For 40 years, the Sundance Film Festival has been the United States' preeminent market and showcase for independent film. Over this span, the festival has become famous not just for the groundbreaking movies it's premiered, but its wintry Park City, Utah setting. January is peak ski season in the once-sleepy resort town, which gives Hollywood execs, producers and artists extra incentive to skip town and squeeze in some time on the slopes while watching loads of new movies from some of the most talented and excitingly unconventional filmmakers on the planet.
This annual tradition could be coming to an end.
Today, the Sundance Institute announced that it is soliciting bids to relocate the 10-day festival. According to festival director Eugene Hernandez:
"We are in a unique moment for our festival and our global film community, and with the contract up for renewal, this exploration allows us to responsibly consider how...

Overwatch 2’s Season 9 update has brought with it some critical upgrades, but not everything is going smoothly for the hero shooter. It appears the update has also changed the size of the projectiles leading many players and streamers to make public callouts about the bad implementation of the update.
Season 9 began on February 13, 2024, and Blizzard had promised some beefy updates to the characters and game overall. Unfortunately, the studio may have taken things a smidge too far and now players are getting kills without even aiming at their target!

As film years go, 2023 was surprisingly strong. Even during a time that saw the industry still struggling to recover from the after effects of the pandemic and wracked by lengthy actors and writers strikes, Hollywood produced some memorable work.

Pedro Pascal almost joined the HBO family years prior to “The Last of Us.”
Before Pascal’s TV rise with “Narcos,” “Game of Thrones,” “The Mandalorian,” and most recently, “The Last of Us,” Pascal was approached to join the ensemble cast of the 2014 show “Looking” that focused on a friend group of gay men in San Francisco.
Casting director Carmen Cuba told GQ in a 10-year anniversary piece that Pascal was considered for a role; Cuba later cast him in “Narcos” after meeting.
“Especially in TV, you meet a lot of people,” Cuba said. “Pedro Pascal was someone we met [for a role on ‘Looking’] and from that, I put him on ‘Narcos.’ The thing with Pedro, it was like he was testing on a million things. So many of these things, as you know in casting, it’s just like scheduling. Does scheduling work? Does the group? Because in this, we were really casting a group.

“Weekend” and “Looking” filmmaker Andrew Haigh is back with another soulful examination of love, family and queerness, “All of Us Strangers.” Emmy-nominated “Fleabag” star Andrew Scott and Oscar-nominated “Normal People” and “Aftersun” breakout Paul Mescal star as two men in London, who bond after a chance encounter. Meanwhile, Scott’s Adam encounters his parents in his childhood home — exactly the same as they were the day they died thirty years ago. From there, a surprising and heartbreaking ghost story ensues.
“All of Us Strangers” is a beautiful, haunting film tangled up in the root of identity, where Haigh prods at the intersection of family, culture, sex and love; and the intimacy and aloneness within each. It’s a super personal piece for the filmmaker, it’s poised to be a player in the 2024 awards conversation and it’s finally heading to theaters.

It’s safe to say a lot of people had a lot of problems with the switch from HBO Max to Max, but there was at least one upside to the streaming shakeup. Now, it’s easier than ever to find the excellent queer stories floating around Warner Bros. Discovery’s platform.
During its lifespan, HBO Max never had an LGBTQ tag to filter its offerings and help subscribers find stories about the queer community more easily: a surprising move for a streamer named after the channel that brought us boundary-breaking works like “Six Feet Under” and the miniseries adaptation of “Angels in America.” That’s been remedied on Max, which features an “LGBTQ+ Voices” collection. You do have to scroll quite far down the homepage to find it in the collections carousel, but when you do, it makes searching for the queer films and shows on the streamer considerably easier.

Paul Mescal (‘All of Us Strangers’) on ‘trying to get at something that feels authentic, true, sexy’
“He gives off a kind of air of mystery or forwardness that is potentially unsettling a bit for Adam, but as the film unravels and as you get to know Harry a bit more, there’s something kind of surprising in his kindness and tenderness,” explains actor Paul Mescal about the “duality” that drew him to the role of Harry in “All of Us Strangers.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Loosely adapted from the novel “Strangers” by Taichi Yamada, “All of Us Strangers” stars Andrew Scott as Adam, a screenwriter who nervously begins a relationship with his neighbor Harry while still reckoning with the loss of his parents (Jamie Bell and Claire Foy), who seem to have returned 30 years after they died in a car accident when Adam was a child. “There’s kind of two concurrent love stories happening at the same time,” Mescal observes, “one of familial...

How challenging is it in this day and age to stand out in a crowded, chaotic marketplace of content and distraction, and is the worst fate for a series to be met with indifference? Despite all the progress we’ve seen over the years, what more can the industry do for black, indigenous, LGBTQ and other minority communities when it comes to diversity and inclusion on our TV screens? These were some of the topics discussed by five top TV showrunners and directors when they joined Gold Derby’s special “Meet the Experts” Q&a event with 2023 /2024 awards contenders: Nkechi Okoro Carroll (“Found”), Peter Hoar (“The Last of Us”), Mimi Leder (“The Morning Show”), John Hoffman (“Only Murders in the Building”) and Sterlin Harjo (“Reservation Dogs”).

