The day people learned about Carrie Fisher’s death was perhaps the saddest day in the life of a Star Wars fan. She passed away in December 2016 just a few months after they completed The Last Jedi. Still, the actress appeared in 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker.

From Walk the Line to Logan to Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, James Mangold’s career has been defined by bold choices and creative risks. Now, he tackles a galaxy far, far away with Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi, a film set 25,000 years before any other entry in the franchise. With co-writer Beau Willimon by his side, Mangold is poised to explore a truly uncharted era in the Star Wars universe — and he’s ready to defy expectations.
For Mangold, the appeal of Dawn of the Jedi lies in the creative freedom it offers. In an interview with MovieWeb, he explained, "To me, the really important aspects are the freedom to make something new. Beau and I [...] have been working on a script, and we'll see what happens [...] Do we find a way on the page to say something original?"
Originality in the Star Wars franchise is no small feat.

Hollywood doesn’t serve up lineups like this every day — a Marvel star rocking a baby bump, two Star Wars icons getting the Oscar nod, and Julia Roberts smack dab in the middle of her prime. This movie had it all: excellent performances, major star power, and a sprinkle of behind-the-scenes chaos to make it legendary.

It feels like Chris Hemsworth has been a full-fledged movie star for a long time, but he's a young pup compared to his "The Avengers" co-stars. While Hemsworth was well known in his native Australia after a series of television appearances in the 2000s, he didn't make his Hollywood feature debut until 2009 as the father of Captain James T. Kirk in J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek." So, he was only two whole years into his film acting career when he landed his thus far defining role as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since then, he's worked with a couple of legendary auteurs ("Blackhat" with Michael Mann and "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" with George Miller), but for the most part he's clearly defined, perhaps even a tad typecast, as Thor.

Somehow, Dark Helmet has returned.
In 1987, MGM and Brooksfilms released a feature-length parody of the Star Wars movie trilogy that would become almost as enduring as its target with Spaceballs, a Bill Pullman, Rick Moranis and John Candy-starring send-up of science-fiction’s three biggest films. Since then, George Lucas revived the Star Wars franchise with a second trilogy, spun off the series with countless novels, comic books, TV shows and video games, sold Star Wars to Disney for a bajillion Space Bucks and watched as the franchise bloated into a behemoth of cash-in content and merchandising that would make Yogurt proud.
However, in the nearly 40 years since Mel Brooks produced, wrote, directed and starred in Spaceballs, the comedy icon has taken a break from following every branching path that the vast, multimedia Star Wars franchise has gone down. Sunday Am Writethru: After Saturday Am update. The first weekend of 2025 — which sources have declared “a normal year” — is eyeing a grand estimated total of $105.5M for all movies, which is certainly better at +23% than the first weekend of 2024 which did $85.9M, per Box Office Mojo. Overall, it was a blasé frame of holiday carryovers without any new wide releases: one of three currently in 2025 along with Oct. 31 and Dec. 12.
The first weekend currently ranks second on a post-covid basis to that of 2023 when the holdover success of Avatar: The Way With Water and M3GAN delivered a $106.2M marketplace. We did not hear of any major theater closures (yet) due to Winter Storm Blair, which is expected to impact over 60 million people, per CNN, from the Plains to the East Coast with a mix of snow, ice and blizzard conditions. For fun, just to juxtapose that number next to the moviegoing public,...

While Harrison Ford has headlined many acclaimed releases on both the big and small screen to this date, for many, his career is mostly defined by Star Wars and Indiana Jones. Given how rich his filmography has been, it’s safe to say that being linked to one specific franchise would be frustrating for any actor, and the actor hasn’t shied away from dishing out playful jabs at the IP.

Christopher Nolan is not going to touch another film in the superhero genre after the Dark Knight trilogy. He was quick to reply with a “no” when asked the same during an interview. Nolan’s films, in which Christian Bale played Batman, are often hailed as some of the best superhero films of all time. However, it doesn’t mean Nolan is done with big franchises.

Abu Dhabi is stepping up efforts to lure more film and TV shoots to the United Arab Emirates’ capital by enhancing its new rebate, which is now set to reach up to 50% of qualified below-the-line spend starting in January.
After becoming a prime Middle East hub for Hollywood and Bollywood productions over the past decade, the Abu Dhabi Film Commission in October announced they were upping their previous 30% rebate to more than 35%. Now they have unveiled how, on top of the rebate’s new 35% baseline, productions can reach a total rebate of 50% on their principal photography and post-production costs by meeting new criteria.
These include featuring the UAE’s national history, culture and identity in the productions’ storylines; carrying out full post-production work in Abu Dhabi; and doing the main unit production of a feature film in Abu Dhabi and/or filming an entire TV series in the emirate.

