Members of Led Zeppelin helped create Donovan’s “Hurdy Gurdy Man” in the studio. The tune paved the way for a lot of the band’s later work. Donovan himself argued that Jimmy Page’s contributions to “Hurdy Gurdy Man” changed rock music.
Why Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page worked on Donovan’s ‘Hurdy Gurdy Man’
Donovan is a singer known for two types of songs: folk tunes and psychedelic experiments. His folk tunes include “Catch the Wind,” “Colors,” and “There Is a Mountain,” while his psychedelic jams include “Sunshine Superman,” “Atlantis,” and “Mellow Yellow.” “Hurdy Gurdy Man,” an early heavy metal song, was an uncharacteristic release for him. It sounds the way it does thanks to help from members of Led Zeppelin.
During a 2008 interview with Uncut, Donovan discussed the origin of “Hurdy Gurdy Man.” “Many people have said over the years how important that session of John Paul Jones,...

Donovan’s “Sunshine Superman” isn’t just a classic rock song — it’s a song with an incredible backstory. Donovan collided with The Beatles and Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin when he recorded the tune. Page went on to help Donovan record another one of his classics.
‘Sunshine Superman’ singer Donovan, The Beatles, and Led Zeppelin were at Abbey Road
During a 2016 interview with Billboard, Donovan discussed the recording of “Sunshine Superman.” “Mickie Most, my producer, asked, ‘What do you want on it.’ I said, ‘Harpsichord. I want jazz guitar.’ He said, ‘Ok, I’ll bring a great guitar player, a jazz band and classical instruments.’ John Cameron arranged it. We arrived at the session at Abbey Road, and next door was The Beatles.”
Subsequently, a future member of Led Zeppelin played on the track. “We started the session, and in walks Jimmy Page,” the Hurdy Gurdy Man said. “I couldn’t believe it.

The Beatles‘ The White Album is their most eclectic record. In spite of its mix of styles, one rock star said he influenced 75% of the album — and he has a quote from George Harrison to back that up. Notably, the star recalled helping John Lennon write an emotional ballad for the album.

Donovan is a singer known for folk tunes like “Catch the Wind,” “There Is a Mountain,” and “Colours,” as well as psychedelic tracks like “Sunshine Superman,” “Hurdy Gurdy Man,” and “Mellow Yellow.” He was there during The Beatles’ storied trip to India to learn about meditation from the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. During a 2013 interview with Performing Songwriter, he discussed how he influenced The Beatles at that time.
“John looked at me playing guitar one day and said, [imitating Lennon] ‘How do you do that?...

George Harrison was rarely a provocateur, however, he called his final album Brainwashed. Accusing anyone of being brainwashed is pretty bold! One of George’s British Invasion peers explained the origin of that memorable title. Notably, it had a connection to George’s spiritual views.
Donovan said George Harrison’s album ‘Brainwashed’ was a reaction to materialism
Two kindred spirits in the 1960s counterculture were George Harrison and Donovan. Both artists were folk-rockers who explored spirituality through their songs. George’s songs were often expressions of his Hindu faith, whereas Donovan sang about common New Age topics like Atlantis and witchcraft. Both of them were also environmentalists.
During a 2018 interview with Goldmine, the “Mellow Yellow” singer discussed his feelings about the planet and George’s — and what they both learned from the books they read. “That the older generation was destroying the ecosystem with no consideration whatsoever for the inner world of plants,...

The Beatles wrote many songs about themselves but they rarely wrote about other rock stars. One of the songs from The Beatles’ The White Album is reportedly a lighthearted spoof of one of the rockers the band knew personally. Despite this, Paul McCartney said the song had a very different meaning.
A song from The Beatles’ ‘White Album’ may be about a star who worships Mother Nature
Donovan is a folk-rock singer who explored hippie mysticism through songs like “Atlantis,” “Season of the Witch,” and “There Is a Mountain.” He famously accompanied The Beatles on their trip to Rishikesh, India, to study meditation under the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. According to a Variety article, The Beatles were gently poking fun at Donovan with “Mother Nature’s Son,” one of the folk tunes from The White Album.

