Dianne Crittenden, the casting director whose impressive résumé included the first Star Wars film, The In-Laws and the Terrence Malick features Badlands, Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line, has died. She was 82.
Crittenden died Wednesday at her home in Pacific Palisades after a battle with several cancers, fellow casting director Ilene Starger told The Hollywood Reporter.

Steven Soderbergh's "Ocean's" trilogy is some of the most fun you can have with a movie. They are hyper-enjoyable heist romps about a group of guys being dudes. As our own Chris Evangelista put it, "Ocean's 11" is "a hang-out movie, where all the people hanging out are also plotting a massive heist." Even the sequels have some excellent gags, like Julia Roberts' character impersonating the real Julia Roberts in "Ocean's 12," or "Ocean's 13" having the whole "the nose plays" bit and the hilarious and poignant subplot about factory workers in Mexico going on strike — a bit that just get more timely with age.
It's been over 15 years since the last with Clooney and Soderbergh, and we haven't heard about a reunion — until now. Speaking with Uproxx, George Clooney has an exciting update about a potential follow-up to "Ocean's 13."

George Clooney will be back with another “Ocean’s” heist film, the actor confirmed.
Clooney told Uproxx while promoting “The Boys in the Boat,” which he directed, that there is a script in the works for a fourth “Ocean’s” film set after the events of 2007 movie “Ocean’s 13.” The film concluded Steven Soderbergh’s crime comedy trilogy at the time, and later led to 2018 spin-off “Ocean’s 8” starring Sandra Bullock as the sister of Clooney’s (presumed dead) character.
“We have a really good script for another ‘Ocean’s’ now, so we may end up doing another one,” Clooney said. “It’s actually a great script.”
Clooney added that the film won’t be called “Ocean’s 14,” saying, “Well … I don’t want to call it that … I mean, the idea is kind of like ‘Going in Style.'”
The reference is to 1979 heist comedy “Going In Style,” directed by Martin Brest.

George Clooney says the Ocean’s gang could get back together after reading a “great script” for another film in the starry heist series. Speaking with Uproxx about his upcoming movie The Boys in the Boat, Clooney revealed a new Ocean’s film could find the crew from the trilogy reuniting for events set after Ocean’s 13. George Clooney may be returning to the “Ocean’s” franchise. In a new interview with Uproxx while promoting his movie “The Boys in the Boat,” the actor revealed that a script for another “Ocean’s” movie exists that would seemingly reunite the original trilogy’s cast for a movie set after the events of 2007’s “Ocean’s 13.” Clooney did not provide any concrete details.

One of cinema's most illustrious character actors has left us. Mark Margolis, best known for his performance as Hector Salamanca in both "Breaking Bad" and "Better Call Saul," sadly passed away in New York City earlier today at the age of 83. According to The Hollywood Reporter, his death came after a "short illness" and was officially announced by the performer's son, Morgan Margolis.
Margolis may be most recognizable to younger audiences for his acclaimed television role as the head of the Salamanca crime family, for which he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in 2012, but his tireless work in the industry stretches back to the 1970s. Appearing in films such as 1979's "Going in Style" and Brian De Palma's "Dressed to Kill" in 1980, Margolis would go on to find great success with supporting roles in "Scarface" as bodyguard and hitman Alberto the Shadow, "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" in 1994 alongside Jim Carrey,...

Martin Brest's "Scent of a Woman" was one of the most critically acclaimed films of 1992. Powered by an emotionally raucous screenplay from the late, great Bo Goldman, it's probably best remembered 31 years later for the hoo-hahing performance showcase that earned Al Pacino the Best Actor Oscar he should've won for, take your pick, "The Godfather Part II," "Serpico" or "Dog Day Afternoon." This is unfair. The film does run a tad long, and concludes with a conventional stand-up-and-cheer monologue from Pacino, but the length is excusable because Brest gives his best moments, most of which arrive during the film's second act, an abundance of oxygen. He lets his actors explore, which was catnip for Pacino and a blessing for his 22-year-old co-star Chris O'Donnell.

