising movie. The story line leaves us continuously guessing what is going on, and what could reasonably follow after that. In the final Q&A the director declared this to be a "hybrid" movie, and that is precisely what we got. We see several people and follow them while several mysterious things happen. It starts a bit colorless within an office and a date between two very different colleagues, in fact an odd couple no one would have expected them to go out together. According to the director, they are opposites and that was intentional. Narratively speaking they are the actual binding elements, to guide us through various genres like Romance, SciFi, Thriller and any combination of that.

No chance to outguess in which direction the story is going to develop. Whatever you anticipated, it is totally different from what really went on. And, more importantly, it was much better than I had thought. Strange things start happening, and it is good to consider that the overall theme. It is not exactly an "Action" film as IMDb misleadingly tells us, due to the mere fact that aforementioned odd couple cannot be considered super heroes by any definition.

Some additional notes from the final Q&A with the director: They used a lot of places in his home town in Virginia, which he could use for free, knowing his budget was small. The masked men in the library were dressed as they were on purpose, as this was the only way not to give immediately away that some SciFi was involved. These masked men behaved like any military force, secret police or drug gang. That their assignment was of a totally different nature, was to become clear much later, being one of the surprising twists in the proceedings.

All in all, the low budget does not glare us in the face at all. It was surprising and very entertaining, yet I don't think it will provide for the same mix of sensations when viewed a second time. Whatever happens to the main protagonists is very unusual, even a bit far fetched, and they survive only through sheer luck. Nevertheless, the genre mix was a nice find and it kept our attention throughout the running time.
  • One of the funniest mishaps I have seen. Literally had to copy and paste and they screwed up two numbers. The 15/22 just below 0 weren't right order. Cmon guys. Amateur stuff here. Lol.

Main character is great . Could do less of scenery clips and show more of his abilities but a good solid fun movie. Hopefully there will be a sequel.

This is a sloppy movie. It really doesn't know where it wants to go and doesn't have the money to go anywhere.

    SPOILERS AHEAD

I enjoyed the two main characters and would like to see them in more. Austin Hébert comes across fairly average but that is his role too. Hard not to think of him as Martin Freeman. I see he has been in other movies I've seen but I can't remember him in those. I will if I watch them agains. Akexis Carra did well with the mixed up plot and bad script she was given. I've not seen her in anything else.

The fall Virginia landscape was lovely as it was supposed to be but at the wrong time and place.

The plot was all over the place with side trails that could have led anywhere but none did. However that kept my attention as I thought they would all wrap at at some point but they didn't.

Some of the more obvious problems with the film:

Carra's attraction to Hébert never made sense and never felt real. This transient attractive woman would not connect with the loser in the mail room. It is that typical Hollywood fantasy where the dull guy gets the girl. In this case you have the feeling for much of the movie that she is sent to spy on him. I also had the feeling both from the characters and the actors that she was the much older woman with the younger guy. Turns out that it is hard to find out the real age of either of them. Since Carra took a break from her studies at Yale to tour with Fossee then that was likely 1999 meaning she is around 40. I think Hébert is younger but again hard to say. It doesn't really matter other than another film stereotype but again it leaves us wondering about Carra's motives.

It is never explained how the aliens finally find out about Hébert. How they know where he works and lives. He gets something in the mail which they must have been tracking but for 20 years? And he appears he gets the mail in the morning and has it that day, or no later the next, at work. Then when he goes back to the apartment, it's been ransacked, and his boss is dead with the very letter opener that would have their fingerprints on it. So how is the boss involved in this? He's not. Part of the reason we suspect Carra.

Not only is this done very fast but also by aliens who we never hear speak a word of English. And while we can figure out they would track his phone - they are already at his best friend's house when he calls. So in this 24 hour period, they figure out the best friend angle too. Carra's also very quick to point out some the legal issues like Hébert's last call to his friend. Once again making us suspect she wants something from him.

If the aliens want Hébert's blood then why set him up to go running and underground making him harder to find.

Carra wants to go back into the hotel room for her purse but they don't and we see the tracking device on the purse. How did that get there? Carra only met Hébert that morning and they go out and talk about their lives and go back to his apartment. Then they are attacked and rushed off. I'd have to go back and watch the attack again but I don't think any of the aliens touches her and even if they did - they are trying to kill them so why place a tracking device on them. Another reason we suspect her.

