Well, it was supposed to have been a surprise. Fifteenth Doctor Ncuti Gatwa let the cat somewhat out of the bag at the GQ Men of the Year awards on November 16, when he announced to The Mirror “I shouldn’t say this but I shot a scene, somehow, with the first ever Doctor, William Hartnell.”
Doctor Who fans put two and two together, correctly guessing that Gatwa didn’t mean the actual William Hartnell, who passed away in 1975, but the version of him played by actor David Bradley – first in 2013 docudrama An Adventure in Space and Time about the creation of Doctor Who, and subsequently in “The Doctor Falls”, “Twice Upon a Time” and “The Power of the Doctor”.
Knowing that An Adventure in Space and Time had yet to appear as part of BBC iPlayer’s extensive Whoniverse, and was scheduled for a BBC Four repeat on the night of the 60th anniversary,...

The first season of the “spectacularly dark” thriller series The Devil’s Hour (watch it Here) launched exclusively on Amazon’s Prime Video on October 28th – and the show has been so successful during its first month of release, Amazon has announced that they’ve ordered two more seasons! The Devil’s Hour season 2 will begin filming sometime in early 2023.
Amazon’s Dan Grabiner had this to say about the renewal: “We’re thrilled with the audience response to The Devil’s Hour, and can’t wait to share the next chapter of this mind-bending story. Fans can look forward to plenty more twists and turns in this remarkable tale from first-time series creator Tom Moran, and welcoming back our immensely talented cast, led by Jessica Raine and Peter Capaldi.“
Series creator Tom Moran added: “Telling a story on television is a precarious business. Season 1 of The Devil’s Hour was just the beginning...

Classic Doctor Who suffered from the BBC’s shortsightedness when it came to archiving material, with many of the episodes from the William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton era destroyed. While a number of them have since been recovered, or restored as animated or audio versions, live action recreations have typically been impractical. One standalone episode, 1965’s Mission to the Unknown, has now been remade as a fan project though, something we delved into last week. The BBC were supportive enough to run it on their YouTube channel as well, 54 years to the date since its original broadcast, and you can check it out down below.
The recreation was made by academics and students at the University of Central Lancashire in the UK. Mission to the Unknown is notable for acting as a prequel to the epic 12-part serial The Daleks’ Master Plan, and for not featuring the Doctor or any of the series’ regular cast.

Doctor Who Christmas specials are always a treat for the fans, but the episode due to air in just under two weeks now is a real must-see. Not only will it feature Peter Capaldi’s last hurrah as the Twelfth Doctor, with Jodie Whittaker making her debut as No. 13 by the end of the episode, but it will also see the return of the First Doctor. That’s three Doctors for the price of one!
Taking over the part of the original Time Lord is David Bradley (Game of Thrones, Harry Potter), who already has some experience with the role as he previously played First Doctor actor William Hartnell in the 2013 biopic An Adventure in Space and Time. His impersonation of Hartnell impressed fans so much, in fact, that he was a natural choice to play the Doctor for real in the special. However, it’s not something that he ever expected.

The jaws of Doctor Who fans worldwide hit the floor when David Bradley appeared as the First Doctor in the closing moments of the season 10 finale. After giving an uncanny performance as original actor William Hartnell in the 50th anniversary biopic An Adventure in Space and Time, Whovians were delighted that the former Harry Potter star would be pairing up with Peter Capaldi this Christmas.
If Bradley had his way, though, he would have many more appearances as the First Doctor lined up. When asked if he’d like to return to Doctor Who at a panel during this weekend’s McM London Comic-Con, Bradley was more than enthusiastic about the idea.
“If they asked me, yes, I’d bite their hand off. I think it would be fun. So far, I’m very happy to have been involved in both [Doctor Who and An Adventure in Space of Time]. It’s quite something, you never expect in your...

There’ve been a broad range of reactions to the casting of Jodie Whittaker as the new Doctor, the first woman to play the part in Doctor Who‘s half-century on TV. While there are definitely a number of extreme opinions floating around, Steven Moffat has claimed that most fans love the decision. Even if that’s not entirely true, it would seem that many of the stars of the show are on board with having a female Doctor.
After all, ever since the announcement that Whittaker would be portraying the character, a number of people involved with the sci-fi series, both past and present, have congratulated the actress – including Peter Capaldi, Colin Baker, Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant, among others. Now, you can add one more to the list, as David Bradley has spoken up as well, showering nothing but praise on Whittaker in the process.

Say what you want about Steven Moffat – and there are certainly a lot of opinions out there on him – but he’s done a damn fine job with Doctor Who during his time as showrunner.
Known for storylines that were always a bit too complex but enough beautifully written monologues and truly inspired episodes that more than made up for that, Moffat’s definitely had his fare share of critics over the years. On the whole, though, he’s done some excellent work on Doctor Who and has been instrumental in bringing it the level of worldwide recognition it now has, shepherding the show through arguably its most globally popular period and ensuring that the modern series will continue on in rude health after he steps down.

