Many fans were disappointed by how this film continued several of the plot threads started in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), and how it answered some of its lingering questions. Writer/director Rian Johnson stated in interviews that he had read J.J. Abrams' script for The Force Awakens, but Abrams never shared any long-term plans he had for the next two films. In fact, there was never an overarching story outline for the trilogy that he had to adhere to; both Abrams and Lucasfilm gave Johnson almost full creative freedom to develop the story as he saw fit, and they were reportedly enthusiastic about some of his more controversial choices.

Lieutenant Connix: Forget the munitions, there's no time. Just get everyone on the transports.
Lieutenant Connix: Oh, no.
For some reason, the 'blow smoke from the tip of a gun's barrel' western cliche move exists in the Star Wars universe. Even though the smoke from the barrel of blasters to blow does not (as gunpowder is unknown in this galaxy, so no gun provides any smoke).
