In “Back to Black,” Jack O’Connell’s Blake Fielder-Civil comes into the life of Amy Winehouse — played by an exceptional Marisa Abela — with seductive bravado, sweeping the singer off her feet on their first meeting in a London pub thanks to, among other things, a lip-synced rendition of the Shangri-La’s “Leader of the Pack”.
As the divisive biopic, directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and released in the U.K. by StudioCanal this Friday (and in the U.S. by Focus Features on May 17), agonizingly portrays, the smitten pair quickly descend into violent self-destruction — a “toxic co-dependency” as Fielder-Civil later describes it in the film — fueled by alcoholism and drug abuse.
Many may question the ethics of picking at a tragic story that was heavily chronicled and sensationalized by the media in real-time during Winehouse’s final years. But for anyone who’s been tracking O’Connell’s career, the opportunity to...

Emma Thompson holds a distinct Oscars record. She is the only person in the history of the Academy Awards to win for both acting and writing. She took home the Best Actress trophy in 1993 for “Howard’s End.” Three years later, she collected an Oscar bookend with her Best Adapted Screenplay win for bringing Jane Austen‘s 1811 novel “Sense and Sensibility” to the screen.
Prior to Thompson’s double wins, several others contended for both acting and writing. Orson Welles won Best Original Screenplay in 1942 with Herman J. Mankiewicz for “Citizen Kane.” He also picked up a Best Actor nomination for the same film. Warren Beatty has a rich history in both acting and writing awards. He was nominated for Best Actor in 1968 for “Bonnie & Clyde,” in 1979 for “Heaven Can Wait, in 1982 for “Reds,” and in 1992″ for “Bugsy.” He picked up Original Screenplay bids in 1976 for “Shampoo” (shared with...

Sadao Nakajima passed away from pneumonia on 11th June, 2023. He was 88 years old. Active as a director until just four years before his passing, Nakajima left behind legacy of work that most directors would dream of. Alongside Kinji Fukasaku and Junya Sato, he is credited as being one of the main names to define the Yakuza genre, with some of his greatest works coming within that genre for Toei Studios, showcasing a range of styles and narrative complexities while at it. Outside of the yakuza genre as well though, Nakajima made a number of terrific features, mixing a range of genres and filmmaking styles effectively over an illustrious career that lasted a little under 60 years, starting from his debut in 1964 all the way until his swansong in 2019.
Without further ado, we list 12 essential films by Sadao Nakajima that are not in the Yakuza genre, in chronological order.

Warner Bros. today celebrates its centennial milestone as April 4, 2023, marks 100 years of its iconic contribution to film and television.
Its rich heritage stretches back to the four brothers, Harry, Albert, Sam, and Jack Warner, born to Polish-Jewish immigrants, who founded the studio in 1923 and became mavericks of the film industry. They not only created some of Hollywood’s greatest movies and film stars, but they also were pioneers behind the innovative technology of the Vitaphone that synchronized sound and put them in the forefront as major players in Hollywood.

A.O. Scott this week ends his 23-year run as film critic for the New York Times and most movie people are glad to see him go. So is he.
“If the film world is to become relevant again, it needs critics whose work reflects passion and advocacy, and that’s the opposite of Scott,” observes one important filmmaker who fears being quoted.
Besides, he notes, Scott didn’t leave the movies; the movies left Scott.

Quentin Tarantino has found the perfect goodbye to Hollywood.
The “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” auteur is rumored to be announcing his final film, titled “The Movie Critic,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. Tarantino is said to be directing the feature film in fall 2023, per THR sources, but is still shopping the script for a studio home.
IndieWire has reached out for comment.
While the logline is still under wraps, “The Movie Critic” is expected to be set in late 1970s Los Angeles with a female lead. THR reported that Tarantino may have used famed film critic Pauline Kael as inspiration for the film. Kael briefly worked as a consultant for Paramount in the late 1970s and closely collaborated with Warren Beatty — her support of “Bonnie & Clyde” when some older critics such as Bosley Crowther hated it helped kick off the whole idea of the New Hollywood.

