Netflix continues to dominate the streaming sphere, and frankly it's not hard to see why. The streamer pumps out so much so-called "content" that I'm starting to wonder whether half of this stuff isn't already being generated by some god awful AI. Still, amid the onslaught of media, Netflix put out some pretty good films in 2024, most notably the killer action thriller "Rebel Ridge," which surely went a long way to helping star Aaron Pierre land the role of John Stewart in DC and James Gunn's burgeoning shared universe.

Netflix started 2025 strong, too, proving that streaming audiences still know a good film when they see one by delivering Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar" to its servers and seeing it shoot to the top of the charts. No doubt the rest of the year will see more of the same quality filmmaking punctuating a sea of otherwise forgettable streaming slush. But...

After The Watchers' recent release on Netflix, new viewers are wondering what the Watcher creatures truly are.

Based on A. M. Shine's 2021 novel, The Watchers' story follows Mina, a 28-year-old artist, who becomes trapped in a vast Irish forest alongside three strangers, all stalked by mysterious creatures at night.

The film was released in theaters on June 7, 2024, by Warner Bros. Pictures. Despite its intriguing premise, The Watchers received overall negative reviews from critics and earned $33.2 million at the global box office, falling short of commercial expectations.

While the strike-impacted 2024 release slate resulted in fewer movies overall, 2025 promises to be something of a return to normal with a bevy of highly anticipated films coming to both theaters and streaming. From two new Marvel movies to James Gunn’s DC reboot of “Superman” to a “Jurassic” reboot to live-action remakes of animated classics galore, there’s plenty of familiar territory, but also noteworthy original films as well – Ryan Coogler’s vampire film “Sinners,” Steven Soderbergh’s ghost story “Presence” and a new Paul Thomas Anderson movie are all on tap, to name a few.

And that’s not to mention the films that don’t have release dates yet but are promised for 2025 – Netflix alone has the third “Knives Out” movie “Wake Up, Dead Man,” Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein” and a new Noah Baumbach film.

Oh yeah, and there’s a new “Avatar” sequel coming in December.

To kick off 2025, Netflix has added a new slate of films to its streaming library, highlighted by Dune: Part Two. Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi blockbuster, which Consequence named the fourth best film of 2024, is streaming on the service as of January 1st.

Dune: Part Two, which stars Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, and more, remains available to stream on Max. The first Dune movie can also be streamed on both Netflix and Max. Additionally, both films are available to purchase together in 4K Uhd.

Other new titles available to stream on Netflix as of January 1st include Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire; Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga; Horizon: An American Saga: Chapter 1; The Watchers; Inception; Meet the Parents and its sequels Meet the Fockers and Little Fockers; Apollo 13; Love Actually; Schindler’s List; the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man trilogy; Rush Hour franchise; and Bruce Almighty.

You are officially out of excuses to not see what Severance, Slow Horses, Shrinking or Silo — or any of Apple TV+’s shows that don’t start with the letter “S” — are all about.

The premium streamer has announced that anyone and everyone will be able to stream its original TV series and what not for free this weekend, Friday, Jan. 3 through Sunday, Jan. 5. (An Apple TV+ subscription usually fetches $9.99 month.)

Hugh Grant led psychological horror thriller, Heretic, has hit the theatres in the United States this Friday. The audience has been kind to the horror thrillers this year as films, like Speak No Evil, Smile 2, and Terrifier 3, have performed outstandingly at the box office. Caddo Lake writer-directors Celine Held and Logan George are still pinching themselves over M. Night Shyamalan’s faith in their mind-bending second feature.

Years ago, when Shyamalan was actively recruiting cinematographers for the third season of his Apple TV+ series Servant, he took a look at Held and George’s acclaimed short film called Caroline, but instead of just hiring their Dp Lowell A. Meyer, he insisted on employing the entire team. When the married directing duo arrived at Shyamalan’s office to get the lay of the land and watch an early cut of Servant’s season three premiere, the NYU alums were both caught off guard when the Unbreakable filmmaker inquired about their second feature script that was then known as Vanishings.

