“Once Upon a Time in Jerusalem”, the spin-off of Spaniards’ David Munoz and Adrian Cardona’s “Fist of Jesus” was presented as a teaser to buyers by Films Boutique in Cannes after it acquired it during its presentation at the Marche’s Fantasia-Frontieres Platform.
Well, it’s not really Christian, nor is it Jewish. Nor could it be called heathen as it tells the story of Jesus accidently causing a Zombie apocalypse after he fails to resurrect Lazarus from the dead which then forces Jesus and Judas to battle the undead with the help of 11 mercenaries…or perhaps his apostles or posse? Produced by Spain’s Ek Degol, Corte y Confeccion, France’s To Be Continued and Netherlands’ House of Nether Horror, this has got to be “one of the craziest and funniest projects we ever read,” says Films Boutique CEO Jean-Christophe Simon.

Baptiste Marceau, the oldest son of Marcel, has been closely involved in the research for this European coproduction that CAA is packaging and representing in Cannes. Recent years have seen a resurgance in the horror anthology, from the likes of V/H/S to The ABC’s of Death – both of which have inspired many a filmmaker to create their own anthology, to vary degrees of success. The latest to join the ranks is Zombieworld, a collection of 11 shorts, which was put together by Ruthless Pictures in association with horror website Dread Central. This film however has more in common with the “classic” 80s anthology film Groove Tube as TV newsreader Marvin Gloatt (played by the awesome Bill Oberst Jr.) – himself slowly turning into one of the undead...

The benefits and potential downfalls of film funds and the strength of genre films were among topics covered during Frontières panel at Bifff, hosted by Eave and moderated by Tailored Films’ Ruth Treacy.
House of Netherhorror’s Jan Doense noted that one of the benefits of film funds in the European market when it came to genre films was that as it was soft money, they generally give “more artistic freedom”.
“The system gives the opportunity for original ideas to get funded in an easier way than in North America where there isn’t the support of a film fund.”
However, Xyz Films’ Todd Brown countered that support from film funds does have a potential downfall. “It’s certainly the company line about giving creative freedom, but what I see in Canada all the time is that it creates a cycle of dependence. Producers developing projects according to the tastes of the funding body as opposed to the...

Joining the growing trend of Chinese companies seeking out a role in the movie business, Internet giant Youku is launching Heyi Film. A wholly owned film production subsidiary, it will make films “to the tastes of the Chinese audience” and “improve film marketing and distribution,” Tech in Asia reported. Heyi is eyeing major theatrical releases and helping online talent branch out. Among the first projects are Bad Sister, starring Ivy Chen; Vacation In Paris, starring Amber Kuo and Louis Koo; and The Master, a co-production with Beijing Century Partner Culture and Media. There’s also a plan to transfer popular web series Yes Boss! and Miss Puff, Tia says. Alibaba is the most recent Chinese company to add film production to its portfolio. However, a red flag was raised over its $804M acquisition of ChinaVision Media Group when the company said it had discovered suspicious accounting and suspended its shares...

Fantastic Fest top brass have announced their work-in-progress selections and film previews for the second edition of the international genre co-production market, Fantastic Market | Mercado Fantastico.

If you've never seen the short film Fist of Jesus, believe us when we say you'll be thanking god once you do. The people behind it are looking to take their stellar short into feature film territory and right now we have a new video for Once Upon a Time in Jerusalem to dig on.
What is Fist of Jesus, you ask? Simply put, it's an outrageously bloody comedy feature about a Jesus (and a Judas) who kick butt in a steampunk world full of zombies, mutants, and sinners. In short... it's the good stuff!
Adrián Cardona and David Muñoz write and direct.
For more information check out the official Once Upon a Time in Jerusalem IndieGOGO page.
Synopsis
After wiping out an entire village whilst trying to raise Lazarus, Jesus decides to go to the Oracle of Delphos for advice. The witches reveal to him that he must go on a perilous journey.

Jesus is coming and he's spreading carnage wherever he goes.Imagine, if you will, that a young Alex de la Iglesia were to remake Monty Python's The Life Of Brian. This is, in essence, what Spanish directors David Munoz and Adrian Cardona did with their short film Fist Of Jesus and if it sounds like one of the greatest things ever, that's because it is. Outrageously bloody - not to mention shockingly well made - the film racked up awards on the festival circuit while also pulling in well over a million views on YouTube, where it became a huge cult sensation. And now the duo are hitting the crowd funding trail to raise the money for the full feature version, Once Upon A Time In...