Michael J. Pollard, whose long list of acting credits stretches back to the late 1950s but likely will is best remembered for his Oscar-nominated, star-making turn as the dimwitted but lovable sidekick C.W. Moss in 1967’s Bonnie and Clyde, has died. He was 80.
His death was announced on Facebook today by filmmaker Rob Zombie, who directed Pollard in 2003’s House of 1000 Corpses. A New York Times obituary cites Pollard’s friend Dawn Walker, who says the actor died Thursday of cardiac arrest at a Los Angeles hospital.
“Another member of our House of 1000 Corpses family has left us,” Zombie wrote. “The great Michael J Pollard has died. I have been a huge fan of Michael since I first saw him on the Star Trek “Miri”. He was amazing in everything from Bonnie and Clyde to Little Fauss and Big Halsy from Dirty Little Billy to The Four of the Apocalypse.

The ominous caverns that may be hidden below the fractured landscape of contemporary America are the violent playground for two Universal Pictures films, Us and Queen & Slim, that were represented on Saturday at Deadline’s The Contenders Los Angeles by two filmmakers who plugged into the nightmare side of the American Dream with fascinating results.
First to the stage was Melina Matsoukas, who made her directorial debut this year with the Universal/Makeready spree film Queen & Slim, which follows in tradition of Natural Born Killers, Bonnie & Clyde, Thelma & Louise and other outlaw-duo-on-the-run tales.
The film was written by Lena Waithe and it stars Daniel Kaluuya, Jodie Turner-Smith, Bokeem Woodbine, Chloë Sevigny, Flea, Sturgill Simpson, and Indya Moore. The story starts with Kaluuya and Turner-Smith as a couple on a first date. The flirty fun takes a dark twist, however, the a police traffic stop escalates into a physical...

Holly Hunter has joined the upcoming CBS Studios miniseries based on former FBI Director James Comey’s book “A Higher Loyalty,” Variety has learned.
Hunter will star as Acting Attorney General Sally Yates. She joins previously announced cast members Jeff Daniels (James Comey), Brendan Gleeson (President Donald Trump), Michael Kelly (Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe), and Jennifer Ehle (Patrice Comey).
Yates served as Deputy Attorney General under U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch until Lynch stepped down in January 2017 after Trump was sworn into office. The Trump administration asked Yates to serve as Acting Attorney General until a permanent replacement was confirmed by the Senate. Her tenure in that position lasted just 10 days, as she refused to enforce Trump’s controversial travel ban that focused on certain Muslim-majority countries and was subsequently dismissed by the President. Yates is also well-known for repeatedly warning the White House about National Security...

"Y'all really gave us something to believe in. We needed that, for real." Great films from the past continue to inspire new films every day. Check out this trailer mashup combining Arthur Penn's classic Bonnie & Clyde (1967) and Melina Matsoukas's Queen and Slim (2019) arriving in theaters this fall. It's obvious that Queen & Slim is an updated take on the original crime duo, with a screenplay by Lena Waithe; the marketing materials even reference the classic film. H Nelson Tracey (aka "Hint of Film") put together this video making them both feel as one. "Bonnie and Clyde remains a classic movie that catapulted Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway to legendary status. This fall, director Melina Matsoukas is releasing a Queen and Slim as a clear homage but with a modern approach, starring Daniel Kaluuya and newcomer Jodie Turner-Smith. Seeing the similarities, I decided to put them together in this trailer mashup.