It's been a busy year for M. Night Shyamalan. This summer, he dropped the wildly entertaining (and wildly silly) concert-set serial killer thriller "Trap," starring Josh Hartnett and Shyamalan's daughter, Saleka. The "Sixth Sense" director has several other projects in the works, but he's also been branching out as a producer, producing Ishana Shyamalan's "The Watchers" earlier this year and "Caddo Lake," co-directed by Logan George and Celine Held, this month. It's the latter film that's been climbing the streaming charts this week, with the latest viewership data from FlixPatrol listing it as the most-watched movie on HBO, home to the streaming site Max.

M. Night Shyamalan certainly has been busy this year pushing out his signature brand of twisty thrillers. So far in 2024 we have had his daughter’s directorial effort, The Watchers, which he produced; the intriguing modest hit Trap, which stars another daughter and which he directed and produced; and now Caddo Lake, which is being heavily advertised as from “Producer M. Night Shyamalan.” Set for a streaming debut on Max starting Thursday rather than going theatrical like the rest of his feature output, the pic unmistakably fits right into his own filmography, even if he turned over writing and directing reins to the team of Celine Held and Logan George.

Actually this one went into production exactly three years ago under the title The Vanishing at Caddo Lake — while Shyamalan still was working his now-wrapped Apple TV+ series Servant, which happens to be a key credit for his filmmakers here...

2024 isn't even over yet, and we've already been hearing about a lot of new horror content set to be released in 2025. For example, Paramount Pictures will release its new horror film Vicious early next year, and you won't believe who's in the cast.

We first learned of this horror flick back in February 2024. At the time, it was reported that Paramount Pictures had boarded a new horror film titled Vicious and that Emmy nominee Dakota Fanning would be leading the cast. Bryan Bertino was also announced to be helming the film. Atlas Entertainment and Richard Suckle were signed on to produce with Melinda Whitaker as executive producer. The movie was also given a Aug. 8, 2025 theatrical release.

However, so much new information has come out about this film since then. For one, it will no longer be released in theaters in August 2025. Instead, its theatrical release has been pushed up to Feb.

The excitement around Terrifier 3, written and directed by Damien Leone, and starring David Howard Thornton and Lauren Lavera, has horror fans talking. Reports from early screenings claim the opening scene was so disturbing that viewers walked out and some even became ill. However, many believe this could be a marketing strategy to build hype, especially after recent horror films have failed to meet expectations.

While the movie promises intense scares, fans are left wondering if it will live up to the claims or be another case of promotion over substance.

Can Terrifier 3 Live Up to Its Hype or Is It Just Another PR Stunt?

Terrifier 3 is stirring up the headlines with its intense opening sequence, resulting in audience walkouts and even an incident of vomiting during the first UK screening of the movie.

Dakota Fanning recently spoke to The Cut about the awkward and oftentimes inappropriate interviews she was put into as a child star. The actor started her professional career at 6 years old and emerged as one of the Hollywood’s biggest child stars with performances in “Man on Fire,” “I Am Sam,” “War of the Worlds” and more.

“In interviews at a young age, I remember journalists asking me, ‘How are you avoiding becoming a tabloid girl?’ People would ask super-inappropriate questions,” Fanning said “I was in an interview as a child and somebody asked, ‘How could you possibly have any friends?’ It’s like, huh?”

Paramount Pictures has done quite well with Hasbro’s flagship Transformers toy line, to the tune of $5.3 billion worldwide, mostly thanks to the five movies directed by Michael Bay. Now, they’re returning to the animated realm that kicked the whole thing off in the ’80s with “Transformers One,” a prequel movie that explores the origins of the Autobots and Decepticons with Oscar-winning filmmaker Josh Cooley (“Toy Story 4”).

For this one, the filmmakers have put together a really impressive voice cast, including Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry, Scarlett Johansson, Jon Hamm, Keegan-Michael Key and Laurence Fishburne. A remake of the Danish horror movie, Blumhouse and Universal released Speak No Evil in theaters over the weekend, and the news is good on both the critical and box office fronts.