The internet is still reeling from the shocking news that Jodie Whittaker has been cast in Doctor Who. As the first female to ever play the iconic role of the Doctor, everyone seems to have their own opinion on it, with a vocal minority of the fanbase outraged at the decision but the general consensus still being that it’s a step in the right direction for the show. However you feel about having a woman portray the Doctor, there’s no denying that Whittaker’s a talented individual. Just watch Broadchurch for proof of that.
That’s not to say that some of the other names rumored to be in the running for the part wouldn’t have been exciting choices as well though. For instance, many were hoping to see Tilda Swinton nab the role, or even David Harewood. And then, of course, there’s Sacha Dhawan. The...

The jaws of thousands of Doctor Who fans hit the floor on Saturday night when, at the end of the already explosive season finale, the dying Twelfth Doctor encountered his past self – the original, you might say – the First Doctor. Following that shocking reveal, the BBC have now released two new promo images which confirm that David Bradley will be joining Peter Capaldi for the upcoming Christmas special.
This is Bradley’s second time stepping into original actor William Hartnell’s shoes. Bradley – most famous for playing Hogwarts caretaker Argus Filch in the Harry Potter movies – previously portrayed Hartnell in An Adventure in Space and Time, a biopic based on Doctor Who‘s creation released back in 2013. The regeneration has begun! Or at least something has begun, making the wait for the annual Doctor Who Christmas special all the more difficult. Tonight's finale not only gave Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie) a possible ending, but it set up one hell of a team up in the Christmas special, thanks to the surprise appearance of David Bradley as the first Doctor. (The first doctor was originally played by William Hartnell, but Bradley played Hartnell in the TV movie An Adventure in Space and Time.) For one of his last adventures, Peter Capaldi's Doctor battled the Cybermen on a 400 mile long ship and won, obviously, though not without sort of dying first, after a bit of a showdown with the Masters....

The world of Doctor Who has changed greatly in the space of just 10 years. The cast and crew have almost completely been replaced since 2005, including a number of new actors to play the errant Time Lord and his companions.
But what has happened to the class of '05? Where are Rose and Mickey now? What is the writer of 'Dalek' up to? And where can you see more work from the director of 'Rose'?
Here it is then, your guide to the main players of Doctor Who series one.
The Cast
After his three-month on-screen stint as the Doctor, Christopher Eccleston's career continued in much the same vein, taking in theatre, interesting television roles and the odd blockbuster.
Post-2005, the Northern actor went Stateside to take on the role of invisible man Claude in the Us series Heroes. From there, he popped up in a very amusing Doctor Who-esque cameo as Dr.
But what has happened to the class of '05? Where are Rose and Mickey now? What is the writer of 'Dalek' up to? And where can you see more work from the director of 'Rose'?
Here it is then, your guide to the main players of Doctor Who series one.

This is no stuffy costume drama but a richly lived-in visit to early-19th-century England that is rough, bawdy, often funny, and more often unsettling. I’m “biast” (pro): I always expect greatness from Mike Leigh
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
I don’t know much about the painter J.M.W. Turner except that he was a precursor to the Impressionists, that his work, which we can see today was an early transitional sort of abstract, inspired future generations of artists to represent the world in ways that had never been imagined before.
Even this foundational basic is not the sort of thing that Mr. Turner cares to share with us. As grand as it is — the film frequently borrows the epic look and feel of Turner’s sweeping landscapes — history and scholarship are not its concerns. This...

We chat to Doctor Who and Sherlock writer and actor Mark Gatiss about his series 8 episode Robot Of Sherwood, 'darkness', and more.
Warning: contains a spoiler for An Adventure In Space And Time.
Mark Gatiss is a busy man but polite to a fault. He agreed to squeeze in a chat with us after a lengthy round of Us phone interviews on the eve of broadcast for his seventh Doctor Who episode, Robot Of Sherwood ("It'll just be nice to talk to someone who doesn't say Rah-ban Hud!"). Half an hour before the scheduled time, he calls to say that he's finished with the Americans but would I mind waiting twenty minutes while he has his tea? Take as long as you like, I say, thinking a) how rare it is for 'the talent' not to communicate their running-late apologies through a PR, b) for 'the talent' to apologise for running late at all,...

Well I think everyone can agree that we certainly needed that. After one episode of him possibly getting a bit murder-y and another of his hatred being enough to turn a Dalek into Space Judas, Robot Of Sherwood finally gives the Twelfth Doctor some levity. And Peter Capaldi the chance to show off his comedy chops without turning the air blue.
Mark Gatiss pulls off a hat trick of strong scripts after last year’s The Crimson Horror and the 50th Anniversary biopic An Adventure In Space And Time with an episode that does what Doctor Who often avoids for fear of failing: an episode deliberately weighted towards comedy. And this time it succeeds on pretty much every level. It also really invokes the feeling of Classic Who with references to old episodes flung about as often as arrows, a visual homage to State Of Decay (1980) at the climax,...