Tuesday’s episode of “Only Murders in the Building” Season 3 will have its own “Father of the Bride” moment, with Selena Gomez, Martin Short and Steve Martin donned in wedding attire in a new sneak peek released Monday.
The trio can be seen running toward a courtroom before being stopped by a security guard who asks if they have an appointment.
“It’s my wedding ma’am,” Mabel responds.
“And you guys are what her two dads?” the guard asks.
“That’s right, we’re the father of the bride,” Charles replies, to which Oliver adds “Oh that’s fun.”
“So you got a groom in there?” the guard questions, to which Mabel says “why does there always have to be a groom?”
The guard proceeds to wish the trio “many happy returns” before they rush past her.
The clip comes after Gomez and Martin teased their looks via social media in March.

Two of Ireland's national treasures, Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott, are gearing up for their upcoming film "All of Us Strangers." The indie film, directed by queer British filmmaker Andrew Haigh, will see the pair of esteemed actors getting close after a chance encounter changes everything. If Haigh's previous projects, including "Weekend" and "Lean on Pete," are anything to go by, it's likely to be another LGBTQ+ film that needs to be on your watch list.
Oscar nominee Mescal and Emmy nominee Scott are the dynamic duo in the lead roles, and they're joined by Claire Foy ("The Crown") and Jamie Bell ("Rocketman"). Foy and Bell play Scott's parents, who died when he was just 12. As he tries to write about them - and falls in love with Mescal's character - his parents visit him as ghostly presences. A movie about Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal falling in love pretty much sells itself. Throw in writer/director Andrew Haigh and a magical realist story about Scott reuniting with the ghosts (?) of his dead parents, and I can already feel my heart swelling with emotion after watching the "All of Us Strangers" trailer. It's Thursday morning, dammit, I'm not ready for actual feelings at this time of day!
Loosely based on Taichi Yamada's 1987 novel "Strangers," the film centers on Adam (Scott), a middle-aged man who's trying to write about his late parents when he suddenly finds himself falling in love with his enigmatic younger neighbor Harry (Mescal). But as unexpected as their romance is, it's got nothing on what happens to Adam when he journeys back to his hometown, only to find his parents (Claire Foy and Jamie Bell) living there, just the way he remembers them when...

Paul Mescal is giving Andrew Scott the chance of a lifetime: to speak with his deceased parents.
Mescal and Scott co-lead “All of Us Strangers,” written and directed by Andrew Haigh (“Weekend”).
One night in his near-empty tower block in contemporary London, screenwriter Adam (Scott) has a chance encounter with his mysterious neighbor Harry (Mescal) that punctures the rhythm of his everyday life. As Adam and Harry get closer, Adam is pulled back to his childhood home where it appears his long-dead parents (Claire Foy and Jamie Bell) are both living and look the same age as the day they died 30 years before.
“All of Us Strangers” is produced by Graham Broadbent, Pete Czernin, and Sarah Harvey and was previously known as “Strangers,” with the film being loosely based on Taichi Yamada’s 1987 novel of the same name.
The feature screened at Telluride and will make its New York premiere at NYFF.

All of Us Strangers, a tearjerking supernatural drama written and directed by Andrew Haigh (Weekend, 45 Years and HBO’s Looking), had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival on Thursday and then screened again on Saturday at the Werner Herzog Cinema. Adapted from Taichi Yamada’s 1987 novel but altered by Haigh into a story more personal to him, the film — which Searchlight will release on Dec. 22 — wowed critics but may prove a slightly tougher sell to Academy members. They do occasionally embrace supernatural stories (see: The Shape of Water and Everything Everywhere All at Once), but seem to prefer examples of the genre that leave fewer questions unanswered.
Strangers’ strongest shots at awards season recognition are probably Haigh’s screenplay and the performance of the film’s leading man, Andrew Scott (aka “the hot priest” from season two of Amazon’s Fleabag), which is quiet and soulful but makes a major impression.

Andrew Scott sees dead people, but he could also see an Oscar nomination come his way with his heartbreaking and tenderly emotional turn as a gay screenwriter in Andrew Haigh’s drama “All of Us Strangers.”
Loosely based on Taichi Yamada’s 1987 novel “Strangers,” the film follows screenwriter Adam (Scott), who, after an encounter with his neighbor Harry (Paul Mescal), is mysteriously pulled back into his childhood home, where it appears his long-dead parents (played by Claire Foy and Jamie Bell) are actually alive — and haven’t aged in 30 years.
Emmy nominee Scott (guest drama actor in 2020 for “Black Mirror”) has been seamlessly maneuvering back and forth between film and television, notably garnering massive attention for his “hot priest” role on “Fleabag.” He absorbs the underlying pain of losing parents, while also grappling with the lingering question of whether they would approve of you or not. It may sound like...