Ascending the driveway of a sprawling home in the Hollywood Hills for a face-to-face interview with Martin Brest, the legendary — and legendarily reclusive — director of “Beverly Hills Cop” and “Midnight Run,” it was tough not to immediately think of Xanadu, the protective enclave Charles Foster Kane retired to at the end of “Citizen Kane.” It seems like a fitting place for a former prince of the movie business to spend exile. Upon arrival, I quickly discover that the impeccably manicured property doesn’t, in fact, belong to Brest but to an artist friend, as does the lumbering, pitch-black Saint Bernard watching benevolently over our poolside conversation about the filmmaker’s career. By all accounts (most of all his own), that career came to a fiery end because of “Gigli,” but Brest soon explains how he made peace with the cataclysmic flop — even if he still can’t bear to mention it by name.

San Marcos, Calif – There was an Alan Arkin for every generation. Post World War Two adults may have seen him at Chicago’s “The Second City.” Baby Boomers remember his films “Wait Until Dark” and “The Russians Are Coming, The Russians are Coming” and Gen X saw him in “The In-Laws”, “Glengarry Glen Ross” and his Oscar winning turn in “Little Miss Sunshine.” He even did a Netflix series, “The Kominsky Method.” For every generation, for every form of acting, there was Alan Arkin. He passed away on June 29th, 2023, at the age of 89.

The original Max series “Full Circle” debuts on July 13. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, the new drama investigates a kidnapping gone wrong in New York, revealing the secrets and lies of multiple characters. Or as the trailer warns: “Everything is connected.” The six-episode limited series stars Zazie Beetz, Claire Danes, Jim Gaffigan, Jharrel Jerome, Timothy Olyphant, and Dennis Quaid.

The four-part documentary “Last Call: When A Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York” is set in the early 1990s as the AIDS crisis worsens. The media’s distorted coverage of the gay victims, coupled with the homophobic biases of the criminal justice system, undermine the investigation. The docuseries — which premieres on Max on July 9 — illustrates how the LGBTQ+ community fought to solve the murders and demand attention for those murdered.

It’s been nearly 20 years since Zach Braff worked with Natalie Portman on “Garden State,” but with his new film “A Good Person,” he was definitely reminded of her performance in his feature directorial debut. According to the writer and director, Florence Pugh has a similar “uncanny ability” as Portman.
“A Good Person,” out in theaters now, tells the story of Allison (Pugh), who survives a massive car accident that kills her sister- and brother-in-law to be. Unable to deal with the trauma and grief of it, she leaves her fiancé and eventually ends up addicted to opioids, struggling to pull herself together. Finally, she realizes she does need help and gets herself into an AA meeting — only to run straight into Daniel, her former almost-father-in-law (Morgan Freeman).
From there, the two develop an odd friendship, helping each other find their way through, while still silently resenting the other at times.

Even with only four movies under his belt, Zach Braff has directed more than his fair share of screen legends. His zeitgeist-y indie breakout success, 2004's "Garden State," saw him work with the late Ian Holm, who played Braff's father in the film. Braff's sophomore feature, "Wish I Was Here," then saw Inigo Montoya himself, "Yentl" and "The Princess Bride" actor Mandy Patinkin, step in to portray the "Scrubs" alum's onscreen patriarch.
Braff would remain off-screen for his third outing as a director with "Going in Style," a heist comedy remake that saw him direct no less than Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Alan Arkin, and Christopher Lloyd. That's not to overlook the many seasoned character actors Braff has also guided from behind the camera over his career, starting with Jean Smart, Ann Dowd, and Jackie Hoffman in "Garden State." More recently, Braff's reunion with "Scrubs" creator Bill Lawrence on "Shrinking...

Nearly 20 years ago, "Scrubs" star Zach Braff made quite the splash as a filmmaker with his feature directorial debut "Garden State." A perfect example of an indie darling, the film announced Braff to the world as an exciting new talent behind the camera. However, since then, he's only directed two more feature films. There was the crowdfunded "Wish I Was Here," which arrived 10 years after "Garden State" to middling reviews, and the studio heist comedy "Going in Style," which starred Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, and Alan Arkin, and it took Braff outside of his indie comfort zone. Of course, in that time Braff has also directed episodes of acclaimed TV shows like "Ted Lasso" and "Shrinking," and he's learned a lot over the years.
That brings us to "A Good Person," Braff's fourth feature film (watch the trailer here). As a writer and director, Braff heads back to New Jersey...