A song from The Beatles‘ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is so old-fashioned it could have come out during the Victorian era. One of The Beatles’ rock ‘n’ roll peers said that he couldn’t have written the song because he had no sense of time. Regardless, that singer’s tunes have lasted over the course of generations.
Donovan on why Paul McCartney wrote a song from The Beatles’ ‘Sgt. Pepper’
One of The Beatles’ fellow British Invasion stars was Donovan. He contributed to psychedelia as much as they did with hits such as “Sunshine Superman,” “Atlantis, and “Hurdy Gurdy Man.” Donovan also accompanied the Fab Four on their fateful trip to India to meet the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and learn about Transcendental Meditation.
During a 2013 interview with BusinessLive, Donovan discussed his own sense of time. “One couldn’t remember last Tuesday or think about next Tuesday,” he said,...

The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were the two defining bands of the 1960s. Surely, any artist who split the difference between them would find an audience. A singer who saw himself as the middle ground between the two bands was big in the 1960s — but only in the 1960s.

The Beatles were the most popular and important act of the British Invasion, but no classic rock fan should ignore the achievements of Donovan. Notably, John Lennon was a big fan of one of Donovan’s songs, and he played it over and over. The “Hurdy Gurdy Man” singer revealed what he thought of John as a person. John felt that he and Donovan were on a similar wavelength.

The Beatles‘ “Something” is one of George Harrison’s masterpieces. He probably couldn’t have made it alone. Another 1960s rock star taught George a musical trick that helped him write “Something.” John Lennon would later say that “Something” differed from all of George’s previous compositions.

No Paul McCartney song was created in a vacuum. A 1960s classic rock star said Paul took ideas from him. The star’s producer told him not to let Paul hear one of his tracks. The tune in question became a massive hit in the United States and the United Kingdom, and it is recognizable to this day.
Paul McCartney and another rock star inspired each other’s songs
During a 2016 interview with The Guardian, Donovan discussed the place he was in life when he wrote his most famous hit, the psychedelic classic “Sunshine Superman.” “At the time, I was great pals with The Beatles,” he said. “We were all experimenting, nicking sounds from each other.
“I was getting into baroque music and told my producer, Mickie Most, I wanted harpsichord on the track,” Donovan recalled. “‘You need an arranger,’ he said, introducing me to John Cameron who understood immediately.

Donovan was there during The Beatles‘ trip to India. He and the Fab Four were having the sort of heady conversation people should have at a spiritual retreat. Donovan and the Fab Four had some very similar opinions.
Donovan and The Beatles discussed ‘the inner world’ in India
During a 2013 interview with Performing Songwriter, the “Sunshine Superman” singer explained how he became interested in meditation. “Reading Jack Kerouac and hearing the word ‘Zen’ and going on to Buddhism, then rediscovering the Eastern philosophies and the word’ meditation,’ I realized that there was an actual technique for finding the inner world that we’d lost in the West.”
The “Hurdy Gurdy Man” star felt that the world needed more spirituality. “The great teachers — Carl Jung, Sigmund Freud, Joseph Campbell — spoke of being able to enter the inner world, where all things come from and all things return,” he said. “Not a religion.

1705. England is a mess. Society is crooked. The rich stamp on the poor and nobody, from the gouty magistrates to Queen “Brandy Nan” Anne, is doing a damn thing about it. The people need a hero, and Happy Valley and Gentleman Jack’s Sally Wainwright has written them one in Nelly Jackson.
Played by Derry Girls’ Louisa Harland, Nell is a kickass 18th century action hero infused with supernatural strength by her spirit sidekick Billy Blind (a winged Nick Mohammed from Ted Lasso). Between those two, Nell’s younger sisters, a formerly enslaved servant, and a louche conman, they’re going to save the world. Or maybe just Tottenham.
Renegade Nell is an eight-part British historical adventure series. In a mirror universe, it might have aired in the Saturday teatime slot on BBC One in the Doctor Who, Robin Hood, Merlin and Atlantis vein, just made with more cash and more women,...

“Mellow Yellow” by Donovan is the most beloved 1960s song with the word “yellow” in the title that wasn’t released by The Beatles. During an interview, the “Atlantis” singer opined that his catalog was a lot more diverse than The Beatles’, to the point where he sounded like a completely different artist from song to song. Donovan also said something about his background made him similar to George Harrison, John Lennon, and Paul McCartney. While “Mellow Yellow” might be one of the most unusual hits of the period, it wouldn’t be the same without a little help from Paul.