Midday Friday Pm: Fanboys may have sat out last weekend for Lord of the Rings: War of Rohirrim and Kraven the Hunter, but they are back in bulk this weekend for Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 which is eyeing a potential franchise best 3-day opening, besting Sonic the Hedgehog 2‘s $72.1M. Currently the Jeff Fowler directed threequel is seeing $26M today for a $70.5M 3-day.
Who knew we’d see the day in recent years when a Paramount tentpole would dwarf a Disney one?
Disney’s Mufasa isn’t feeling the love tonight with $13.3M for Friday on its way to $35M. Disney is depending on overseas where this $200M prequel before P&a is expected to clean up. Still a wealthy marketplace for two family movies, even if Mufasa is coming up way short.

James Mangold's adventure epic "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" was a monstrously expensive film to make. One report in Forbes noted that the film may have had a price tag of $387 million, which, if accurate, would make it one of the 10 most expensive films of all time. It came at the end of an unfortunate Hollywood trend — still in the midst of petering out — of overspending on massive tentpole blockbusters in the hope that it will make billions in return. This model worked for the very, very, very, very expensive "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," which cost about $447 million to make but earned over $2 billion worldwide. In recent years, though, the flops have become way more common than the hits, and pricey productions like "The Marvels" or "The Flash" end up tanking.

This article contains spoilers for "Star Wars: Skeleton Crew" season 1, episode 3.
There are lots of interesting aliens in "Star Wars: Skeleton Crew." In fact, some of them are so interesting that you may not even realize the full extent of their impact until the end credits. One such figure is Benjar Pranic, a former member of Jod Na Nawood's (Jude Law) crew. Pranic casually walks in when Jod attempts to retrieve Sm-33 (voiced by Nick Frost) at the behest of Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), Kb (Kyriana Kratter), Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), and Neel (Robert Timothy Smith). Fully knowing that Jod should be imprisoned in the brig, the alien sets up a friendly conversation ... which soon cuts into the very unfriendly revelation that Jod now has Brutus' (Fred Tatasciore) entire crew chasing him. Turns out that retired or not, you really can't trust a pirate.

It's often repeated that Harrison Ford hates "Star Wars" and Han Solo, the movie and role that made him a star. Ford himself leans into this, such as when he destroyed a Han Solo action figure on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon."
Even while first filming the original 1977 "Star Wars," Ford wasn't the biggest fan of George Lucas' script: He memorably exclaimed "George! You can type this s***, but you sure can't say it!" Granted, it seems less that Ford despises "Star Wars" and more that he's just unsentimental about it. For him, playing Han Solo was just a successful gig, nothing more, and he's frustrated by the superfans who insist on always beating the dead tauntaun.
That unsentimental approach showed itself in his comments about being in "Star Wars" to Vanity Fair: "'Star Wars' was a big success, so I was happy to come back and play Han Solo again,...

Star Wars under Lucasfilm, helmed by George Lucas, grew to be a juggernaut in Hollywood even before Disney acquired the media giant for $4 billion. While there have been a slew of opinions about what Disney has been doing with the IP, there seems to be nothing more devastating than how George Lucas looked after finalizing the deal.
Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: A New Hope
Disney’s tenure with Star Wars has been a tumultuous one, having been plagued with an exodus of fans that has nearly caused the entire franchise to fall apart. There have been some decisions made by the company that have largely been viewed as being in bad faith, either disrespecting the characters or the fans directly.

History dictates that any space adventure set in a galaxy far, far away needs to have its compulsory comedic robot to join in on the action. In the case of "Star Wars: Skeleton Crew," that duty falls to burley, one-eyed mechanoid, Sm-33. Lurching his way through every episode and battering any villain that dares cross the show's heroes and their captain, Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), some keen-eared viewers might've already realized who is responsible for the raspy voice ringing through the wires of this hulking bot. Indeed, Disney and Lucasfilm turned to Nick Frost, the co-star of the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy, to help bring this thuggish, grouchy companion to life.
Frost's breakout role came in the cult series "Spaced" alongside Simon Pegg, before the two and the show's director, Edgar Wright, forever changed horror-comedies with 2003's "Shaun of the Dead." Wright, Pegg, and Frost would later reunite for the...