While Zach Braff might be best known for his comedic acting roles, his filmmaking ventures, specifically the three he’s written and directed, have primarily dealt with serious family dramas and that specific genre. Of course, everyone knows his 2007 breakout film, “Garden State,” or at least the memes, which tackles a quarter-life crisis and depression. Then came “Wish I Was Here” in 2014, covering fatherhood and cancer.

It’s been a hot minute, Mr. Braff, but we’re thankful that you have returned. Well, he hadn’t gone very far, of course, but A Good Person feels like a return of sorts, a re-emergence of a filmmaker who has struggled to get his films off the ground for a cavalcade of reasons. 2004’s Garden State, his debut feature which wowed audiences both at Sundance and then in cinemas, earning him a Grammy win for its sensational soundtrack. Then, not much.
Not for the want of trying, mind you, with countless directorial opportunities falling, followed by his eventual exploration and success with Kickstarter and the film born from it, 2014’s Wish I Was Here, which had a mixed reception, and taking on a studio comedy with Going In Style in 2017. For better or worse, 2022 has been the year of Florence Pugh.
“Don’t Worry Darling” reached a level of pop culture relevance that most arthouse films can only dream of, with film festival attendees and celebrity gossip addicts hanging on every detail of the rumored feud between Pugh and her director and co-star Olivia Wilde. But while the film’s reviews were mixed, nobody denied that Pugh gave a phenomenal performance in the lead role. Captivating industry observers while having the acting chops to justify the attention is the stuff that movie stars are made of.
Pugh won’t be leaving the limelight any time soon, as her upcoming film slate leaves her well positioned to capitalize on her current momentum. She’s currently working with directors ranging from Christopher Nolan to Denis Villeneuve, and will be seen everywhere from indie dramas to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Zach Braff's new movie "A Good Person" capitalizes on the proven formula for any good movie: find a topic and let Morgan Freeman narrate about it (at least in the trailer). This time, it's model trains, a topic that hasn't received full cinematic treatment beyond being a background prop.
"A Good Person" stars Freeman and budding superstar Florence Pugh. In the movie, Pugh plays a woman who's struggling with grief after a fatal car accident claims the life of her soon-to-be sister-in-law. Freeman plays Pugh's would-be father-in-law, who reaches out to her in the wake of their shared loss. Part of their shared healing process involves sharing his model trains with her and what they mean to him. Cue the waterworks and, in the best-case scenario, some Oscar nods.

Zach Braff's directorial debut, "Garden State," was an event unto itself in the indie movie scene circa 2004. With its award-winning soundtrack -- a mixtape of then-contemporary indie-rock titles and vintage classics like "The Only Living Boy in New York" -- and its quirky-dramatic tale of post-college graduation ennui, Braff's Sundance sensation was practically tailor-made for disaffected 20-somethings coming of adult age in the early '00s like himself. That it's also fairly hackneyed while being fully earnest in its convictions and observations about life kind of makes it the perfect embodiment of what the world looks like through the eyes of a 20-something.
Up until 2023, however, Braff had only directed two other films, one of which he also wrote (2014's "Wish I Was Here") and the other which he directed only (2017's "Going in Style"). "There has to be a catalyst that really puts me in the chair," he...

Sunday Am: Universal’s M. Night Shyamalan movie Knock at the Cabin held up over Paramount’s 80 for Brady, 14.2M to 12.5M, even though the latter had discount matinee ticketing in most theaters coast-to-coast.
While the experimental ticket price drop didn’t exactly mushroom more bucks than Knock at the Cabin, 80 for Brady pulled in more people than Knock at the Cabin, 1.3 million to 1.1 million according to box office stat corp EntTelligence, which actually counts seats for the industry. The average ticket price for 80 for Brady was 9.79 to Knock on the Cabin‘s 12.30. So, in regards to Paramount and exhibition’s great team-up, something definitely worked here that bears repeating with subsequent films for older demos.

February is looking to be at least slightly better than January, in terms of new movies, if only because we’re getting a number of sequels to previous hits. This weekend we get two non-sequels, one from a popular genre filmmaker, the other an odd true-story comedy based around the biggest sports event of the year. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
The biggest new release of the weekend is M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller “Knock at the Cabin,” based on Paul Tremblay’s book “The Cabin at the End of the World,” and starring Dave Bautista, Rupert Grint, Jonathan Groff and Ben Aldridge, who recently co-starred in “Spoiler Alert.” The premise revolves around a small family of three vacationing in a cabin when a group of armed strangers show up with a proposition that could prevent Armageddon.