It was just last week we were celebrating the 20th anniversary of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which catapulted Michel Gondry into the Hollywood system with the likes of Be Kind Rewind and The Green Hornet. After the failure of that superhero tentpole, he retreated back to France, directing a handful of smaller-scale features, the latest of which, The Book of Solutions, gets meta following a filmmaker struggling with the editing of his big-budget project. Gondry is now mounting his return to Hollywood, the details of which have now been unveiled.

The best classic rock artists influence other classic rock artists. For example, The Beatles’ “I Am the Walrus” inspired one of Donovan’s songs. Donovan also revealed that a member of Led Zeppelin was a fan of his drumming.

If you thought the lyrics of The Beatles’ “I Am the Walrus” had odd lyrics, just listen to Donovan’s “Barabajagal.” It’s so nonsensical it uses fake words. The BBC reports the word “barabajagal” was derived from the line “Goo goo g’joob” from “I Am the Walrus.”

While no plot details have been unveiled, according to Deadline, Atlantis is “a coming-of-age musical, set in 1977 Virginia Beach, which draws inspiration from Williams’ childhood growing up in the city’s Atlantis Apartments.” In addition to Gondry signed on as director, screenwriters on board are Toy Story 4’s Martin Hynes and Tick, Tick…Boom’s Steven Levenson.
Atlantis was revealed back in 2017. While Hynes was attached even as far back as then, originally Michael Mayer – who won the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical for Spring Awakening – was set to direct.

Welcome back to Dead Time. I hope you left a light on for me because this month, we’re on the hunt for the Michigan Dogman and other cryptids that might be lurking in the darkness. I talked to Shetan Noir, a cryptozoologist, Michigan based author, journalist, and paranormal researcher about her career, as well as her personal experience with cryptid sightings.
Shetan is the Lead Investigator for the Michigan chapter of the North American Dogman Project and she runs the paranormal investigation team for the Michigan Center for Unexplained Events and Phenomenon. Her fascination began with lake monsters at an early age when she first learned about the Loch Ness monster, then heard reports of lake monsters in her own state of Michigan. Her research has since grown to include Michigan’s own Dogman and Nain Rouge, Bigfoot and ghost hunting. Her books include The Hounds Tooth Cookbook, Bone Arfp’etit!

Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack's 1933 mega-hit "King Kong" was a marvel of special effects. It employed stop-motion animation, outsize models, rear-projection, and novel composting methods to convince audiences that a giant ape was interacting with human co-stars. Compared to modern, ultra-slick CGI effects, the 1933 King Kong may not look as realistic, but the ape shimmers with life and personality beyond what many modern effects can accomplish. Kong is the most sympathetic character in the movie, as he was kidnapped from his home and exploited by would-be entertainment moguls. Using bi-planes to shoot Kong off the top of the Empire State Building wasn't a moment of triumph for a masterful humanity, but the tragic execution of an animal that doesn't understand what it was thrust into. Not bad for a film that's going to celebrate its 91st birthday in April of 2024.

Heads-up, landlubbers. This article contains major spoilers for "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom."
Let's talk about trash. No, that's not a reference to the pretty dismal reviews for the latest "Aquaman" sequel, which has ended the DC Extended Universe with more of a whimper than a bang. (Although /Film's review by Rafael Motamayor generally lands on the more positive end of the spectrum.) Rather, this is in reference to one major oversight from the 2018 movie that director James Wan has finally set right this time around. For all its fairly obvious missteps, "The Lost Kingdom" actually improves on its predecessor in one specific way that few DC films -- and superhero movies in general -- have ever even attempted. And it has to do with pesky humans making this world a worse and worse place to live by the minute.

