The magical girl genre is one that’s near and dear to my heart. As a kid, anime like Sailor Moon immediately caught my attention with their all-girl team-ups, openness about wanting to rest after the fight and severe lack of “girls are useless” narratives. It’s no wonder so many creators take inspiration from a genre that champions love, friendship, self-care and badassery. Such is the case for Pearl Low. “Creating community through storytelling is at the heart of why I tell the types of stories that I do.” - Pearl Low, creator of Wheels & Roses Low has worked in animation for over eight years, having worked on projects such as Hair Love (Sony Pictures Animation), Craig of the Creek (Cartoon Network), #1 Happy Family USA (A24) and more. Low has since created Orange Blossom Studios , an independent studio that, according to Low, “strives to center diverse magical and cultural stories.

Don Murray, who rose to fame co-starring with Marilyn Monroe in 1956’s Bus Stop and enjoyed a prolific career that stretched into the 21st Century with Twin Peaks: The Return in 2017, has died. He was 94.
His death was announced by his son Christopher to The New York Times. No additional details were provided.
Murray was Oscar-nominated for his debut performance as Beauregard “Beau” Decker, the lovestruck cowboy who falls for Monroe’s saloon singer Cherie in Joshua Logan’s Bus Stop, an adaptation of the William Inge play.
A conscientious objector during the Korean War who fulfilled his service obligation by working in German and Italian refugee camps, Murray became known for building an acting career in what were once called “message” movies, films with socially responsible themes. In Fred Zinnemann’s A Hatful of Rain (1957), he played a morphine-addicted war veteran, and in 1962 starred as a closeted (and blackmailed...

Don Murray, the venturesome actor who earned an Oscar nomination for playing a rodeo cowboy smitten by Marilyn Monroe in Bus Stop, then spurned Hollywood’s attempts to mold him, has died. He was 94.
Murray’s son Christopher announced his dad’s death to The New York Times without providing details.
The actor was also known for the interesting parts he went after in such serious films as A Hatful of Rain (1957), The Hoodlum Priest (1961) and Advise & Consent (1962).
Fresh off a starring role in a 1955 Broadway revival of Thornton Wilder’s The Skin of Our Teeth, Murray was sought by director Joshua Logan to portray Bo Decker, the naive Montana man who falls for the chanteuse Chérie (Monroe), in Bus Stop (1956). It was his first movie, and he was 26 at the time.

With how exceptionally cinematic and well-acted the games are and how good they look on PlayStation 5, "The Last of Us" was always going to face scrutiny for whether it really needed to be adapted for television. Shortly after HBO announced the show in March 2020, series co-creator Neil Druckmman — who is also writer and director of both games and "Uncharted 4" — admitted:
"...with TV, you have to figure out how it communicates ideas or tells stories. In removing the interactivity of the story, how do you make it unique for this other medium? It's an interesting challenge, and I think there's a lot to learn from it."
In a December 2022 interview with The New Yorker, Druckmann and co-creator Craig Mazin sounded confident they'd cracked the code. The two spoke knowledgeably on past blunders like 2005's "Doom," which as a too obvious homage, features a first-person action sequence in its finale — a cardinal...

Riverdale reinvents itself as the fifth season properly gets underway.
This Riverdale review contains spoilers.
Riverdale Season 5 Episode 4
“To be honest, it doesn’t even feel like Riverdale anymore.”
You can say that again Archie.
Following three episodes originally intended for last year and a seven-year time jump, Riverdale‘s fifth season gets well and truly underway with an installment designed not so much with shaking up the status quo but reinventing it completely. To borrow the name of a Flaming Lips song — you just know NYC writer’s block-stricken Jughead listens to lots of the band’s output — suddenly everything has changed.
In the near decade since he was last home, Archie has been through hell fighting in an unnamed conflict in which he feels responsible for one of his fellow soldiers losing a leg. He has dreams that mix battle imagery with the formally idyllic existence he had in high school.

There are countless manipulative, saccharine-coated teen romancers that aimlessly bask in cliched conventions of youth-oriented stagnation and alienation. Thankfully, the new year of 2019 starts off on a decent note by offering a different kind of upbeat teen romance genre that has legitimate heart, wit, and gentle substantive pathos. In director Peter Hutchings's ("The Outcasts") quirky-minded yet solidly conceived dramedy Then Came You the sentiment is blatantly clear about living for the moment and valuing the little things that matter despite the size of the adversity. Then Came You does not necessarily break ground in its perception of youthful love and friendship but it manages to promote a genuine feeling of comfort and consciousness. Hutchings's nifty gem is a profound combination of amusement and sorrow set against a playful...

Eden Sher has her own pilot at ABC, a spinoff from the long-running comedy The Middle. But she’s found time for a possible temp job at Cloud 9 Superstore.
Sher will be a guest star on an upcoming episode of the NBC Superstore comedy, playing Penny, a potential employee for the Cloud 9 department retailer. In the episode, Jonah and Garrett have taken over the hiring duties for seasonal employees. In the course of those duties, they discover Penny, an enthusiastic, quirky and fun young woman who knows – yes, knows – she’s the perfect addition to the Cloud 9 family.
The guest shot is not too far afield from Sher’s character on the ABC series The Middle, where she plays Sue Heck, the awkward daughter of Patricia Heaton.
No air date has been set for the Superstore episode. Sher is set to star in her own pilot, The Middle Spinoff,...

E! News is reporting that The Flash has cast Ashley Rickards as Rosalind "Rosa" Dillion a.k.a. The Top and she'll make her debut as the extremely dangerous DC Comics villain in the fourth episode of the upcoming third season. Rickards' iteration will be a new take on The Top, a male character in the comics, but she'll retain the same metahuman abilities, which are to make people's heads spin. Her version will also likely share a fairly intimate relationship with Grey Damon's Mirror Master as she's being teased as the Bonnie to his Clyde. Rickards is best known for her lead role as Jenna Hamilton on MTV's comedy drama series Awkward and has also guest-starred on episodes of Zoey 101, Ugly Betty, One Tree Hill, Entourage, and American Horror Story: Murder House. Her film credits include Fly Away, Sassy Pants, A Haunted House 2, and Behaving Badly.