Lots of bad timing and little things like them going out for coffee and not trying to cover up their appearance. He is rather average but she is more memorable. Typical movie inappropriate time outs for emotional matters when they are being chased and people are dying. How did the father, who appeared to be in chains, record let alone send out the message? How did it find its way to him? Do aliens only have one code for two different pairs of handcuffs and two different neckbands? How does an alien who can dodge a bullet, not dodge a canister to the head? Why does he send her off to get the blood sample when they've both seen 3 or more aliens on the site - aliens who again move faster than a bullet? Why does he start correlating missing women and babies with the map on the wall? Has he memorized all crime statistics for the last 20 years or so?

Sadly the ending is not explained. That's great in many movies but in this one, there is a scene where they say they'll capture the aliens and that will explain everything but that never happens. He calls the police to tell them something but clearly that call is not connected with what happens. Who is getting treated in the ambulance? It might be the freed woman but I'm not going back to check. Is it the body of an alien? While still at the scene of the crime, she says to him "you got our life back". So somehow the massive police chase with all the evidence against them disappears at this crime scene? And they just walk away? What story did they give the police about how they were connected? These bodies don't appear to disappear so what do the authorities do with alien bodies? What happened to the alien in the car and the blood samples? We have to assume Hébert destroyed the blood sample as he was after that. Did he hide the bodies and if so how does he explain the crashed car with the bullet hole and what will almost certainly be tested as non-human blood? Ah-h-h-h-h

Yet for all of that I enjoyed watching it. I think it was the refreshing faces and landscape that attracted me and my anticipation of where the plot could have been going but never did.

If you have a free night, which we all do with self-isolation, then it is worth the time to watch it.

My wife said to give it a 2, but I liked it more than that. The writing was clearly poor, as was the acting, but it was free, so I can't complain too much. I liked the story idea and it had a happy ending. Don't expect much more than that though.
  • Do you like overacting? This has got it. Or, hotwiring a late model Mercedes w/o a key - just strip a couple of wires and spark them together until the car ignition starts... Weird huh? Get ready for fun with a share of 'Dance-Fighting'.
  • Pretty bad camera shake from the start giving me a damn headache trying to watch it. Then 15 minutes in whilst fleeing from the bad guys, Bridd looks in through a window and sees his friend dead on the floor along with his attackers next to him, so what does Bridd do, he bangs the window... LOL Not for me, too much wobbly camera shake.
  • think about that: someone managed to collect money and to recruit a crew to make this... whatever it is! film, in any case, it is not. it is so idiotic, that it leaves deeply astonished: what he was thinking?! and how did he manage to pull this thing on?! the director and film maker, got talent, that's for sure! i mean, if he managed to bring people to put money in this... thing, and to convince actors to take part in this.. whatever it is... that's take talent! it is not as if the actors did act! hey, we don't need to go that far! they were there, that's for sure. but acting?! come-on! it would have ruined the whole thing! and if only that talent could be channeled to movie making! woo! that would make Iraqi, the director, Spielberg! now, i know, people put sweat in it. they worked hard to make it happening. but still, someone had to see it - and in this case it was me! and who will bring me back the 80 minutes i wasted on this... whatever it is??!! so if you feel that you must, but really must! - to waste about 80 minutes of your life, put laundry in your washing machine. put powder , or whatever you use, in the right box. set the program. take a comfortable chair, and place it opposite your washing machine. push the Start button. now look at the laundry machine drum rolling. it is much more exciting and satisfying than watching this... whatever it is. just don't say 'film.'
  • Storyline was great, but the movie itself was HORRIBLE!!!! Acting bad, action scenes bad... I laughed the whole time.

THE ANSWER might be advertised as a science fiction thriller but it turns out to be an indie romance with a few sci-fi touches here and there. The story is slow and sedate and the acting of a forgettable standard, featuring young actors with little discernable ability. The male protagonist is brutalised and follows a clue trail to find out who's hunting him. This film looks okay but there's very little real content.

The movie is a nice try by Iqbal to bring some romance between humans and aliens if we say so. However, I felt that movie lacks many important factual information that would allow the viewers to have a grasp of where the story has begun from. Also, the movie does not qualify to the canonical movies but I can call it a "soap sci-fi" movie where we already know what would happen by just having a simple guess. In the same line, the plot is not that sophisticated and was not really polished at least to avoid some clichés. The actress fell behind in some scenes where she didn't seem natural and I bet that many have noticed that especially when they argued. Again it's a nice watch by Iqbal but compared to the gurus of sci-fi movies, it is only a decent try. The movie could be improved only adding more mini climax to it.
  • It was a valiant effort, and technically the movie looks pretty good, but the story is a string of movie tropes and cliches. The first 20 minutes seemed like this might be an interesting little film, but by 30 minutes I was cringing, and by 35 minutes, I'd had enough. It was a good effort and no doubt good practice for the production crew.
  • It reminded me of I am number four I loved it I really did.