Almost three years have passed since it was announced that Promising Young Woman and Saltburn writer/director Emerald Fennell had been hired to write the screenplay for a film based on the DC Comics character Zatanna. Set up at the Max streaming service, this movie would have been a collaboration between Warner Bros.’ DC Films and J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions… and of course, due to the changes at DC Films, Zatanna has since been scrapped. But during an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Fennell revealed that she did complete the script for the project, and described it as being “reasonably demented”.
As JoBlo’s Steve Seigh previously reported, “Zatanna, created by Gardner Fox and Murphy Anderson, is known throughout the Dcu as a powerful Homo Magi, meaning she’s a sub-race of naturally magic-wielding humans. As the daughter of magician Giovanni “John” Zatara and Sindella, Zatanna...

Peter Safran has reassured Jason Momoa he will "always have a home" with DC Studios. The company's co-head has seemingly confirmed speculation 'Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom' will be the 44-year-old actor's final appearance as the submerged superhero but insisted he and James Gunn won't be cutting ties with the star.Speaking at an event for the movie in Beverly Hills, Peter said: "[I hope fans] will really be here to support him in this journey. If it’s the end of the journey, fine."If it goes on, that’s also fine, but I think it has meant so much to him. "The way James [Wan, director] crafted this second film, it feels like a very complete story when you watch the two films together.“We’ll see what happens with him beyond it. I know that Jason will always have a home at DC, and at Warner Bros. In fact,...

Stars: Jason Momoa, Patrick Wilson, Amber Heard, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Randall Park, Dolph Lundgren, Temuera Morrison, Martin Short, Nicole Kidman | Written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick | Directed by James Wan
Directed by James Wan, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is both a direct sequel to 2018’s Aquaman (also directed by Wan) and also the fifteenth and final film in the Dceu (the DC Extended Universe). As such, it does the occasional bit of floundering, but it just about treads water, thanks to a mostly seaworthy plot and suitably salty character work.
The plot picks up a few years after the events of the first film, with Arthur Curry / Aquaman (Jason Momoa) now married to Mera (Amber Heard), raising a young son, Arthur Jr. and dividing his time between ruling as the King of Atlantis (complete with shiny orange armour), and fighting crime on the surface world. There’s a popular meme, spread across various social media platforms, where users upload a photo or video of themselves engaging in a series of increasingly ridiculous poses or actions. It’s accompanied by variations of the phrase “Never let them know your next move” — a cheeky imperative warning against predictability. Unlike participants in this trend, the team behind Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom isn’t afraid of doing what’s expected. They seem to prefer it.
James Wan’s sequel to his 2018 blockbuster Aquaman is frustratingly committed to formula. There are few surprises in this story of how Jason Momoa’s Arthur balances the responsibility of ruling his underwater kingdom with the challenges of parenthood. There are even fewer inspired moments in the screenplay, which moves between clunky exposition laying out more Atlantis lore and a string of punchlines in search of a joke. Right after the huge success of "Wonder Woman" but also the horrible, awful, franchise-ending "Justice League," the first "Aquaman" was a pleasant surprise. James Wan's second superhero movie ("Furious 7" features as many if not more acts of superheroism) felt like a fresh jolt of energy, featuring an octopus that plays drums, Julie Andrews as a monster, and the masterpiece that is Pitbull's cover of Toto's "Africa." This is a pure James Wan joint, one that features a terrifying horror scene with deep-sea monsters. And it was a bonafide hit, becoming the highest-grossing Dceu movie.
Before the Dceu officially ends with the release of "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom," /Film's own Jacob Hall talked to director James Wan about the making of the film, and why Wan was never interested in making a realistic take on the character. "I had to embrace the quirkiest side of this world,...

Fan favorite comics author Scott Snyder is jumping back into the horror field, this is time with a three-issue mini-series for upstart publisher Dstlry.
Titled White Boat, the comic will reteam the writer, who became a superstar thanks to his Batman work for in DC in the 2010s, with artist Francesco Francavilla. The two collaborated on a horror mini-series titled Night of the Ghoul, which is now set up for adaptation at 20th Century Studios with 21 Laps producing.
According to the publisher, the boats in White Boats are the mega-yachts that the super-rich use to traverse the globe. They are floating islands where your every desire can be fulfilled. Getting invited on board should be a dream come true…that is, until the crew traps and transports its guests to a remote island where secret cults have existed for millennia, working on something called “The Human Project.”