MGM has released the official trailer for Zach Braff’s latest directorial effort, “A Good Person,” which stars “Midsommar” actor Florence Pugh opposite Celeste O’Connor, Zoe Lister-Jones, Molly Shannon and Morgan Freeman. The upcoming drama sees Pugh transform into Allison, a traumatized car crash survivor recovering from opioid addiction. Years after the accident, Allison begins to confront her past through an unlikely friendship with the father of her late fiancé.
Braff and Pugh previously worked together on Braff’s 2019 short film “In the Time It Takes to Get There,” where Pugh plays the 18th century equivalent of a social media influencer. Following their collaboration, the two began a relationship.
“The movie that we made together genuinely was probably one of my most favourite experiences,” Pugh said in the interview. “It felt like a very natural and easy thing to do.”
Braff is best known for playing the recurring role of J.

It’s been 18 years since writer/director/actor Zach Braff’s directorial debut, “Garden State,” the twee emo-ish Sundance film that taught mainstream audiences to love indie rock or whatever. Braff’s directed lots of things since—2014’s “I Wish I Was Here,” lots of “Scrubs” episodes, 2017’s “Going In Style“—but it’s safe to say none of them captured the zeitgeist in the way “Garden State” did and maybe that’s just a one-time lightning in a bottle event.

"Scrubs" and "Garden State" star, Zach Braff, is jumping back into the director's chair after several awards nominations. Today we have the first trailer for his latest film, "A Good Person," starring Florence Pugh and Morgan Freeman. Production began on the project in October 2021, and it will be released in the spring of next year.
In the film, Pugh's character Allison is involved in a fatal accident, according to a report from Deadline. In the wake of the tragedy, Allison develops an "unlikely relationship with her would-be father-in-law," who is played by Freeman, which helps her find a way forward to "live a life worth living."
In addition to Pugh and Freeman, "A Good Person" will star Celeste O'Connor ("The In-Between"), Zoe Lister-Jones ("Life in Pieces"), and Molly Shannon ("Saturday Night Live"). Braff also serves as a writer for the film, which he told Vanity Fair that he wrote during the pandemic.

Florence Pugh proves that you can never really go home again.
The Oscar nominee stars in Zach Braff’s latest drama “A Good Person” as Allison, a woman who survives a fatal accident and forms an unlikely relationship with her would-be father-in-law played by Morgan Freeman. Braff writes, directs, and produces the New Jersey-set feature. Pugh also makes her producing debut with the film, which serves as a reunion for Freeman and director Braff after 2017’s “Going in Style.”
Molly Shannon, Celeste O’Connor, Zoe Lister-Jones, and Chinaza Uche round out the cast.
The official synopsis reads: Daniel (Freeman) is brought together with Allison (Pugh), the once thriving young woman with a bright future who was involved in an unimaginable tragedy that took his daughter’s life. As grief-stricken Daniel navigates raising his teenage granddaughter and Allison seeks redemption, they discover that friendship, forgiveness, and hope can flourish in unlikely places.

Long before "Beverly Hills Cop" became the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time (a record the film held for almost 20 years until "The Matrix Reloaded" claimed the crown), it was a problem project for Paramount. Birthed in 1975 by a young studio exec named Michael Eisner, the film was to be a fish-out-of-water actioner about a streetwise Detroit cop who busts up the ritzy Los Angeles neighborhood while trying to track down the murderer of his best friend. The film went through multiple drafts over many years before Daniel Petrie Jr. basically cracked the story in 1983.
Though the project was at last moving forward, something still wasn't right. Producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, red hot off the success of "Flashdance," were now shepherding the movie, and, despite their high studio profile, couldn't get a firm commitment from a leading man. There’s a scene in Bullet Train that perfectly illustrates what a misfire this supposed action comedy is. A bunch of rival assassins with overlapping and clashing objectives are all on the same overnight high-speed train from Tokyo to Kyoto. Two of them — Brad Pitt’s “Ladybug” and Brian Tyree Henry’s “Lemon” — find themselves in a face-to-face encounter in the quiet car. Naturally, the confrontation turns violent. In a movie that actual took action comedy seriously, this might have been hilarious: How do you beat someone up, maybe even kill them, without making any noise? But here, after the barest nod to the need for silence, rowdy fisticuffs commence, and the only concession to comedy — allegedly — is Pitt snapping at the civilian who shushes them to “eat a bag of dicks”… and then apologizing, because, you see, he’s on a journey to be a better person.