This article contains spoilers for "Star Wars: Skeleton Crew" season 1, episode 2.
Everything can seem dangerous when you're a kid lost in space, and the pirate droid Sm-33 makes no exceptions. "Star Wars: Skeleton Crew" certainly takes care to frame him as a potential threat. When the clunky, partially malfunctioning robot with an alien critter residing in its empty eye socket regains power and shuffles into the frame, you'd be forgiven for thinking you've accidentally tuned in to a space-themed horror movie and witnessing the main antagonist.
Fortunately, Sm-33 -- a not-so-subtle nod to Mr. Smee from "Peter Pan," no doubt -- is firmly on the main characters' side, at least after one of the show's young heroes, Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), convinces him that she's killed the former captain of the Onyx Cinder and taken charge. Though old and decrepit, he proves to be a useful (if unnerving) ally who...

It’s a Black Friday for the ages. Led by the unprecedented opening of Disney’s “Moana 2” and supported by an incredible second weekend for Universal’s “Wicked,” the box office soared to an estimated overall gross of $108 million, the fourth highest single day total ever recorded in U.S./Canada box office history.
The only days that topped this Black Friday are the first two days of release for the opening weekend record holder “Avengers: Endgame” in April 2019 and the day after Christmas in 2015, where “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” was on its way to becoming the highest grossing film in domestic box office history.
“Moana 2” is leading the way with $55 million, bringing its total to an incredible $140 million after three days in theaters. Industry estimates have it now on course for a 5-day opening of $220 million, shattering the previous 5-day Thanksgiving record of $125 million set by...

Lucasfilm has made a deal with Simon Kinberg, who has worked with them before. Denis Villeneuve may be one of the most respected directors working today, particularly when it comes to his work in the sci-fi space, but don't expect him to take a trip to a galaxy far, far away any time soon. The filmmaker behind "Dune" and "Arrival" has made it pretty clear that he has little or no interest in directing a "Star Wars" movie. Nor is he interested in boldly going to the "Star Trek" universe either, for Trekkies who were perhaps holding out hope.
Villeneuve is currently busy developing "Dune Messiah," which will be his third and final entry in that franchise. Given that Frank Herbert's "Dune" was an inspiration for George Lucas' "Star Wars," it should come as no surprise that Villeneuve is a fan of the franchise, but only up to a point. Actor Harrison Ford has been a beloved part of the space opera franchise Star Wars. George Lucas transported viewers to the galaxy far, far away with the 1977 original film and fans have continued to be enthralled by it. However, the long-running series has followed some bizarre unwritten rules to create a unique sci-fi aesthetic of the universe.

It has been nearly five years since a "Star Wars" movie graced the silver screen. That movie was "Star Wars: Episode IX -- The Rise of Skywalker" and it brought the sequel trilogy to a close on an uneven note. What just about everyone seems to agree on is that the second and third entries in that trilogy were divisive, leaving Lucasfilm on uncertain ground when it comes to the future of the franchise. The future is, slowly but surely, starting to come into focus, with several "Star Wars" feature projects currently in development. And while much remains mysterious, it does seem that Disney and Lucasfilm have learned at least one lesson from the recent past.
Previously, Disney had not one but two new "Star Wars" movies dated for 2026, which seemed like a mistake. We'll get into the why in a moment.

They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but for "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" director Nicholas Meyer, having another movie pay direct homage to his work was more irritating than flattering. In an interview with Midnight's Edge in 2018, Meyer revealed that he had some pretty complicated feelings about the 2013 J.J. Abrams film "Star Trek Into Darkness," which took more than a little inspiration from "The Wrath of Khan." Despite a marketing campaign that tried to hide the fact that Benedict Cumberbatch was playing a version of Khan Noonien Singh, the genetically-enhanced tyrant previously portrayed by Ricardo Montalbán, audiences soon realized that "Into Darkness" is almost an explicit riff on "The Wrath of Khan" right down to its tragic ending, albeit with a bit of a twist.

Plucked from near-obscurity to more than hold her own as Rey in the Star Wars franchise, Ridley will be here to answer your questions
Daisy Jazz Isobel Ridley was working in a pub when she was cast as Rey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, having previously only appeared in a small number of short films and the 2015 horror-thriller Scrawl.
Around her subsequent Star Wars duties for the remains of the sequel trilogy – which she reprises for a yet untitled upcoming Star Wars film – Ridley swapped her lightsaber for assorted big-screen tales of homicide and rabbits (voicing Cottontail in the massively successful Peter Rabbit cartoon opposite James Cordon).

The Star Wars franchise is one of the biggest and most beloved film series of all time, capturing the hearts of fans across generations. But did you know it didn’t always pay as much as it does now? One of its iconic actors, who played Han Solo, earned just $10,000 for the first movie. Over time, though, his paycheck grew by leaps and bounds.

