For Madeline to be hired by a New York law firm, they would have had to have checked her law license status through one of three official mechanisms, each of which is carefully managed by the state. This would have verified identity, address, current license status, disciplinary actions, etc.
The entire idea for Madeline to be appearing in court with a fake identity simply wouldn't work. In addition to the background checks already mentioned, each time her name was on a Notice to Appear as the Attorney of Record, a cross check would automatically be made and, if Madeline tried to alter public records, she would essentially be committing a felony each time she took a case.