Crime thriller “Queen & Slim” will have its world premiere on the opening night of AFI Fest 2019. The movie is the feature directorial debut of Melina Matsoukas, who graduated from the American Film Institute in 2005. Matsoukas has earned directorial acclaim over the years for her work on music videos like Rihanna’s “We Found Love” and Beyonce’s “Formation,” plus television episodes of “Insecure” and “Master of None.” “Queen & Slim” was written by Emmy winner Lena Waithe and stars newcomer Jodie Turner-Smith opposite Daniel Kaluuyra, a Best Actor Oscar nominee for Jordan Peele’s “Get Out.”
AFI Fest’s official synopsis for “Queen & Slim” reads: “While on a forgettable first date together in Ohio, a black man (Kaluuya) and a black woman (Turner-Smith) are pulled over for a minor traffic infraction. The protagonists of “Queen & Slim” are branded as the “black Bonnie & Clyde” after going on the run after killing a racist police officer in an act of self-defense. It’s a catchy name as seen in the new trailer for the film, which was released on Wednesday, but the movie’s director, Melina Matsoukas, doesn’t think that’s the best comparison.
In a special preview event to the press last week, Matsoukas said that black love stories are often compared to other white archetypes. But rather than turn stars Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith into anti-heroes as in “Bonnie & Clyde,” the story of “Queen & Slim” is meant to be universal with its themes of love, capital punishment, police brutality and the unity of the country.

South by Southwest is known for launching smart studio films and buzzy independent movies. It all happens against a backdrop of tacos, beer, and keynote speeches from influential artists and world leaders. In 2019, SXSW might have had one of its best years ever. As the film festival’s director Janet Pierson said practically before every screening, the quality of the movies that screened in Austin was just so strong.

Making a film about the ex-Texas Rangers who took down Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow on a Louisiana backroad feels so misguided given its inherently incongruent to the subversive nature of Arthur Penn’s seminal film about these outlaws. The groundbreaking “Bonnie and Clyde” was a molotov cocktail to the middle of the studio system in 1967, and its exploration of that blurry lines between sex and violence, the sexual self-denials that leads human beings to satisfy their urges elsewhere, was truly revolutionary and confrontational at the time.

There’s a scene in director John Lee Hancock’s film “The Highwaymen” which chronicles the astounding multi-city hunt for the infamous criminals Bonnie Parker (Emily Probst) and Clyde Barrow (Edward Bossert) by detectives Frank Hamer (Kevin Costner) and Maney Gault (Woody Harrelson), that perfectly defines the story. It’s when Frank and Maney, semi-retired rangers recruited back on the scene for the high-profile case, stop inside a quaint home where they think their targets might be only to find a quintessential pencil dress and blue suit worn throughout the Great Depression hanging in the closet. “They were playing house,” Frank says.
It’s an important line because, though Frank is referring to Bonnie and Clyde’s bizarrely romantic relationship, it highlights the fact that everything about the main characters in “The Highwaymen” hinges on identity and perception. Frank is a man of a certain age who’s gotten comfortable...

Check out The Highwaymen trailer, a new crime drama with Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson as the men who got Bonnie and Clyde.
When Bonnie & Clyde got big—the 1967 movie, not the 1930s outlaws—there was a taste for rebellion and defiance in pop culture. A forerunner of the decade’s other counterculture hits like The Graduate and Easy Rider, that film took the romanticized bandits of the Depression and further romanticized them for the decade of Vietnam and civil rights strife. Yet with all that romance, the fact they were actually murderers often gets lost in the narrative. John Lee Hancock’s The Highwaymen looks to fire back at that cinema mythology.
An apparent hard-hitting crime drama told from the perspective of the Texas Rangers who took Bonnie and Clyde out in a blaze of glory, The Highwaymen is one of the most intriguing high-profile efforts...

Fritz Lang’s third wartime anti-Nazi film is an Alfred Hitchcock-type spy chase taken from a psychological novel by Graham Greene, with the psychology angle transferred mostly to physical threats — ticking clocks, a mystery cake, and German bombs in the Blitz. Ray Milland is cool and collected for a man just released from a mental asylum, and proves up to the task of defeating a Nazi conspiracy.

Jeremy Jordan will round out the Broadway cast of this fall’s American Son, joining the previously announced stars Kerry Washington (Scandal) and Steven Pasquale (Rescue Me).
Jordan’s casting was announced today, and marks the actor’s return to Broadway since his stint on the CW series Supergirl. Jordan’s previous Broadway productions include Newsies and Bonnie & Clyde.
American Son, written by Christopher Demos-Brown and directed by Kenny Leon, will be Jordan’s first role in a non-musical Broadway production. He’ll play the character of Officer Paul Larkin.