OK not a high budget movie starring a pack of Hollywood elites and A-listers but competently directed, written and acted. I wasn't looking for some high and mighty social value. I just wanted to be entertained. And, I was.

Sci-Fi premise is there. Aliens come to earth and remain hidden with a mission to study earth for colonization. The aliens appear as human with some differences. Our main character is the progeny of the union between and alien male and female earthling. Yes story has been done before but it still works. The female lead portrayed by the lovely Alexis Carra is caught up in all this when the aliens start hunting for the hybrid. His background is unknown to him but after 20 years it is revealed and the hunt begins.

Both leads do well. Sorry but Alexis Carra is definitely easy on the eyes and does a good job. Look to the future for more from her. So, all in all, free movie with Amazon prime, and entertainment us there. Better than watching a Meryl Streep movie any day.

The story had such promise and did manage to hook me in reasonably quickly. Unfortunately, that was as good as it got. I do like sci-fi and once does have to suspend belief, but a good sci-fi film can easily make one believe in time travel, parallel dimensions etc. The first killer for me is when a **really** beautiful babe, who did not appear to be a stranger to using her sexual attraction, falls for the main character. It took me for over half the film to realise that she was not a plant by the Secret Services. So many aspects of the story could have been explored for easily another 30 mins of quality sci-fi, the film is too short at 83 mins as is. Better acting would have been mandatory. In fact, other than the promising story the only other good thing about this film is that it is indeed short so I did not waste too much of my life. Do yourselves a favour and do what the song says, "just walk on by" and give it a miss.
  • Soooo... is this movie bad?

YES! It's terrible! Like 2/10 terrible.

    BUT Should you watch it?

OMG yes!!! Lol like 8/10 you gotta watch it!!

Story has so much potential- even though it's incredibly idiotic. It's a hate/love you see... but indeed, the story is the best part of this movie.

The acting is horrible. Like laughably horrible. You'll be entertained by how bad the acting is.

The music score is ok- repetitive as someone else said.

Shot on location in Danville VA, this movie is better than most Sci-Fi mystery movies on the market. Bridd Cole leads a mundane life, getting up at 7am, going to work, delivering mail and being bashful when it come to temp employee Charlotte. Bridd's powers make an appearance when best bud Trent steps away from his desk during a Stock Trade. Bridd's "powers" allow him to perfectly select a trade that makes the company clients a great deal of money and gets Trent a nice size portfolio as a bonus. Trent is aware of Bridd's powers and wants him to use them to their benefit. Bridd declines as he's not the type to do that sort of thing. A brief encounter with Charlotte in the supply room gives Bridd another chance to showcase his powers. When a 20yo package is finally delivered, things get really interesting. The contents resemble a hand-held game system. Bridd ignores it and proceeds with his mundane life. He gets a date with Charlotte that leads to them going on the run, when they return to his house, find it trashed and unexpected visitors hiding in the shadows. Even worse, their boss is dead on the floor in Bridd's house. The visitors are dressed in Cat Burglar Attire with Motorcycle Helmets. Trent is the 2nd victim of the visitors. The Leader (David S. Lee) barely speaks, yet conveys so much in his actions. Bridd and Charlotte partake in a bit of a scavenger hunt to get details on what is happening and why. Bridd has to climb onto a library shelf to reach the next device in the hunt. yet, when he removes it from the book encasing it, Charlotte merely puts the book back on the top of the shelves. She's the same height as Bridd and therefore should have had to climb on the shelf as he did. It becomes clear The Leader is out to create hybrids on Earth. The question of why isn't revealed until the climax. Bridd learning how to use his powers to aid in their battle against The Leader is akin to watching Rain Man. Bridd can recall in detail things he's literally only seen for few seconds. Watch his eyes when he's attacked. They glow when he's "fully charged" and can hit back as hard as Superman. This first comes to light in the library when he has to take on one of The Leader's Cronies. The Cronies carry razor sharp double edged curved knives which can cut through skin and bone like a hot knife through butter. Apparently, Bridd and his kind are potent, because one night with him and Charlotte is preggers. The Leader needs Bridd's blood because as purebreds, they cannot breathe in Earth's atmosphere, hence the helmets. There are loose ends which permit a sequel. Considering one of the Cronies disappeared with a vial of Bridd's blood and there is a little one on the way, I'd like to see a sequel to this movie. I gave it a 7/10 because it wasn't campy, overly dramatic or too techy to follow. It had an even balance of sci-fi, mystery, romance and comedy. I recommend this movie to anyone who likes invasion movies.