The common thread that unites all James Wan movies is sincerity. The director of modern horror classics like "Saw," "Insidious," and "The Conjuring," blockbuster behemoths like "Furious 7" and "Aquaman," and beloved cult items like "Dead Silence" and "Malignant" doesn't allow a single shred of snark or cynicism into his movies. Even his horror movies wear their hearts on their sleeves, which means this is doubly true for his bigger movies aimed at a massive worldwide audience. The first "Aquaman" made over a billion bucks by staying true to its goofball nature. In troubled times, it's clear audiences are buying Wan's particular brand of earnestness.
Wan's latest film, "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom," opens in theaters this week, and I had the opportunity to sit down with the filmmaker over Zoom to chat all about it. We talked about drumming octopuses and how the world of "Aquaman" carries the...

Deadline reports that Amazon is developing Halcyon, a sci-fi thriller based on Christopher Long’s graphic novel Hiding In Time. Halcyon comes from Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow, who will executive produce through his Metronome Film Company alongside Andrew Mittman’s 1.21 banner.
Halcyon is a “paranoid sci-fi thriller in which the Witness Protection Program relocates families to various eras in time. The series unravels a conspiracy that emerges when this seemingly infallible system is breached.” Sounds interesting. In addition to producing Halcyon, Colin Trevorrow will also direct the pilot of the series. Davey Holmes (Shameless) will serve as showrunner of the project, and will executive produce alongside Trevorrow, Mittman, and Lloyd Braun.

After helming Jurassic World, Colin Trevorrow stepped back for J.A. Bayona to take the reins of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, but he returned for Jurassic World: Dominion.

The idea of there being expansive “lore” for Adult Swim’s animated comedy Rick and Morty must seem so silly to people who don’t watch it. “Lore? You mean the goofy show about the drunk scientist and his grandson going on space adventures has a complicated canon?” Yes, believe it or not, we do mean exactly that!
While the show’s writers have historically been hesitant to fully embrace that lore in favor of self-contained episodic adventures, Rick and Morty does indeed have an overarching story featuring important backstory and a continuing plot. Through seven seasons, the series has included a handful of episodes that delve into Rick Sanchez’s origin story and his continuing mission for multiversal revenge. And according to us, those episodes are consistently among the series’ best.
Surely, creator Dan Harmon and company would prefer that you watch Rick and Morty as the complete, episodic experience it was intended as.

The Beatles‘ “Yellow Submarine” was unquestionably a highlight of Ringo Starr’s career but he said it wouldn’t have been as popular if its lyrics were slightly different. He thought fans would have been put off if the submarine was “deep purple.” Interestingly, The Beatles’ “Yellow Submarine” originally started with a 30-second intro that was very different from anything in the final version of the song. Ringo said the tune came from a period in the Fab Four’s career where they were heavily influenced by a very 1960s muse: drugs.

The Beatles‘ “Hey Jude” is one of the most famous songs of all time but, for the most part, it’s an island unto itself. Donovan’s “Atlantis” was one of the only hits to take cues from “Hey Jude.” Donovan also discussed how he drew inspiration from a supernatural book to write “Atlantis.”
The refrain of The Beatles’ ‘Hey Jude’ inspired a similar part of Donovan’s ‘Atlantis’
According to the Encyclopedia of Classic Rock, Donovan had a string of big hits in the 1960s. This run began with 1965’s “Catch the Wind,” a melancholy folk-rock number in the Bob Dylan vein, and ended with 1968’s “Atlantis,” a psychedelic song that begins with a spoken word section. If any 1960s solo artist had a musical range, it was Donovan.

Some opinions just don’t age well. A member of a pioneering 1960s band said The Beatles‘ “Hey Jude” didn’t live up to the Fab Four’s early songs. One of his bandmates told him he was wrong. That bandmate went on to become a star in his own right.

Just over three months before its Dec. 20 theatrical release, “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” has its first trailer.
The underwater actioner features Jason Momoa’s Aquaman reluctantly teaming with his previously deposed brother (Patrick Wilson) to deal with the return of Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s Black Manta. Contrary to what the internet has been spouting for three years, Amber Heard is indeed back as Mera.
As with the previous CinemaCon sizzle reel, we see at least one shot of Mera in action. The trailer promises a jaw-droppingly gorgeous fantasy spectacle, with crisp, clear and colorful underwater photography.