Despite a career dating back to the earliest days of television, Estelle Parsons has never contended for an Emmy Award. At age 90, the Oscar-winning actress is about to break that dry spell as she is a frontrunner to win Best Comedy Guest Actress for her turn as Beverly Harris, the irresistibly insufferable mother of Roseanne Connor (Roseanne Barr) and Jackie Harris (Laurie Metcalf) on “Roseanne.”
She recurred in this role throughout the nine seasons of the show’s original run but was overlooked by TV academy voters. The ratings for the revival of “Roseanne” have been red-hot and Parsons was showcased in two of the best-reviewed episodes. In “Darlene v. David,” Beverly arrives at the Connors’ front door, admitting she has just been kicked out of her nursing home for having too many sexual flings with fellow residents. It is Parsons’ second appearance on the show, however, in “No Country for Old Women,...

“Doesn’t anyone even care about being free?” muses Carlitos (Lorenzo Ferro) disdainfully as he wanders louchely from room to garishly nouveau-riche room in the house he’s just broken into. The irony is that by the time the closing credits roll on Luis Ortega’s “The Angel,” Carlitos will be the definition of un-free, about to embark on the longest period of incarceration in Argentinian history.
The character is a self-servingly fictionalized version of real-life convicted murderer, rapist, kidnapper and thief Carlos Robledo Puch, who has been in prison for 46 years and who committed the majority of his violent crimes during a year-long spree at the tender age of 19. Ortega’s Carlitos is pitched younger still (he’s a high school student) and many of the grislier details have, rather dubiously, been jettisoned in this slick-surfaced, stylishly designed portrait of a serial killer. Hollywood glamour strikes the crime genre, with a bank robbery tale that concentrates on high living and high fashion. Superstars Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway play a coy game of thief and investigator. This expensive show is not really in fashion anymore, but in 1968 it was high-class filmmaking, with Norman Jewison solidifying his position as a smart maker of solid mainstream entertainment.

“The End of the F***cking World” is a near-perfect Netflix binge and, in all likelihood, an intolerable traditional television experience. Through three episodes, the adaptation of Charles Forsman’s comic book series comes across as a pointless odyssey copping themes and plot points from other, better stories: That “Bonnie & Clyde” is directly referenced does little to pique interest in the lead characters, James and Alyssa, as they embark on an unprompted road trip-turned-crime spree across England.
But then it clicks: A relatively late turn — over an hour into the two-and-a-half-hour series — provides a much-needed sense of purpose, and suddenly “The End of the F***ing World” becomes a darkly compelling journey of self-discovery and adolescent confusion. James develops into more than a disturbed wannabe serial killer; he’s a confused kid trying to cope with pain the only way he knows how. Alyssa isn’t an uncaring, self-destructive disruptor,...

Last year, Emile Hirsch and Holliday Grainger starred together in a TV mini-series retelling of the story of Bonnie and Clyde.
Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker were partners in crime as two of history’s most notorious bank robbers and killers, and you can see their story retold as the DVD release approaches. And if that puts you in the mood to explore criminal duos on-screen, here are ten of the best movie partners in crime.
10. Cobb and Arthur (Inception)
With all that’s going on, it’s easy to forget that Inception begins with a criminal partnership, but that’s what it is about. Cobb and Arthur work with a team, but the personnel around them changes according to the job at hand. What’s most interesting, though, about their partnership is what we don’t see, or know.
Whilst they work together, theirs does not seem to be an equal partnership.

Aided by Clyde’s sixth sense, they stayed one step ahead of the law until their final, fateful showdown. Also starring Academy Award® winners Holly Hunter (Best Actress, 1993, The Piano) and William Hurt (Best Actor, 1985, Kiss of the Spider Woman), Bonnie And Clyde is powerful, gripping entertainment.

"Bonnie and Clyde" ambushed Emmy voters on Friday night to discuss the ambitious miniseries that aired last December simultaneously on Lifetime, History and A&E.