Why I Personally Hate 82-Year-Old Harrison Ford Playing Red Hulk in Captain America: Brave New World
I like Harrison Ford as much as the next guy. The legend has a charismatic presence on and off screen, with his nonchalance and energy still a surprise despite his face showing all the signs of a man who is ‘too old for this sh*t’. While I enjoyed his hilarious rendition of the Red Hulk transformation on the Comic-Con stage, he is not the perfect Thunderbolt Ross.
While the late William Hurt did a good job as the no-nonsense bureaucrat Thaddeus Ross in the MCU, the part in the franchise has not had frequent appearances as other supporting characters. Ford is one of the greatest actors no doubt, but his presence in almost every major franchise can sometimes get tiring.

Disney has pulled the second Star Wars movie dated for December 18, 2026, off the calendar. We hear it wasn’t certain that one pertained to the continuing adventures of Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker.
Going in that spot is Ice Age 6, which was announced at D23 Brazil a week ago.
As Deadline first reported, Simon Kinberg is now developing a trilogy of Star Wars movies that he’ll produce with Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy. The trilogy will comprise Episodes 10-12 of The Skywalker Saga that began with George Lucas’ original 1977 film. Kinberg’s project is brewing alongside percolating Star Wars projects by James Mangold, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Taika Waititi and Donald Glover.
There’s already a Star Wars movie in 2026 — that’s The Mandalorian & Grogu on May 22. It would have been to have two Star Wars movies opening in the same year, specifically within a six month-ish frame. Box office history...

As a "crazy old man" (in the words of Owen Lars) once put it, the truths that we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view. If you're the type of "Star Wars" fan who engages with each and every corner of the franchise, you've likely been a bit overwhelmed by the sheer abundance of new titles set in a galaxy far, far away since 2019. On the other hand, if the movies are the only part of "Star Wars" you engage with, you've probably been tapping your foot impatiently in the five years since Sheev Palpatine somehow returned and was once again defeated, bringing the Skywalker Saga to a close. It's a far cry from what Disney promised when it announced plans to unveil a new "Star Wars" film every year back in 2015.
The absence of "Star Wars" on the big screen certainly isn't for lack of trying.

A new Rey-focused Star Wars movie was announced at Star Wars Celebration 2023. Directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, the film follows Rey’s journey to rebuild the Jedi Order after ‘The Rise of Skywalker.’
Originally written by Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson, the script was later taken over by Steven Knight, and the recent news is that Knight has left the production.
The story is set 15 years after ‘Rise of Skywalker,’ exploring the post-war, post-First Order galaxy with the Jedi in disarray. Kathleen Kennedy mentioned that Rey is working to fulfill her promise to Luke and rebuild the Jedi Order, based on the ancient books.
So far, it’s been unknown whether that standalone movie will lead to a new trilogy, but some recent reports are certainly leaning in that direction. A new trilogy of Star Wars movies is in the making. Deadline reports that these films could be episodes 10-12 of the Skywalker Saga,...

Henry Cavill seems to be verse-jumping as he was recently seen in DC’s rival franchise, the MCU’s Deadpool & Wolverine. The actor had a small cameo as a Wolverine variant a.k.a The Cavillrine in Deadpool & Wolverine. This came after his exit as Superman from the Dceu after James Gunn took over and chose to go with a new actor instead.
Cavill has headlined The Witcher, starred in Mission Impossible: Fallout, and has played Sherlock Holmes, making him a franchise-favorite actor. While the James Bond role seems to be elusive to him, the actor had expressed interest in being a part of another legendary franchise, provided a new film met his expectations.

When news broke on Thursday that Simon Kinberg — best known for being a writer, producer, director or all of the above on much of the “X-Men” franchise — had been hired by Lucasfilm to write and produce a new “Star Wars” trilogy, it came as a surprise to many executives at Lucasfilm and Disney. The project is considered internally to be in deep development and not nearly ready to be made public.
There was also some surprise within the wider industry that Lucasfilm had turned to Kinberg as the newest steward of “Star Wars” on the big screen. According to multiple industry sources with experience working in the franchise space, Kinberg is seen on one level as a sensible and safe choice. Starting with 2005’s “XXX: State of the Union” and “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” his films as a screenwriter have grossed more than $3.3 billion worldwide. Beyond the “X-Men” films, he’s also produced “Cinderella,...

While fans are still dealing with the travesty that was The Acolyte and are looking forward to Skeleton Crew, it was reported that a new Star Wars trilogy was in development with Simon Kinberg writing and producing. Neither Disney nor Lucasfilm have given an official statement but it is rumored to be a new story with new characters.
Lucasfilm gas announced many film projects in the past, including a trilogy by Rian Johnson. However, most of these projects have been in limbo. On top of that, giving Kinberg the responsibility to handle a trilogy even before testing the waters may be a controversial decision. However, Kinberg does not come without experience.