Who is Sacha Dhawan?
Ever since his star-making role as Doctor Who's first director Waris Hussein in Mark Gatiss' brilliant drama An Adventure in Space and Time, this up-and-comer has seemingly not left our television screens.
From parts in cult series In The Flesh and Utopia to a guest stint on flashy Us drama 24, not to mention his latest gig on BBC One's In The Club, Dhawan has had quite the year.
Digital Spy spoke to Sacha about his career thus far and the range of different characters he's brought to life in some of UK television's best dramatic series.

Made in Chelsea NYC audience figures dropped by approximately 350k, as regular viewers enjoyed the Bank Holiday weekend.
After recording a series high of 720k for last week's show, yesterday's (August 24) instalment was viewed by just 372k (1.9%) at 9pm and 102k (0.7%) on E4+1.
BBC One's Countryfile once again scored the biggest ratings of Sunday evening, attracting a reduced audience of 4.71 million (23.7%) at 8pm.
It was sandwiched between Nature's Miracle Orphans and The Village, which were watched by 3.73 million (21.9%) and 3.52 million (17.6%), respectively.
With highlights of the games between Tottenham Hotspur and Qpr, as well as Manchester United vs Sunderland, Match of the Day 2 bucked the downward trend, and was actually seen by an increased audience of 2.56 million (20.4%).
Celebrity Big Brother was another show that seemed to be unaffected by the Bank Holiday, entertaining 1.7 million (8.6%) at 9pm. Channel 5 movie Legally Blonde was viewed by 995k (5.4%) at 7pm.

As Peter Capaldi’s first series of Doctor Who approaches, we look back over the months leading up to him being cast as the next Doctor…
Hindsight is fun. While it’s hard to spot patterns, coincidences or ironies while events are happening, hindsight (plus internet search engines) can reveal all of the above.
As series eight of Doctor Who approaches then, we thought it might be fun to dig back through the show’s official press bumf to see what was happening behind the scenes in the run-up to Peter Capaldi being announced as the next Doctor. When did the search for Matt Smith’s successor start in earnest? Who first suggested Peter Capaldi? Who knew he’d won the role, and when? What did he get up to in the months he knew, but couldn’t tell? And who had to tell a few porkies in order to keep the secret safe?...

The first major awards ceremony honoring this past year’s accomplishments on the small screen took place last night as Cedric the Entertainer hosted the 2014 Critics’ Choice Television Awards from the Beverly Hilton. I’ve always preferred the Critics’ Choice Awards to the Emmys, just because my views tend to line up more with the members of the Broadcast Television Journalists Association. This year was no different, as a number of highly deserving actors, actresses and shows were honored.
Allison Janney was the clear winner last night, taking home two Critics’ Choice TV Awards. The actress won Best Guest Performer in a Drama Series for her devastating work on Showtime’s Masters of Sex and also tied with Orange is the New Black actress Kate Mulgrew for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her performance as the title character on CBS’s Mom.

Some of the biggest shows on television went head to head. Here's who came out on top.
All the hottest names in TV turned out for the 2014 Critics Choice Television Awards on June 19, held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Cedric the Entertainer hosted the gala event presented by the Broadcast Television Journalists Association, and the night was really a battle between two cable channels.
Premiere pay-cable network HBO had a whopping 18 nominations, but in a show of strength for a smaller cable channel, FX topped that with 19. Meanwhile, the big contenders for individual shows were the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory, the CBS drama The Good Wife, FX's crime dramedy Fargo, Showtime's drama series Masters Of Sex and HBO's The Normal Heart, all getting five noms each.
Also, Netflix struck a blow against the traditional television hierarchy with their original series Orange Is The New Black competing in several key categories.

Alex's series looking back at the film careers of actors who've played the Doctor finishes with Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi...
Feature
Read the previous part in this series: the film careers of Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant, here.
By 2009, the new version of Doctor Who had become not only an integral part of Saturday night television and a huge Christmas ratings winner but also an international success all over again. David Tennant, who had played the Time Lord since 2005 and was, arguably, more popular than any Doctor since the mighty Tom Baker hung up his scarf in 1981, had announced his resignation from the part he loved in October 2008. Many wondered how the incoming showrunner, Steven Moffat, would follow Tennant and what kind of show would emerge.
Tennant spent much of 2009 on stage in Hamlet and was only able to devote small amounts of time to Doctor Who. Occasional specials...

Peter Davison's joyous Doctor Who special, The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot, is to get a disc release...
News
The 50th anniversary weekend of Doctor Who last November didn't really put a foot wrong. Mark Gatiss' drama An Adventure In Space And Time was a treat. The Day Of The Doctor, starring Matt Smith and David Tennant, was a smash hit. And then there was Peter Davison's quite wonderful The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot. Available via interactive services, word of it quickly spread, and as a consequence, lots of people got to enjoy the story of Davison, Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy trying to gatecrash Doctor Who's 50th special.
Now it seems as though The Five-Ish Doctors is coming to DVD as well. Colin Baker dropped the news at a convention over the weekend, revealing that it would be part of an as-far unannounced Matt Smith set that BBC Worldwide is planning.