This remarkable black comedy is often listed as a horror film yet it has more nervous laughs than shivers. It’s a solid idea: cruelly marginalized old folks get madder than hell and just won’t take it any more. Or maybe they simply go nuts. The cast of ‘over seventies’ playing over eighty is just marvelous, and one murderous little pixie is a delight: Paula Trueman. Things do become absurd but the universally-understood premise stays firm. . . we’ll all be there sooner or later. “A Murder A Day Keeps the Landlord Away.”

Uche will play Nathan, who has contended with much childhood abuse in the past and faces a tragic loss in the present, trying to move on to create a new life for himself in Manhattan.
Braff and Pugh are producing the film with Killer Films and Elevation Films. MGM acquired it for distribution in North American and international markets including Latin America, Scandinavia, Russia, Eastern Europe, China, Japan,...

With no official word on “Dune” viewership on HBO Max, the world of home movie viewing still belongs to “Free Guy” (Disney/$5.99). Shawn Levy’s non-franchise (so far) action comedy starring Ryan Reynolds is the first film to take the #1 spot for four weeks on all VOD charts we follow. At Apple TV/iTunes and GooglePlay, which chart transactions daily, it’s held the top spot each day without fail.
Disney reduced the price to $5.99 last weekend and it bested “Old” (Universal/$5.99), which also dropped its price from $19.99. M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller placed #2 on two charts, #4 at Vudu (which charts by revenue; it was second to “Free Guy” there among non-pvod titles).
Two of the year’s most acclaimed international releases — Julia Ducournau’s Cannes winner “Titane” (Neon/$6.99) and Mia Hansen-Love’s “Bergman Island” (IFC/$6.99) — debuted this week but didn’t come close to the top 10 on any chart.

“Free Guy” (Disney/$5.99) continues to do theaters a huge service. Despite its 45-day exclusive theatrical window, the year’s top grossing domestic non-franchise film keeps adding to its at home revenues. Or maybe that window is part of its charm? With three weeks at #1 on the VOD charts, word of mouth drove its success and it’s close to a five-time multiple theatrcial gross from its opening weekend. In the year-plus we’ve been checking these out, no other title has accomplished this.
With this week’s drop to standard pricing, the volume of new business for the Ryan Reynolds comedy must be considerable: The Vudu chart calculates by total revenue and favors premium VOD titles, but the now-cheaper $5.99 “Free Guy” topped five titles that cost $19.99.
Among debuts, “Copshop” (Open Road/$19.99) with Gerard Butler bested “Dear Evan Hansen” (Universal/$19.99) for initial response. Action-thriller “Copshop” placed on two charts, while “Hansen...

Ted Melfi is adapting the novel “The Underworld” for Netflix, the filmmaker told TheWrap during an interview at the Toronto International Film Festival. He will also direct the feature.
The novel was published in 1997 by Don DeLillo and follows Nick Shay, a waste management executive who grew up in the Bronx, and features numerous subplots in American history from the second half of the 20th century.
It was nominated for the National Book Award and shortlisted for the Pulitzer Prize.
An individual with knowledge, however, said the deal for Melfi to adapt and direct is not done yet.
Melfi most recently directed “The Starling” with Melissa McCarthy and he wrote “Going in Style” in 2017, as well as “Hidden Figures” in 2016, which he also directed. “The Starling” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday.
Melfi is represented by UTA. A spokesperson for UTA did not respond to requests for comment.

Zach Braff is quite simply doing it all these days. The popular Scrubs actor pivoted to the director’s chair a few years back with the family comedy Going in Style and even helmed an episode of the hit show Ted Lasso (for which he recently received an Emmy nomination). It’s been four years since Zach Braff directed a movie, and that was the geriatric studio comedy Going in Style starring Alan Arkin, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman. It was an average comedy to crack up the older crowds, and it appears it was enough to keep one of the stars interested in working with […]