Arriving in theaters with an 83% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, Speak No Evil debuted with $11.3 million in 3,375 theaters at the domestic box office over the weekend.

Worldwide, the film’s current total is $20,873,595.

The reported production budget for Blumhouse’s Speak No Evil is $15 million, so the film should have no problem turning a profit at the box office in the coming weeks.

For the sake of context, Speak No Evil‘s $11.3 million domestic debut is higher than the opening weekends for several of this year’s horror movies, including Abigail, Imaginary, The First Omen, Blink Twice, The Watchers, Tarot, AfrAId, and Lisa Frankenstein. It opened to nearly the same amount as Blumhouse’s Night Swim ($11.7m), which ended with $54 million.

Sometimes a movie can be a best horror movie you never saw candidate but there are other instances where a movie has been seen and talked about but altogether lost to time. Richard Stanley has had a long career in terms of time he has been active but a very small amount of output in terms of actual number of projects. Yes, you read that right. On Friday, Aug. 30, 2024, you'll be able to watch this 1 hour and 42-minute movie on the Max streaming service. In fact, it'll be streaming exclusively on this streamer. However, if you'd rather rent or purchase the film, you can still do so on digital platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Google Play, Vudu, or Apple TV.

The Watchers was written and helmed by Ishana Night Shyamalan, the daughter of well-known filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan. It's based on the 2021 book of the same name by A. M. Shine and follows a young woman who finds herself stranded in the woods after her car suddenly breaks down.

Embracing a fresh spin on the classic horror genre, Stay in the Light continues the heart-pounding saga of Mina’s fight against the Watchers.

The official synopsis previews, “After her terrifying experience at the hands of the Watchers, Mina has escaped to a cottage on the west coast of Ireland. She obsessively researches her former captors, desperate to find any way to prolong the safety of humankind.

“When Mina encounters a stranger near her home, she fears the worst – for she knows the figure is not what it seems. Soon, people she has encountered start to disappear.

Move over Passion of the Christ – there’s a new highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time now! Indeed, Deadpool & Wolverine, after only eleven days of release, has already overtaken the lifetime gross of Mel Gibson’s classic depiction of the crucifixion of Christ, with the Marvel three-quel only five million away from a $400 million domestic total. With a $97 million weekend, which only represents a 54% week-to-week decline, the film has already bested the lifetime totals of both Deadpool and Deadpool 2. The sky seems to be the limit for what will no doubt prove to be one of Marvel’s biggest movies ever – and proof positive that an R-rating is no detriment to the box office.

So far, the film’s international total is over $800 million, and it seems likely to pass the billion-dollar mark within a matter of days. That’s absolutely outstanding for an R-rated sequel.

A somewhat less ferocious than expected box office battle is being fought this weekend between Marvel’s juggernaut, Deadpool & Wolverine and M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap. While no one expected the PG-13 Josh Hartnett thriller to really pose any kind of threat to Marvel’s box office behemoth in its second weekend, the movie – which has been poorly reviewed (including by us) seems certain to open below industry expectations (but exactly according to ours). In fact, Deadline is forecasting that the film will be easily beaten by Twisters in its third weekend.

As per the early box office estimates, Deadpool & Wolverine is looking at a second weekend in the $94 million range (although it could rally and cross $100 million), while Twisters should make about $22 million, which is a terrific hold for this well-performing sequel to the 1996 classic. Trap looks to be a distant third with only about $15 million, although if word-of-mouth is really bad,...

Where are all my horror fans? Netflix recently added 10 horror films to its platform on the first of August. While I recommend checking out each new release, the one that should be at the top of your watchlist is the 2024 supernatural horror film Tarot. This movie is criminally underrated, in my opinion, when it really deserves all the love and attention.

Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg (The Expendables 4) wrote and directed Tarot, making it their feature film directorial debuts. Like most movies nowadays, Tarot is based on another piece of work. It's based on Nicholas Adams' 1992 novel Horrorscope. Although panned by critics, the horror flick still managed to be a box-office success, grossing $49 million worldwide against a budget of $8 million.
