Although the movie (and the sale of Lucasfilm to Disney) was not announced to the public before November 2012, both Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher said that they had discussed appearing in Episode VII and other future Star Wars films with George Lucas in the summer of 2012, several months before the sale.

After getting up from his crashed ejection seat, when Finn sees the smoke and runs toward it his shadow's directly behind him. Just as he reaches the crashed TIE fighter his shadow's in front of him to his left, but when he faces the front of the TIE fighter as it sinks into the sand, Finn's long shadow is still being cast in front of him, even though he's now facing the opposite way, then a thin long shadow is cast onto the sand in yet another direction, to the left of the exploding TIE fighter.
The stars that form the backdrop for the end credits are exactly the same stars as in the beginning of the movie.
IMAX releases presented the five-minute sequence in which Rey and Finn escape Jakku in the Millennium Falcon (which was shot with IMAX 70mm cameras) in an opened aspect ratio compared to the rest of the film.
