  • A cult is operating in the area, The Church of Apollo. Run by a powerful and charismatic man, Kalon, Susie is mesmerised by him, jealousy among the cult leads to murder.

I've always appreciated the talents of Michael Maloney, he's a very fine actor, it's good to see him playing a crank, very theatrically, he's normally so straight laced, he's great. I very much enjoyed his screen time with Father Brown.

Very different in tone from previous episodes, Father Brown faces a moral problem, how can he protect his flock from a powerfully charismatic charlatan? It's a wonderfully intriguing mystery, very clever, well paced, the art of story telling on this particular episode is top notch. 8/10

Two decades before the Jim Jones cult massacre in Guyana, we have The Eye of Apollo which is a cult run amok in Kembleford and sucks in housekeeper Susie Jasinski, who is from Poland. Anyway, the scenes of Susie's induction are quite intense and they draw the viewer in for sure.

Michael Maloney plays Kalon, the cult leader, and he has one of those recognizable faces that you can kind of point out and wonder, where have I seen him before?

Anyway, I hope that in future episodes the producers bring back Hugo Speer and don't bow to the mob and all that. I do that justice is done and Hugo Speer returns.

A fascinating episode once again, not my favourite but very interesting plot. You find out who the murderer is pretty sharpish in the episode but it takes till the very end to discover just how he did it, it baffled me watching it, but the explaination was so simple after it had been explained. A real Sixth Sense moment it was, except there weren't any ghosts!
  • I am a Christian so when I watch cult/occult movies I write on the information I believe and see what the film is professing.

This story was interesting to me in the way people get involved in cults. A man dressed like a high priest name Kalon has a cult group that meets in a large home owned by his very rich wife. Father Brown is among them for what reason I don't know. The cult name is Eye of Apollo. His wife sees he has a an attraction for women and has many affairs.

    1. Kalon picks on a pretty girl named Susie that works for Father Brown and tells her to come forward like he sees something really spiritual in her. He uses his position to make HER feel important.

    2. Susie is asked what her family calls her and she say Susanna. Kalon calls her Susanna and tells her to TRUST him. He wants her to open her eyes to the astral spirits.

    3. Kalon has Susanna sit, he uses the power of suggestion and starts programing her.

A-"Sense the sun on your skin."

B-"Close your eyes" as he puts his fingers on both sides of her head

    C-"Take a deep breath."

D-"Let it go" Feel the suns energy filling you up"

E-"There is a lonely place inside you Susanna and it has been there a long time".

F-Kalon guesses her father was in the war. He tells her the astral spirits of her mother and father are here now. He talks in general about her family and tells her how much they miss her.

G-Kalon is programming her, "can you feel them, their love, their joy" etc he wants her to feel what says to her to feel.

Susie comes out of this trance like state amazed and believing that this guy has supernatural powers.

In the process of the story the wife dies. Father Brown address Kalon about this and tell Kalon his religion is fake and angers him. When Father Brown tells Kalon leader of the cult "there are no astral spirits" he replies to Brown about believing in the "virgin birth". Brown replies like the guy is right and says "sorry" like he cannot prove it. Brown lacks faith to stand for what he believes but cannot explain and apologies for it.

Brown goes on to tell Kalon how he got involved in the cult. He used information he got that Kalon was injured years ago. To me Brown just uses excuses as to why people do things and then wants them to confess. People have a free will they are not forced to believe in God or things they want to believe or do things they do not want to do unless they allow someone to tamper with the free will.

Father Brown solves crimes, gets the people to confess like a amateur cop which is fine but, he plays the character as a priest and I don't see very much spiritual stuff coming from him. He does not teach or preach in the videos and talks very little using Jesus name, Salvation and or the Bible accept for constantly making the sign of the Cross on his chest.

The series is not bad. It is funny and interesting, it should have been named Mr Marple not Father Brown.
  • Episode is mostly OK, but it has few problems.

    • The mystery was quite obvious. For viewers, there is practically one suspect, and that is also the murderer.

    • Brown's method to make murderer confess didn't make any sense. It was supposed to make murderer realize how they were wrong and misguided, but from their point of view, the proof presented didn't offer anything new or otherwise be enlightening. It felt a bit like deus ex machina solution, which was quite unsatisfying.

Writing of characters was fairly good, and episode is mostly good, except for the third act, where it seems that writers either run out of time, and took the easiest route, or something similar happened.
  • The Church of Apollo comes to the village, led by Kalon, who claims that the path of happiness lies in the power of the sun. Polish domestic Susie is impressed when he says he can commune with her dead parents and wants to join his cult but Father Brown sees him as a charlatan. On the day the priest goes to dissuade Susie from leaving with the sect Kalon's wife Dominique is killed and cynical young group member Adam Watkins is arrested. Father Brown believes Kalon killed Dominique as he is really a lecherous philanderer who wanted to supplant her with Susie. However, as Kalon was with him when Dominique was killed, he has his work cut out for him in trying to prove Kalon's guilt.

Fairly boring episode with some over the acting by the guy playing Kalon, however the denouement is quite good. There's a locked door mystery element that is very good.