The best scene of “Call Me by Your Name” has nothing to do with fruit, but a frank father-son conversation. Brittle to the point of breaking, Timothée Chalamet sits on the couch, arms crossed, resenting his dad for acknowledging the source of his anguish. “You’re too smart not to know how rare, how special, what you two had was,” Michael Stuhlbarg tells the boy. “I may have come close, but I never had what you two have. … How you live your life is your business.”
Gay men rarely receive that kind of acceptance from anyone, much less their parents, and hearing those words uttered in “Call Me by Your Name” went a long way to heal that wound for many who didn’t get that satisfaction from their own folks. Half a dozen years later, Andrew Haigh’s “All of Us Strangers” feels like a feature-length expansion of that...

Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal have undeniable chemistry in “All of Us Strangers,” according to writer-director Andrew Haigh.
The film, which follows a screenwriter (Scott) who falls for his mysterious neighbor (Mescal) and revisits his childhood in a surreal way, features “fearless” sex scenes, as Haigh told Vanity Fair.

‘All of Us Strangers’ Starring Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal Set for Christmas Release by Searchlight
Here’s some good news: Instead of delaying a film to 2024 due to the ongoing strike, Searchlight Pictures has dated an anticipated new film for December of this year. “All of Us Strangers,” the new film from “Weekend” and “Looking” filmmaker Andrew Haigh, will open in limited release in theaters on Dec. 22, 2023.
The film stars Andrew Scott as Adam, a screenwriter who has a chance encounter with his mysterious neighbor Harry (Oscar nominee Paul Mescal) one night in his near-empty tower block in contemporary London. The encounter “punctures the rhythm of his everyday life” and Adam and Harry get closer. But when Adam is pulled back to his childhood home, it appears his long-dead parents (Claire Foy and Jamie Bell) are both living and look the same age as the day they died 30 years before.
Haigh wrote and directed the film, which is based on the 1987 novel “Strangers” by Taichi Yamada.

The search for the perfect Barbie and Ken actors in Greta Gerwig’s record-breaking blockbuster “Barbie” fell to casting directors Lucy Bevan and Allison Jones, who recently revealed to Vanity Fair that “Saturday Night Live” Emmy nominee Bowen Yang, “Schitt’s Creek” Emmy winner Dan Levy and “Dear Evan Hansen” Tony winner Ben Platt were all in the running to land roles as different variations of Ken.
“They were definitely really different, but they had to feel like a cohesive group,” Bevan said about the search for the perfect Ken ensemble. “You wanted to cast people who were really going to get on and be great and enjoy it.”
“Barbie” was shot in London under strict Covid protocols, which meant every cast member was required to spend three months in the city close to production. Flying back and forth to the U.S. was not an option. That created a logistical issue for Yang,...

Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has reportedly been voted out of the ultra-conservative Freedom Caucus, but apparently, she’s been dodging calls from the caucus chairman to set a meeting to officially get her pink slip. To the hosts of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” that felt like a move a certain “Seinfeld” character would try to pull.
The vote to dismiss Greene came at the end of June, reportedly after a very public fight with fellow congresswoman Lauren Boebert on the House floor. According to NBC News, a caucus board member says efforts have been made to get a meeting with Greene, but they suspect it’s “a little bit like someone refusing service from a legal standpoint … if I’m not served, then maybe it doesn’t take effect.”

Wes Anderson’s latest film, “Asteroid City,” opens wide this weekend. In typical Anderson fashion, the sci-fi comedy features a large ensemble of A-list actors. It’s based on a story and screenplay by Anderson. Longtime collaborator Alexandre Desplat composed the score, and the soundtrack features 17 country and western songs from the mid 1950s when the film is set.
If you’re a Wes Anderson fan, you’re not going to want to miss “Asteroid City.” Here’s where you can watch it:

“Asteroid City” had its world premiere at the 76th Cannes International film festival on May 23, 2023.
It kicked off a limited theatrical run in New York and Los Angeles on June 16th and released wide on June 23.
Is “Asteroid City” in theaters or streaming?

(Welcome to Did They Get It Right?, a series where we look at an Oscars category from yesteryear and examine whether the Academy's winner stands the test of time.)
We all have Oscar wins that we love, where the Academy decides to step out of line with convention and give it to someone doing truly exceptional work. Olivia Colman taking home Best Actress for "The Favourite" is a recent example I still cannot believe happened. We also have the awards we despise, where we cannot even fathom how the stars aligned to push something we consider to be truly terrible to the winners' circle, like "Crash" winning Best Picture.
Far more common are the awards given out where we understand how and why they won but vehemently disagree with the selection. Just from this past year, I'd put Brendan Fraser winning for "The Whale" and Jamie Lee Curtis winning for...

Incredibly, the super-talented Murray Bartlett is still on a roll. The Aussie native spent years working in television and film on both sides of the Pacific but outside of a prominent role in HBO’s “Looking,” Bartlett was a bit under the radar even in Hollywood. That all changed when Mike White cast him in the first season of “The White Lotus.” Today, not only does Bartlett have an Emmy Award on his mantle somewhere, but he’s in the running for more awards hardware with acclaimed performances in “The Last of Us” and “Welcome to Chippendales” over the past 12 months alone.