Following up on my previous article, “Watch 15 Great Horror Short Films,” which received a very positive response, I’ve researched and collected 13 more superb horror short films. As with the first article, I limited the choices to stand-alone live-action horror short films not produced for an anthology film and the selections were narrowed down by availability.
In further keeping with the criteria of the first article, animated horror short films and horror-comedy short films were excluded from consideration as both of these categories would make good subjects for their own individual articles. Sorry, Brutal Relax and Fist of Jesus fans.
It should also be noted that a number of highly regarded horror shorts readers might clamor to see in an article like this such as Ryan Haysom’s Yellow continue their long festival runs and have not been posted for online viewing and were therefore not considered for this piece.

Last month we took a trip to Nottingham, England's cinephile haven Broadway Cinema for four days of eclectic genre programming at the 2013 Mayhem Horror Film Festival. Check in right here for a look at some of the sights and reviews from the East Midlands' premier horror fest.
The festival kicked off on Thursday 31st October with a special screening of director Nicholas Roeg's Don't Look Now and Puffball, taking place in the special environs of St. Mary's Church with Roeg himself in attendance to introduce and officially open this year's event.
Topping off the evening was Vincenzo Natali's underwhelming Haunter (review here).
While we weren't around for that particular evening's events, the following three days saw a schedule packed to the gills with guests, impromptu trivia-based giveaways, and screenings unfolding before and behind the Broadway's gorgeous red curtains, including:
- The cinematically sumptuous, but disappointingly perplexing The Strange...

Dario Argento once said, "Horror is like a serpent; always shedding its skin, always changing. And it will always come back." Abertoir, Wales’ International Horror Festival that wrapped this past Sunday, November 10th, has been celebrating horror’s malleability and resilience for eight years.
This year you could find Argento’s operatic giallo style reinvented by French filmmakers Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani in The Strange Colour of Your Body’s Tears; vampires got a makeover in Kiss of the Damned and Chimeres; ghosts found new life in Ghost Graduation, Forgotten, and Soulmate; found footage was resurrected as Catholic horror in Borderlands; and creature features took a strange turn with The Station and Bad Milo.
Festival director Gaz Bailey had to watch a lot of awful films to find the best the genre had to offer. And he looks for one thing above all else when selecting a film: originality.

On Friday, October 25th, we took a trip to Sheffield, South Yorkshire, to enjoy three days of premier horror programming at the Celluloid Screams film festival. Take a look in here for some of the fear-filled sights and sounds to come from the Sheffield Showroom Workstation this year.
Nestled next to Sheffield Hallam University, the Showroom Workstation cinema offers a haven for local film buffs, students and artists, and also sports one of the most impressively relaxed café bars of any film screening establishment we've been to thus far. Real ale on tap – kudos! Upon walking through the doors and approaching the box office, your attention was immediately drawn to the selection of severed body parts and cobwebs hanging at head height. This also extended to the bar and concessions stand, lending a nice kooky, spooky feeling to the weekend's events.
Pass holders for the festival also received a complimentary goodie bag on arrival,...

The Messiah is coming and he brings a bloody fist with him. David Munoz and Adrian Cardona's short film Fist Of Jesus has proven to be something of a sensation online - where it's been viewed more than three million times - so it should come as no surprised that the duo's publicly wished-for feature length expansion is now also primed and ready to go ahead.Munoz and Cardona debuted a new clip and teaser for the feature project - titled Once Upon A Time In Jerusalem - at the just completed Sitges Film Festival and while we've not been cleared to share it (yet) we have seen it and it's pretty amazing. Imagine, if you will, the life of Christ fused with Mad Max, Six...

Mile High Horror Film Festival
Oct. 3-6, 2013
Littleton, Colorado
A lot of thought, hard work and dedication went into the Mile High Horror Film Festival this year. With over 60 quality feature films, shorts, and music videos from 13 different countries, the 4 day fest hosted by Alamo Draft House (allies to the independent film genre) had camp to vamp and everything in between.
The festival had a wealth of new and old industry blood, live performance artists (or free range zombies, whichever you prefer), and an intriguing assortment of vendors and artists. The enthusiastic attendees can never be accused of living in their parents basements, but one step better, underneath their parents basement…
Some real stand outs besides the critic and audience pick winners were: Fist of Jesus- A Mexican import exploring the theme that Lazarus was indeed the first zombie. Hell No- A hilarious take...
