Three decades after the Empire's defeat, a new threat arises in the militant First Order. Defected stormtrooper Finn and the scavenger Rey are caught up in the Resistance's search for the missing Luke Skywalker.
Joel Edgerton was considered for the role of Poe Dameron, even though he had already appeared in the franchise as Luke's uncle, Owen Lars, in the prequels.

When Finn and Rey first turn and run towards the Falcon, we see an establishing shot of the ship from far away (CG shot) followed by a close up of the ship's entrance (practical set piece). The entire walkway jiggles as the two actors climb it, revealing it to be a lightweight, freestanding set leading to nowhere.
The stars that form the backdrop for the end credits are exactly the same stars as in the beginning of the movie.
IMAX releases presented the five-minute sequence in which Rey and Finn escape Jakku in the Millennium Falcon (which was shot with IMAX 70mm cameras) in an opened aspect ratio compared to the rest of the film.
